9:05 PM
@SimonSheehan Yes, I really don't think that's appropriate
Especially considering that a sentence starting with "How to … " is not a question

@slhck I mean, we all work for our edits, that's just... seemingly lazy, and a bit bothersome to me.
Usually when I review stuff and see someone's already edited it, I ignore it. But this just makes more work, for everyone.

or see here, revision 2/3

I don't know how I can communicate it to him that he can do more.

Well, or not unnecessarily bump posts for adding a "?"

@slhck Exactly.
you really don't even need to have a ? on your question for the most part.

9:07 PM
Changing the title is okay, he's done it quite a few times, and I'm fine with that, but just a "?" …

Or changing how to How
Little spelling things.
Also, with all the reviewing I've done, I think I've found Super Users most used phrase - "Help is appreciated."

Now this is for rich geeks:

http://www.zagg.com/community/blog/love-hd-put-a-ring-on-it-with-best-buy%E2%80%99s-1095-hdmi-cable/

@SimonSheehan Haha. I like the word "kindly".

The things people do with HDMI...
@slhck Haha yeah. Its like people expect to post and never get help at all :p. I mean, thats not the point of the site or anything.

@SimonSheehan Yup. Countless times I've removed "Thanks for reading" :P
@SimonSheehan Or stuff like this
@Boris_yo I really wonder who buys that

9:13 PM
@slhck Thats the second largest used phrase :P "HOPE THIS HELPS!"
It's very nice though :)
Because it does mean they want to contribute.
@slhck I can hardly recognize you on the site with the avatar and a number with a 2 beside your name. It'll be a few weeks before I get used to this :p

@SimonSheehan Haha. Now imagine I'd change my name too!

@slhck Slowly wreaking havoc on my mind :p

Q: What is the value of project management software?

DariaI have an university exercise to make a research, that must answer the question What is the value of project management software?

"P.S. I'm sorry if this question is offtop."

@slhck Lolwat. Now thats a bit crazy xD

9:31 PM
@slhck Isn't it pronounced Envidia?

@DanielBeck I know what you mean, and, yes of course it is :P

Question: What would cause anything on USB to not install? I've updated Chipset drivers, made sure USB is detected by the BIOS (the USB keyboard works in there), but nothing will install in WIndows on USB, even Microsoft Mice
Windows XP. SFC runs fine, running MemTest86 right now, ChkDsk is fine, no viruses detected
Swapped Power Supply, no change. Front or back USB

Could be a dodgy USB host on the actual mobo, or could be the power converters for USB are dead.

Apparently shorts and a t-shirt are a bit cold in -8C..

@Luke First thing to do would be download a Linux LiveCD and see if USB works in that
As that would rule out Windows being the problem

9:38 PM
@SimonSheehan It's -11 right now in my town... Luckily, I'm inside working :P
@Mokubai That's waht another tech just suggested... I'll try Live Linux first, then USB card

We had snow today!
It was beautiful.
Until it melted.

@SimonSheehan It dropped about 8" of wet snow yesterday, and I live on the top of a hilly driveway... I didn't enjoy it :( Where in the world are you?

I'm out here in Ontario, Canada. It wasn't much, sadly :(

BC :P
I was in ON just before that hurricane came by

@Luke I hear there's 1.2m up at Whistler already! I wanna move there :p

9:42 PM
They're on the top of a mountain :P Lol
For the olympics, they had to ship in snow

Haha, yeah I remember that, and then they were afraid it wouldn't last.
@Luke Olympics were fun though, the torch went through my town and we all ran down a highway like fools with it :p

I'm anti-Vancouver-Olympics. I don't mind the celebration, but the cost is outrageous

Ohhhh yeah. OS X Lion virtual machine. Feels kind of pointless though :-/

Oh yeah, was insane. @Luke At least your province didn't spend a million dollars on the G20 weekend :p
@DanielBeck I found OS X virtual machines were....bad :/
Just isn't the same as the real thing.

