1 hour later…
1:35 AM
@JourneymanGeek @Mokubai bought GTX 960. 10/10 :D
Very pleased, resolved a LOT of issues

@SimonSheehan do want. :(

@MichaelFrank Was around 250 taxes in at the local PC shop! Not bad at all
Uses much less power than my old card too
With a ton more performance

@SimonSheehan: heh, considering that for my next upgrade, especially if the 4gb varient is cheap/good
(since I do want to go 4K, and the vram's actually useful there)

So this is something I should put on my list?

/me has a lot of upgrades in the pipeline. ;p
Maybe?

1:38 AM
@JourneymanGeek 4GB variant was i think 50-100 more... This one does support 4k though
@OliverSalzburg For a mid-range card, I'd say so

@SimonSheehan: Yeah. I'll probably get a new monitor first then see ;p

:D I'd love a 4k monitor..

I have a GTX 580 right now

/me is off on savings projections a month cause of a impulse purchase ;p

1:39 AM
So, the other number is bigger!
I must purchase it!

hahahah i like your logic

and when my brother moves out, I have better PAF

@OliverSalzburg: How's the speakers? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Pretty cool. But, right now, I'm using headphones

1:40 AM
Ahh

@OliverSalzburg Ha, I have a 560 at the moment. :<

I was playing Black Mesa before and actually took out the headphone for the first time in months

/me ended up not getting them cause they arn't available here. At All.

But to be honest, I hardly ever play PC games now.

560 TI was a pretty solid card

1:40 AM
I don't really have the time :/

@OliverSalzburg is it any good?

@OliverSalzburg oh, how good is the music in BM?

I have limited time, but i do like it for stress relief

I tried to play the witcher over the weekend but it crashed.

@MichaelFrank I played Black Mesa today and, without headphones, my GFX card is just too distracting. Loud fan noises,,,

1:41 AM
Right at the first fight.

@SimonSheehan @MichaelFrank It is awesome. I played through the mod when it came out and the EAP is even better. If you liked anything from Half-Life before, you'll love this EAP version

@OliverSalzburg sweet, i'll give it a shot. I played it a few years back when they were doing testing... never thought it would come out haha
They certainly did it in "valve time"

@OliverSalzburg Wha...? EAP? Is there a newer version thank BM:Source?

Yeah, well, for me, Black Mesa almost compares to Duke Nukem Forever, which was a disappointment. But Black Mesa is just amazing. They really did everything right IMHO
@MichaelFrank Yeah, it came out like yesterday

1:43 AM
Duke nukem was AWFUL

> /me

@OliverSalzburg Oooh wow. Okay.

What does this mean?

In this new version.. the moment you step into that hazard suit... awesome

/me does something.

1:44 AM
@DragonLord Its basically the same as putting something in *
Like uninstalls the game
Or something

In IRC it'll display like "Michael does something."

But on here that does italics. IRC and skype are different

Huh

its an action

It's more like an emote.
like /slap in IRC.

1:47 AM
I took some screenshots on my new playthrough: steamcommunity.com/id/gencha/screenshots/…

@OliverSalzburg :( Hits the work proxy block page.

I really loved this scene
Playing that is really like it was 1998 again

Gonna have to wait for payday to grab it

I had a friend with the HL:Platinum box way back at school. This was pretty much all we played when we were at his house.
I remember we played so much Wanted!.

@DragonLord: It means get off my lawn ;p
(/me <text>is an action on irc. It prints $user <text> on IRC. SOME of my systems have scripts that do italics when I do that on SE chat. )

1:57 AM
Never played Half-Life Classic.
Should I look into it?
Should I play HL1 before taking up Black Mesa?

Well, its the same game
Just rebuilt on the new engine
Instead of the best of 1999 ;)

Did they finish it?

My understanding is that Black Mesa is a reimagining of the original Half-Life, with some modifications to modernize the gameplay.

@DragonLord Correct

1:59 AM
@JourneymanGeek It's Early Access. The game is feature-complete but may have bugs. It's effectively in open beta.

