How much ram a person needs for "video" is IMO the wrong way to say it completely. How much ram you need is based on the Programs, any of them. most of the video programs i use, do not use big huge ammounts of ram, it processes videos as streaming style. Any programs that would pull the whole freaking video into ram, or any need to cache the whole video, could take lots of ram.
lol
@Psycogeek: there's programs that do that.
I am seeing that ffmpeg people are saying it does that? because most of the pro junk has done this stuff back when there was 2gig total, they certannly dont.
And any other programs of any sort, heck even browsers, it is not a class of work being done, it is more about How that work is being done, which actual program.
I would be in some deep poo with 300gig half compressed video files, if the programs ram requirement had anything to do with the file sizes.
@JourneymanGeek imagine how fast Skylake's GPU will be with high frequency DDR4 O_O

Then there is video Caches used for "real-time". where a specific buffer chunk is allocated via either the hardware driver, or via software allocation. Thos got somewhat obsoleted by the extreeme changes in speed of HD and cpu processing.
06:17
@allquixotic: and embedded ram
@Psycogeek: whatever we use at work does ;p
I would guess that at work your not making youtube videos :-)
not exactly
tho what we do often does make it into youtube eventually ;p
@allquixotic: heh, I'm not sure if I'll go with skylake yet
the program i am using now allows for only 512M video buffer thing to be locked out for when the multiple streams cannot keep up with the playing Plus the additional processing needed to do it real-time. Back before 64bit even allowed, they would set for about 2 gig .
current hardware's holding up well. Unless my c2d dies... ;p
but that's essentially going to mean a 90% new build
Because my system is "fast enough" for up to (i think) 3 streams of HD (not 4k) I have the buffering set to the lowest 128M so it takes way less time to start .
the early years of doing video were torturous, best available computer, hardware to do the decoding and encoding live, raid to keep the file data rate going, buffers to handle pre-loading and pre-processing, and still (slow) pre-render to do heavy work. A few years later the same resolution can be done on a Atom processor :-)
and to top it off everything was so buggy that saving every 5 minutes was a given.
06:37
@JourneymanGeek C2Ds never die. They just go MIA.
lol
@Bob: I essentially could have walked across the street and done that once ;p
also, they might be doing a high speed line across much of asia
singapore/KL seems semi likely
06:50
@MichaelFrank The system's only had... one and 2/3 GPU failures and a fan die so far
now why didnt they cut right down through iraq :-) would be faster
(2/3. current card is a GTS450, and for some reason the 2 digital outs are dead)

Ahhh i guess there are things i will never know , while leaning on reported "problems" to comprehend how the system has been rec-cinfigured, or what crasy stuff it does this time (and how to shut it off).
People were asking MS to "compress" ram like apple does. superuser.com/questions/952141/… But post re-write that is just to handle the Huge Allocation (and not use) hog programs .
( originally magicandre1981 answer just indicated MS doing "ram compression" ) which was more like WHAT?

@Psycogeek ...DIMM slots?
09:48
It actually threw me enough to check it out at wikipedia, because well "DIMM" thats where you toss a memory module , WTF the abreviation stands for never mattered much to me (dual in-line memory module) . and a DIN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_connector Which was pretty much any old round connector thing.
@Psycogeek When Smith told that humanity are cancer on this planet, he was right from consumer perspective. Is it coincidence bad things happen in China which is the biggest manufacturing country on this planet that helps cancer to spread? If we take simple analogy of parasite and body, eventually body learns its nature and annihilates it. If we take humanity and out planet then it will eventually shake us off like dog shakes off fleas. Do not crap on planet that feeds you.
DIN is also a german standards board ;p
I think McGyverism is the next coming thing but not fad because it will live forever as we become hopefully earth conscious.
@Boris_yo or if we just get that T-Rex cloned
I don't think spoiled consumers would have patience for McGyverism with their instant gratification.

"Ain't nobody got time for tha'!"
09:56
Or, (check it out) DIN en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_41612 other types of connections, Almost like other slots on the boards. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIN_72552 (many connecting automotive plug)
Do you know where something like this be gotten but made with quality? dx.com/p/…
@Boris_yo at every video sales location on the planet. I made one of these myself once, before they were actually in mass production. and MY big problem was the terrible spectrum on white leds. so in my contraption (as that was what it was by the time it was finished) I had Added red leds (most missing spectrum) and fill Cyan leds , missing even from RGB spectrums, and yellow leds for white balance, because filtering was loosing much of the light.
To improve efficency i would try and adjust the original LED light color as opposed to loosing so much when filtering.
Heard of Iblazr? iblazr.com
Most likely made in China but American design.
The usual designs of these are really much like a multi led flashlight. when good efficency again would have wide angle leds, and zoom angle leds, or lensing
@Psycogeek I have attachable wide lens I bought for Nexus 4.
10:08
@Boris_yo nice little addon, when for some stuff they just need more underdriven leds as opposed to 1 led usually overdriven and undercooled.
space gray aluminum... NASA aluminum... air industry aluminum...

