@DanielBeck: this is why i'd never use a all in one style system from anyone. Granted anything thats not a laptop, i have to build myself ;p
@JourneymanGeek They are somewhat upgradable, but not limited... it really depends on who is buying it.
Inside the iMac..
@SimonSheehan: I can upgrade my current desktop with no tools. At most a regular medium screwdriver
@JourneymanGeek I like how there are some new cases with Hot Swap, so you just slide the drive in, boom.
/me loves the case, other than the fact that the metal front grills are rusting, and it has a window on the wrong side
@SimonSheehan: I think mine has 4-5 5 1/2 inch bays, and something like 6 3.5 inch bays, all tooless
*tool-less
@JourneymanGeek I love the look of this case newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129087
Looks nice :O fancy
holy crap, thats a LOT of fans
Yeah :P No cooling issues there
Its quiet ;p
well, ditto, other than needing to blow out the thick carpet of dust on the heatsink every few years
@JourneymanGeek Oh god... But they do have these little covers you can pull out, that can easily be cleaned of dust
00:53
@SimonSheehan: let me put it this way. I replace my PSU every 4 years or so on average, cause the ****ing things get dusty
and one day, just drop dead
@JourneymanGeek Heh. That happened to my grandma's PC when I was using it. Except instead of dropping dead, it caught fire
If anyone wants to toss a vote in to help close this..

Q: Resetting Mac OS X Tiger administrator password without a disk

Simon SheehanI'm currently in possession of an eMac G4 running OS X 10.4. I went to install some software, and found I didn't actually have the password. No one seems to know it, and it's not written down anywhere. These were purchased by the school many years ago and are not really maintained, since people j...

oh dear
i've seen EXPLOSIONS
but not fire
... I am an idiot
@JourneymanGeek Smoke, a little flame.. the works
/me thinks he might be able to get his PIII running again
most fun i've seen is a voltage regulator explode

@TomWijsman Children really are wonderful!

Well, I think it's time to get me a new phone battery.
I just had it off of the charger for an hour, used the internet for 2 minutes during that time, and it was 8% down on charge. Earlier today, I had it off for about 5 hours, using internet/phone for maybe 20-30 minutes during that time, and it was down 80%...

anyone know of software (or what it is called) that will let me show slideshows/videos using more than one computer (and screen) at once?
like, in a slideshow, let me have the photo go off one edge and show up on the edge of the next pc?
@studiohack That's an awesome idea (such software is of interest to me too).

Stack Exchange gets a staggering amount of questions and answers every day.

Our goal is not only to provide great answers to the huge amount of questions, but to create awesome fossils of knowledge that can be consumed by generations to come.

New users on our sites need some extra TLC. Without them we can not grow our communities. However, often they are not aware of the rich formatting capabilities and various rules we enforce. Occasionally, they post “answers” that are not really “answers”. Sometimes they simply do not belong in the community they are trying to participate. Sometimes we are lucky, they are awesome and need to be enticed with a few upvotes. …

@studiohack: that would be awesome,but no one really seems to code multiscreen aware applications :(
05:45
@studiohack you want to use another computer screen as an extension of your screen? I swear I saw something like that once, but it was kludgy.

Q: Can I use my laptop as a second monitor for my desk computer?

Edward TanguayIs it possible to make my laptop's screen be a second monitor for my desk computer?

@Sathya Good morning.

3 hours later…
09:10
@studiohack You could take a look at Synergy: synergy-foss.org
@AlanB synergy isn't for a single system, is it?
hmm
could you do it with an extended desktop?
or.. er..
those USB thinggies matrox sells
(since they combine all the monitors they have into one large monitor)
Windows' extended desktop mode does indeed do that
ah hah!
win ;p
but some apps are finicky about having multiple instances run
09:55
morning all
10:53
@DMA57361 morning, how's the new place?
@Sathya hi, and I don't know; I start on Wednesday :)
@DMA57361 ah, my bad.
yeah, opted for a couple of days off as a breather / time to hammer out some Uni work
sweet
I'm going to take my final set of vacations for the year
2 weeks
Dec 2 - 18
going anywhere? or just time off?
11:01
@DMA57361 home +weekend getaway at a coffee estate(hillstation/sweet weather) + off-road rally (not me driving :P) + some more not yet finalized
ah, you beat me to both my questions with that edit :P
@DMA57361 hehe :P
sounds good
indeed
@RandolfRichardson hi, are you still having problems with your account?
11:48
@Sathya Really? I'm curious which ones. Surely it isn't a web browser, VS2010, Office, Acrobat, or Expressions.
@surfasb .. you're right, can't recall now :\
I think you are more likely to see programs just straight up botch installs and uninstalls. Which is frustrating, considering it is 2011

