2:39 AM
@JourneymanGeek ? :S

Another hooray for "have you tried to turning it off and on again?"

Bob
@TomWijsman s/to turn/turning/
and s/on and off/off and on/
(sorry, I can't see that without reading it in Roy's voice)

(fixed)
So, here's what I was doing:
1. Install a shared printer on my client.
2. It asks for a password (while I haven't set up any).
3. Added the necessary stuff to network connections and made sure the right services are started.
4. Turned the server upside down.
5. Still asking for password...

Bob
@TomWijsman s/to //
Can I have my pedant medal now? :P

6. Reboot and it works.
Another hooray for "have you tried turning it off and on again?"!
(pretends to not have typed that sentence already)
(pretends it is not late)

Bob
2:54 AM
@TomWijsman Now that I want to see.
Printers... urk.

@Bob It is not so cool if you know it is just an Intel NUC.
That's somewhat like flipping a burger, though with cables attached.

Bob
@TomWijsman Now I can picture you angrily shaking it.

Imagines cooking the Intel NUC like a burger if it ever breaks...

Bob
"Work, dammit, work already!"

@Bob There's a Taylor song for that.
But in the end it's the client that just needed a reboot.
'cause Windows likes to remember it needs a password when it does not...
(And yes, even after killing the sharing session of the user on the server)
Probably there is some way to clear the session on the client...

Bob
2:59 AM
@TomWijsman net use /delete *

@Bob That's ... empty.
net use are actual mapped resources.
Whereas the session is just a connection between the server and client.
For example, to list the shared resources that are available on the server...
Well, I guess "clear the session" boils down to restarting one of those services that's responsible for that connection.

Bob
@TomWijsman Nope. All SMB sessions should be listed in net use.

New connections will be remembered.

There are no entries in the list.

Bob
You can list available shares on a server anonymously, IIRC.
That comes up as a \\host\IPC$ remote in net use
Once you have authenticated, the remote will come up as \\host\sharename even if you're just listing shares.

It's empty though...

Bob
3:07 AM
Then you're not connected to anything at the moment.

Then why does the server list a session? Then why does the client remember the server needs a password (when it does not)?
(Well, I assume "What's printing?" dialog to make a connection through that)
@Bob: Hmm; not sure about the server session, but in "net help /view" I see the mention of a cache.

Bob
@TomWijsman The password thing - first, are you absolutely certain the server does not expect one?

@Bob Reboot fixed it, never filled one in; so, yeah.

Bob
Well, if you're checking net use after the reboot, that's a bit pointless isn't it?

But what I think that happened is: Client improperly set up, caches "bogus password need" for network computers, client properly set up, uses cache.
@Bob Before the reboot there wouldn't be used shared resources listed there as they're asking password to even be able to use them.

3:14 AM
Can't find room rules link... just gonna ask. I am running a local WAMP setup with default configuration. I would like to configure it so that my server side scripts can touch my work LAN. When these scripts run on the command line, they can use network hosts/databases but nothing can be found when ran through Apache. I don't need this visible from the network necessarily. Can anyone offer up any direction?

@gloomy.penguin Apache runs under a different user with different permissions.

Bob
@TomWijsman Not necessarily.
Disconnected shares can be stored. If the password situation changes, it might ask you again.

I updated the spot for user and group in the http.conf to match my username...? Where else can/should that be changed?

Bob
I don't know if removing the password works correctly in that case or not. I haven't tried.

@gloomy.penguin The properties of the service in services.msc is one place to look.

Bob
3:18 AM
@TomWijsman I don't think WAMP creates a service.
WAMP is a (terribly ugly) hack.

It makes it seem as if ... I'm not sure either.

I'm really just using apache out of it... with python. The whole thing is kind of a bunch of random things... it's just a proof-of-concept thing. Quick and dirty. Was trying to use what I could write fastest in.

Bob
@gloomy.penguin Yea, that's pretty much the purpose of WAMP. The problem is getting it to work :P

But the story remains similar ... I'd believe it would inherit the user and/or permissions from the WAMP process.

Bob
3:20 AM
Is Python running through CGI/FCGI?
@TomWijsman That's not how Apache works.

Bob
On Linux anyway.
On Linux, the main process runs as root to bind port 80, then hands off to workers that impersonate a lower-privileged user.
I assume it does something similar on Windows. Not sure though.

this will be moved to linux if it makes it to production... just fyi. I don't know what I'm doing with networking things to begin with... but especially not windows.

@Bob But we're on Windows; Apache can see as much as Windows allows you, it's not like it's going to exploit to see more than it should be able to.

So... it's a work LAN. Could it be.... an ldap issue? It's gotta be in the config. If the scripts run fine on the command line.... Apache probably isn't aware of the larger network...?

3:22 AM
But yeah, it resorts to what is in the config...
But it could be the case that the process is differently privileged than what is in the config.

the error is a regular oracle "cannot find host" error, i'm assuming from the db driver that the python is using

Bob
@TomWijsman I believe httpd does a similar thing on Windows.

Consider a scenario where WAMP / Apache is NETWORK SERVICE and u set up your user in Apache's config; it won't be able to impersonate your user, neither is the NETWORK SERVICE given permissions to the folders you've set up your user as.
@Bob For that to be the case the services / processes need to start as SYSTEM; guess that's something we should look into first, because it's too much of a guess right now. :D

Bob
@TomWijsman That's exactly what it does.
And also what I expected, really.

hmhmmmmhmmmm.......... so I didn't bring my laptop home bc I have some scheduled stuff during the night. Didn't think I would get bored enough to continue looking into this tonight.

