@nhinkle gratz

15 hours later…
15:02
howdy all
I hate snow :(
@DMA57361 why?
cos (a) it's here and (b) it's a pain in the arse
and (c) the UK (except maybe Scotland) can't handle it properly at all
Lol
ya that would make sense...
I live in an area of no snow... so I kinda miss it
huh, well we get snow ~once or twice a year
usually it lasts ~3/4 days before it melts away
in which time the entire country grinds to a halt...
lol.... wow...
my parents live in colorado... where it snows a lot...
nothing shuts down those towns...
Once went through a pass to get to their house... they shut it down to "cause an avalance"
15:08
nice
I waited for about an hour, and then they let us through saying that they couldn't get it to work...
That was the fastest I've ever driven in snow before... :)
I bet
Really, that's the problem, because we (the country "we") don't get much it's hard to justify spending much money on it
Ya... I bet if we got snow where I live now, everything would shut down... wouldn't know what to do
urgh
I need to close my curtains so I can't see it getting heavier :(
sad day
15:12
@DMA57361 I think that's a large part of it. Here in Sweden I'm walking in 20cm now, but I'm still enjoying it. I have spiked tires on my bike, on cars they're mandatory, and the snowplows come by with a certain regularity.
exactly
almost no one in this country (me included) uses winter tyres, let alone anything spiked, most roads don't get cleared, etc
check the news: "Heavy snow and ice bring travel chaos across UK" bbc.co.uk/news/uk-12025538
@DMA57361 (And I live in the south.) :-)
and the quote "The snow is forecast to continue in many parts of the UK, with up to 25cm expected in some areas of England" - yes, only 25cm
least I got my weekly shop in this morning :D
15:17
Did I seriously catch you all while you were still talking?
no, we'd just stopped... ;)
also, hello
My 2tb hard drive came in :-)
spacious
15:21
I told my mom that it was only $10 more than the 1TB which was only $20 more than the 500GB >:-)
What would be the best software to backup on this thing, you'd say, if I was planning to restore it from backup immediately after nuking the coputer?
erm, probably whatever software you want to run after the reinstall...?
hellow @digitxp
oh wait, you mean what to use to make the backup?
and off course @DMA57361 :)
ah, howdy @IvoFlipse
15:23
restoring @digitxp? do you want to create images of you system?
I've found Windows Backup to be as straight forward as it can get
use SyncBack for files
to systematically let it backup certain document folders
for the rest, reinstalling Windows 7 is sometimes a blessing, if only to get rid of the bloat you regularly accumulate :P
like the 4 screenshot utility tools
the bloat has come to the part where it's a 4 minute bootup, then 3 minutes of waiting for Chrome to start
heck, now it even got to the point where there's too much dust in the vid card
that
@digitxp good grief
s why I want to back up
So it seems that Windows' built-in backup is good?
@DMA57361 It's a 4yo comp
still, that's not good
well you don't want to backup your entire OS, because that's where the bloat will be
just use ninite to reinstall most software
and make sure you have all the serials ready if you use anything 'important' that requires it
but for a fresh OS install, windows backup is decent
it's very frigging large, but heck it's automatic
(windows 7 though!)
15:29
I just have everything important in users redirected to my D:
I've come to realize that hardly anything is really important :P
indeed
so it redirects my documents and FF profile, not much else
I'd used to backup bookmarks, settings and such
anything on my desktop or download folder
but everything is my download folder is probably crap
and I'll simply redownload them when I need it
because most installers are outdated after a month
and something that's important is safely tucked away in a document folder
@digitxp My computer is five years old. Still boots Windows 7 in under a minute. Have not reinstalled yet. Although my other install (with the Office and VMware installs) admittedly takes a good deal longer.
Basically I have one Windows for gaming and multimedia, and another for mucking around.
it depends on how you use it I guess
15:36
Indeed.
but I try out a lot of stuff, so that bloats it over time
but I don't mind to reinstall, as long as it's my choice to do so :P