How about the 1.4 Billion we need to pay back to Ottowa to get rid of the HST?
And I agree, OSX in VM is horrible, even just one level down

9:45 PM
@Luke Wait, did I say millions? I meant a billion. One weekend, a billion dollars. To have a bunch of people go to downtown Toronto. That doesn't include the riots.

@SimonSheehan Well, how else would I research an answer for this question without breaking my main system?

@DanielBeck Good point there. Unless you can pop in a liveCD to restore it.
Then again, don't risk it :p
@DanielBeck I thought you meant running an OS X Virtual Machine full time or something.

@SimonSheehan Not interested. I like the native performance better.

@DanielBeck Indeed. A lot of people I know use it because they really just want to use the OS

Carrier IQ: How the Widespread Rootkit Can Track Everything on Your Phone, and How to Remove It; affecting Android, iPhone (not mentioned in original article) and Backberry; deployed by your manufacturer.

9:50 PM
@SimonSheehan I paid the price (literally) to be able to use it legally and without wildly patching things. Don't see the point of a Hackintosh really. If I wanted a system that constantly needs work to adjust stuff and get things running smoothly, I'd get a Linux.

And I forgot to mention some dumbphones... xD

@TomWijsman "Update: Our original article stated that the software also came preinstalled on iPhones and dumphones, which has not been confirmed. That information came from this article at Geeks.com, and we actually believe that to be a typo. Considering it hasn't been mentioned in any other source, we're removing it until other sources say otherwise. Thanks to everyone who pointed this out." ...?

@DanielBeck: Yeah, has been mentioned in a comment and I think they have edited that in after I linked it. Not sure...
And why do they hide that in the middle of the article, the least interesting part. :D

I don't believe it. File Vault 2 cannot actually be activated on a VM.
I do have the recovery partition though.

@DanielBeck I hear you on that one. Now that I've been using Mac's more and more... I'm slowly hating using Windows and dread coming home to it :p

10:01 PM
@SimonSheehan Depends on what you do though, Windows does have its merits.
I currently have to use Outlook and that program is just a useless piece of crap, it's driving me insane...

@DanielBeck For me, the merits of using OS X now are much greater. I've just stopped using Windows machine at school in favour of much greater performance on Mac.

@SimonSheehan Haven't used it, but looked quite nice from what I've seen. Was about time they replaced Entourage.

@SimonSheehan Office for Mac is the worst.
Although 2011 is way better than 2008
And yes, Entourage was … uhm … yeah.

@slhck Mhmm, I was using it last week, quite annoying. 2011 didn't seem too bad. LibreOffice works really well I find.

Outlook for Windows though: If you click a link to a file on a network share, Outlook treats it as an attachment download. And since attachments are always tiny and already on your disk, there's no need to store it on a separate thread.
So what happens is that you click the link, want to save a 10GB file from the share, and Outlook locks up for 10+ minutes.

10:04 PM
Sounds fun

It is. Especially if you, IDK, wanted to download something in the background while processing your unread emails

@SimonSheehan Haven't used that. I do presentations in Keynote because they look really nice without having to do much, and for everything else … can't even recall the last time I used a word processor.
I presume you can't just open it twice, right? ;)

Well, no graphics card for me then :-( Serves me right for not living in the right country!

@Linker3000 Where do you live? :o

@Linker3000 What graphics card can't you get in the UK?

10:06 PM
@slhck I've heard keynote is really nice, we don't have it though.

Q: Three free video cards for Valued Community Members(tm)

Jeff AtwoodI've been doing some upgrading, so this means I have some extra PCI Express video cards. They are not too shabby, either. ATI 5870 1GB ATI 5870 1GB ATI 5770 1GB Now, the two 5870 cards are still fairly high end and require two 6-pin power connectors. But the 5770 only requires one 6-pin conne...

@Linker3000 We opened it up to international users. But...you might be too late.

@Linker3000 it's for people from around the world

@slhck No.

Read the final comment in the original post

10:06 PM
Jeff prioritized. Totally wrong decision.

Wow.
Thats.... really unfair.

"Edit: Contest complete! Selections are music2myear, jcrawfordor, surfasb. I did end up prioritizing those in the US because I'm just not confident I can get these cards through customs. I'll be contacting you shortly to get your addresses."