5 hours later…
17:16
Well @DMA57361 I got my RMA granted and a new motherboard should be underway
motherboard? I thought it was a HDD failure?
It was
because of the Sandy Bridge motherboard (or P67 really) S-ATA bug, which haunts 6% of all the P67 Intel motherboards
and it took a while to kick in, but probably caused all the weird error I had over the past year
so perhaps my drive wasn't even dead, just that my OS couldn't reliably connect to the HDD
so perhaps I even formatted it for nothing...
oh right; nasty :/
17:45
@Sathya Yes. I'm unable to login through the Stack Exchange OpenID system.
18:22
@RandolfRichardson one solution would be to just create a new account altogether, and then we could merge your old account into it. Might get rid of the login issues and whatnot.
@nhinkle I seem to be having some problems with Stack Exchange's OpenID system, which I'm beginning to suspect might be where the problem with logging in may have originated from.
@TomWijsman They have a similar one by the Onion where they have replaced the keyboard with their wheel
18:44
@RandolfRichardson Are you Nick Fury?
@TomWijsman @IvoFlipse So this is a faster way of typing?
Don't know but i prefer to type on a real keyboard instead of smartphone.
@Boris_yo Definitely!
With smartphone, my productivity suffers.
I hate onscreen keyboards, but I haven't seen a smartphone with a keyboard that I want either
so with the Galaxy Nexus coming out I'll be stuck with one for another year
What is so special about its keyboard?
Anybody knows what "Enable Desktop Notification" does?
nothing, but the phone looks great :P
If you enable it and I go @Borisyo you'll get a Desktop Notification with my message :)
18:56
How to disable it?
Click it again?
Yes. So only because of smartphone's appearance you want to switch?
@Boris_yo Off course not
Which smartphone you have now?
HTC Desire HD, which I'm passing along to my GF which has my old HTC Hero. So really I'm not doing it for myself ;)
Besides my contract is up for renewal
19:09
What are you doing with old smartphones?
with my old HTC Hero? Might pass it along to my little cousin
@Boris_yo There's a topic on SU somewhere about that
@IvoFlipse And then it goes on and on to future generations :)
@DanielBeck Topic about what to do with smartphone?
@Boris_yo I can't wait for my next next phone
Strange but i cannot message @shlck
@IvoFlipse And i cannot wait for my next next next next next next phone.
I have an idea for smartphone app/software! To create something that helps people remember or organize their deeply hidden stuff.
19:13
@Boris_yo Yes I think so. Probably closed as off topic though..
@Boris_yo Like what? Bodies?
@DanielBeck No thats for serial killers/psychos.
@DanielBeck Maybe some of them would be interested however, especially Cannibal Lecter.
@Boris_yo Darn. You could have solved a real problem for me there ;)
@DanielBeck Are you Lecter's relative?
@Boris_yo What message?
@DanielBeck How was the brains dinner anyway?
@slhck Okay when i type @s i do not see anything popping up, however when i add l your nickname does.
19:18
@Borisyo I've had the same problem with not auto-completing usernames as well
oh well
@slhck Until you added sufficient characters?
@Borisyo Yup. At least two. But now it works again
@Boris_yo Om nom nom
@DanielBeck Oh by the way, would it be okay to pester you with small questions about information retrieval in the coming weeks in case I get stuck?
Since when are chat favorites just a link list? Doesn't anyone here have anything interesting to say?
@slhck Sure
19:22
I wish the favorites included thumbnails of pictures.
@slhck I totally hate helping others with their computer issues, you should know that by now…
@DanielBeck Haha … if it just were a computer issue!
But actually I managed to implement a crawler for web and local documents, including a crawling tree and a graph representation, in about six or seven hours today.
@slhck Actually it works but for all other kicknames but yours.
@slhck Yeah I know, astronomers and telescopes. But still, close enough for me.
So I have a better run than a few weeks ago :)
19:24
@slhck Nice.
@Borisyo Hmmm, interesting!
Software that would allow end users to click on drawers, shelves etc. and see their stuff popping up.
I have a lot of stuff i don't remember where i put so i would use that software to locate.
@Boris_yo … "What is stacks in OS X?"
@slhck What's the origin of your username anyway?
@slhck Wha?
19:26
@slhck A horrible idea
@slhck I don't have MAC.
@DanielBeck "soulhack" with the vowels stripped out, named after a music track I really loved years ago
@Borisyo Don't take it seriously, I thought we were playing Jeopardy :P
@Boris_yo Click somewhere and see your stuff pop up: lif3.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/MacOSXDockStacks_thumb.jpg
Well i need pictures of drawers.
Good search.
This could be web based app but charging monthly would be bad idea.
@slhck It's not the one I find when googling for that, is it?
19:29
@DanielBeck The nice thing is that it's not taken anywhere yet. Except for Gmail.
@DanielBeck if you mean this?
@slhck That's cool. But your real name is uncommon enough to not be taken either, isn't it?
Any opinion about this one?

