Re third party coolers: Sometime it is nice to have a passive cooler.
and those te nd to be bigger
10:29
@R.Doto no foul, just don't do it again.

O_O
Someone wanna explain to me what this is for?
@Bob creating a portal into hell
(The image I linked is a photo of one of a series of murals in my neighbourhood)
Hey it's Geeky and Foxy
@JourneymanGeek That looks like chinese writing
is that chinese writing?
Bob
Bob
11:12
Ok, NF12 set up. That was surprisingly painless.
I think this is the first router that actually bridged the WAN port when I asked it to -_-
(also, it has a DHCP relay option. wow.)
@Bob dd-wrt or stock?
Bob
Bob
too bad it's a piece of crap and will never be supported by (open|dd)wrt :P
@qasdfdsaq stock, no other options
Huh. Never had a router with a "Bridge wan port" option in stock myself
Bob
Bob
eh, it'll tide me over until 802.11ac gets a bit cheaper locally
@qasdfdsaq I just deleted the WAN interface entirely.
This bloody thing has options for VLAN tagging o.O
Not bad
Bob
Bob
11:15
It does have a bridge mode I didn't bother testing (deleting the interface felt cleaner). I have an older Netcomm device where bridging just completely fails.
I had a Huawei Modem/Router that did that once, had to flash a hacked firmware onto it to enable the interface though
Bob
Bob
Looks like I can actually create a 'WAN' interface on any of the ports. Interesting, but useless.
Whoops, forgot to turn off DHCPv6
@qasdfdsaq its chinese writing
I wouldn't be suprised if it was a picture of the shop that used to be there 2ish decades ago
Bob
Bob
DNS Proxy => Off.
Also, I have no idea what it says.
Bob
Bob
11:18
O_O it supports 6in4
I can't read (chinese)
Bob
Bob
I don't think my actual modem/router does that.
@JourneymanGeek Which I could help, but I dropped out of that class -_-
@Bob heh, I think its standard for asus
@JourneymanGeek They speak Chinese in Singapore?
Then again I guess I've not heard of Singaporean as a language
@qasdfdsaq No, oddly enough, we speak english.
Bob
Bob
11:19
Wait, no, my main does do 6in4. Also, this looks like exactly the same firmware with a different skin.
We do have a local mangling varient of it called singlish tho
Bob
Bob
I wonder if it's based on openwrt/dd-wrt
Does this look familiar to anyone?
Why's there Chinese writing on the walls then? :-o
@qasdfdsaq cause the old shops of the colonial era and right up till the 80s had chinese signs?
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Mandarin apparently is an official language...? :S
11:21
Singlish... Can't be worse than Scottish
@JourneymanGeek Oh but everything's in English now? Interesting
@qasdfdsaq I had a friend who was scottish. Your local dialects of... whatever is impentirable.
Bob
Bob
> The official languages amongst Singaporeans are English (80% literacy), Mandarin (65% literacy), Malay (17% literacy), and Tamil (4% literacy).
@qasdfdsaq pretty much, at the very least
@Bob So English and Chinese are the official languages then?
@qasdfdsaq all 4 of those are.
Though they swap tamil with japanese at some tourist spots since most tamils can read english ;p
Bob
Bob
11:22
@qasdfdsaq wiki says all official (government, etc.) stuff uses English
@qasdfdsaq basically english is the 'common' language amongst everyone.
Bob
Bob
so I'm not entirely sure what an official language is supposed to mean
but we learn english + native language
Ah cool
Bob
Bob
> Singlish is discouraged by the government.
11:23
@Bob in some cases signage, some official documentation...
Bob
Bob
lol.
Now I remember why I wanted to go to Singapore
Everyone speaks English.
Bob
Bob
Heh. That also kinda works in Hong Kong.
Most speak (butchered) English. The rest speak Cantonese, though.
Don't need none of this "Do you speak English" and "Sorry I don't speak X" in 20 different languages that I learnt from going around Yurop
Wah laio. Like that summore. Expect evelyone's engrish to be bery bery powderful...
@qasdfdsaq Nearly everyone speaks english.
Except the ones who don't.
(If you run into a chinese who dosen't, he or she's likely from the mainland, or really really old)
nope
Bob
Bob
11:24
whoops. mixed it up
I should know this stuff :(
I'm from the Mainland. And really really old.
OK I'm not even 30 but I FEEL really really old. At least compared to some of the kids these days.
I think it translates to "Oh, Cock", the way James May says it.
Bob
Bob
There we go, all set up. Thanks again qasdfdsaq for the ebay suggestion.
Oh, and that's the only guide you'll ever need to singlish.
Bob
Bob
(it'll probably wind up in a drawer in a year or two, but, hey, $10.)

