Why not just Computers as a Service?
Does ddrescue ever stop on its own?
@CanadianLuke yep (unless you tell it explicitly to run forever)
Hmm... Think I could have a usable partition if I stop it now? It has 75M of errors that it's trying to "divide"
it depends on where that 75M's worth of errors are...
@MichaelFrank That would just be IaaS. But what about the applications you're building on it?
PaaS and SaaS are designed to take the guesswork out of developing and deploying new applications.

Erm. Since when are birthdays posted on the front page of SU?

I know the start of the partition is OK, at least the front 10% had no errors
@nhinkle Always!
BIRTHDAY PARTAAAAAYYY!
you're probably okay, since the superblock is intact
@nhinkle Wow.. I've never seen that before.
Good to know... I'll stop it tomorrow when I get to work then. @nhinkle, want the real reason?
00:29
@CanadianLuke is there a real reason?
@DavidPostill mentioned it was his birthday soon, so the room decided to start an event and wish him a happy birthday
Fair enough, but it shows up on the front page as a site-wide event which is a bit weird.
@allquixotic Servers updated; generating new SSH keys.
:)
Anyways, I gotta run. Chat later guys!
Bob
Bob
Any mod willing to edit @allquixotic's pinned message? It should read clients, not servers.
Thanks @nhinkle.
00:37
...I guess an SSH key update is not required. This is a client-side bug.
Connection to a malicious or compromised server would be necessary to exploit the bug.
> The information leak is exploitable in the default configuration of the
OpenSSH client, and (depending on the client's version, compiler, and
operating system) allows a malicious SSH server to steal the client's
private keys. This information leak may have already been exploited in
the wild by sophisticated attackers, and high-profile sites or users may
need to regenerate their SSH keys accordingly.
So a key update may be necessary if you might have connected to a compromised server.
@nhinkle Which is effectively saying "Update your key, just in case."
01:01
SSH key updated, confirmed working.
01:23
Vulnerability in #OpenSSH client may allow rogue servers to compromise SSH keys—please update ASAP! https://www.qualys.com/2016/01/14/cve-2016-0777-cve-2016-0778/openssh-cve-2016-0777-cve-2016-0778.txt
If you're affected by the #OpenSSH vulnerability, you'll want to generate new SSH keys if you've connected to servers you don't control.
02:21
If I have to have a double NAT because of an ISP Modem/Router -> Personal Router/WiFi situation. Is it best to put the internal router in the DMZ of the modem?
@MichaelFrank do you trust your personal router firewal/dns/acl/stuff that doesn't make sense, but can leave your modem as swiss cheese/etc.?
I'd still only port forward the ports required
@nhinkle I'm wondering about that...
@Braiam Start a meta post, and I'll answer it, once and for all :P
@Braiam Hmm... true.
02:32
Is it possible to do VPN though a router? Instead of installing it on all devices on my home network.
I have a WNDR3700v3 from Netgear.
Using stock firmware at the moment, but it should be compatible with something like dd-wrt.
Depends on the router's functionality. Gotta look up what it does
I was just browing on a VPN site, and they offer preconfigured WNDR3700. So I guess that anwers it.
Just wanted to make sure before I started doing anything. :)
sigh
This is the sort of thing that separates highly experienced programmers from neophytes or even moderately experienced ones.
Guess it's time to spend some more time learning programming...
It's a pretty damn popular SE site :P
There's almost always a couple of questions for it on the hot questions list.
Alright, let's get back to learning JavaScript!
02:41
cringes
It's been on hiatus since the start of last semester. Let's open up NetBeans and start reviewing...
@WilliamMariager What, you don't like JS?
@bwDraco That's putting it mildly. :P
What's wrong with JS?
Bob
Bob
Better (saner) than PHP
So many many things, but most of all, it's just a huge mess.
var j = "1";
j++; // j becomes 2