I recommend you play the first one, why not. Its a classic.

If you haven't played Half-Life "back then", then it won't have the same effect on you, I guess. But I assume that it's still a great game as it is
You could play the original and then compare it later, but you wont have the remembrance moment a remake like that can invoke
So, basically, you would play through a game with ugly graphics only to have the story spoiled

As a shooter it's very simplistic. It's the puzzles and level design that's the cool part.

As @SimonSheehan says, it's a great game, but it's like watching a screener and then later watching the BD-Rip

^ valid

2:02 AM
So you're saying it's redundant?

@DragonLord I personally don't believe that your experience will be improved by playing the original before the remake
Afterwards, yes

Does Black Mesa provide the Source SDK?

@DragonLord No, but it's free to download with Steam
But note that the EAP version is an improvement over the free mod
The former should bring the dependency, the later probably doesn't
Spend those 20 bucks! :D

early access program
Programme? I can never remember...

2:17 AM
I see

@OliverSalzburg I really liked, rephrase that, i never got really ticked off at half life :-) they managed to blend puzzel, story, shooter, together , plus ease of control, stealth, limited bugs, and did not act like (although i was) a fully linear world. Plus they gave me enough ammo :-)
The ammo thing I still do not quite understand how that works. IF they are trying to scare the crap out of you, then they only provide enough ammo to make 80% headshots. How am i going to be Scared AND be a perfect shot at the same time?
Truely scared is when you unload 2 clips on a shadow of a door that opens up :-)

@Psycogeek Depends on the difficulty you played on.
But really, the only scary bits were sudden headcrab attacks. :P

2:33 AM
Scared is when your flailing bullets around , when (you said it) when a headcrab has latched onto your face.
And BulletSwarms , endless bullet spraying mindlessly is just as bad , being the opposite of that.
Scared is when you put 1 clip into the person who was trying to help you :-) OOps Sorry about that chief.
When they completly short me on ammo, I instead become a most calm player, you cannot scare me anymore because every shot must be meticulously placed.

Yea, but they also give you the best crowbar in the world incase you decide not to pussy out and go manmode on the game. :D

2:50 AM
Luckily in half-life you could actually kill a monster with that.
In resident evil 6 you could unload a whole clip into a dude and he finnnly falls down becuse you just cant walk with that much lead holding you down:-)
I was playing single player with the Partner AI (totally out of ammo with 6 guns), I keep pushing the "go get em" button, and even the AI would say "no way", "uh uh" , "not going there" , "not right now"

1 hour later…

@JourneymanGeek The Amazon stuff just arrived

Gods, ongoing spam...

@DragonLord Always.

A question which ends with multiple right angle brackets followed by a link from a new user with less than 10 reputation should be rejected.

that spammer that tagged thier stuff ? 5 seconds after you make code to nuke em, you figure they will change thier Mo ?
But yea, there is specific text that one prevelent spammer is using, that a machine could nuke.

Q: How do I upload a single file to a empty device?

Sammy WestI'm trying to get a single file to play on my raspberry pi. I am attempting to tinker with High Level Assembly, and C, and have gotten them to compile properly. I'm just having trouble actually getting them onto the device its self. I have a feeling that there is a way to do it like the Arduino, ...

better pic.

@Sathya too much whitespace :P

@Bob: I THINK the kindle arrived

Bob
6:16 AM
@JourneymanGeek just picked up a uni pin and some supposedly smear resistant sharpie fineliners
0.5 and 0.4mm respectively
Considered the 0.3 and 0.4 uni but they were a tad scratchy
And I don't need that fine anyway

Do they work on excessively glossy paper?

Bob
Will try when I get home

youtu.be/eN4XICOyRb8?t=1425 This is why you dont unleash your grandparents on the web, and not tell them how much BS is on the web.

I see Snowden is now looking for more money to talk about the Aliens , , , The what? lets see you spend months revealing what we already know, that there are spies, and that the patriot act not only gave the goverment unlimited peek&Seek, but it was not "news" at that moment that there were aliens in collusion with the government :-) Smatter running out of appearances money .
Oh yea sorry i forgot about the proof of aliens, but i am available for interviews.