Exactly. I usually only try stuff on virtual machines. :-)
I hate having to restore my system, because I wrecked it
Mmm, time for my second coffee.
well I'm not worried for spyware/malware, but like these useful screenshot tools, you can't really go around certain tools having to launch at startup
though hoeray for Soluto!
15:38
Soluto didn't really help :(
What would be best if I want to look at my files on the drive without restoring?
is the computer broken then?
ish
the video card seems to be wonky
15:49
but how does that hamper your from reclaiming your data?
it doesn't
I'm just paranoid beyond reason
@digitxp %appdata%
I meant if I were to use a backup util
@digitxp no clue... I don't .. backup (gasp)
@digitxp When it comes to wonky, reason has no limits.
:-D
15:55
@Sathya I don't back up either, I'd like to but 2TB takes a while and I've got nowhere to put it :)
There's no way I'm backing it up to DVDs
@Mokubai those DVDs die faster than you can say hello
you shouldn't use 2Tb as your OS drive :P
I would get an external drive to back up the wifes machine as well as mine, but the big drives they are not cheap
It's a 2 x 1TB raid array, so double trouble :D @IvoFlipse
and you should forget about backing up movies and other large files
I would 'dislike' to loose my music, but I wouldn't die from it
losing the movies/tv-shows would be a minor annoyance
Aye, to be honest the stuff I actually care about backing up is likely to be maybe 20Gig
16:02
but losing pictures and/or documents is a lot more important
and again, pictures can get out of control
All my games come off Steam, so that's an internet issue only and my internet is unlimited and fast so no worries there
so there's a core set that I will backup several times for safety measures
the rest is just good faith in my hardware :P
As you say, films and media may be annoying to loose, but I wouldn't loose any sleep over them going
it's not worth the effort trying to back it up :P
The wedding photos are the ones I care about most, and they're backed up on the wifes machine :D
16:04
even worse ;P
then they're on Facebook by now
well off course that's actually safe from a data consistency standpoint
Argh, I keep remembering why I hate facebook
face recognition? ;P
All the pointless status updates, it's almost as bad as twitter!
"I just done made me a sammich!"
"Your brother just got a pointless achievement in a PS3 game, why don't you buy the game and get the achievement too?"
16:06
You should see what middle schooler's put on FB.
Half of them are flirters: "HAYHAHAHAH Great time at Taylor's house! <3<3<3<3"
I like how my RSS readers can pull in Facebook shared material
The other half are idiots.
but if everything I 'like' was shared
nobody else's posts would show up on anyone's wall, as my feeds would bury them all :P
Joe Abson likes Hi. Hi. Hi? Hi! on Clicklylikes.
I write a crap of philosphy on my wall and everyone likes it.
Nobody liked when I got my braces off way back when
I avoid the place like the plague, unless somone asks me in person why I haven't added them as a firend
16:09
@Mokubai same here.... lol
I hate FB so much
I simply ignore it most of the time
It's such a pointless time sinking place... Farmville? Why not go play a real game. Chat with friends? Why not go out and share a pint with them...
what kind of projects are y'all working on?
because I don't have any? Instead I hang out here and call @Sathya my buddy ;P
don't get me started @digitxp
@IvoFlipse :P
16:12
I have to actually enter my password each time I go on it, even though I have the "Remember me" thing checked, the cookie must expire too soon (or is that not soon enough)
If I don't find anything better to do over winterbreak I'm gonna invite ppl over and work on my nanowrimo
I've got a couple of possible worky projects, but I'm too lazy to actually work on them :(
you should use Lastpas @Mokubai ;P
nanowrimo? As in iPod Nano as a wrist watch?
LOL @IvoFlipse
The Firefox password thing remembers my facebook password (and not much else to be honest) I've got a password program on my mobile...
16:14
@digitxp I'm on a paid vacation
where @Sathya?
@Sathya for how long?
"NaNoWriMo is an annual (November) novel writing project that brings together professional and amateur writers from all over the world."
@IvoFlipse my current job is a paid vacation :P
you mean that you have to work in the States?
16:16

