only real difference is that on paid VPS they do the installation of OS for you

on VBox you install the OS yourself

the package management software will tell you exactly how much it will be downloading for each piece of software that you install

installing pure php56 was 4MB download (that is with any extensions)

installing the common extensions was 2MB more

.. but thing's like mysql will be eating a lot more of your bandwidth