Q: Do Epson inkjet printers actually use up the ink before claiming "out in ink"?

RockPaperLizardDo Epson inkjet printers consider themselves "out of ink" after a predefined number of pages, or after the ink actually runs outs (or comes close)? Some people claim it's a predetermined number of pages. Thus if your pages just have a little text on them, the printer will claim it is out of ink...

Manufacturers have been sued in the past for lying about whether the cartridge is empty.
That includes Epson and HP.
My WorkForce WF-3540 has proven to be honest when it comes to ink levels and will not declare empty unless the cartridge is genuinely empty.

@DragonLord: On the other hand, its easier to assume a printer will print N pages and report that, rather than constantly monitoring ink volume
To be safe, empty would be N-(some number)

Bob
It's better to report assumed volume but allow continued usage as long as the user wants
Refusing to print is a no-no

6:44 AM
@Bob: Some printers do that. Only that that voids your warranty

Bob
7:07 AM
@JourneymanGeek Considering the print heads are on the cartridge, if that damages the printer then the printer is defective by design.

@Bob: ;p
I mean literally, they make you hit ok 3-4 times ;p

Bob
(Obviously I'm referring to the cheap printers where that is the case - the separate ink tank printers are a different matter and can legitimately refuse to print.)

Its the latter

Bob
Found Adobe Acrobat XI at the store today.
Standard costs >$450. Pro costs $97.

Bob
7:11 AM
(Turns out, the Pro was actually the education version, but they misstocked the shelf...)
@JourneymanGeek Uni Pin smudges everywhere.
Might be the worst I've tried yet o.O

You're still a student, right?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Ya.
Enough of one to qualify for these nifty discounts :P
(but I'm subscribed to CC anyway so I don't really care about Acrobat standalone)
Ugh. "Smudge-resistant" sharpie smudges
Hm... maybe not a fair test.. lemme try somewhere else
I think the Uni Pin left some solvent behind
Nope, still smudges
...taht was rather disappointing
I think I'll stick with the Bic Mark-It

7:29 AM
;p

Bob
oh, there was also a video playing on how to pick monitors (physical size, resolution, connectors)... it was pretty good, actually
I like that store :P

you mean a real store? no shipping and handling problems?

Bob
@Psycogeek real store (officeworks - went there to get the pens)

8:45 AM
;p
blah. I should have brought some spare bandaids. Got a patch on my foot that got hurt, and its not happy.

Bob

@JourneymanGeek ...brought?
oh, at work?

@Bob: Yeah

Bob
I guess it's time to pop down to the local <place you buy bandages>?

I'm a working dog, earning my kibble and all that ;p

Bob
I normally keep a couple in my wallet

(got a package at home ;p)

Bob
these amazonbasics neoprene cases are pretty nice
the 'frustration free packaging' was pretty annoying though :P
@JourneymanGeek wallet? :P

@Bob: No idea. Suprisingly no one opened it
Mom said something about there being something about lithium batteries on the box so... might be the kindle.
The other package dosen't seem to have left HK yet

Bob
10:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek or maybe you have a battery-powered wallet? :P

I doubt. ;p
Its supposedly RF shielding. Which amusingly is going to be troublesome

Bob
@JourneymanGeek ?

I use a contactless farecard that's inside my wallet. Which of course means I can't just tap my wallet at the faregatething any more.

Bob
Ah.
We recently switched to a similar system.
Of course, the whole tap-your-wallet thing is entirely useless to me.
I have, what, four NFC cards in my wallet...
it just errors out telling me to use one card at a time -_-

lol. We're on the second generation of those. And I have one card

Bob
10:13 AM
@JourneymanGeek Second generation?

Yeah, we had another contactless card system before.

