00:03
this makes me all sorts of happy
00:42
@Bob: ordered the xiomi stuff
(My mom's phone's a xiomi so their chargers are known good (tm), and my moto charger is a little borked so I'll probably dump it at work)

Q: How do I remove the default program associated with an .exe in Windows 7?

Shashank SawantSomething really strange happened about 10 minutes ago. I tried to open a file named pdfsam.exe and instead of running it, Windows 7 asked me to choose a program to open the file with. Without realizing what I was getting into, I accidentally selected Windows Media Center (if I remember correctl...

An interesting problem...
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek nice
Overpriced cable though :P
@JourneymanGeek hmm, any chance you could forward a couple chargers this way? :P
Yeah, but its a bit oddball, its magnetic
Bob
Bob
...magnetic? The charger or the cable?
The cable ends
Bob
Bob
...huh
01:12
So it'll stick to itself
(No, I got it direct from xiaomi but DX was more googlable)
Hm. My bus is late
01:56
@Bob: aww, apparently the volume control dosen't work with the moto G
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek whaaa
Works with Samsung and Nokia phones :/
Well, the post is from last year, and I've had 2 major updates since then
@Bob: meh, between build quality, price and reviews, I think I'll be alright with 2 non functional buttons.
Pity the basic models are out of stock
What's the little silvery thing in the earbud tray?
Bob
Bob
Clip
Wait, did it arrive already?
The paperbacks don't sound nearly as good
naw
yeah, but they're nearly impulse price ;p
(actually looking at a unboxing video... the packaging seems super cool)
Its really quiet today. Like everyone is late ;p
02:50
@ bob the hdd OR ssd is the bottle neck and XP only takes 500 mb, or 1 GB to install unlike modern windows OS's so XP is faster
@snipe lol
03:11
I'm pretty sure whoever's on the radio is singing about a scottish spaceman.
@Bob ^ ^ ^
ugh. This is infuriating
I have a machine which has windows 7, randomly hangs, and never seems to hang when we try to replicate the issue
Event viewer logs are boring too
04:13
[Halfway to the Sun ...] Heyyyy ... what if this BALLOON is full of acorns?!
3
04:28
SQUIRRELS!
(also, clearly those squirrels are dicks, and don't like the one with the balloon much)

