@JourneymanGeek On one hand, I wanted to get my opinion on chat out. On the other, I really don't want to look at the comments anymore -_-

My dad got lost. In downtown singapore.
And they call me for directions WHILE DRIVING AROUND LOST
If only my mom had a smart phone with gps.... Oh wait, she does....
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek sounds like there's interesting backstory involved :P
@Bob My dad can't navigate for nuts
Neither can my mom but she THINKS she can

Me?
WHERE ARE YOU? AHHHHHH OH WAIT ITS NEXT TO THE BANK, GO TO BATTERY ROAD, CHULIA STREET. NO ITS NOT A TURN. YOU TURN LATER MARKET STREEEEEEEEEEET
That's roughly how the conversation went.
And that way I don't need to constantly re-work my directions based on where they are lost.
It's a pity Google got rid of Latitude. Would be perfect in this instance.

Q: What's the key to failure in roguelikes?

badpI've tried a fair amount of roguelikes. Nethack, ADoM, ToME, Crawl and more. However, I can only very rarely got into midgame. My records, for example, are reaching the beginning of the Quest in Nethack (exactly once) or reaching Snake:4 at xl15 in Crawl. What is the key to failure in roguelikes...

@bwDraco huh... Apparently Gaming.SE is blocked here at work.
I've been fiddling with roguelikes for the last month or so, primarily Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup.
Lots to learn...
Ooh. crap.
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup was the free game on PS4 last month... and I forgot to download it. :(
Are you sure? crawl.develz.org
@bwDraco Am I sure I forgot to download it?
02:22
@MichaelFrank or just pulling up google now, typing out "Golden Shoe Carpark" and bob's your uncle.
Ok, they found the building.
I'm looking at Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon right now. The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are ultimately roguelikes at their core, even if they lack the same level of difficulty (though from what I've read, difficulty ramps up dramatically post-game).
I've had a long history of playing mainline Pokémon, so I'm familiar with the franchise, but have not touched any of the side games.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I am?
@bwDraco Mystery Dungeon is pretty fun, but it's not a traditional roguelike in that you aren't punished that harshly for failure.
@JourneymanGeek you should see me trying to navigate in the car
"turn left at the next intersection" => *goes straight* => "no, you need to turn left. just turn left as soon as you can" => "are you sure, I'm pretty sure that's not right." *goes straight through two more* => "JUST TURN LEFT"
also, we overshot our destination
lol
that's typical
and I'm usually in the back seat so I can't even see signs very well
02:38
@bwDraco Pokemon: TCG, best Pokemon game. :)

So, I have this thing where I give bounties on other folks questions if they interest me...
However, I don't want to waste reputation on windmilltilting so... I have one simple rule - you let me know if one of the answers worked, and I'll award the bounty.
Just wanted to check if you're cool with that.
03:15
@JourneymanGeek Yes, cool with that. I'll let you know if I accept an answer :)
I assume you mean the monitor question right?

Remind me once bounties are possible for the question, and I'll throw 50 points into the pot :)

How do I downvote my own question? I deserve to be punished.

@Bob Probably broadly category based
I see they're heavily targeting womens clothing these days, maybe its attuned to that
You recently bought this dress, BUY MORE DRESSES
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Ya, but there are certain categories that simply doesn't work for. Like most of tech.
Not really recurring purchases.
09:35
(And the AI isn't intelligent enough to adapt to the fact that men don't buy USB cables like women buy clothes)
Bob

Smart thing to do would be to whitelist/blacklist certain categories.
Then again, my cables drawer would rival the wardrobes of many women.

I'm pretty sure I have upwards of 50 Micro USB cables by now
USB Type-C is going to be fun. Not.
09:36
My flatmate tried contacting a seller once putting in the order notes "Please don't bother including the free HDMI cable, I'm already swimming in them". They sent him one anyways
Bob
Bob
Probably more trouble to take it out.
Those things are worth some $1-2 anyway.
It was an additional separate item in the box
Bob
Bob
Oh.
Yeah, USB-C will be fun. On the other hand, the transition will eventually be complete.
Only two of my devices still use mini-USB instead of Micro
And they're bike lights.
Bob
Bob
Heh. I'm not actively using mini anymore. I think.
Might be the odd card reader somewhere...
Oh, one of the external HDDs.
But those are all fairly static.
There's also good ol' proprietary-USB

Yeah me neither. Bike lights need charging maybe once every year
Bob

I have some expensive shuffling music player that uses a custom port/adapter design

Bob
Bob
lol
Well, two
At least USB-C to Micro-USB adapters won't be too big
And in about 10 years' time when everything's transitioned, we will just have one port to rule them all
Until this happens again...