facebook rants!

@IvoFlipse Sorry, perhaps I'm creating noise.
I thought you lot spent all your time setting off fireworks and shooting your guns in the air @Sathya
@IvoFlipse :P
heck no @oKtosiTe, why would that be noise?
@Mokubai part of the package deal :P
16:17
@IvoFlipse I didn't scroll up to confirm that that wasn't already established. :-)
Still didn't
Like as you step off the plane at the airport "Here's your complementary handweapon and bullets, have a nice day sir." type thing? @Sathya
@Mokubai more like when you check-in to the hotel :P @Mokubai
:-)
I can't say for sure whether you're joking. :-D
hellow ladie
have you lost your ways @rchern?
16:28
Haha
is asking her first question on SU!
oi! not about web apps I presume
How are there only 7 [tweetdeck] questions? I figured there'd be a bunch more. Am I missing something about it not being on-topic?
it's just because SU doesn't really have a public that 'likes' social networks
Unacceptable. (:
well I'd love to draw in a more casual crowd too, but that's not easy
I actually think that's the reason behind that meta question of yours
2
Q: How to deal with "How do I do <X action> in <Y webapp>, where there is no way to perform X?

DanTilkinThe No Answers section of the unanswered tab seems to have a lot of questions where people are trying to figure out how to perform a certain action in a given webapp. If this can't be done, and there's no easy workaround, the question often sits unanswered. Generally no one will be certain enou...

16:31
@IvoFlipse Indeed, I go out of my way to e-mail webmasters that prefer contact by twitter.
are you aiming at Jeff here? ;P
Hehe, my Tweetdeck question is pretty much this format I fear ^^^^. ):
Wow a dual core cell phone...
Most smartphone cellphones are technically dual-core these days
One slow core to do the phone and data related stuff and a fast application processor for the front end
But that looks a very sweet phone
@Mokubai i didn't know that... but yes it does
16:41
The "radio" core is fully independant of the main core and nothing but the radio can run on it so it's more of a coprocessor than another core so I guess to call it dual core could be wrong...
ty]
yttttttttttttttttttttttt
crosses fingers
@IvoFlipse Holy crap, an actual user knows about our meta? q:
@rchern fancy seeing you here
opps, ignore those
I was actually thinking the same thing lol
16:43
@Sathya I've just asked my first SU question. \o/
Which will likely die a slow, painful, unanswered death.
WHAT!? Wow... congrats! @rchern
So I see

Q: Move backwards through Profile/Conversation column history in Tweetdeck?

rchernIn Tweetdeck, you can view conversations by clicking the in reply to portion of tweets. This opens up a column in overlay. This overlay column is also used when you open up a user's profile. The column can be closed by clicking the X in the upper right of the column or by pressing Esc. Let's ...

fires up tweetdeck
often they are also dual processor, where they have a dedicated gpu (which they previously hadn't) @Mokubai
@DMA57361 Was that you dozing off on your keyboard?
If anybody know everything about tweetdeck/twitter it's gotta be @Sathya... he's constantly tweeting...
and getting free stuff b/c of all the tweets
16:45
heh :P
sadly @rchern you confirm Jeff's answer with your question :P
your question is far too obscure!
I actually use my own client :p
well dabr, actually, on my domain anyways
@IvoFlipse did you see today's one cool thing?
I go through Twitter spurts. I'll use it for awhile, then pretty much just forget about it. Rinse and repeat.
I'm somewhere in a spurt now. (;
@rchern I'm always in spurts. I'm surprised @IvoFlipse & @KronoS hasn't unfollowed me / blocked me yet :p
16:52
@Sathya you're actually not as bad as lifehacker and howtogeek
but getting there
:P
What's your id?
@rchern @SathyaBhat
@KronoS :P I've cut down :P
@rchern beware you may regret ;)
16:54
Yay! New follower request!
@Sathya oh that's so terrible....
I don't understand why people hate justin beiber so much... I mean his music sucks... but why all the hate?
even better
17:21
@oKtosiTe no, my daughter was climbing to look at the snow out the window...
17:54
Hello, Nexus
did you buy it?
well guess I'll just have to wait for a decent custom rom for my HTC Desire HD
@IvoFlipse yep
I hate the world
hehe
18:11
I so want this kind of hardware
though kind of lame that it only does the face and not entire body mition
and I wonder what the accuracy would be when you look at the whole body, sub millimeter?
CRAAAAAAAAAAP
another blue screen
> Your computer was unable to start, Startup Repair is checking your system for problems...
how did you manage to do that?
@rchern any sign as to what caused it, or is it just another random unidentifiable Windows crash?
normally there's a crash report dumped unless you turned it off
18:25
it rebooted auto, must have that setting on
heh Startup Repair cannot repair this computer automatically
hmm, it did boot up ok this time though