3 hours later…
Bob
Bob
07:33
@snipe That is a huge fallacy.
The installation size has practically nothing to do with performance.
A HDD is not an absolute bottleneck, either - once you've loaded data from disk (and newer versions are better at caching too)...
Not to mention that XP can't fully take advantage of an SSD - it doesn't know what an SSD is.
Proper TRIM and NCQ support is lacking.
It's also not properly tuned to take advantage of an SSD (Win7 isn't great there either. Win8 is better. Win10 might improve on that further - as SSDs become more common, it becomes more important for an OS to take advantage of one)
08:32
@Bob I now feel the pain you warned me about with those cheap DX USB cables
They're fine for deployment and debugging, but megashit for charging
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Hm? Not charging fast enough? :P
lol
It's like they're not charging at all
Bob
Bob
Sometimes!
08:32
@OliverSalzburg heh. I've got one on my work system. Its barely keeping my phone topped up
I had two BlackBerrys connected the whole night, they still refuse to turn on
Bob
Bob
I can expect 1.9A with my screen off, 1.2A with the screen on. Using one of the cheap cables? 0.46A max, which is sometimes below actual usage.
Well, one turns on and has a big warning sign on the battery
Bob
Bob
If it's low enough, some devices simply won't charge at all (e.g. Windows tablets).
Normally still trickle charges if the device is off, though.
08:34
Okay, so I need new cables now :P
Why are they charging so badly to begin with?
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Monoprice are supposed to be good, if a bit fragile.
The cables are crap? ;p
Obviously, one of the connectors broke, so I could peek inside. It's just 4 cables soldered to a piece of metal
Bob
Bob
I've found Anker cables to be excellent (they claim 21 AWG power wires), if you can get you hands on them.
@Bob shipping for monoprice outside the us seems pricy :/
Bob
Bob
08:35
@OliverSalzburg Really shoddy conductors. I believe some are 28 AWG, maybe worse. And often aluminium.
@JourneymanGeek Yea, if you aren't buying in bulk it's not worth it.
The Anker ones are available via Amazon, and shipping isn't too bad.
@Bob: Xiaomi has 120cm cables, but currently out of stock ;p
Bob
Bob
For 2A charging, you want at least 26 AWG, ideally 24.
@Bob 28 AWG? Is that like the diameter of the individual cables?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Too expensive! :P
Bob
Bob
08:36
@OliverSalzburg Yea.
@Bob the 120mm cables are a bit cheaper
Maybe I should get one of those monster cables. I hear they are high quality
@OliverSalzburg: just make sure its directional
Bob
Bob
Notice 28 AWG has 1.5x the resistance of 26 AWG.
08:38
@Bob: I figure if its reliable, meh.
(Tho, I'll likely end up moving my slightly grumpy moto charger to work)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I need to find a way to get one of those Xiaomi chargers - they seem like a decent price :P
The cables? Anker is cheaper.
But Anker now refuses to ship chargers out of the US, so that's a no.
@Bob: Shipping tho! ;p
I'm getting free shipping for that lot of stuff
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It looks suspiciously like the Anker ones :P
Might be manufactured in the same factory, actually...
@Bob: My mom's phone has one ;p
Oh, and your plugs arn't the UK style ones right?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I've got a pile of travel adaptors :P
My old laptop was from HK. They used UK plugs.
08:45
(I hate adaptors)
Bob
Bob
lol
Also, I probably have 2 powerstrips to power everything, and that's probably unsafe ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Problem is, I can't seem to find any parcel forwarders from Sg to Au.
I was going to ask if you could help with that, but singpost => aus is surprisingly expensive (considering how many companies offer free airmail through them)
@Bob: Wouldn't be surprised if they opened up a aussie store
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Give it five years. It's always "oh, they'll be here soon, we just have to wait!"
08:52
Singpost is completely shit for sending people stuff ;p
Bob
Bob
Well, I suppose Huawei is kinda expanding here.
heh, apparently there was a unofficial store, but they were asked to close down by xiaomi.
Lato is a neat-o font: fontsquirrel.com/fonts/LATO
I'll use it for everything now \o/
Could check out DX or some other slightly dodgy online store? ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek DX = fakes
08:56
Their pistons are a few dollars more expensive, and so's the powerbanks, which makes sense, but cheaper than transhipping
Bob
Bob
iBuyGou might work (that's where I got the Pistons; they're somewhat trusted)... hm.
@JourneymanGeek Probably because they were using the name.
Bob
Bob
There's still a couple small ones (e.g. Mustato), but they don't have the chargers.
(anyway, in this case, its definately real)
hm. If the charger comes with a cable.. ;p
Bob
Bob
As long as they don't use the "Xiaomi" name, there's nothing they can really do to stop them.
@JourneymanGeek What's definitely real?
08:59
I seem to recall they do
@Bob: the stuff in my order? ;p
Bob
Bob
Ah.
@JourneymanGeek The one with the cable is the Chinese version.
If you look at the Chinese website, they have the 1A one without the cable (49 RMB) and the 2A one with a cable (59 RMB)
ahh
(not a biggie, I probably have a known good cable somewhere)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek There's one with a cable on the Sg store too
Oh?
There's only one listed
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not under chargers.
09:03
That's a bit naff
Bob
Bob
Hm?
I didn't see that ;p
After our cable talk I connected my Z10 to a Samsung cable that came with my S2 originally. It's now 30% charged already
(and blah ,One plus needs to sell phones here. Even if I'll wait for the next one)
@JourneymanGeek I noticed a major annoyance with my One lately
Won't wake up while being charged
Double-tapping it does nothing. Pressing power does nothing
As soon as you disconnect the cable, it wakes up though
09:07
@OliverSalzburg the moto G uos pretty awesome, other than... cough the lack of storage.
@OliverSalzburg 0_0
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I still have my eyes on the Yota :P
Happens very frequently lately. I wasn't in the mood yet to research or contact support
I'll probably be told to factory reset anyway
@Bob: yota's on sale here ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ... ... adds Sg to possible places to move to
Apparently I don't exist :(
Whose website?
Bob
Bob
09:11
@JourneymanGeek Yotaphone
Bob
Bob
Expensive, though. And somewhat poor specs for the price.
Probably see what the next release is first :P
@Bob that's roughly exactly what I'm hoping for
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek What?
The next Yota? :P
That the next release of one plus is good, and available here? ;p
(or ship it to a cousin)
Bob
Bob
09:15
Ah.
Also...
> The low refresh rate and monochrome colour palette means that watching YouTube videos or gaming is a task best left to the AMOLED display on the front.
...someone actually tried that?
Of course.
rofl
Actually I remember someone doing it in a review
Bob
Bob
...wow
> Xiaomi's MIUI software, is a customized version of the operating system that the company updates weekly from user feedback.
weekly? I'm lucky to get an update every other year from Samsung -_-
weekly
and heh, i found a bug in xiaomi's website ;)
Someone please name a PDF reader that doesn't suck. Adobe and Foxit are on my "suck list"
@OliverSalzburg: define suck
09:30
@JourneymanGeek If it comes with any capability to enhance my PDFing experience by involving the cloud, it sucks
I mainly use sumatra these days, but the free version of pdf exchange (viewer?) wasn't bad back when I used it
If it installs browser plugins or even has the option to do it, it probably sucks
Oh, try sumatra.
I will. Thanks :)
It views PDFs (and cbrs and ebooks)
09:31
I was just trying to save a PDF to a new location with Adobe Acrobat. While the Save As dialog was open, I browsed with Windows Explorer to where I wanted to save the file. But there was already a PDF with my desired name, so I opened it. That froze Acrobat
Oh, this has an optional* browser plugin. Which I didn't know about.
since its really optional
Looks light-weight. I already like it. I'll give it a try
Bob
Bob
sand now, huh
those metal bolts are too expensive? :P
@OliverSalzburg PDF.js? Whatever Chrome comes with? :P
@Bob: clearly
@Bob Interesting idea. But I'll try sumatra for now. Makes a good first impression
Bob
Bob
09:35
Someone was asking if this is real. uhhhh.
50Ah? Suuuure.
@Bob: I like it more, and its more reliable than the windows 8 one
Bob
Bob
(psst: that's physically impossible with Li-ion in that size)
oh god why did I read the comments
> Absolute rubbish! You probably have some agenda and sell high priced "brand" ones. I have one EXACTLY like the one in you pictures. Opened it up just now and - surprise - it has 6 very fat batteries in it, like an AA cell on steroids.

