@TomWijsman I just wrote a long-winded comment to a post of yours, but the question was deleted before I was done...
I think the asker got confused about which drive was causing their problem
@sblair > I made a mistake in identifying the drive. It is actually my magnetic drive that seems to be slow (!). Deleting.
That's his last comment.
ahh. anyway, no big deal, but I wanted to defend the longevity of SSDs
or, at least, why they seem to fail
Jeff Atwood's recent SSD blog post doesn't describe SSD failures due to exhausting all flash p/e cycles, but due to the controller hardware or software failing.
well, that's far more likely to be reason because, even for best case mentioned in the post, you would need an average write speed of about 21MB/s for about a year to wear out the drive
@sblair Do you have a quote? Because that blog post does not even mention the word controller.
The average case of hitting the write limit on a SSD is around 20 years or so, the best case can be calculated by (SIZE OF SSD) * (Endurance Cycles) = Total data written to SSD before failure.
But when you're doing a ton of small writes, be sure that your SSD is going to be near the worst case scenario...
@sblair Not necessarily, please note that reported write speed != actual write speed given that the writes are not always as big as the blocks.
00:54
@TomWijsman here's a spreadsheet I made earlier to convince myself :p
I've assumed 10,000 p/e cycles per flash cell, and a write amplification of 1.0
Also, that's total failure, you can shave of quite a few procents because a SSD where there's only a few writeable GB left is worthless...
that's true, and the small writes you mention will hurt the write amplification
but it depends on TRIM support
Yeah, I know. Wrote about it a while ago...

An SSD drive is a precious investment, you don’t want your SSD to fail, do you?

So it is interesting to try to do things to increase it’s lifetime and see if it’s worth it. This is exactly what one of our fellow Super Users was planning to do, this user called caveman asked

So, he only installed about 40 GB of data but there is already 52.1 GB written?

He found why this happens in a post which explains:

Which means that the formula

is only for the best case scenario which would allow you to write 1,000 to 1,000,000 times the data of the drive before failure. But, looking at the av …

Should probably revise/adapt some information there. Especially the page file section since I recently discovered that disabling a page file can decrease performance and even make your system unstable.
Left a bunch of comments around the site for that:
Hmm, why do I only see now that I started that post with An instead of A...
Probably wanted to type something else there first.
actually I'd read it as ess-ess-dee, so "an" reads fine to me
I should reboot in Windows 7 and get to check at how many writes I'm currently at...
Dunno if Windows 8 DP will support the Intel tool.
Or if it can probably do the optimization given that I'm running of a VHD.
Hmm, that reminds me that I haven't done that for quite a while. o_O
And hmm... We really need to revive the Super User blog somehow.
01:07
Well I'm at 2.43TB after about two years
Oh...
Intel SSD Toolbox v3 - 10/27/2011
Seems there is a new version, gonna check it out and hope it installs on Windows 8 DP.
Whoa, that's a weird error...

So, I'm supposed to add that after this? :O
that error dialog box stinks of hideous Java GUIs
Yup, adding -i Gui to that very long command line (found with Process Explorer) works.
Yeah, the blue buttons alone are horror.
Hmm, using black and dark gray on a dark blue gradient, good job Intel. :(
It's taking long to install Uninstall 2.0. xD
I wouldn't be surprised if the SSD controller would actually fail because of this toolbox.
It's like the badly designed Intel Turbo Memory back then...
@sblair: Wait a moment, the Drive Details got so long. About every detail of the drive is included there, never seen such outlined S.M.A.R.T. table...
Oh wait, that's not the S.M.A.R.T. table, it was another button hidden somewhere.
@sblair: 2.62TB
01:24
@TomWijsman show-off :p
903 hours powered on, 1397 power cycles, 164 unsafe shutdowns (yeah, my laptop has crashed quite a lot)
@sblair Well, I remember it being 1.73TB over a year ago. So making the Junction points seems to have worked well...
If I used it instead of my HDD, I think it would be a a lot more TB.
9530 start/stop count on the HDD, 12216 power on hours, 4526 cycles, 2084 unsafe shutdowns
@TomWijsman were you doing some extreme overclocking tests to get that crazy unsafe shutdown count?
@sblair: Nope, my laptop loves to reboot once a day. Mostly when it ran for a long time while I watch a YouTube video or something...
I think it's something VRAM related. Already run two tests (they take 15 - 20 minutes each), but I should try to let longer tests run when I don't need to access my laptop.
It does run FurMark + multiple Prime95 instances + HDTune simultaneously fine for at least a hour, so it's not temperature...
Gonna check if the PC became a bit snappier after installing latest drivers and clicking that optimize button. Rebooting...