Is that a good reason to inflate price?
If yes, I will make something out of unobtainium aluminum and charge 200% more for it...
the blazer 2 thing is utalising "warm" leds and "cool" leds which balances out the conflict of warm leds only output 1/2 the light, cool leds have rotten color. Problem still is warm leds while they have more yellow, actually have like zero red (no spectrum) still, compared to the sun, or an incan lighting.

Someone know (on Windows) how I could make a bootable iso from a DVD? I've been trying all the morning without success (tried BurnAware, MagicISO, WinISO, PowerISO)
I've managed to make an iso, but not bootable
@Boris_yo so if your not going to be portable, then avoid the led lighting and just abuse power, for pictures, and have real color. If you are portable, and still want pro color and not ghastly fleshtones , that require much makeup to counter. Then try and find the led stuff with very HIgh CRI . which exists, but still barely solutions the spectrum problem.
@Psycogeek So LED video lights are not good for taking product photography because of this?
10:20
@Boris_yo Dont forget I live under LEDs , all my flashlights are leds, my whole house is leds. so they are great and wonderfull. It just is there are huge flaws with represening colors properly (as the humans are attuned to being on earth). Because of that I still am not parting with my incan and zenon.
I wake up in the morning and view myself in the mirror with leds , and climb back into bed , because i am either sick or dead :-)
@Psycogeek Looks like iBlazr clone: banggood.com/…
@Boris_yo yes no warm leds there, in most situations that would be worse.
@Psycogeek But since my goal is not portrait photography - it's for DIY, macro closeups etc. then I think it does not matter to me.
dx.com/p/… i got one of these. and other RGB stuff, for color.
Making white with RGB brings with it 2 problems. the spectrum again is R G B very linear spikes , no total spectrum. but it works well with RBG light collection in cameras, and RGB display in monitors. second problem is it really is never white. it splotches about, and only loads of diffusion blend it together (close and wide shooting)
Human eyes adapt to screwed up color spectrums so easily, cameras are still very overly sensitive to color. Hence having a wrong color balance, or minor color changes to the human eye showing up as totally wacked out color on the camera.
Looks like I got my mod swag
But a RGB color adjustable lighting :-) and purposfull splotching, could also be like some cool photoshopping stuff.
@OliverSalzburg cool can we replace "gems from stach exchange" with minimaxir naughty strings

Q: Same hard drives, different capacities

Fate TraderI have two exactly same hard drives WD Reds 6TB, but they have slightly different capacities, is this normal or there are some bad sectors or something like that on them?

Partition table differences?
I'm seeing both capacity numbers come up in search, with no obvious differences.

Try the following PowerShell commands: (Get-PhysicalDisk)[1]."Size" and (Get-PhysicalDisk)[2]."Size". These will give the physical disk sizes for disks 1 and 2, respectively, as listed in Disk Management. (cc @qasdfdsaq) — DragonLord 2 mins ago
@HackToHell: that's pretty interesting. Could either mean AMD's current designs just happen to work so much better on DX12, or something odd in the benchmark ;p
also. Why the hell dosen't ars have a fury X? ._.
15:02
@JourneymanGeek not sure, but if DX12 uses GPU resources in a way similar to how Vulkan/Mantle uses them, which by all accounts it does, that workload has always been the ultimate "target" of what AMD is aiming for with their GPU design, and it's quite a different workload than DX11 and earlier.
Nvidia is still very much living in a world where their GPU design favors DX11 and earlier. Hence why they win on all the DX11 and earlier benchmarks.
@allquixotic: Not enough data for now
(and eh, I wouldn't mind if AMD gets a win. Competition is goood, even if I tend to go green ;p)
I'm really surprised they didn't test that with a R9 295X2 or Fury X... the 290X isn't even physically designed to compete with the 980 Ti; it's a previous gen chip
@allquixotic: apparently they can't get their hands on a fury X yet
Which is suprising
Ars is a pretty major tech site, even if they arn't as hardware oriented as they used to be
I'm holding out for the Fury X2. I think that's going to be an absolute beast of a card.
0_0
I wonder if that would be a full length card with watercooling ;p
I'm also curious about how multi card stuff works with DX 12.

but that's super vague
@allquixotic: yeah ;p
15:18
you folks on Win 10?
@Sathya: yup
how much memory does task manager say about 'System' consuming?
er
Not much ;p
The big issue is that CS education doesn't teach the actual application of skills in a real situation.
15:21
wondering if I'm running cross a leak or something
Programming isn't copy-pasting code. You have to learn the process of designing applications.
@Sathya Congratulations, you have a memory leak in a kernel driver. Or you're running an insider build with compressed memory...
@allquixotic not on insider builds yet..

A: Windows 10, 'System' process taking massive amounts of RAM

magicandre1981I've looked at xperf traces of several users and here the function ntoskrnl.exe!SmKmStoreHelperWorker of the Kernel starts to allocate memory. I discovered this on sysinternals. I've asked Microsoft about it and the answer is that this is by design. It is related to System Memory compression...

that might be useful
oh... is the compression store enabled on production Win10? I thought it was just in previews O_O
15:23
donno
Given a set of requirements, how do you write a program to do it? Programming is not just code. It's designing applications to meet requirements.
Didn't notice it on my laptop, and my desktop has waaaay too much ram for ,e to care ;p
I have 24 GB of RAM and System isn't using more than 50 MB.
I do think it's a leak
when I re/boot, it starts off with ~50ish
how much memory do you have in total?
15:26
8 gigs
the non paged pool isn't high, so dunno
@Bob, I had a similar leak months ago. Do you remember that? I had a screenshot of some crazy memory usage on Windows 8.1, and then it kinda fixed itself.

