ugh. Our setup for adding new system is confusing. I need to update... 4 different places 0_0
03:18
@Bob Here in the US, we don't use fountain pens all that much
How widespread are fountain pens where you live (Sydney)?
I happen to prefer fountain pens over ballpoints in the vast majority of situations
The pen shown there is the very pen I use most of the time at home
It is a Pelikan Souverän M600 in black-green
Actually, that might be an M400 (the nib is slightly shorter from the position of the "M" nib grade mark)
@DragonLord: fountain pens are rare everywhere ;p
Amusingly, I'm using @Bob's smiggle at work
03:35
@JourneymanGeek You're in Singapore, how often do you use or encounter fountain pens?
Here in New York, I almost never see anyone using fountain pens
There's a famous shop in the city, Fountain Pen Hospital, that sells this stuff
That M600 currently runs about $350-400
I also have a Pelikan Toledo M700, which was purchased as a graduation souvenir
Super rarely
The Toledo is my "exam pen"
My current favourite FP was bought online (a black lamy al star)
@JourneymanGeek Cheap, rugged Lamy pens
Never had one of these
They say they write pretty well and are rock-solid
@DragonLord: They are.
03:44
I'm not a fan of the design, though
Cause they're angularish?
My EDC pen is a Pilot Prera, demonstrator with green accents
@JourneymanGeek Too simplistic for my taste
ahh. I like simple ;p
I don't want to show off. I want a tool
@JourneymanGeek My first "serious" pen was a Pelikan M200
Elegant, reliable, reasonably priced
I ultimately lost it and ended up getting that M600 a few months later
Pelikan writing instruments have gotten very expensive lately
The Toledo M700 routinely sells for upwards of $1000
The M200 was $84 when I first got it but now costs about $100-$130
(depending on where you get it, of course)
I seem to recall my entire pen order was less than that ;p
(I got ink too - noodler's HOD)
03:54
@JourneymanGeek The Pelikans get Edelstein premium ink, Onyx black—this stuff costs almost $30 a bottle
The Pilot Prera gets much cheaper (but still decent) Sheaffer Skrip black
heh, I got a pretty huge bottle of noodler. Its water resistant (proof?), fairly cheap and dark
@JourneymanGeek Should be almost entirely tamper-proof. This is a "Bulletproof" ink.
yup.
I couldn't remember. I'm at work XD
Noodler's Heart of Darkness is a value black ink with very strong saturation; current formulations are Bulletproof
Oh, it is.
Kinda looking forward to trying it on a modded vpen ;p
(granted, you can feed a vpen anything)
04:01
Not fond of Noodler's ink, they're high maintenance
in what way?
@JourneymanGeek Bulletproof inks have a tendency to require more frequent cleaning
I tend to flush out my pens every 2-3 refills anyway.
I have no trouble with cleaning my pens every 6-8 months with the inks I use
Pelikans are very, very reliable
(Other than the Vpens. But meh, they are supposed to be 'disposable')
04:03
We're gearing up for what might well be the biggest blizzard in New York history
It's not really a matter of if we'll lose power more than it is when and how long
Hence, I may not be around tomorrow
I prefer fine nibs, although my Toledo has a more exotic OM (oblique medium) nib on it
> All Pelikan fountain pens have a special insert inside the cap that ensures an airtight fit and thus the immediate flow of ink, even after a longer period of rest.
I've had my M600 sit in storage for months at a time and it would start up right away, zero skipping
That's just how reliable these Pelikans are
They just work
@HackToHell ultrakeet.com.au/casual/… might amuse you
04:21
> Of course, I start to panic and rush to take the printer out of debug mode. I shove the labels into my backpack and pretend nothing happened for the rest of the afternoon.
lololol :D
There's actually a language for programming printers o0
Gotta leave soon
@HackToHell: oh, there's a specific language for this. Wouldn't be too surprised if it was a PCL dialect
Printer Command Language, more commonly referred to as PCL, is a page description language (PDL) developed by Hewlett-Packard as a printer protocol and has become a de facto industry standard. Originally developed for early inkjet printers in 1984, PCL has been released in varying levels for thermal, matrix printer, and page printers. HP-GL and PJL are supported by later versions of PCL. PCL is occasionally and incorrectly said to be an abbreviation for Printer Control Language which actually is another term for Page description language. == PCL levels 1 through 5 overview == PCL levels 1 through...
@JourneymanGeek My Brother laser printer understands PCL6
04:28
Its the closest thing to a 'standard' printer driver, though most consumer printers don't support it
Okay this Ara thingy is making me bloody excited
Ara's the modular phone yes?
ahh. Will watch it at lunch ;p
Ah yes, you are working now ;p
04:31
gotta earn my kibble somehow ;p
05:00
I don't really get why I am facing this issue
SetSystemFileCacheSize was at 16 gb
made it into 0.5 gb