2 hours later…
04:09
Also, did two hours of StarCraft II or so, it's still working. Pretty weird crash cause I'll probably never figure out...
Got it as minimum as possible though.

Getting the footprint error again getting stuff from asp.net!
Damn... Opened it in Firefox like suggested here, and the download worked, went back to Chrome and it worked as well... so still not sure on the error!

08:28
morning all
hah, nice, I seem to have a bronze tag badge on MSO
@DMA57361 neat-o
:/ only 2 weeks until my last day at this job
hm
Apparently since my laptop is under six months old, i'm 'only' out 250 dollars for the broken USB port
@JourneymanGeek I've missed all the preceding conversations, but that doesn't sound good :S
@DMA57361: original quote was 950 dollars. Its under six months old so its under insurance
I will be posting a fairly detailed bitchfest on google plus - the powered USB ports tongue snapped off, and IBM and Lenovo have basically been bouncing me around for the last two weeks
08:38
oh lovely
wait... under insurance? do you not get warranties or similar out there?
they claim its not covered under warranty
gah idiots
08:56
And they e mailed me a copy of the warranty
yanno, cause i obviously didn't read it, since i was consistantly insisting it was poor workmanship, and found other examples of the USB port snapping off on the same series, and model
so you're emailing it back with several relevant causes highlighted for them in case they haven't bothered to read it?
09:14
yes
but they insist its 'misuse'
but you've managed to find instances of other people having the same problem?
yup. they are still playing the same old tune
it's always an uphill struggle :(
eh, its going nowhere
I have no idea how the hell they seem to have decided that the USB port broke due to misuse from two photos...
09:29
@JourneymanGeek I would refuse to pay, send email to the most senior people you can... you never know what will happen
@WilliamHilsum: been escalated a fair bit. I'll be posting a link on google plus on the whole ... saga
@JourneymanGeek Was this the laptop you got from your dads company or similar?
yawns
@JourneymanGeek That is nothing new at all - nearly all connectors are made by one company - foxconn, and many are bad - it shouldn't need a new board or anything - it is a 5 minute solder job (after the few minutes of opening the laptop, laying it out etc.)... it is a disgrace they are charging you that much - but - I have seen that happen very often, on desktops and laptops... all it takes is either a tiny less (glue?) material on their socket, or a connector that is a fraction to tight and it rips
the inside of the socket out
@JourneymanGeek I was going to say to try and complain to the place of purchase, but, don't recommend that if it is your family!
09:40
Humm...where are rollbacks/edits listed in the profile? I go to the "activity" tab but I'm not sure. Only did one for the first time yesterday but can't find it...
@tombull89 edits are "revised" on the activity tab
if the question or answer is deleted it won't show up thou, so that's a possible cause
oh wait
it's this post, but I found that via your new CleanUp badge, the event itself seems to be missing :/
hmmm, I'm not sure rollbacks are on anyone's profile, I think there may be a bug @tombull89 (or I'm not looking hard enough)
@DMA57361 Yeah, that's the one I was looking for.
Bit of self-vandalism by the poster, just wanted to check on it.
I'll MSO-it.
@tombull89 thanks :)
@WilliamHilsum: i've taken to using a USB hub that i know is a little loose to prevent any more damage. none of the USB plugs i use seem non standard, other than the ones on the blackwidow (which always goes through the hub), and possibly the USB 3.0 cable in question, but it dosen't feel any tighter than a regular one
off to school... back when i reach there, if i'm early ;)
Fair enough - was probably just not enough glue or whatever they put it in with... I have had it before a few times... There was a whole wave of them last year... I noticed that the USB sockets built on to cases kept failing
@JourneymanGeek have fun! bye
09:55
@WilliamHilsum: its definately broken off, and its plastic failure rather than glue
and really gone
@DMA57361 Well, I found this one...from July 2009 :/

Q: Should rollbacks be included in a user's recent activity history?

GEOCHETWhy are rollbacks not included in a user's recent activity history? When you go to a user's profile and click on recent, why can you not see where they have rolled back posts? Isn't this just as relevant as the edits it shows? Example: http://stackoverflow.com/users/383?tab=recent#sort-to...

@tombull89 O_o
so, to revive or repost and hope no one notices?
I could post a new one...but it would probably be closed as dupe...even though there's no definitve answer to that /\ /\ one.
I'll go for a new one.
I don't suppose anyone here knows MVC Ajax? I've been trying for ages now and completely fed up... but... I feel like I have asked far too many questions on this on SO :/
Well...it's away...
0
Q: Include rollbacks in recent history

tombull89Yesterday I rolled back this answer and, as it was my first rollback, got the "cleanup badge" and all was well in the world. However, when I go to my "activity" tab I can't find any trace of the rollback, only the fact I got the badge. Is a rollback not an action that needs to be logged/easily f...

