rightclick somewhere empty and make sure menu bar is selected?
@JourneymanGeek This is the correct answer.
quickly? ALT, V, T, M.
I really wish Windows File History had a better UI where you could navigate by date and see an overview of previous versions—a calendar feature would be really useful
00:37
@DragonLord Like some kind of Time Machine? ;)
Not necessarily that fancy, but an overview would make navigation much easier.
Having several thousand revisions in File History with only linear navigation is hardly user-friendly.
There's not even a mechanism to jump to a particular time.
This is especially an issue because File History is set up to take a revision every 20 minutes on my machine.
I have 3,177 history revisions so far and this is not great.
I wish I could send a feature request to Microsoft reasonably easily...
@DragonLord How much space does this use up?
It's mostly small files (e.g. game saves) and they're compressed on the history drive. Less than 15 GB so far.
Pictures are excluded to reduce the size of the history—I back up photos on my own to another drive
Okay, it's actually 16.5 GB compressed, 21.5 GB uncompressed.
00:56
thanks

twitch watching a video on PowerShell and the instructor keeps referring to @ as Ampersand.
lol
Oooh boy, now he's saying * is a colon.
whats the feasiblity of installing win 2k3 on new hardware
driver support basically
01:47
Probably pretty bad ;p
Would be roughly on par with install XP of the same architecture on the system.
Ha! Watching two ex-engineers having trouble trying to dismantle a broken printer... I can see the exact way to do it from here, but they are adamant they know how to get it.
ex-engineers? 0_0
They're both management now, whereas in their prime they would have been very hands on with the equipment.
ahh. PERSONALLY, as someone who was brought up by wild engineers, I'd grab a service manual ;p
@JourneymanGeek PSSH
We don't have service manuals.
But when we do have service manuals, they look like that ^
(pro-tip: turn your head upside down so you can see the diagram as it should be viewed.)

looks fine if its printed out. ;p

This seems potentially handy
03:14
Why can't they design the ADF (and printers and office equipment in general) to be modular so that servicing would be easier?
cause its a profit center, and modular machines last longer so they can't keep selling loss leading machines with new cart designs every few years ;p
Who knows, maybe in a few years someone will build an FOSS or semi FOSS, refillable, hackable printer. Print heads are the only 'hard' part here.
04:16
cool. I can now ssh into my linux box from werk

Bob
@JourneymanGeek You mean FOSH, right? :P
@Bob FOSS/FOSH. ;p

Can I convert personal photo shot with digital camera to vector and resize it without losing quality?
Can anyone thing of something that would prevent a laptop from restarting
then after a minute it emits one one high pitched beep, and then allows the power to flow for about 2 seconds
rince repeat
@Bob ideas?
@JourneymanGeek?
06:00
The high pitched beep is a symptom
Bob
Bob
@soandos Sounds like overheating.
They acquired license to publish comics? Does that mean for monthly subscription I can enjoy comics dating back far?
@Bob, even in ~2 seconds?
Also, CPU is cool to the touch and it does not seem to matter if the heatsink is on tight
@JourneymanGeek its one beep, and it seems to be a "reset beep". I.e. It does not turn on again if connectted to power until that beep happens (if you disconnect the power, and replug in, it starts immediately)
Also, no change if RAM is in or not, or HD, or keyboard
same behavior
06:35
Any ideas?
Yeah. First port of call for me would be to look up the bios error beeps
@JourneymanGeek no beep on startup
wait. Can it cold boot?
?
What do you mean? Power is not sustained for more than 2 seconds or so
ahh. so it can't switch on
06:40
Yea
tried the magic start button trick?

Q: What does the ThinkPad "power button trick" do?

PopsWhile searching for a fix for my broken ThinkVantage Power Manager, I came across a forum post suggesting that I press the power button ten times after disconnecting power to the machine. At first I thought it was a joke or a troll, but there are other reports suggesting the same thing — or very ...