Bob
Bob
@allquixotic o.O
Different people have different ideas of 'trivial'.
@DragonLord The entire point of (at least my) CS program is to teach problem-solving and general conceptual knowledge. The student is expected to learn most of the application themselves, rather than being spoon-fed. (there is some basic starter stuff covered, but that's typically not explicitly examined)
@Sathya Check handle and GDI object usage in the details tab (enable more columns)
what does rammap say?
@Bob Here, we learn about programming constructs and then gradually shift towards real problem-solving in later courses. We have a software engineering class that teaches how real applications are made.
@Bob 1433 handles
That's what I would like to know "what does RamMap show" for some of these SU question win10 specific. and like does it work much the same way as it did in win7 as far as showing everything in ram.

Bob
That's not too bad.
(in the worst case I've seen severe handle leaks with >100k handles for a single process... that eats up kernel memory)
@Bob At a high level. We cover the process of defining project requirements, design, and the practical constraints (e.g. pick two of fast, good, and cheap).
We learn a bit of project management in that course.
RAMMap doesn't want to show anything, just says error refreshing database
It's not meant to be exhaustive. We didn't learn SCMs or bug tracking.

well, disabling superfetch brought it down to 600mb

So, last Wednesday, I bought a fish for my son (he's 4). Told him to be responsible for it, and if he stays alive for a few years, we'll talk about getting another pet (i.e. a dog). And the fish is dead after I left for work today :-/
next week hamsters
I'd like to know what actually happened though... Fed him this morning, and he came up to eat... Now he's floating sideways halfway up the tank
No, Clippy, you can't help with emotional questions
17:57
these small fishies can die just from transferring them to clorinated tap water of widely varying temperatures. Meaning just transferring them to a different bowl is a task.
expencive fishies like angel fish are some kind of expert fish item. guppies or polywogs-tadpoles were what I got as a kid.
When you spend $330 on a backpack, everything else just pales in comparison.
I just got my Osprey Meridian 22.
I'm very picky about my packs. I've gone through countless packs from high school to graduate studies.
At this point, with all these issues with the other packs I've used, I've decided to take the plunge on a super-high-end product.
> Buy nice or buy twice.
but if you did not start with a crappy product , how would you know good from bad?
Most packs I've used are made to a price point. Osprey packs are not.
Spending $60 for the third time on a High Sierra Freewheel was just getting annoying.
18:13
From what you carry, a AntiGravity pack would probably be better still.
...and I know Osprey stands behind every pack they make. If for any reason there's a functional defect or damage, just let them know and they'll repair or replace the pack. It's that simple.
@DragonLord Do they cost as much as an Osprey? :P
The Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey is an American multi-mission, tiltrotor military aircraft with both a vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), and short takeoff and landing (STOL) capability. It is designed to combine the functionality of a conventional helicopter with the long-range, high-speed cruise performance of a turboprop aircraft. The V-22 originated from the United States Department of Defense Joint-service Vertical take-off/landing Experimental (JVX) aircraft program started in 1981. The team of Bell Helicopter and Boeing Helicopters was awarded a development contract in 1983 for the tiltrotor...
It's the failures I've experienced with cheaper products (from office supplies to camera equipment) that I've taken on this mindset of not going cheap.

those things trigger my uncanny valley
18:27
@allquixotic I used to be able to trigger the uncanny valley in one of our software engineers by turning off "perspective view" in our 3D CAD package at work...
It literally hurt his brain to see everyday objects without some kind of perspective "depth" to them
@DragonLord What do you do to your backpacks that you need to replace them that often, and with something that expensive?
@Mokubai Just lots of use on rough terrain.
I'm a commuter student and I tend to wear out the wheels very fast.
@DragonLord I spent $10 on my backpack that I've been using for a few years.
Granted, I only use it to carry my stuff to work
I don't just carry a laptop and textbooks. I also have camera equipment and lots of other supplies that go with me every day to campus.
The camera equipment and a subset of supplies goes on my shoulder. The rest is in the wheeled backpack.
It's the sheer amount of equipment I travel with, and the amount of time I spend in transit, that makes finding a durable pack a challenge.
Wait, you carry so much stuff that you basically have a bag of luggage you drag around every day? o.O
Yeah, pretty much.
It's been like this for the last five years, ever since I started college.
I have very high demands for how I carry my stuff.
Ever since I got into photography, I've had the mindset of not leaving home without my camera.
I have lots of folders and papers I travel with as well, including large amounts of class presentations that are printed out for reference during class and study sessions.
The load only gets worse as the semester progresses.
19:24
Wheee. My Nook cover arrived.
Now only the nook to fill it