Too busy to talk :(
Just had a half hour talk to the company providing my hosting... customer service enquiry... I think I spent pretty much the whole time telling him how bad I think their service is :/ he wasn't expecting that... Once you get talking, it is hard to stay quiet! Got my frustrations out!
@WilliamHilsum nothing like a nice long telephone rant to clear the air... or something :/
12:59
@DMA57361 well, I certainly feel better about it! Doubt anything will get done... but.. every time I speak to them, I want to say it, but, never have the balls to! They just said "what do you think about x" and I just said "Complete load of rubbish"... He wasn't expecting it!
lol, direct then
FINALLY GOT THE AJAX THING TO WORK!!!!!
Only taken me around 6 hours!!!

5 hours later…
17:37
The answer I gave here - superuser.com/questions/351790/… - is still getting upvotes days after... How is it getting attention? :/ I don't understand how people are seeing it

A: Question of the Week #33

slhckI found this one quite interesting: Why is there so much hype about Virtualization these days? Virtual machine, Virtual server, Virtual disk, etc...... It doesn't make much sense to me why someone would want to make their things "virtual" when basically that adds another layer to ev...

Ahh, thanks, didn't see that - cool
@WilliamHilsum I voted for it... It was a great answer
Yup!
RQ: Why do customers think their issues are the most critical?
17:53
@Luke Cool...
@Luke hehe... because they are customers, they wouldn't be using you if they could do it themselves..
not entirely true, they're maybe just lazy @Wil
:P
how many times a week do I have to fix a typo in a CMS, just because some people are too lazy to search for the e-mail I sent them containing their credentials
I think I annoyed a support guy!
@slhck Good point!
haha
18:09
Nice
But seriously... I work in a tech shop, and peopel drop of their computers and expect them to be done in 20 minutes... I really wish that was justifiable murder :P
lol, get back to work and stop chatting here!
I am working
I'm waiting on 2 virus scans, a CHKDSK, and a Windows Vista install
haha
common excuses :P
I love XKCD... Lol
18:53
Virus scans are outdated.
Use Autoruns to prevent them to load and then install a virus scanner, it will take care of the rest at home.
Windows installs can be done unattended. 20 minutes is reasonable for these cases...
@TomWijsman They can be... But we still virus scan cause they also tend to get registry entries that affect other things. Plus we can then say how many viruses they had, as almost every customer wants to know
@Luke They can see that at home, no need to waste your item. The registry entries are wiped at home...
Huh?
How will it get taken care of at home?
By a scheduled virus scan?
Then I'd be left explaining why shutting down startup programs was worth $65 :P
19:02
No, you have to explain in work hours.
And you sold them an upgrade to their current license or even a new virus scanner.
And if they don't agree with your work you can simply turn the check boxes back on in under a half minute and return it back to them...
Or have them pay more to run an actual virus scan because they are too lazy to do it back at home.
I'm just saying, virus scans can easily be scheduled to run at home so you can provide them faster service...
And actually explain how the scan/update/license works of the virus scanner.
Your $65 was used to "click scan now in the virus scanner and waste your valuable time" VS "actually work on disabling the viruses; configuring the virus scanner to properly run; explaining where to click to scan/update and when the license runs out"
On the other hand, you can implement a standard policy to have them come back half a day later. Or tell them that you call when it involves troubleshooting/repair. It is quite necessary if you have a busy business, then fast service isn't possible anymore because you have computers to work through...
Kind of depends on computer store size / workers / place / ...
12
A: What to do while compiling?

Tom WijsmanMulti-tasking is deemed bad; so indeed, stay coding... Figure out how to make your code compile faster, a very interesting thing to look into. Figure out how to need less edit/complie cycles; defensive programming can help you avoid bugs. Use Test Driven Development, so that you need to compile...

@TomWijsman Haha.. actually, my code compiles fast enough :)
There are a lot of other productivity things I could do better though
Even I have #1 rep there, my productivity is bad...
Kind of like: Delaying stuff and eventually still do the stuff in time.
19:18
I thought that was hilarious

Q: Where do I find the Control+Up key on my Sony Vaio computer?

jesseOn a Sony Vaio, I can't find a "Control + Up key" required for moving an online task. Where do I find it?