Stop spreading nonsense!
I suddenly have a really strong urge to punch someone
@Bob Well, they explain why:
> the capacity calculation method is using the power divide the power, not current divide current.
Makes sense, doesn't it?
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg wat
That's what it says on the auction
09:39
Someone give the man a doctorate in electrology.
I'm such an idiot. I just wanted to move my Google Drive folder. Which includes my KeePass database. So, obviously, I closed KeePass. Logged out of Google Drive Sync, deleted the Google Drive folder and then quickly realized how fucked I am now
Bob
Bob
Password recovery email?
Other device you're logged in on?
Oh, I have other devices
For example, my laptop. Which is slow as fuck
And I just used it to generate an application password, but Drive needs the full one
Which is like 100 characters long
Now I have to copy it to a text file and get it to my desktop via USB like a caveman
So many annoyances... O___o
You click a Skype chat window, the focus is not automatically on the input box. Why?
In FreeOTP, you generate an OTP token, it pops open a toast saying "Token copied to clipboard". The toast is displayed right over the token, so you can't read it
Then this:
And, of course, I click Quit, but the application doesn't quit
And why does Notepad++ have an open handle to the Google Drive sync database?
And now I've reinstalled Drive and when I start it, it silently exits again. Great
10:23
So, what is this about ?
12
Q: Google Drive terminates without error on startup

IsziI've used Google Drive for awhile now, but it won't start up after installing on my latest system re-build. @Bob It makes me wonder what could be inside the flashdrives I see being sold on the streets: 256 GB for USD 4.
And I don't mean in stores: I mean literally on streets:
Looks legit!
such memories
@ThatBrazilianGuy: probably those 4gb on loop drives.