@DragonLord You start by realising you don't use Greasemonkey directly.
Greasemonkey is merely a framework that lets you run userscripts and provides supporting functionality.
You either run a userscript that depends on GM, or you want to write your own script.
If neither is the case, then "using GM" is meaningless.
Side note: a userscript is a piece of JS that runs inside the page context, but is loaded by the user rather than the site.
People use them to customise sites, especially when they don't need the added power, complexity and platform-dependence of a full addon.
@DragonLord Very very rare.
One major-ish FP-dedicated shop. Some smaller stationery and trinket shops that stock FPs.
If you ask random people on the street, the chance of them using an FP is basically nonexistent.
@JourneymanGeek o.O
Rather than the Daiso ones? :P
Happened to have it in my pencil case ;p

Too bad they don't sell them anymore.
I think I pointed it out before: reviews.smiggle.com.au/0582-en_au/1143361/…

Ya. Smiggle is intimidating ;p

This pen writes just like its name - FOUNTAIN - It pours out with ink making it eay to write with... The only complaint I have is that I've only had it for a couple of months and already it seems to have broken down! :( Hopefully when I go to Smiggle I can get another one! :)
Bet that one didn't bother replacing the ink.
Also, pours O_O

My usual writing instrument is a mechanical pencil with 3b lead ;p

I can't really use anything softer than B.
Even 2B is a bit too soft.
Don't really use pencils much these days though.

Q: 6 pin motherboard power connector?

SqueazerI have an HP ProDesk 600 G1 desktop PC, and I'm upgrading it with a new Graphics card and a new PSU. Now, the problem I'm having is that the motherboard in the PC doesn't have a standard 20/24 pin ATX power connector. Instead it has a 6 pin power connector and a 4 pin next to the CPU. The 4pin ...

@JourneymanGeek I did, but still edit's on this :/
I was almost going to suggest splicing into the old connectors, then I realised OP would likely hurt himself
@bummi: Meh, minor issue really
13:18
@JourneymanGeek licences are for lawyers , this one seems dangerous to recommend, but I don't know is a close reason for things like this does exist ...

I have no concept of heavy snow. Or really any snow at all apart from a brief skiing trip.
The most we ever get is hail.

@Bob Yeah
It's okay right now but will become very dangerous in a few hours

Can snow cause issues with gas or water? Leaks, burst pipes?
Above ground power lines are obviously at risk
16:56
@Bob Yes, we have above-ground power lines
@Bob hit?
I've stocked up on water in the event pipes freeze up
*reads up*
@allquixotic: Bob is in Australia
Brace for heavy snow in about 4-8 hours.
well, I'm in Maryland... it's been snowing all morning but only sticking in the grass
the roads are so salty that Chinese restaurant employees are out on the side of the road picking up the salt so they don't have to buy it ;)
roads are completely clear... it'd take a blizzard to overcome this amount of salt
16:58
@allquixotic We're getting a blizzard.
we had salt from our previous dusting on the road
they added even more
/me never saw snow in his life. :(
I can't imagine I'm going to have snow problems at all except in my driveway
which I'll have to shovel
the amount of salt they put on our roads is ridiculous

@TheLittleNaruto Hello!
Just installed Ubuntu on my ASUS x550ld and touchpad is not working at all. I had to connect mouse. Even mouse's right click is not working also, and left click works only after 2-3 times
@TheLittleNaruto what version of Ubuntu?
@TheLittleNaruto are the graphics responsive or are you seeing lots of visual lag in addition to the left click lag?