10:27 AM
There are at least 2 "future" sci-fi flicks from long before these cards existed, that portrayed the government using a ID and payment cards of this type to track the location of all the humans.
In at least one, the people were trying to run from the goverment, and were being picked up at every kiosk and turnstile , and vending machine , etc. as if all the machines would then be imbuded with this ability, then transfered to central government agencies.
now we know That will never happen :-)

I mean. I will have to take my card out of my wallet

the RFID theft deterrant systems must be able to work about 6Feet away, but not through tin hats and mylar.
makes you wonder when the crooks are ever going to get actually smart :-) and defeat such systems.
i thought it was pretty revealing to see criminals (on video) using car remote scanners to hop right into cars. I knew they can scan my garage door in seconds to open it up.
Luckily around here they just dont do that stuff, even for jokes. Cause it would be really funny everyone comming home to thier garage doors all open down the whole street.

10:47 AM
(I didn't get it cause it was RFID proof. I got it cause It looked cool ;p)

Cant pick up a dog from the shelter around here, without it being chipped.
Chipped pets is a great idea, but i am not doing mine, because of FOD (forign object damage) the possibility that as a foreign object they cannot mask it from being rejected by the immune system, and causing that problem.
If it works out really well in pets, with no rejection, then it should be easy enough to apply to humans, Like always it can start out with a different premise and scare tacktics. To keep your child from being kidnapped, and so the schools can keep track of them, etc. Which of course will include to keep your child from being enslaved by terrorist sex slave ganstas.. then eventually everyone will grow up with one implanted like animals

Never heard of that happening.

11:03 AM
Yea have not seen a single report of big festering infections around them :-) increased white blood counts, and compromised immune systems. It certannly would happen to humans if it is not coated in some specialty materials.
Then the idea that humans will have the body fighting such things for ages longer than pets would.

Like also depicted in these Sci-fi flicks, back alley ID removal
I think most people are all OK with most of this stuff, but they forget what percentage of years each of these countries spends in "war" times, and how such methods would be applied in a wartime situation or even simple occupations.
although i am sure we can get some conspircy nuts , freaking out about how the aliens will use it :-)

11:22 AM
@Psycogeek What? Why? There is little difference between the immune systems of dogs and humans. Both are quite capable of rejecting foreign bodies and both do, and will. If the animals can accept the chips, then the chips have been specifically designed to circumvent the immune response.

some human implantation methods require drugs that dampen or stop the immune system altogether, so if they have the mateirals worked out, they must not apply to everything? like hip replacements.
On the other hand they are growing skin right on some of the stuff they wedge into humans, like for facial reconstructions. But do we know all the possible problems from that fully? or can some of it be sorta hidden, between just didnt work as planned and anti-rejection drugs.
They do it like patching a plaster hole in your walls :-)
there are thousands of sick failures of FOD in humans, most of them from the lesser surgeons, cross country surgeries (tits & ass) and many totally fudged up faces from spastic surgery.
Pictures to ghastly to post. but interesting to see :-)

@terdon heh. I couldn't even be bothered to argue.

11:51 AM
@Psycogeek Um, yes, but what makes you think it is any different in animals?

12:02 PM
@terdon I do not know? forced chipping has not been around for that long, and the chips are made by many different companies.
because it is small and simple they could be coated with a single well known substance that is already known to have least rejection problems.

12:19 PM
@Psycogeek Yes, exactly. And the same would apply to humans. Or pretty much any mammal. Fruitflies even. The basics of the immune system are universal.

I know my body rejects stuff :-) they used fishing line (type) stiching in my finger, months later pop another end of it comes out of my finger, i pull it out a month later another one pops up, all crimpled up under the skin, like the body had some way of not just attacking it, but "working" it out.
3 rounds of that later, with FOD comming out of my finger, it is 99.9% the same as the finger that did not get sliced up.

12:39 PM
@Bob: Its the kindle ;p

Bob
@JourneymanGeek So, how is it? :P

I like it ;p
Its slightly easier for me to read than a real book :/

Bob
o.O
I actually prefer a real book... really not a fan of the page-turning.