Someone should make an animated gif that zooms in from a large distance to the Control key. Then moves up, moves to the up key, moves down again.
And show how they are pressed...
That is... wow
I like how big the images are
If you need Ctrl + Esc sometime...
19:22
@TomWijsman productivity.stackexchange.com/q/274 Having multiple monitors, I end up using only one … So it's a huge productivity loss for me
Only have one here too... :(
I've only got one :/
Need to mount one right above my laptop screen in my room.
I'm thinking about getting the same size as my laptop...
Would be more cheap.
Or I could go for a big one and get more on it.
But then the widths of both don't fit. xD
hmm
yeah, laptop + big monitor = no good
Or, I get one where the height is equal to the width of my laptop screen, then rotate it 90°. xD
19:23
you could just use a big screen and use the laptop in clamshell mode
haha
I always wanted to try that
I type on my laptop keyboard though...
but my monitor is so cheap that it doesn't allow rotation
no spare keyboard around?
Yes, a gaming keyboard but I'm no longer used to that way of typing.
you like the notebook keys better?
Well my laptops resolution is 1366x768... Monitor that size can't be very big :/
19:25
@slhck Yes, I do.
@TomWijsman Same here, actually.
I've noticed some days ago that my laptops doesn't always boot when it's hold upside down...
Perhaps a loose contact related to my crashes.
haha, funny condition
Should test if the condition is still there and turn it into a Super User question.
describe it funny enough and it gets a gazillion upvotes
19:31
Why doesn't my laptop boot upside down?

![picture of me holding the laptop upside down in front of my face with a Super User Tshirt or Hoodie with a screen that stays black](imgURL)
Hmm, the words got out of order. xD
hahaha
don't forget a huge frowny face
Hmm, what is a work where you have to work upside down?
being an astronaut
painting frescoes
19:33
Why doesn't my laptop boot in SPAAAAAAACEEEEEEEEEEE?
hahahaha
"why doesn't my laptop work while I'm painting a fresco?"
upsidedownnyanlaptop.gif
I wonder whether my laptop stops working when I turn it upside down, could try it...
Then make a video of it where I place it in front of a mirror and then turn the laptop upside down.
:D
Sadly it can't record itself during boot.

I just made him a keyboard (in Paint, sadly)

You guys can help a bit? I posted a new question, but I'm afraid it'll be closed. Any idea how to ask the question? I just want to... stream a single file with some control on the remote PC. ( superuser.com/questions/353718/… )

We here at Stack Exchange love our blogs. Blogs! The way our users can have all that fun that we don’t allow here. Not to mention that Jeff and Joel, and CHAOS all blog regularly.

We’ve noticed that our site-specific blogs have some amazing content that just isn’t getting the attention it deserves. Maybe some of you don’t know that we have a Theoretical Computer Science blog, or a Gaming blog. Which is why we’re going to give them a bit of a bump and showcase some of our favorite entries from Blog Overflow. …

Our blog has fallen so low that we're not even part of that anymore...
Yup, we need people to write more. Or more people to write, actually.
More people to write, really.
Were suffering at the mercy of burn out and school :/
The reason I don't write much anymore is because I spent too much time in a post.
20:44
How can even one post a blog entry to any Stackexchange site's blog?
And I don't see much value in short / small posts...
@Shiki Just write it!
@Shiki: Contact a moderator or a blog editor.
@Diago Incorrect :P @Shiki blog.superuser.com/contribute
20:45
Oooh thanks!
We've been over this anyway … having to use Wordpress for the blog is another barrier
you can't even log into Wordpress with the same credentials because they won't be bothered to write an auth plugin
So we can blame it on the higher ups?
Hmm, that would indeed facilitate writers.
Do we actually have a feature request for such auth plugin?
Nathan asked them, but Rebecca said it wasn't an option
unless somebody really wants to do it
but they have better things to do
Supporting their own initiatives isn't something worth doing? :/
20:48
Well... It kind of dependes whether other blogs would burn out...
@TomWijsman I've actually summarized it here: bit.ly/ukRWZK
@slhck If we could do something like that... we'd have tons of blogs.
@slhck Awesome site.
Well, integrating it into the system is indeed another option...
It'd be so much easier, and if you get rep, that's an incentive for people to write
rep to write... yeah! That's awesome!
@slhck You should shoot that post over to MSO

@SimonSheehan Yeah, I'll just submit it
let's see what people think of it

ah, okay @SimonSheehan :P I never earn rep anywhere these days, I just moderate. :P
@studiohack Haha... Only reason I want rep is to earn those powers!

@slhck well diago left.. And SU is troublesome sometimes ;) you never know.

What, Diago left? I thought he was quite active again?
He resigned just yesterday! Also not leaving for a few more minutes it seems :p

how would these even be useful for others?
