I got suspended again :(
yeaaah
so... flags on chat get handled by mods anywhere... and well, stuff like that can happen.
@RecycleBin If you behave yourself it probably will stop happening ;)
yeah right
you can never win so why bother
I can do all that
be abusive, make up rules, suspend users
@RecycleBin Huh? I've been in chat for, what, 3 years now? I have hundreds of thousands of messages sent in here, many of them with profanity or some kind of negativity, but I keep it reined in to the point that I've never been suspended from any part of SE, ever.
You can win. You just have to be aware of what you're saying and how it affects others.
15:17
yeah right more like youre a well known user so youre allowed to more
I really dont care anyway
im not a 'specical' user
No one really is.
ha ha ha
Heck, I suspect in theory I could be suspended.
@RecycleBin It's the other way around. I'm well-known because I'm generally well-behaved.
The absence of me doing anything bad, while providing useful insight that others find interesting/helpful/fun, is all I do to keep my reputation clean.
great men are almost always bad men
15:21
Cliches are always cliches.
I'm not great anyway ;p
im quite happy being a normal user not a scandulous moderator
It's not like there's a limit on how many people can be good, solid contributors to this chat. Right? I mean, that qasdfasdf guy came in recently and is around often and he's been more or less a regular since he landed here, and he's been fun to talk to.
Don't think he'll ever get suspended either.
lol
Its amusing considering the circumstances he came in in.
(sorted thankfully!)
what circumstances
Turns out he's really fortunate to be around a lot of fascinating, high-end, serious enterprise iron that I find enlightening to hear about.
15:24
yup
@RecycleBin: he and another user had a possible disagreement, a third user stepped in...
System worked as designed. Everyone's happy and friendly, and we pulled someone interesting into chat :)
you couldnt be suspended
thats the difference
@RecycleBin Let me put it this way. If something came up where @JourneymanGeek lost control of his sensibilities and his temper, and just started being totally abusive to someone, or misused his mod powers, he could be suspended. And would be.
Bob
Bob
shrug I've been suspended a couple times for profanity.
The distinction is that it would be extremely difficult to put him into a situation like that.
nah I doubt it
Bob
Bob
15:29
Somewhat related to my stance that profanity is not offensive in itself.
@Bob: I agree there
@allquixotic: stole socks, did toilet on their floor, that sort of bad doggishness?
Bob
Bob
It's more how you use profanity. It's just words. Words that aren't considered profane can be used in an equally (or even more) offensive manner.
exactually
@RecycleBin There are multiple high-rep users in the SU community who have been suspended or threatened with suspension on more than one occasion. That's to say nothing of the amount of high-level suspensions that have occurred on Stack Overflow (they're way, way worse over there).
More seriously though its entirely possible for a mod to be relieved of his powers.
Bob
Bob
15:30
@RecycleBin Don't mistake my stance as approval of your actions.
possible but will never happnen
They're worse because, among other reasons, there are more of them.
@RecycleBin: Its happened.
Bob
Bob
You've sent several messages that are offensive for reasons quite apart from use of profanity.
can you see a PIG flying past your window?
why would they be offensive
I was talking about somebody who none of you know
15:32
Who has hidden the Kryptonite? ;)
@RecycleBin: 1. General politeness and maybe cultural respect for elders.
Im normally calm
2. Lack of context
3. It was somewhat disruptive
lack of context is not rude
4. Especially since no one has any clue what you're talking about.
15:33
it may have been disruptive
@RecycleBin: Its a chat room. We have conversations.
well thats cus its extremley personal and a waste of time even explaining
yes
Bob
Bob
@RecycleBin Not in itself (again), but hurling insults without context is worse than insults with context.
Even insults with context are generally bad, but better than without.
If there's no point, and its a waste of time, why do it?
Bob
Bob
@RecycleBin If it's personal... why mention it at all?
15:34
because I cant damn well help it!!!!
what do you expect me to do, go and beat the crap out of the guy
@RecycleBin Why would you write an extended, negative criticism of someone else we don't know, in a one-way monologue fashion, without expecting us to understand the situation or comment on it? What is the value in posting it here? This isn't your personal blog. It might be alright if it were something relatively benign like blogging about your chemistry research or your sock collection, but not personal attacks.
Bob
Bob
There are other places perhaps better suited for ranting.
If you want to vent your frustrations in textual form without others commenting or getting offended, get a blog.
such as where
what are these places
blogspot.com
xanga.com
wordpress.com
Bob
Bob
15:35
(funnily enough, I was about to suggest /r/rant but they specifically disallow personal attacks)
it isnt personal to anybody on SU or stack exchange as a whole.
Bob
Bob
/r/angry seems more lenient
@RecycleBin: "No one has any idea what you're talking about"
Hence its not constructive.
I know
Bob
Bob
15:37
Actually, seems like /r/rant might be relevant
Ill try it but im sure people will just get sick of me
If you're expecting to be told "Its fine. You can randomly call your mother a cow, and drop F bombs here" That's not happening.
There are basically two general categories of things you can talk about here (in an extended, ongoing fashion) that are acceptable. One, talk about something relevant to Super User, Stack Exchange, or the technology/programming/coding/computer landscape. Two, talk about something that is specifically relevant to one or more other chatters, who are interested in what you have to say (even if it's off-topic). Both of those are fine.