12:57 PM
@Bob: Usually yes
But... big print helps me a lot.

do we get to see pictures?

1:09 PM
Eventually ;p

1:20 PM
show it playing a HD movie :-)

In Word VBA, I am going to write a macro to convert a number to currency format. I am a beginner at this programming stuff, and no formal training or study. I would like to check my strategy with someone.
To take numbers like 1005.1
I would guess a reasonable approach would be to first add decimals for the cases (1005, 1005.1 and 1005.15), then add commas for numbers longer than 3. Finally, I'll append a "$" to the front. Is this a reasonable approach?

Bob
@BradyTrainor Seems risky with questionable benefit.
How can you be sure all numbers in a document represent currency?

@BradyTrainor java2s.com/Code/VBA-Excel-Access-Word/Data-Type/… - don't do it manually - use the Format function
I'll leave it up to you to correctly detect the right locations to replace ordinary numbers with currency :)

@Bob it's only for a specific range.
aha

don't worry about the numerical calculation of dblPayment = Pmt(dblRate / 12, intTerm * 12, -dblPrincipal) in that code sample; focus on the fact that you've got a number as input and you want it formatted
the real magic is Format(dblPayment, strFormat) having previously declared strFormat as listed
but you'll need to use CDbl(whateverString) to convert your Range.Text (String) to a double, first

yes, agreed, i'm testing that magic momentarily.
hmm, 123 -> $123.
maybe if I multiply by 1.00 or something first
well, at least that handles the commas and dollar sign, so my life is easier so far.

3:08 PM
@BradyTrainor No. Do not guess. Research.
> (#)

Digit placeholder. Display a digit or nothing. If the expression has a digit in the position where the # appears in the format string, display it; otherwise, display nothing in that position.

This symbol works like the 0 digit placeholder, except that leading and trailing zeros aren't displayed if the number has the same or fewer digits than there are # characters on either side of the decimal separator in the format expression.
> (0)

Digit placeholder. Display a digit or a zero. If the expression has a digit in the position where the 0 appears in the format string, display it; otherwise, display a zero in that position.

If the number has fewer digits than there are zeros (on either side of the decimal) in the format expression, display leading or trailing zeros. If the number has more digits to the right of the decimal separator than there are zeros to the right of the decimal separator in the format expression, round the number to as many decimal places as there are zeros. If the number has more digits to the
So, you need to modify strFormat to use .00 instead of .## as the code example showed.

Yes, this for sure looks definitive for my problem. Thank you for once again helping this beginner.

It would be no trouble at all for you if you were a beginner at VBA but experienced at researching problems. More likely than not, you would not even need to ask a question to someone else; you'd be able to solve it on your own -- and much, much faster, too. Never guess when you're coding; it's much faster to look it up.
Coding isn't a closed-book test.

So the hashes are like optional, versus the 0s will be forced.

Correct!

thank you thank you thank you thank you. You saved me from going down a project into some very unnecessary and ugly code.
this is such a relief that Word vba isn't as insane as I thought.

3:15 PM
Currency formatting is such a common problem that there pretty much has to be a solution out there, either built-in to the runtime (as in this case), or with some pre-canned solution you can find on the Internet. Implementing your own string parsing and formatting in this case is very painful and unnecessary.
When you get that sense of "someone else must have done this before", 99.9% of the time, you're right.
So, look it up.
Funny thing is, before you asked, I myself had no clue how to do this in VBA, if you sat me down with a pen and paper.
I probably won't remember it when I need to do it in some future project either, but I know how to look it up.

Here's a problem I don't have to consider at the moment. You both mentioned was I needing to check before formatting, a cursory look makes me think that's what they're trying to do here: stackoverflow.com/questions/13653063/…

@BradyTrainor Can you elaborate a little on what you mean? Are you saying that you think you need to check that it's a valid number before you try to format it?

No, I don't need to, that was just a tangential aside that I had happened upon something related to what I thought you were asking about earlier.
I don't anticipate needing to check if a number /should/ be formatted. I only refer to a value that I know I want to format. And the Format does this, perfectly.