You don't get lost. You here hollanded. Or maybe Hollanded in Holland V.

"polite variation"
"more polite version"
...why is WPS enabled
@Bob true story. I was ordered to cuss folk out in the army
I purposely did it in the most posh british accented hokkien I could.
I enounciated the hell out of everything....
I immediately got ordered not to ;p
I prefer more polite versions ;p

London Bridge is a bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. It is a relocated 1831 bridge that formerly spanned the River Thames in London, until it was dismantled in 1967. The Arizona bridge is a reinforced concrete structure clad in the original masonry of the 1830s bridge, which was bought by Robert P. McCulloch from the City of London. McCulloch had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge numbered and transported to America to construct the present bridge in Lake Havasu City, a planned community he established in 1964 on the shore of Lake Havasu. The bridge was completed in 1971 (along...
Who knows! You might actually find someone who really does have a bridge to sell you.
At least that one works.
12:21
@qasdfdsaq only cause MS's tablets are basically PCs ;p
Awell, but you got to have a tablet these days to count.
and having the functionality of a full fledged PC is nice.
lol
Keyboards man, keyboards.
Which is why I just bought a tablet with a keyboard :D

Q: Location services on smartphones - which physical network does it use?

Sridhar-SarnobatI was pleasantly surprised to find that my iPhone was able to detect my location in India despite disabling my expensive data roaming (I live in the USA and use AT & T). I did have my cellular roaming turned on (local provider being Airtel). I had always assumed that without data networking enab...

Yeah I made it unavailable biatches!
Bob
Bob
Ah.
Nice.
14" too
That's bigger than my main laptop! :P
(Horize/Clevo W230SS, 13.3")
It's taken a year to get hold of a friggin tablet/laptop hybrid with dedicated graphics
And it'll be another year before I manage to get hold of a DECENT one (and probably replace this one)
Bob
Bob
Also have a Lenovo Miix 2 10 tablet/convertible but it's pretty shit.
Mmm I quite like Clevo machines, but I don't think they make any convertibles
12:27
>_>
I think 11 inches is my max for a laptop/convertable
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq Yea, they tend to be rather bulky.
My current laptop is a 13" convertible, and a chunky ass one at that
(says the guy who'd happily go 3x 27-28 inch for his desktop if I had the cash ;p)
Thing is there's absolutely no reason for them to be chunky, there's plenty of slim 13-14" gaming laptops with high-end graphics and better connectivity than the one I bought, yet all they're missing is a 360' hinge
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq 940M :\
How much did it cost?
12:28
Not to mention it seems harder now to get any <15" laptops with a DGPU at all, let alone a good one
Bob
Bob
esp. compared to Surface Book
Ten years ago it was impossible to NOT get a 13-14" laptop with a DGPU (mainly because iGPUs hadn't been invented.... :-P)
@Bob £850. Way less than half of a surface book, which is delayed till next year in the UK anyway
TBH it's only really worth £500-600 but nowhere else had it in stock. Except with a Czech keyboard.
12:30
Biggest advantage for me is it uses a traditional 2.5" storage bay, not the fancy new M.2 stuff, so I can re-use my existing 1TB 2.5" SSD.
That alone saves me a good £200 or so
Bob
Bob
2.5" in a convertible? wow.
@qasdfdsaq But those dGPUs were some really crappy ones :\
@Bob You can get 15" convertibles with multiple slots -_-
Bob
Bob
@qasdfdsaq I have a 860M in my clevo :)
1x 2.5" and 2x mSATA too
The only part I'm not happy about is the display. 3200x1800, but it's RGBW... was a bad choice.
@Bob Not always, I had a Radeon 9700m, and a GeForce 9300 and Quadro 4200 in my previous laptops
Sure they weren't high-end like the GTX 980's you get in dedicated gaming laptops but they were a third the speed of the high-end ones and you could actually buy them
Bob
Bob
12:33
@qasdfdsaq How much were they?
Nowadays you struggle to get anything 1/10th the speed of a decent GPU in anything <15"
Bob
Bob
I didn't spend that much on laptops back then :P
Just had some Intel or PowerVR onboard crap.
My first laptop was £1200 in ~2004, second was £700 in ~2007 and third was £1600 in ~2011
Third one had an optional Quadro 4200 but only in the U.S., mine didn't come with one :(
Seems oddly enough a lot of these <15" laptops with optional dGPUs only have the option in the US
Bob
Bob
...yea, that's above my budget at the time :P
Lenovo Thinkpad Yoga - U.S. Only DGPU, Dell Latitude 5000 - U.S. Only DGPU, HP Envy X360 - U.S. Only DGPU, Fujitsu T901 - U.S. Only DGPU
The £1600 one was a treat to myself for getting my first full-time I.T. job.
I like to brag about the fact I got my first full-time graduate I.T. job the day after I slept through my graduation.
But that doesn't seem to make me many friends :(
@Bob I'm told RGBW displays are actually nicer...
Bob
Bob
12:36
@qasdfdsaq I can see white dots on coloured text :\
Maybe it's just shitty drivers?
Apparently Dell and Lenovo laptops with the same display have a similar issue, if you don't install the right drivers.
But they don't seem to exist for Clevo :\
@qasdfdsaq practically every laptop I've owned has been intel graphics, but they've always been secondary systems for me.
@JourneymanGeek They're secondary for me too, but I like to game while travelling
ahh
I hardly travel.
And usually its seeing family and I need to socialist or something.
I'd be happy if I could just stick a CPU with a Iris Pro in it in my old laptop
And for the touchscreen to not be broken
@qasdfdsaq I don't think that would be a good thing :(
gaming's the one place hardware dosen't have too many corners cut
@JourneymanGeek I'm hoping more competition leads to more innovation
13:01
@qasdfdsaq alas, historically it's eventually ended up in a race to the bottom
Yeah, sometimes it can be
But on the other hand Dell are putting gaming chips into their high-end XPS premium machines, and not cutting corners. Which might lead to the traditional gaming laptop market to realise it doesn't have to bet fat chunky bricks with dated connectivity
@qasdfdsaq dell's in a wierd place
they just got out of the through of suck (tm)
I know I mispelled through...
whatever the things pigs eat from.
I've never really found Dell to suck, but I rarely need to deal with their consumer products. The Inspiron 1500 series were pretty fat mind you.
@qasdfdsaq their PCs was terribad
Most Dells I deal with tend to be of the Latitude (business) lines or XPS (Premium) lines or PowerEdge (Servers).
13:05
Granted, thanks to @Bob I've seen worse
Ah you mean desktop PCs?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ?
Yeah
@Bob that HP
Bob
Bob
Which one? I have two :P
@qasdfdsaq that said, the only other dell I've owned is a mini 10
13:06
I suppose them Optiplexes did stink. The GX620 was the worst.
@Bob the one with the unpopulated PCIe sockets
Bob
Bob
o.O
I ... have no memory of that.
(mini 10 is one of those things I wanted but couldn't afford, my dad has one, and its lovely, though it needs a SSD upgrade)
Bob
Bob
Oh. OH.
my god. that one...
So they'll happily put a 50 watt processor and a 50 watt graphics chip into a 15" laptop, but the minute you make it a convertible, or a 14" laptop, they drop to 15w processors and 15w GPUs, at best.
While my current laptop has a 37w CPU in a 13" convertible, and that's from 4 years ago ffs.
37w CPU and 25w GPU in 13" in 2011. Can't do it in 2015 though. Nope.