Hold on I'll try both varients (Its a lenovo)
No dice
06:46
Yea
07:04
my thinkpads are reliable enough (other than the damned yellow usb ports) that they tend to go obsolete before they die ;p

Anyone know of a NAS which can act like a regular USB drive to download files from? Like.. you take your laptop, plug into the NAS, and it will appear like a hard drive to the laptop, so you can "download" files from it.
08:57
quite a lot of NAses do that
er... actually no, I'm clearly chasing my own tail
Well of course you are. You're a dog.
I mean, it seems like a terribly useful feature, but I don't know if any of the USB ports on a NAS do that. Mine certainly can't do it—it'd rather try to use the laptop as a disk.
1
Q: Is there a NAS that can act as a "simple", "dumb" USB Drive?

Rupert JawosammaI have a satellite video reciever that can store (save) movies on an attched USB hard disk (FAT32 or NTFS). I there an NAS-System out there that can act as a dumb hard disk attached via USB towards the video reciever?? Whhat I am looking for is a NAS that my satellite reciever will accpept as a ...

:P
CLOSE! HARDWARE REC!
It's like.. I WANT THIS. But I also have to close it, so meh
09:04
;p
Yeah ;p
and blah, I want a bigass storage array ;p
(I may build one at some point ;p)
We need one at work
So I'm thinking about which NAS to buy. Spending the money and configuring it isn't such a big problem, but having someone take care of it for 5+ years is.
You'd have to check if the RAID is intact, if all the drives are working, have a good and working replication of it somewhere, etc.
Yeah. Work has 30 disk enclosures... and we're in the middle of replacing like half our drives ;p

@slhck The first two are what automated emails are for.
What makes me sad is these things are often $2 shipping within the US...
(Heck, intra-Aus shipping costs more than that, never mind international)
10:50
@Bob And in 5 years, when I will not work at this institute anymore, the e-mail will go to my dead inbox :P
And people will be wondering why the damn machine beeps all the time and no backup HDDs are available.
Bob
Bob
@slhck Not personal emails.
@Bob Ah. Well, in that case, nobody will feel responsible.
Bob
Bob
You should have an email alias going to either the whole team (very critical stuff) or at least an alias that gets redirected when someone leaves :P
^ that ;p
10:51
If you delegate a task to multiple people, chances of any of them feeling responsible will decrease to 0 :P
Bob
Bob
@slhck ...this isn't just sending random emails to everyone in the company
delegate to, not really, make aware? Yes
Bob
Bob
it's sending emails to whichever team is responsible for IT
in the form of "SOMETHING CRITICAL JUST DIED DROP EVERYTHING AND FIX IT NOW"
Yeah, it's a bit of a problem because we have an official IT team, but this NAS would bypass them. We'd basically just keep it in our room.
So I need to first find someone who wants to take care of it in case I'm not there.
Bob
Bob
@slhck ah, that's a bit of a different matter

And Wikipedia mentions which channel it'll be on in Australia too O_O
This Sunday. I might watch it on TV. First time watching TV in years, not counting New Years stuff :P
13:35
@JourneymanGeek Yes
I moved it to the office
13:54
ahh
I got the hoodie ^^

After looking up something for a SU answer, amazon is convinced I want shitty prebuilt desktops.

XD
I'm sorry, I'm not getting a prebuilt desktop unless its free ;p
@JourneymanGeek Depending on the brand, not even if they pay me.
14:15
@ThatBrazilianGuy: actually if its wierd and shitty but new I wouldn't mind
@JourneymanGeek I'm wearing that as well ;D
XD
I have less swag :/
I have a t-shirt (from the first year), a SU windows 8 T and the hoodie
14:34
I have a separate section in my wardrobe for SU swag ;P
And an extra drawer for my SU underwear
So my workplace decided on a new CMS I know nothing about and I have to learn it from scratch. Oh, and they want a decade-old site migrated in a week. .___.