I mean, if you try to format it as currency and it's a string like "Hello", it probably will just do nothing, but you might want to test it just to make sure...

yep, did nothing.

3:28 PM
ahh
probably fine then

hello -> hello
as opposed to "hello -> @#$%^&"
or $hello.00
so, I've memorized to google, "vba format function". (had googled other things, but could not decipher the hits at the time, had lost hope).

Bear metal programming.

Like googling "word vba format as currency" hadn't worked out so well. I imagine because Word is not as commonly macro'd as Excel. I had probably tried your "msdn vba *" search method too, but who knows what I used for keyword then.

Google is fickle. Sometimes it takes me 5 or 6 searches to get the right keywords.
@GFSE rofl

Anyway, adding noise. Thanks again for your help, I will now go to "finish" my macros.

Good luck!
@Bob So I think I've found the "Holy Grail" of chat apps for a guild in an online game. Don't know if it would be a suitable replacement for Gitter.im for us; probably not.

"Due to the rude, inappropriate, and mean-spirited moderating of the Superuser StackExchange site (a sentiment apparently shared by many people), I regret that I will be limiting my contributions there. I do not share those values. Hopefully things will improve, but based on recent behavior by some of the moderators on Superuser, I find it unlikely.

The other StackExchange sites seem to attract much better quality and more friendly moderators, and thus have healthier communities." - a users profile, we probably arent missing much though
Are we experiencing an exodus of American users?

ChatWing is nice and flexible. It has embed code (which will work on any site that lets you embed arbitrary JS); it has a "pop-out" (as a window); it has "open as a new tab" (via direct link); it has rich text; it has images, links, and video; it has moderator functionality; it has Android and iPhone apps (largely demanded feature on my guild); etc.

> Sadly, I’ve become soured by the SE network. It started great, but went downhill. Some mods are too aggressive/bias, policies are arbitrarily/capriciously/selectively applied, and some users treat the sites as MMOGs, “rep-whoring”, copying others’ work, and posting random guesses to game the system by abusing and exploiting auto-bounty assignment.

> I care(d) about the integrity of the site, so I feel anywhere that allows such disreputable behavior isn’t somewhere worth staying. My OCD not withstanding, I won’t be contributing much here anymore and will find somewhere else to help people

@DragonLord Individual people are always going to get upset. You can't please everyone. However, as long as it's not a widespread problem, I wouldn't worry.
SE as a whole is based around a philosophy that could almost be called socialist (the good of the many outweighs the good of the few), and is less focused on helping individual posters like a forum would be; once that philosophy trickles down into the rules, some people can't abide it.

The demographics of Super User leave me a bit uneasy...

@DragonLord Have you, or has anyone, actually performed any demographic study on SU's userbase, up to a statistically significant number?
Is that something we can get from data.stackexchange.com ?

I was going to try to do some sort of survey on Meta...

Maybe we can write a SQL query to harvest location field.

The activity patterns I'm used to seeing here, and the users I see here most often, seem to point to a shortage of American users

Give me a moment...
I'm refining the query.

american is a pretty wide demografic itself :-) filles with all numbers of cultures and styles, and value systems.

Here is an updated version

SELECT DISTINCT
    Location, count(*) c
FROM
    Users
WHERE
    Location <> ''
GROUP BY
    Location
ORDER BY
    c DESC;

@DragonLord For some reason, it isn't saving and updating. I basically did the same thing though
open your link in a new private tab - it's still the original version
but the one I linked to data.stackexchange.com/superuser/query/edit/313102 is updated

> San Francisco, CA 1109
Looks like a lot of users in Silicon Valley...
Also changed it to SELECT TOP 1000 to reduce execution time.

I bet we could parse strings of the format Some Place, CA where CA is some 2-letter state code, and extract those, and count them under 'United States' to bolster that number more
then 'Bangalore' needs to go under India, since there are thousands from Bangalore too
still, United States + San Francisco, CA > India + Bangalore, India
4106 from the UK, too