Talking about something that is neither interesting to anyone here, nor relevant to computers at all, is therefore not acceptable.
@RecycleBin: So... here's the thing. right now, we're bothering. At some point, we might not.
Bob
Bob
If you want to just explain your situation in a calmer way, /r/offmychest might help (note they specifically say no ranting)
The people there are there to listen and be supportive.
15:38
@allquixotic: anything geeky, or nerdy goes ;p
ok ill try that.
(fountain pens, for example ;p)
Even non-geeky things like food or housing are acceptable if you're in a conversation with someone about it.
like when I told @JourneymanGeek that I love poppadoms
ive had councelling, which came to nothing in the end
Bob
Bob
15:41
@RecycleBin On that end - sometimes it can help to go to different people. What works for one person won't necessarily work for another.
There are probably communities of people out there in similar situations to you.
The trick is finding them.
how can I find them when I cant even leave the house without being stalked by my parents
Use the Internet.
theres internet but how can they do anything on the internet
you can talk, thats about it
@RecycleBin And without knowing what your underlying issue is we can't advise you.
Bob
Bob
Without knowing the details of your situation -- there's also, e.g., /r/raisedbynarcissists
15:44
Let me put it this way: when it comes to finding help with emotional issues, the Internet is one of the most liberating resources you can imagine. Getting others to support you can lead you to be a more settled, emotionally stable person. From that base, you can build up whatever strength you need to take action and fix your life.
Bob
Bob
@RecycleBin Often, being able to talk to someone who understands what you're going through can be a massive help.
until they get sick of you sure
who wants to listen to somebody complaining
Uh. How about someone who's had similar problems and knows exactly what you're going through?
I'm pretty sure they'd really want to.
I dont want to be complaining but cant help it sometimes
Bob
Bob
Actually, based on the little you've said earlier - /r/raisedbynarcissists really does sound like the right place.
15:46
okay
Bob
Bob
See sidebar on the right.
> In this subreddit, the focus is on our posters who are asking for support.
Bob
Bob
ya
ok cool!
Thread t = new Thread() { store.steampowered.com/app/325600 I'd love it if we could multiplay this @Bob @JourneymanGeek - might even rope in some of my SWTOR friends - if you guys were up for it... sounds like a fun dungeon romp. ;D Lemme know
} oops
Bob
Bob
15:48
> User reviews: Mixed
:S
I'll have to take a closer look later
been a loooong time since I last played a multiplayer RPG
Critic reviews give it an 85. I've played plenty of awesome games with that kind of review. The mixed reviews are mostly complaining about bugs, but that's what patches are for.
XD
Its been a long time since I played multiplayer anything
;p
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Hm. We're going to have to work out timezones.
(lol. I've been waaay to asocial in meatspace as of late)
15:51
@Bob Probably end up being a weekend thing. I can't play during daytime hours on weekdays for obvious reasons, but I'll be available late at night on Friday or Saturday night my time (which would be Saturday or Sunday daytime for you guys).
However.
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic That's about when I sleep :P
I have enough vacation built up that I will be off work every Friday, from November through December, inclusive.
Bob
Bob
Would have to wait a couple weeks though -- I'll be fairly busy at least through early November.
@Bob If you're nocturnal, you could end up playing late at night your time, and I'd wake up at 9 or 10 AM my time to play.
On a vacation or weekend day, of course.
Could possibly do a bit earlier, like 7 AM
But I'd have to set an alarm
lol
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Of course, didn't you know foxes are nocturnal? :P
@Bob .................. lol
So 7 AM my time is 10 PM your time, Bob
Would that work as a starting point to get a few hours of game in, say, late November through December on Friday/Saturday/Sunday?
Not every day of course, just whenever we're available
Bob
Bob
15:54
Hm. Probably.
we do have a chatroom for handling that sort of thing.
Bob
Bob
Actually 12AM/9AM (you) might be better.
@JourneymanGeek We do?
So i'm told ;p
@Bob That's easier for me, too. The later I wake, the easier.
and I'm giving myself a wee bit of spending money from nov onwards.
(Most of my pay's in the bank, and having no money sucks. so I should be able to pick it up soonish ;p)
15:55
my wake time opinions: 5 AM = !!no. 6 AM == ugh. 7 AM = urk. 8 AM = nice. 9 AM = mmmmm. 10 AM or later = only in my wildest dreams
lol
I'm free a big chunk of the day for now ;p
I tend to be awake from ~7-12 most days tho
Bob
Bob
Same price in AU and US.
Costs more UK.
Slightly cheaper SG.
I could buy the game for you guys on Wednesday.
Hope it goes on sale though, honestly.
Bob
Bob
15:57
Nah, I was just wondering if it would be worth doing the whole pay-and-gift routine :P
lol
going on sale would be ace.
@allquixotic: I can probably pick it up myself.
Love how sysadmins love playing video games. I remember when the hardcore ones were all into playing Quake 15 years ago.
Bob
Bob
I'll just chuck it on the wishlist for now. (so they email me if there's a sale)
@Dave: Games are my excuse for having a kickass box
hm
15:58
How to tell a good admin vs a bad one.. Ones that play quake were the good BOFH's and the ones that didnt were terrible.
I'll need to do that in the morning
(steams on my main PC. I'm on the x220)
:)
@Dave: I actually like a plot.
;p
Bob
Bob
I'll wait for a sale (or when we play)