@ThatBrazilianGuy when I was a pup, the main computer mall here was filled with dodgy cd stores ;p
14:29
@ThatBrazilianGuy That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
kinda reminds me of that ;p

@ThatBrazilianGuy: wwe're a little country ;p
(and man, can't really pick up stuff from there for a while ;p)
I'm very cautious when I buy something from that "market".
14:37
Basically it's looooots and lots of either/both shitty and counterfeit stuff from China
lol
SLS is mostly cleaned up now
USED to be like that
There's a "mall" of sorts, a building with 3 floors of medium-sized stores and small stands
Where I can buy computer things "cheap" (in Brazilian prices)
man.
yeah
singapore prices are ok
Sometimes really cheap ;p
is looking forward to his xiaomi order getting here ;p
but with our mall, and most things, you need to comparison shop
The stuff sold on this mall is (usually) genuine, with original packaging and warranty (well, HDDs and processors have only a plastic cover and no packaging. But original labels and barcodes. I'm sure they buy in bulk to lower prices).
hdds in baggies?
Only way to get em ;p
14:42
plastic bags
processors come boxed here mostly
but hdds just come in anti static bags
But on the sidewalks to this mall, people from the "popular market" will stop you trying to sell you pirated CDs and DVDs for 3USD each
"Games, movies, apps"
lol
SLS used to be like that
then MASSIVE police raids
Police is usually a few meters away and will collect money from them just watch.
oh, police here is mostly honest
14:44
O_____________o
I have never seem these two words on the same phrase
;p
they are!
@JourneymanGeek That big popular market has massive raids once or twice each year IIRC. Haven't changed anything in 15 years ;p
We don't have much corruption at that level
just stupidity
Well, stupidity is a requirement for starting a political carreer, right?
heh
Old school pols here were ok
COMPLETELY ruthless but efficient
current batch occationally...
Bob
Bob
14:47
huh, those photos remind me of Paddy's Market... haven't been there in a few years
> The markets cater for both locals and tourists and is home to over 1,000 stalls that sell almost everything from fashion and accessories, sporting goods, fresh fruit and vegetables, pets supplies, clothing, electrical goods to arts and crafts and souvenirs.
Every average-sized to big city I've ever been has at least one market like that
Bob
Bob
I need to go take another look sometime :P
we don't. we're boring.
;p
Sometimes multiple markets: one with hand-made stuff for tourists, one with tech and (metal) hardware and tools etc, one with clothes and cheap "jewelry" and bags and toys and perfums
hmm
we have an electronics componet place
there's no real 'tool' place, there's a few shops people in the know go to
14:53
We don't have one with tourist stuff, but I think every place I ever been as a tourist (I've only traveled on my own country) has a tourist market.
And usually things are much cheaper
In 2014 I was in the northeast and a restaurant in the sidewalk of the fanciest beach, with all-you-can-eat food and a guy playing live piano, was cheaper than buying a portion of food where I live.
And a kg of shrimp by the beachside was so cheap...
I was so mad I was there for a course for work, so basically I had very limited time for tourist stuff, basically at nght, and couldn't find any open kiosk with those shrimps ;___;
Yeah I love shrimp
!s/2014/2013/
I don't think I've ever been on a vacation, ever, and certainly not as a tourist
its always temples and relatives ;p
Till my mid-twenties (that is, not too long ago) I never had any money to travel, so I always had to count on the kindness of relatives
Damn, I still don't have much money, the last long travel I made I stayed at my wife's relatives
my dad never really liked travelling ;p
15:01
But they're distant relatives, so they were nice and basically would drive us, offer us local food, and let us feel comfortable
Close relatives are... more complicated.
Our connection today is extra slow....
In a couple of years I might go to france
I was there on an exchange program, its a lovely country
but I need to plan/save for that too ;p
I've never been there, but I usually don't hear good things about french people, specially the way they treat foreigners
lol
I've never had issues
other than people talking to me in french, seeing my confused look and switching to english
I tend to avoid the big cities, anywhere
15:07
Yeah, probably a big part of what I hear are exaggerated stereotypes.
Other day I watched a documentary about the way Rio was portraited in movies in the 20th century and maaaaaan...
I alternated between laughter and jaw on the floor