Hi. Can anybody help me, please? Is there any option for IDM to read the links from text file and download it?
I have hundreds of links saved as text file and I want to download them with IDM. Is it possible to use this text file to downloading via IDM?
Thanks in advance

Sorry, never used IDM (didn't even know what it was)
Hey guys. I think I'm going to reformat my laptop and reinstall Windows on it. It was a fun run, but I had to reinstall b/c I screwed up the partition table and I don't feel like configuring Linux again. I imaged the drive before removing Windows so I'm just going to restore it. :P
lol
That's usually a good idea
That's always how I do it :P
I also unburied my desktop computer so I can use it again XD
I'm actually working from home
Oh, and uninstalling VirtualBox somehow screwed up my network drivers so my VPN connections didn't work anymore and I couldn't create new ones (had to delete the existing one in safe mode)
It'd just create a bunch of WAN Miniports in Device Manager with yellow exclamation marks b/c drivers weren't there
Luckily the uninstall created a restore point so doing a system restore fixed it.
Absolutely lame that it happened though
20:04
I reinstalled my network drivers too and it didn't help.
I dunno what it did but yeah.
I had wierd shit like that happen before ;p
This was on my desktop
Yeah
I was dreading having to do a Windows reinstall or something. I don't even know if I can reinstall drivers that targeted without knowing precisely what files are needed
(which I didn't)
Internet didn't help either. It was one of those incredibly specific issues
lol
I tend to assume windows will pull in generic drivers that are good enough
Yeah but if I went into device manager and tried updating drivers or uninstalling the devices (first thing I tried), it didn't do anything
granted, at the moment I have an excellent, though untested backup system
20:07
"most up to date drivers are already installed" and it wouldn't uninstall anything.
If I tried to connect to VPN, it'd freeze the network icon in the system tray (like, clicking it wouldn't bring up network information)
And like I said, I had to boot into safe mode w/ networking in order to delete the VPN connection. When I tried to recreate it, it'd just hang at "Creating VPN connection"
what flavour of VPN?
Regular PPTP w/ MSCHAPv2 I think
20:09
No Cisco or any other software to install for it.
I knew PPNP sounded wrong. PPTP :P
I read that as PPTP anyway ;p
I should prolly go back to sleep ;p
Hehe yes. :P
Its 4am, and I have work today ;p
20:11
Ow! Sleep! :P
Night!
@Psycogeek Unregulated battery supply such as a rechargeable Alkaline or NiMh batteries may have rechargeable cells containing mercury or cadmium and thus can be an environmental hazardous unless disposed of properly?
@DragonLord How's record-breaking blizzard?
Why fountain pens are so expensive? amazon.com/s/…
20:59
@Boris_yo Just shoveled and salted the driveway.
It's slowing down a bit but is expected to intensify sharply in a few hours
@Boris_yo They're hand-crafted in Germany, especially the nib
That should get a sense of the sort of pens you're looking at
I have the M600 in black-green
There are lots of different fountain pens out there—Lamy makes some inexpensive, durable ones
It's an old video, but the Pelikan Souverän production process is pretty much the same today
These days, fountain pens are often seen as status symbols and luxury products, but there are some pretty good ones inside of $100
Parker and Waterman also makes some great pens
Bob
Bob
22:09
@DragonLord None of mine break the $50 barrier, let alone $100.
Well, I suppose that Parker one technically would... :P
Currently using a Pilot 78G as my primary pen. Had blue ink in the Lamy Safari, which ended up drying and had to be cleared out... I usually prefer black.
Also have a couple of really cheap ones (Smiggle, Daiso/Platinum, generic eBay/Hero) to play around with... some are alright, others are bleh.
22:43
Please be advised: I will be shutting down my laptop at about 0300 UTC due to the blizzard—I will be on my Nexus 7 instead and will reserve my laptop's power for charging other devices. I expect to lose Internet access for significant periods of time; how long I cannot say.
if I lose power, I have 30 Ah @ 3.7V of backup batteries for my phone... good for several days
wait, no, 43 Ah