What have I done to you computer gods?!
you grieved us by asking social network app-questions on SU
Heh.
And I realize I know nothing about Chrome profiles.
Nothing to restore, looking at the files in my appdata dir, they've been wiped.
what have you lost?
All my extensions
My extensions folder in appdata is empty.
haven't you set up sync for those things?
No. I don't want things synced home/work and I have 1 computer at home. Why sync?
18:56
because it also backs up
simply don't use sync at work
only use it at home
@rchern you don't use the same extensions at home/work ?
Some of them yes, some of them no.
I've got everything back but the extensions directory.
@rchern using Windows 7?
If so, then right click the parent folder and try "Restore previous versions" , may be that a copy was stored...
I did that.
Restored it.
Opened Chrome, and watched the folder empty again.
Wow, that is weird
I love when programs correct that kind of thing for you, like a teacher scribbling over your essay saying "That's all wrong now do it again and do it properly this time!"
19:07
when I see members with 3k+, 13k+ 17k+ and 23k+ rep having small niggly problems suddenly I don't feel so bad and such a moron.
you shouldn't @tombull89, everybody's is a n00b at something
Wil
Wil
@DMA57361 You will be surprised.... it is terrible in some places (Working way through chat!*)
then again 9 months as first-line support in a school i've learned things I would have if i was in, say, an office. Still, some teachers (and kids) know me to know everything about computers ever, and despite me being 21 then can't understand why it's not possible :P
Alright, Chrome is the only thing so far that was corrupt and got that restored. Better not get another blue screen. >_<
I learned a lot working in an office for 2 years @tombull89, but I spend a lot of those 2 years here and stuck in Google Reader :P
19:14
@tombull89 the only person that is a moron is the person who is unwilling to learn
3
@Ivo Flipse, that's more than my entire working IT career. And I'm certainly willing to learn, just not really able to. I expect you know how hard it is to get training for IT guys, even so more in schools. I'd like to do a CCNA but paying £2000+ out of my own pocket is a lot.
o.O
I thought that clipp thing was a joke...
*clippy
Wil
Wil
You can always just read books and pay about £70 to sit an exam...
you can always just start your own business and waste time reading books, like @Wil recommends
Wil
Wil
... I think I need to read the history and not butt in to conversations!...
19:20
better go across to SE Start-ups :P
@Wil now where would the fun be in that? ;)
still, that's more snow that I got (about 2cm here)
Wil
Wil
If I need to read further back - sorry.... If you were to pay around 2k and go on a course - or pay £70, it doesn't matter... it will most likely not help you get a job... I don't mean to be rude or sound rubbish but they are almost pointless.
I have interviewed loads on a personal level and sometimes when taking on new clients (not really an interview - more like meeting here), and certification hardly ever comes up - they are much more interested in work history and other clients you have worked for... Certifications can mean the difference in a tie breaker with other people, but it certainly is meaningless on its own
It is horrible to try and break in... almost catch 22 (unless willing to start right at the bottom) - people don't want to employ you unless you have a track record of working for others... the best advise I or anyone can say is to try to socialise more... nearly all of my big contracts have come from friends of friends... do a good job and people remember and recommend you.
yeah networking can get you a long way
i'm well aware of the catch 22, not being able to get a job and expereince because I'm not expereinced enough. I do try to network but these things take time.
so I'm working as front-line support in a school doing password resets and printer cartridges, I've been asked to take care of the VLE so after 6 months they're placing some faith in me. What next though?
19:29
what's your formal education?
Connections are everything.
nil. well, basical level PC servicing courses, ICT users certficate from my apprenticeship
well you could simply as your superiors what your options for growth are
are there any senior spots that you could promote into and/or is there anything you can do to become eligible for such positions
he's fully aware of the need for growth and training and is more than happy to help but we moved into a new school in september and are still trying to get to grips with all the systems.
(off course I have no idea what kind of school it is)
19:34
it's a 800 pupil secondary, small team, me (junior technican) senior technician and my line manager (network manager)
no, no, I'm implying that they perhaps currently don't give you any sys admin tasks, because they don't know if you can perform these tasks
but if you make it clear you do want to learn these tasks
well, then they can help you learn it perhaps
I think my line manager is more than happy to let me at higher-level tasks but as we're getting used to the new system he wants control so if something goes wrong then he's liable.
very wise of him
although there is the what-happens-if-he-gets-hit-by-a-bus scenario...
hehe, planning to become a bus driver eh?
19:40
not round my parts :P
still the benefits of working in a school are two weeks off for christmas :P we'll be drawing up an action plan when we go back...and now I have the
results of a large forest fire to go clean up...thanks for the advice.
in minecraft, that is ;)
19:56
@Sathya, Do I need to change the multiplier too? What if I get error on only one core when running prime95, does that mean I can't use that fsb at all?
20:24
@FilipEkberg which processor ?