var k = "1";
k += 1; // k becomes "11"
Gotta love javascript :P
02:49
That's the issue with duck typing.
That's cause strings.
Bob
Bob
@WilliamMariager ...that's not much of a mess. It's still somewhat sane.
But it's the same :P In any language, i++ == i=i+1, but not javascript.
No, it's because you're typing the variable as a string.
Bob
Bob
@WilliamMariager That's also not true in the slightest.
02:51
var j = 1
integer.
var j = "1"
string.
Bob
Bob
You can get all kinds of funny sequencing issues in, say, C++.
Bob
Bob
Multithreaded code? Good luck.
Looks like I've started a thing. I'll just stop now. I'm not really into language wars. :)
Nothing, nothing, beats this one
02:54
In JavaScript, 2+"2" returns "22".
That's awfully unintuitive.
Anonymous
just use perl
Anonymous
wink wink
@bwDraco Nooo, it's not.
You're specifically tell it to add a string to another thing.
I think that the only sane way of doing this is to error out any operation on different types
Anonymous
@MichaelFrank i think that would have crashed or at least thrown a warning or an exception in other language
Anonymous
02:57
JS just silently does it
I know that code will become more verbose, but... CONSISTENCY!
Anonymous
@Braiam well that's how it's solved on perl
Anonymous
ie. eq vs ==
if I'm not mistaken === has the same effect on JS
@Braiam Nope. === ensures type equality as well.
02:59
@bwDraco so, it doesn't error out... but returns false then?
2 == "2" is true but 2 === "2" is false.

What the f--- did I just do? That was irresponsible of me.
Comment's been pulled. Absolutely irresponsible of me, in a context that is serious enough to potentially warrant a suspension from the site without warning, because my suggestion could put someone in grave danger (even if indirectly).
headdesk
I'm losing my mind again.

@bwDraco I don't see people being suspended because of recommending to encrypt shit with DES on ServerFault
@PatoSáinz Suggesting something that could lead to a security breach is one thing. Suggesting something that could endanger life is another.
The latter warrants a suspension without warning.

Kevin VermeerI don't think that we should have restrictions on electronics which are perceived to be dangerous. Is hosting a DigitalRiver Mirror a good idea?
Especially since mirror.corenoc.de/digitalrivercontent.net is going to close down
@DavidPostill That is a shame, good luck with it

I can't tone down the bass of this boy.
No controls but I was told I can do this through PC.
I do not have bass control there too. I use Winamp.
Bob
Bob
11:21
@Boris_yo Use a software equaliser.
Either through your audio drivers if available, or through your music player.
This is what I have there:
No idea what these numbers mean.
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo They're the frequency.
There is no mention which are responsible for basses.
I think mids are too strong.
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo That's because there is no good definition of "bass"
You're generally looking at sub-300 Hz, but it really depends.
Bob
Bob
11:24
Just try lowering the sliders on the left (keeping a nice slope) and see how it sounds
equaliser settings can be very subjective
and also depend on the music you're playing
@Bob I remember how I played with them. Ended up creating more possibilities than I expected. It's hard to stay on track narrowing down when there is so much to play with ...
Hmm, my winamp looks different
@Bob I play Epic Music.
@Hennes You need a skin.
And maybe a newer version
Installed in 2010
11:28
@Hennes Looks normal to me
@Hennes Mine is from '07...
@Bob Sure there is. Anything that Beats have too much of.
Just found presets but have no idea what genre has least amount of bass...
@Bob I'd say "Bass" is 0-150Hz. 150-250 I'd call mid/high bass. 300 I wouldn't call bass at all
Most high-end specifications call for subwoofer crossovers between 80-125Hz.
WinAmp!!! :D
@Boris_yo Just try them and see which one hurts your ears the least ;)
So my personal definition of "Bass" is anything that comes out of a subwoofer (with a properly calibrated crossover).
Course some musicians would define bass as anything that comes out of a bass instrument.
Bob
Bob
11:31
@qasdfdsaq Heh, wiki says 16-256
seems a bit arbitrary
16 may be near the lower end of human hearing, but I wouldn't really put a lower cut-off on it myself.
Bob
Bob
It's certainly below what most of my equipment can reproduce
250 is definitely near the high end. Most "bass boost" options tail off between 150-250
> Most people cannot localize bass below 100hz. With the crossover at 80Hz, it ensures that most everyone will not be able to hear where the low bass is originating from. A higher crossover will compromise the realism for many people.
So some people define bass as frequencies below which you can't localise the source. Though that sounds more like a technical adaptation to subwoofers than actual human hearing characteristics
Bob
Bob
Ah, gotta love progress bars.

Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Hm?
11:38
Need expart dawg...
It's also pretty crappy. It's a afterthought/bolt-on and not a proper install creator. Doesn't support EFI, and doesn't do anything you can't do your self with two commands and copying files with Explorer
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq It doesn't support EFI? But it creates an efi folder..?
@JourneymanGeek Wanna fly to my place and set my speaker?
Bob
Bob
Or is it just the wrong format?
shrug what would you recommend instead?
I've always used DVDs for Win7, and YUMI for *nix
@Bob Someone else complained in here a few days ago
IIRC it doesn't format the disk properly, if at all.
Bob
Bob
11:39
@qasdfdsaq It definitely formats.
So if you have an NTFS formatted USB drive, it'll stay NTFS. And EFI won't boot.
Bob
Bob
...I think. It did warn me it was going to wipe the drive.
The documentation says it doesn't format.
Bob
Bob
Odd.
It also added a bootmgr.efi
Also someone else did it and ended up with an NTFS drive.
@Bob That's just a direct copy off the install disk.
Bob
Bob
11:40
sigh.
Ok, what would you recommend for creating a USB installer for Win7? :P
If your drive is FAT32 already it may just work though
Well I just copy everything in Explorer...
Bob
Bob
Hm. Could do that.
And if necessary, use the bootsect command in the boot folder.
Bob
Bob
But then that wouldn't boot on legacy BIOS owuld it?
So, a large German store chain sold IP cameras without a default password for months
Bob
Bob
11:41
Ah, bootsect.
...which you can easily find on shodan
And, surprisingly, a lot of people have not set a password
And the camera even streams sound
Like I say, the W7 "downloader" tool is an afterthought, and doesn't do the proper partitioning and formatting the W8/W10 tool does
@OliverSalzburg Well... pretty much every chain sold cameras, routers, computers without a default password for decades...
Well, actually, they do have a default password. It's an empty string and the username is "admin"
Sure, routers were idiot-proofed a few years back because most people were too stupid to set their own passwords, but that doesn't mean we all have to be shocked when someone omits the idiotproofing
And the camera automatically opens a port in your router via upnp :D
11:44
(IMO, it's still the user's responsibility)
And it provides your wifi password through the admin interface
@qasdfdsaq Definitely. But because a lot of people don't know/care, there's a buttload of open devices right now :)
Now my ears hurt... Journeyman is definitely superior with his ears.
@qasdfdsaq That somebody was me
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Looks like it gets formatted to NTFS.
Let's see.
IIRC it does format the pendrive with NTFS. And makes it bootable. So it works quite well for older BIOS firmware boots. (or EFI with fallback).

But for EFI you need a disk format which is recognised. The motherboard maker might choose whatever that format is, but it must include a format which just happens to be compatible with FAT32.

And you need the right bootloader in /EFI/BOOT/ which is called BOOTX64.EFI on PCs
Bob
Bob
11:51
Format as FAT32, copy files, bootsect it. Is that enough?
No bootsect needed
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Even for legacy BIOS?
For legacy BIOS it needs a bootsector.
For EFI it does not care about the bootsector
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Then I need the bootsector.
At this point I'm not sure if the target machine even supports EFI installs.
Is it from 2011 or older?
Bob
Bob
11:54
Not a clue. Not my machine.
I won't have access to it till tomorrow evening.
Anyway, it should be easy enough to create a boot flash drive supporting both.
Not sure about that
Does the regular MBR way need NTFS ? (e.g. for long file names) ?
Other than that: going from classic/MBR to EFI is simple.
1) copy all files to a backup>
2) reformat as FAT 32
3) Copy files back
4) move EFI files from EFI/boot/microsoft/boot to /efi/boot and move move a c:\windows\.... bootmanager to BOOTX^$.EFI in that folder
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Nup.
Ok, then yes. Should be able to work on both
@Bob Rufus works for win 7 installers.

@JourneymanGeek I'm just going 7-zip now -_-