After he already opened it up, he shuts them down :/
And @studiohack had a higher vote count..

Ah, it's really no big thing with customs.

I feel bad for @studiohack

10:07 PM
Nope - as I posted, I have just received some HP server disks from a US supplier.

We order stuff from the US all the time, and if you send it as a gift, you don't even have to pay customs

Think I'll shift to ExpertsExchange!

haha

Bye!

@Linker3000 o.o really?
Haha.
I am tempted to lodge a complaint though.

10:11 PM
<'m not here anymore>

Although I think if I did, it'd end up getting shrugged off.. Or just cause a commotion.

Can you delete your stackexchange accounts?

@Linker3000 are you seriously leaving?

Yep

@Linker3000 but... you're a great member for us, is this one thing causing this? or is it the tipping point?

Q: Can I delete my account?

SauronHow can I delete my Stack Exchange account(s)? Return to FAQ index

10:15 PM
@SimonSheehan Nope - just feel let down so I'll go elsewhere and do other things.

@Linker3000 Thats unfortunate... Perhaps you should leave your account. You did leave a mark on the site.

@SimonSheehan I suppose if deleting the account deletes references to my contribs then that's a good idea

@Linker3000 You'd prefer to leave and not be known at all?

@SimonSheehan Ah - my words don't make sense - I was agreeing that I'd leave the account as is rather than deleting it.

@Linker3000 Oh okay, got it.
@Linker3000 Was nice knowing you - hope to see you again sometime.

10:18 PM
Yep - My profile includes my email address so people can get in touch if they want to.
So bye then! (Really!)

USB still not working :/

@Linker3000 :/ Bye.

@Linker3000 Bye

@Linker3000 Was nice talking to you on chat, bye!

@slhck Do you think lodging a complaint about this is reasonable? :/

10:23 PM
@SimonSheehan I don't know. It's a personal decision after all, so I wouldn't expect Jeff to change his mind
It's not like we didn't say that customs are no problem

@slhck Good point. Probably by the time anyone even really notices it, its too late.

@SimonSheehan To achieve what? He'll just put up his hardware on eBay next time. But from what it looks like Jeff didn't consider the reactions of the two users he skipped just to save some international shipping hassle he wouldn't be actively involved with anyway. He is one of the guys running the site, so his (personal) actions are perceived in connection to the site and just needs to be aware of that.

@DanielBeck I can agree with that then.

It's actually just like most of the declined feature requests … if he doesn't like it, it won't be implemented. End of discussion.

So, are there any electricians in the chat?

Q: How can disconnecting the battery from a laptop fix malfunctions?

Nate GlennI'd like a technical explanation of a fix I've seen for some HP laptops. The user turns on their machine only to find a blank screen; the screen doesn't even turn on, but all of the keyboard LEDs and the fan are running. The computer becomes very hot. I fixed this on my laptop after finding an a...

Am I just crazy or is the comment on my answer offbase?

10:26 PM
Let's just hope studiohack's reaction is very different.

@Shinrai I really have no idea about that stuff, sorry

In other news, reading up, what happened with Linker3000 exactly? I haves a sad now.

@Shinrai Jeff told us we'd have international shipping on the video cards he was offering, then suddenly took it away now.
And so the users we had voted for, aren't getting their cards.

And Linker3000 is one of the guys that doesn't get a card because of this decision.

Actually, two out of the top three won't get them.

10:29 PM
Seems a bit ridiculous for the contest admins... Just my two cents

@SimonSheehan Oh, I never saw that thread until last night actually so I didn't really look into it. That's a bit ridiculous though, yeah. :/

looks like Jeff decided. that's that... fair enough since he already gave me computer stuff

@studiohack :/

@SimonSheehan man! @Linker3000 left?! what the?!

@studiohack Yep, hes gone :(

10:42 PM
@studiohack Linker quit because of that decision. Given his application, I wouldn't be surprised if he already promised his kid the card or something like that.