@JourneymanGeek Best part? I get to be the one to figure out how to get dual-display on these.
@Bob Lol
The current-gen SelectPC HPs have 3 display outputs from the onboard card.
That's actually more than the outputs from my Quadro card in the old HP workstation I'm using.
@qasdfdsaq I think the last few generations of integreated graphics allow that
@JourneymanGeek Yup, these are Haswell generation
Bob
Bob
13:11
@qasdfdsaq This was an i3-3xxx HP desktop.
My ivy bridge desktop has 3 onboard outs
I have no idea what they are capable of
We didn't use HPs for the 3xxx generation I don't think
Or maybe we did... Back in 2012.
Bob
Bob
That was the cheapest motherboard I've ever seen.
@qasdfdsaq We have Ivy Bridge machines with 2x display out (VGA + DVI) in the past.
This particular one was just the most epic cheap-out I've ever seen.
Hmm what was I doing when Ivy Bridge came out...
Bob
Bob
Not a single expansion slot.
13:15
Oh yes, I was unemployed
Bob
Bob
No USB 3.0 ports either.
@Bob my asus has DVI, dp and HDMI.
@qasdfdsaq I was back in school. Again.
Meh, I've seen cheap boards like that before.
A lot of OEM systems aren't built to be expandable. They sit in a secretary's office and are used for Word and Excel, then chucked in the bin on a 4-year cycle.
@JourneymanGeek Back?
Bob
Bob
13:16
@qasdfdsaq I've seen cheap, but they usually have at least a single (PCI|PCIe) slot.
@Bob The Raspberry Pi doesn't have a single PCI slot!
@qasdfdsaq I dropped out of uni twice
Personal issues
Neither do most embedded boards
@JourneymanGeek Ah. Same
Third time they were like, just finish up and bugger off already, you're messing with our stats
Last time was fun
So I submitted half a dissertation, got a 48% mark, and got told to gtfo.
13:18
I flunked stratergic management (good grades in the assignment, test paper was torn apart), waited a sem for it to be offered again, went back, totally didn't give a shit submitted a testpaper on an open book exam that would have caused plagirsm detection to explode
then got a credit.
most of my management modules was a bit shit. I shoulda gone dual IT but my parents were all "But there's no future in computers...."
@bob I'm not sure if somebody already told you or not but, the adapter is for when you've broken your original ethernet port on a laptop/computer - i think.
Bob
Bob
@R.Doto uw0t
@R.Doto erm...
there's a fair bit more that foes on for a usb -> ethernet port
I THINK that's a breakout for a non standard port of some flavour
@JourneymanGeek @Bob what did i say? lol