http://www.tinydeal.com/blue-flexible-usb-silicone-waterproof-keyboard-foldable-key-panel-for-pc-laptop-clapkb01-p-2193.html
@slhck That's the one. Not my kind of music.
@DanielBeck Note mine either anymore :)
that was long ago
@Boris_yo Will be absolutely horrible to type on.
19:32
@TomWijsman @Greg How is it going?
@DanielBeck Tried? Personal xp?
at some point I figured I'd just use my real name online, yes, but the pseudonym sticks around because it's short
Fine, procrastinating, last week was a lot of work...
@TomWijsman Say, you know why my laptop's battery charges way slower when laptop is on compared to when laptop is off?
@slhck I always thought it's like xkcd, some random character sequence not used by anyone else.
@DanielBeck Haha, yeah.. I thought that would be confusing for others. I think I've missed a few @-replies already because of that.
19:34
@Boris_yo No. Just a lack of imagination I guess.
@slhck "Would be"? Am I the only one who didn't get it?
@DanielBeck ah … most probably you're not the only one! you're the first one who asked though
I should reaaalllllly do something other than sitting in front of the computer all day.
@slhck Go for a run.
@slhck Bicycling
no thanks :P
@slhck Or skipping with 5M HDMI cable
@Boris_yo That's more like it!
19:39
@slhck How about changing hard drive for 30 minutes to give it a rest in sauna?
Heh. Recently a colleague asked me whether I knew that web site that's on the top of Google results lists all the time with programming questions. And there's even a complete network of sites for all kinds of topics, like cooking and physics!
One investor contacted me and wanted to by my SuperUser nickname for 300K but i said no!
Who needs 300K bills. I am not his accountant.
@DanielBeck That's neat. I'm still trying to get my girlfriend to sign up for some sites.
@Boris_yo Uh, what?
I almost felt ashamed of SE when I saw that our course material linked to this question, particularly when it was at its first revision.
@slhck So you fixed it. That's what happens with these "Wikipedia vs. real encyclopedias" comparisons, too.
@slhck Joke gone bad
@DanielBeck You don't like the foundation of Jimmy?
19:44
@Borisyo haha … well I can imagine some people would pay real money to get rep here.

Q: error: invalid suffix "b11111111111111111111111111111111" on integer constant

Matthew HogganI am using g++ version 4.1.2 on a RHEL 5.7 x86_64 box. This builds just fine with g++ version 4.4.5 which comes with RHEL 6.0 x86_64. What does this compiler error mean and how do you fix it? [mehoggan@hoggant35002 C]$ g++ -Wall -o binary ./binary.cpp ./binary.cpp:2:5: error: invalid suffix "b1...

best error I've ever seen
@Boris_yo I don't care that much about it. But it's usually some computer magazine that does the comparison and finds some articles on Wikipedia lacking. After the article is released, they're then usually fixed and expanded within hours, no matter what topic. It's been a while since I read something like that though.
@slhck Are you a programmer? Is it CURL?
@Borisyo I'm not a programmer … I write programs from time to time :)
@slhck Programmers do not write programs?
@slhck I thought it's their job...
@Borisyo Programming is not my job ;)
I think you could call @DanielBeck a programmer.
19:48
@slhck What is the difference?
Apart from that, I don't even consider myself a good programmer. In fact, I don't even like programming.
@slhck What is the difference between programming and writing programs?
@Boris_yo No. Who's Nick Fury?
@RandolfRichardson Punisher's sidekick.
@Borisyo That's not what I said. I said there's a difference between people who call themselves "programmers" and those who (also) write programs.
At least in my opinion there is.
19:52
@slhck "...and those who actually write programs". Is that what you meant?
@Borisyo No, but … I mean, it's just a definition thing. Some people can play the guitar, but they wouldn't call themselves a "musician". You know?
Sounds more like a hobbyist vs. professional distinction @slhck?
@slhck Self-called programmers, got it!
@slhck Enthusiasts but not programmers. Got it!
@DanielBeck In a way. Or at least with regards to passion/dedication about what you're doing.
Just my two cents though.
@slhck Just as i would call myself smartest technician when actually i lack certifications.
19:54
@Boris_yo Haha.. well you could be, even without certifications!
@slhck Would you be ashamed to bring this thing to your most important business meeting if you had no other choice of what to bring?

http://www.tinydeal.com/superman-shaped-4-ports-expanded-usb-20-hub-adapter-for-laptop-notebook-computer-blue-chb-40998-p-33115.html
@slhck In terms of USB hub.
@Boris_yo Of course I would bring this.
@Boris_yo At least they didn't make the obvious... err... slot placement mistakes.
hahaha
In fact I asked my supervisor if we could buy this webcam
@slhck This could hurt your reputation and impact on deal.
@slhck Star Trek?
yup.
@slhck You like Star Wars less?
@Boris_yo Nobody answer this question, it cannot end well!
I was gonna say …
never mind :P
runs
19:57
@DanielBeck A war between fans?
@Boris_yo Who knows. I just want to keep the peace.
Hey @slhck you no longer have the least pronounceable user name in chat!