74 Wh from battery packs, and the rest from the laptop with its two extra batteries.
Hm. Actually... could probably rig something up with the 18650s. That adds...
I have two laptop batteries for about 150 Wh, with my laptop capable of charge-and-sleep

mdpcI have noticed that the close queue is now over 1000 in length. Is this simply caused by the lack of reviewers or is it caused by something else? BTW, I have seen the automatic increase in the number of close votes allowed. I presume this is an effort to reduce the close queue length. But I...

@killermist Speaking of - I don't think that question is actually off-topic for that reason.
It's not asking for a hardware rec, it's asking for somewhat-general info on USB headsets.
Argh. I'm on chat support with comcast. My upload is supposed to be 10 Mbps but I only get about 6. Their support guy is asking me all kinds of irrelevant questions. I'm sure they just misconfigured my account for a different internet tier, but no we have to do the whole rigamarole.
He keeps asking about wireless. IT'S NOT A WIRELESS ISSUE I TOLD YOU FIVE TIMES IT'S A WIRED CONNECTION.
@nhinkle Can you just ask for the next-level support tier? Making advanced users answer zombie-layer questions is counterproductive to both you and them.
@killermist if he doesn't do something useful soon then yes I'm going to ask if I can be escalated
I keep thinking of this:
@nhinkle I would be tempted to say in no unclear voice, "You're asking me zombie-grade questions. I know my network. My network is not the issue. There's something between me and you that is the issue. Please bypass all the idiot-checking questions."
Brighthouse support seems to recognize that I'm not an incompetent when I use their support. That could be because I make it clear that I know my network isn't the issue.
23:30
Comcast is a bit harder to work with. He just remotely reset the modem. It didn't do a damn thing. We'll see what he says next, if it's not helpful I'm asking him to escalate.
It's a text chat BTW, not phone. I avoid phone support at all costs.
How can I find out if my laptop has a blutooth?
it is hp elitebook 8540p
With a text chat, don't you get disconnected if the computer, network, or router gets disconnected? That's one issue I've had with Brighthouse chat in the past.
It somehow magically comes back to the same chat
The phrase "creepy magic" comes to mind...
> The Analyst is typing...
OK. To his credit, he's now said that I should contact their level 2 support. But, he gave me a phone number... which inevitably means sitting on hold and having to try to understand a thick accent :(
23:37
I'm good at pattern matching in general, so unless the accent is REALLY thick, my brain adapts pretty quickly, and I comprehend.
I remember in High School having one teacher that I understood clear as a bell and others never did understand.
Bob
Bob
@killermist I was lucky with my ISP last time :P
Went through the basics, but they never ask or bother me about my internal network setup.
Was never asked to connect directly to the modem, etc..
Ugh. The "direct number" was not direct at all. MR CHAT MAN. PLEASE DO THE NEEDFUL.
Bob
Bob
Of course, being on the modem statistics page and reading out the modem's connected time and noise ratios might have something to do with that...
But, that was second year Algebra, and I slept through most periods, woke up at the end, saw what minor new thing was added to previous rules, and absorbed it. Then on tests, I completed in about half the period, then went back to sleep. End of the period, a large number still hadn't completed the test.
@JANORTS Wouldn't HP support websites have that information?