starting to hate windows 10 now
I type E: in and it opnes ADSI edit I type control in and it gives me nividia graphics settings
I type shutdown in and it opnes the internet
I hit alt+F to open file and it doesnt even show delete, copy, paste and cut
what was wrong with using file, edit, view, etc rather than this clutter of tiny icons and irrelivant options
I think there changing it just for the sake of it with no real reason so thats gonna end badly
it worked fine before why change it
Weird, given that it's so close to a final product
you can no longer remove the start menu tiles or resize the whole menu too
can windows 7 + mound ISO files to a drive with no extra tools?
magic ISO does not work
16:55
@snipe Not that I know. And I'd be impressed if it does.
@snipe nope
you need DT or something similar, but in linux is trivial
Daemontools has spyware; don't use that
17:15
@snipe How are those "bugs" just coming to light now? It works as expected for me on a Surface Pro 2...
17:47
there not bugs there there by intentional design
windows should have its own uninstaller, im sick of crappy installers not properly uninstalling things now I gotta waste hours trying to manually remove junk
how do I just take ownership of all subfolders and folders on C:/
I cant even get into the start menu folder
trying deamon tools
cant even take ownership of a junk desktop shortcut...
if this is supposed to be close to the final build of windows 10 forget it
Don't take ownership of the entire C:, trust me...
And Windows has their own installer, but they need it to be customizable for the developers to ensure their product works properly. And the Start Menu folder is at %APPDATA%\Local\Microsoft\Start Menu, since Windows Vista
And as stated above, don't use Daemon Tools if you can help it
18:02
windows cant find it
DT installer hangs
so that failed
18:21
DT cant mount it either
18:53
@allquixotic I am on Mobile so i cant see what are you replying me to. And WTF at the video... Huh?
19:14
Nearly no traffic jams...
And a pleasant temperature of 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 F)
I just left work, stared at the sun, stared at the non-moving cars, and headed straight back to the safety or the A/C unit
20:08
@ThatBrazilianGuy lol
20:21
@DragonLord The internals of the ADF don't break down very often. It's the feed module, which is modular that is the most common issue. It's also considered a consumable and user replaceable. So they end up having a high retail cost.
FF13 is installed and works on my machine.
The 30/60 fps issue is still a problem, though.
I did some digging around and found the cause of the issue: steamcommunity.com/app/292120/discussions/0/611698195145993837
The engine seemingly limits the frame rate to avoid overloading the GPU
@DragonLord old-gen console to PC ports have never been good. :P
Adjusting the GPU settings to prefer performance over power consumption helps, and overclocking the GPU adds even more headroom.
The game is not CPU-bound on my machine.
@allquixotic Mind you, I haven't A/C at my office (for a year now (despite the replacements being sitting on the corner for the last 2 months (so most of the team just brings fans from home))).
So now I am just sitting at someone else's desk in some other office, waiting for the sun to set or the traffic to clear. Whatever comes first.
if you dont ahve AC whar do you use a lemon?
20:27
@snipe Tears and frustration Uh... I just said. Fans.
You might be confusing "air conditioner" with "alternate current". But I'd just say "electricity" or "power".
I am, I assumed AC current
Oh no, usually we don't get power outages more than once or twice a month.
It was a bit worse when I started here.
@ThatBrazilianGuy I don't remember our last power outage. o.O
@MichaelFrank I don't remember my last power outage at home. At work, our last power outage was, let me see, that'd be last Monday sir. (30min, twice in a row)
how do you set up network booting (bios net boot) in windows
I dont seem to see any tutorials
20:36
@DragonLord I read this as Firefox 13 and then wondered why you were having FPS issues in an old web browser
@snipe Using network boot, loading Windows isn't necessarily a step of booting
> When using PXE the boot process is changed from the normal order to: Power on –> BIOS –> Network Card’s PXE stack –> Network Boot Program (NBP) downloaded using TFTP from server to Client’s RAM –> NBP’s responsibility to perform the next step (a.k.a. 2nd stage boot).
20:58
do you need windows server to host the NBP
21:31
@snipe You need a server, I don't think it needs to be running Windows though.
windows 7 and that has some server capibilities
could be cool to do it between two windows 7 PC's

> Protip: Don't get the Venti tumbler unless you order a lot of Venti drinks. It's huge and you might not want to carry it all the time. Also, unlike the Grande tumbler, the Venti tumbler is too tall to fit in the Starbucks Mastrena espresso machine, reducing the environmental benefit as the shots will have to be pulled into another cup, likely a Short cup. (At least a Short cup takes fewer resources to make than a Venti Iced cup, but it's not ideal.)
