I've tried a fair amount of roguelikes. Nethack, ADoM, ToME, Crawl and more. However, I can only very rarely got into midgame. My records, for example, are reaching the beginning of the Quest in Nethack (exactly once) or reaching Snake:4 at xl15 in Crawl.
What is the key to failure in roguelikes...
I'm looking at Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon right now. The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are ultimately roguelikes at their core, even if they lack the same level of difficulty (though from what I've read, difficulty ramps up dramatically post-game).
I've had a long history of playing mainline Pokémon, so I'm familiar with the franchise, but have not touched any of the side games.
@bwDraco Mystery Dungeon is pretty fun, but it's not a traditional roguelike in that you aren't punished that harshly for failure.

"turn left at the next intersection" => *goes straight* => "no, you need to turn left. just turn left as soon as you can" => "are you sure, I'm pretty sure that's not right." *goes straight through two more* => "JUST TURN LEFT"

@JourneymanGeek The idea of secure boot is that you can't install a rootkit from the software side.
In an ideal implementation, the chain of trust goes firmware => bootloader => OS kernel => kernel modules.
Everything must be signed or it won't be loaded.
So e.g. you can't even install an unsigned driver (in theory)
I don't know if that's what actually happens in practice
@qasdfdsaq yea, FDE is the best way to defeat physical attacks. secure boot protects against certain types of persistent threats and privilege elevation, assuming the entire software stack from firmware to kernel is secure.