If he did, poor guy :/

@DanielBeck, @SimonSheehan this is stupid. if you notice Linker put it in his application late, and still got a whole bunch of votes, passing most of everyone, to settle in for third...

@studiohack I think the entire thing is ridiculous now...

> Well, I used to hang out here but I don't any more. Email me if you want to get in touch.

@studiohack Yeah. Sad. :/

10:48 PM
Really unfortunate.
chkdsk is taking FOREVER today

Good night everyone

night @DanielBeck!

@DanielBeck Nightnight!

night @DanielBeck!

Hm, I mean, he could have really just tried to send it, it's not really different, you just have to fill out one more form.
hi @studiohack by the way!

10:55 PM
hey @slhck - like your new avatar

@studiohack Thanks, hope it's not too confusing :)

yeah, sad news. makes me mad. nothing I can really do though. what's done is done

Well, people shouldn't make promises they can't keep.

anyways, moving on

@studiohack Yep, no sense harping on it, what's done is done. Check out what I just posted, its a bit funny.

@SimonSheehan you wanna go edit it or leave this precious as-is? :P

@slhck Hahah, its tempting. He's really just promoting Ubuntu.

I'm afraid that he's editing posts. Oh dear.

BURNED.

is the oneboxing broken again?

11:02 PM
@slhck what, where?

Gah, I give up on this thread. Clearly some people agree with this guy because I've got a few downvotes but UGH LEARN TO READ, seriously.

Why is every post I make lately devolving into a long meaningless comments thread?

HTML escapes

I don't know, @slhck. I saw that and wondered. raise a post on Meta if you like...

11:03 PM
@Shinrai Hm, probably the wrong topics.
I wish I could just ping balpha. Do you know where he's hanging out normally?

what do you need to talk to him about? oh the HTML thingy
let me see if I can reach him - being a diamond has its perks @slhck :P

well he's responsible for chat and stuff :P
don't always want to write a meta post for minor bugs

@balpha - @slhck is wondering about HTLM escaping in the chat oneboxing - look for a message from him below
(@slhck he'll get this ^^ message in his inbox)

@slhck Nah, just argumentative users who like to say you're wrong without providing an alternative.

well, obviously the escaping is not quite working

there we go :)
but thanks @studiohack
so are there any guidelines on what to delete immediately after closing?
like, does it have to be seriously off-topic or bad?

11:08 PM
hmm, like bad spam, something offensive, or really off-topic

makes sense

You know, I feel like people got a bit too worked up over the free GPU giveaway.
Yes, it sucks that Jeff ended up changing his mind about international shipping, but the fact is, he was doing this to be nice. He could've flipped those cards on eBay and made $500.
3
Ragequitting because you weren't sent free things doesn't seem fair to Jeff or the community.

@nhinkle What I was saying. It's his personal decision after all.

Rage quitting clearly isn't the solution, but it really isn't fair of Jeff to make that decision, then retract it with no notice.

@SimonSheehan This. It was pretty tacky, all things considered. :/ (Also, it is not hard to get GPUs through customs. We do it all the time.)

11:17 PM
Jeff regularly donates his old hardware to Super Users (this is at least the 3rd time he's done so recently), and we also hold a contest annually in which we give away free things, and the blog has a standing policy (i.e. offer still exists) that we will buy you hardware if you write something cool about it.
@Linker3000 I'm sad to see you go, and hope you reconsider and come back sometime. I was surprised by this outcome as well, but I don't think anyone should take it personally.

@SimonSheehan Indeed; people do come and go. But when you're quitting you're only fooling yourself. More than a week later people don't think about it anymore. I've rage quit once but came back, because it doesn't have any effect besides cooling myself down...

I'm not really siding with either person, I think both made poor choices. Thing is: stuff happened, we'll move on.
Now, time for my dinner

..okay, now I KNOW he's trolling. The last comment is total nonsense. superuser.com/a/363146/43749

There's always two sides to a dispute. :)

"The computer is simply crashed. It is on. The reason you have to remove the battery and push the power button is to remove all power from the laptop so that it uncrashes. Yes, some of that power is in the capacitors, but it is supposed to be there -- that is the capacitor's purpose. The problem is simply that the laptop is crashed and it is on."
What does this even mean?
"Uncrashes"?