Probably the weirdest cables I still have and might use are a couple of Nokia pop-port ones.

Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq I went through plenty of the old pop-port phones.
Definitely don't miss the ridiculous audio/headset adaptor.
I also seem to have almost skipped USB3-micro
Thank god that obnoxious port was short-lived...

09:42
@qasdfdsaq Completely, or just in phones?
@Bob Completely.
Bob
Bob
I still have half a dozen external and portable HDDs using those.
My phone has one, but I've never used it. I don't have any portable HDDs using one
My only USB3 portable HDD enclosure uses a non-standard A-A cable
Bob
Bob
It's definitely a weird port, but I'll take it if it means I get reasonable transfer speeds.
Meanwhile USB-C gives 8x faster transfer speeds
Bob
Bob
09:44
@qasdfdsaq Yea, I was wondering about those a while ago. Just how hard is it for them to add a B port? -_-
eww A-A cables
People who design shit with them need to be beaten with a cat-o-nine tails of em.
@qasdfdsaq heh, I have something with a USB 3.0 micro ;p

Should I enable Secure Boot and convert my drive to Bitlocker encrypted GPT?
Maaaaybe?
I mean it doesn't really protect against anything if you just turn it off in the BIOS anyway
I believe Bitlocker TPM works independently of Secure Boot though
10:30
Yeah
it does keep certain classes of attacks at bay tho
supposedly
Presumably ones that don't involve the attacker having physical access to the machine
I think its for stuff similar to konboot
where stuff happens before the bootloader
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek not really, no.
Huh never heard of kon-boot
Bob
Bob
konboot implies physical access
10:32
oh, neat little password bypass tool
Looks interesting
@Bob replacing the bootloader with a dodgy one...
Would have saved a lot of trouble in the old days where I had to recover peoples passwords
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yes, but physical access means you can turn off secure boot anyway
short of a chassis lock
Well, accounts, overwrote the password usually
10:33
hmm
@Bob I suppose if I put a BIOS password on...
@Bob more of what happens after konboot starts
TBH I might just encrypt it then
dodgy bootloader, inserts stuff into memory so "encrypted" stuff's not...
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq then they just pull the cmos battery
10:34
@Bob There is none.
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq or use the reset button/jumper?
unless you're saying there's no way at all to reset the settings
We're sidetracked ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek The idea of secure boot is that you can't install a rootkit from the software side.
In an ideal implementation, the chain of trust goes firmware => bootloader => OS kernel => kernel modules.
Everything must be signed or it won't be loaded.
So e.g. you can't even install an unsigned driver (in theory)
I don't know if that's what actually happens in practice
@qasdfdsaq yea, FDE is the best way to defeat physical attacks. secure boot protects against certain types of persistent threats and privilege elevation, assuming the entire software stack from firmware to kernel is secure.
10:51
@Bob There probably is, but it's a laptop so they'll have to dismantle it and probably unplug the main battery
And if they have the time to open and dismantle my laptop without my knowledge I probably have bigger issues than traditional malware
@Bob What I'm unclear about is how certificates can be changed
@Bob Probably not worth it then.
I just CBA switching to GPT. So many compatibility issues...
Oh cool, we are talking about TPM
Apparently my phone has that and android's auth is stored there
I'll take TPM + FDE cause, well I'm lazy
and the mobo will have to replaces if I forget that apparently
That's what the manual says
@HackToHell Probably true
Unless you find some vulnerability in the TPM chip
May improve your life dramatically? lol
http://www.itechdeals.com/itechdeals-surprise-box-of-tech-limited-quantities-available.html
Yeah more unexpected junk into youer house! @Psycogeek
10:57
May
Might vs. may
Vise versa I mean...
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq that's very firmware specific
IIRC some let you add new certificates from a flash drive
others don't let you add certificates at all -_-
@Bob I'm assuming it can't be done from within Windows then
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq I... don't know.