@bob I'm not sure if somebody already told you or not but, the adapter is for when you've broken your original ethernet port on a laptop/computer - i think.
13:22
@JourneymanGeek yeah?
That's incorrect
Bob
Bob
I'm pretty sure a female USB <=> male ethernet adapter would be entirely useless in that scenario.
Notice the fair amount of bulk
@JourneymanGeek Huh? I've seen them around quite a bit.
@R.Doto that's quite literally a 8p8c connector connected to USB
Bob

13:23
@JourneymanGeek in the wrong direction, no less
@Bob OOPS, i didn't pay attention to the USB side. sorry :P
Bob
Bob

@Bob i tried </3
@Bob second guess! Is it for a USB ADSL modem so it can connect to a router with an RJ45 socket?
@Bob the slots looks similar :P
@JourneymanGeek lol
@JourneymanGeek The fudge are we on about?
There's a hotel with boat on top?!
Alright, the real reason i popped by was: How do you change the line spacing on Microsoft Word? :( I've set the 'line-spacing' options correctly, to no avail. I have massive gaps in between my lines -.- This is a legit question.
Bob
Bob
13:41
Select them before changing it.
@bob i have :( Highlight the text -> Set Line spacing to single -> set value to '1'
Nothing changes
@qasdfdsaq I think the sands is designed to look like there's a boat on top
Bob
Bob
Hm. Acer R11...
@qasdfdsaq My first laptop was around 2002. A purple 15" laptop with a desktop P3 @ 1200MHz. No idea what graphics it had.
@Hennes A lot of people around me at school had laptops in that era, I only got my first when I started at university in '04
13:46
@Bob The dells I had often had a PCI-e slot. Sadly it did not work with most PCI-e cards
For me it was qa 3-4 month salary expenditure (5000 guilders)
My first laptop was a R51 ;p
My first laptop was ur mom.
Haha that actually makes sense, partially.
Only to you... @qasdfdsaq only to you....
Oh, and maybe @R.Doto who probably starred it ;p
@JourneymanGeek TEHE

Last.fm dosen't seem to tell you when a band you listen to have released a new album
I've not used Last.fm since Winamp went out of fashion
Actually I used it on my first two Android phones until it stopped being free
Bob
Bob
I still have it enabled on spotify
13:50
@JourneymanGeek Are you not able to subscribe to/follow specific Artists?
Also, I thought someone named a song this i.imgur.com/9V270Eg.png
@JourneymanGeek Spotify is the greater choice ;)
@R.Doto I basically just scrobble everything so I can discover stuff
I listen to stuff elsewhere
Oooh Lacuna Coil
Haven't listened to them in years
Since I broke my RAID array and lost access to my 10+ years of music, to be precise.
@qasdfdsaq I have my music backed up... I think thrice.
Might be 4x
13:54
@JourneymanGeek Same with me. It makes it difficult for the service to personalize recommendations, though - which sucks.
@R.Doto tho, I find that randomly listening to youtube playlists works well
@JourneymanGeek Does last.fm allow you to dl music?
@R.Doto no?
I used to go "hey, that looks interesting" then look em up on youtube
@JourneymanGeek Just curious :P
The new layout is a bit crap for that.
Oh, and nearly everyone here's a Taylor Swift fan, so I discovered her here.
13:57
!!taytaytay
Really, there's actually taylor swift fans in this channel?
@qasdfdsaq yeaaaaah.
To be honest, i secretly binge listen Taylor Swift
I think someone has her as an ava even.
lol
13:58
Judging by R.Doto's trolling you'd think listening to pop music around here was a mortal sin
I think we all have guilty pleasures ;)
Not everyone listens to stuff no one's heard of before ;)
Ah dammit