11:26 PM
@Shinrai Well I think you're both talking about different things

Doesn't matter, I believe that question needs to be closed for being not constructive.

But I honestly don't know anything about the topic

@TomWijsman I think it's a good question because it is a really common fix, and a lot of people think it sounds like gibberish or black magic the first time they hear it
@slhck We are, but he seems unable to realize that even when I explicitly point it out, so I'm done, lol

@Shinrai Common? Fix?
I've never heard about it. And it doesn't actually fix the problem anyway...

okay, I think I'm being trolled too

Q: Using Python on a Mac: It doesn't let me Script?

tamaraTamara-Lovs-MacBook-Pro:~ Tamara$ Tamara-Lovs-MacBook-Pro:~ Tamara$ 1+1 -bash: 1+1: command not found That is what comes up when I open the terminal. Tamara Lov is the name my Mac is registered under. I played around with some preferences but don't know to use it.

11:28 PM
@TomWijsman I used to support Thinkpads for Lenovo. It was not uncommon to get "My computer just sits there and does nothing when I turn it on" calls, and I'd say fully 50% of the time pulling the battery, holding the power button, and putting the battery back in fixed the problem. And not temporarily either.

@Shinrai But in the case of that question, isn't the laptop actually doing something, like fan spinning, etc?
Or are you talking about actually booting

@Shinrai This question is however about HP, such a specific fix for something that applied to one batch of laptops doesn't apply to the wide public. It's merely coincidence...

@slhck I mean exactly that behavior - lights, fans, but no POST or any other activity.
@TomWijsman It's NOT one batch of laptops, though, that's the thing. It works for pretty much everything out there.
I've heard it recommended for pretty much every brand you can think of. (I can't claim to have firsthand experience with all of them, of course, but I have heard of it being a successful fix)
Whatever it is, it's not that the machine is failing to start up and "getting stuck crashed" or something like that. When you pull the power and the battery, that's it, it's off, no more.

Hmm, then it is off-topic and should be migrated to Electrical Engineering.

@TomWijsman Now I just think YOU'RE trolling. ;)
@slhck (and speaking of trolls, I think that's more ignorance. "Python doesn't just work through the terminal?")

11:34 PM
@Shinrai Well, it could have been they set terminal to start python, which would be weird, but, oh well! :P

@Shinrai How so? You said that it's a good question because it is a really common fix; but all I see is guessing and debating why the fix solves the problem.
On Super User, this won't lead to anything useful until an electrical engineer that knows the inner workings of a laptop passes by...

@TomWijsman Exactly why I feel like I'm being trolled, but I've given up at this point. I'll endorse any cogent alternate explanation that comes along but that user doesn't have one.
I still think it's useful on Super User as someone who hears about it and thinks it's probably garbage is way more likely to run across it here rather than on EE. Although I do think if my understanding is correct, it's more likely to be verified over there. (I suspect the explanation I've always been given may be a bit oversimplified, but I'd have simplified to that level for this question anyway. No sense breaking OP's brain.)

11:51 PM
@Shinrai: But again, the question is out of pure interest and not about any problem. Such questions are off-topic by the FAQ...

Well, I think it's a enough of a worthwhile technical inquiry that I don't think it warrants closing, although by the letter of "real problem you face" it does fail. So be it! ;)
aaaaaaaand on that note I gotta go anyway. Later kids!

But well, I've cast my vote and others see what they'll do with it.
I'm getting a bit too strict having gone through a lot of questions over the year(s)...
I've got the feeling for this kind of questions with this one: Why are there 8 bits per byte? (Deleted)
Had to open a quite absurd meta post to get an understanding:
6
Q: Why was the question "Why are there 8 bits per byte?" closed?

Tom WijsmanTL;DR: I'm looking for opinions on why this question should be open or closed. Answer: I now understand why it has been closed: It is not a real problem because it has no practical use. Why are there 8 bits per byte? Why did such a valid and interesting question got closed? The user is...

@Shinrai Later, have fun! :)