Bob
3:26 AM
Also, looks like user impersonation is only enabled on unix... huh.
Gimme a min.

So... I need to ensure that whatever/however Apache is running, I need to ensure that user/group has my permissions....... are we sure this is a permissions issue? Could it be anything else?

Bob
Hm. Windows doesn't require administrative privs to bind to lower ports.
Interesting.

@Bob Things would be better if we could just expect the Windows mechanisms to be used; so yeah, a hack.

Bob
@TomWijsman (@gloomy.penguin) You were right about the service.
I wasn't seeing it because I had the window open before the installation.
(Odd... could've sworn it was opened after. eh.)
There is a wampapache. Assigning a domain user account to that might work.
>
Create a normal domain user account, and be sure to memorize its password.
Grant the newly-created user a privilege of Log on as a service and Act as part of the operating system. On Windows NT 4.0 these privileges are granted via User Manager for Domains, but on Windows 2000 and XP you probably want to use Group Policy for propagating these settings. You can also manually set these via the Local Security Policy MMC snap-in.
Confirm that the created account is a member of the Users group.
Grant the account read and execute (RX) rights to all document and script folders (htdocs and cgi-bin

I wish I had it here.... I've watched wampapache in the task manager. Can't remember what it ran as. If I can get it running under my username, is that enough? or does it need to be something more dedicated?

Bob
3:32 AM
@gloomy.penguin Your user needs the service permissions.

Bob
Domain accounts by default are interactive-only.

sooooo.... by doing this, am I also making it visible to the network?

> The LocalSystem account has no privileges to your network via any Windows-secured mechanism, including the file system, named pipes, DCOM, or secure RPC.

Bob
Alternatively, you can just run httpd directly from the command line and ignore the WAMP stuff
@gloomy.penguin No, that's separate.

3:33 AM
would that work...? that was my next step. when I got frustrated.

Bob
The default WAMP config prevents access from other computers.
That's incoming access to appache.
Outgoing connections from a script will depend on the user, especially if you're talking to LAN computers.

@gloomy.penguin This question confuses me; are you trying to 1) have your scripts retrieve resources from the network OR are you trying to 2) have the network retrieve information from your scripts?

Bob
@gloomy.penguin Running manually? That should work and inherit all your user's permissions.

#1
@Bob - yes, running httpd manually

In that case, running through Bob's big quote should make it work.

3:36 AM
that's so nice...
thank you. last thing... so... I obviously need to read a fat wiki on these concepts. Any keywords you would suggest I go read up on?

(and instead of creating you could just confirm it's all set for your current account)

Bob
@gloomy.penguin If you just want it to work, read the Apache guide linked above.

i want to know everything in the world, though....

@gloomy.penguin A Google for "apache access network share privileges" gave me Bob's link as third result.
Guess some variations of that give a similar ranking.

k. awesome. thanks....! like I said, I can't try this out now but it definitely gives me a lot more to go on than I had before. I bookmarked the chat. Thanks again.

Bob
3:41 AM
...I found it by looking for apache user config on Windows :P

i searched for the wrong things.... "apache windows access lan" "apache windows access network"... it all came back about making it visible to the network.

It's somewhat a combination of "[subject] [operation] [medium] [configuration]"
@gloomy.penguin Windows / LAN / Network are too broad terms I think.

Bob
You do need to specify Windows
Just missing the share keyword

In your broad case it would yield #2 from my confusion question above more easily than #1.

one must always specify windows...

3:44 AM
Not necessary to specify Windows if you use Windows specific terms.

i'm learning. thanks for helping. i'm going to wander away now... my sister and her boyfriend got pizza.....
it's calling me. (the pizza)

But yeah, it can help a lot.
@Bob: Another fun thing I'm noticing is my Chrome displaying "First use..." in the upper right corner, I guess it's another new feature I've been missing announcements about.
OK, got it to display my name FWIW. :D
Guessing this might be useful to create different sessions more easily...
Hmm, no, needs you to login. bummer So, only actual person switching.
Scratch that! I do not have to login, as it is a different session; awesome!

Bob
4:21 AM
@TomWijsman :| I wouldn't know, I don't use Chrome :P

2 hours later…
6:39 AM
woof
Got ttrss's mobile client set up on my phone during lunch ;p
Next, IRC, but I'm not sure which channels/servers I need, and if Androirc deals with connecting to the same server multiple times well, annnnd my usernames and passwords for it.

Bob
now if only I could write my essays like I can write SU answers -_-

Bob
I just start writing and boom, several hundred words.
Meanwhile... agonise over essays for days :\

I feel like that at work some days ;p

Bob
Got a user here with a suspicious proxy :\

Q: Unicode doesn't work on big sites. Using windows 8

SheenaI get Ă¯Â¿Â½ or a question mark in a diamond. What does it mean? It does it on both chrome and firefox.

6:47 AM
How do you know its a suspecious proxy?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek See comments.

ah hah!

Bob
Ive noticed it on several sites, but main one im on is valoria.infinite-muse.com/index.php?act=idx Also i dont have any web proxies running, but my wireless automatically sets a proxy according to my network settings and i dunno how to stop it — Sheena 46 mins ago

I'll poke at it at home ;p

Bob
> my wireless automatically sets a proxy according to my network settings and i dunno how to stop it
!!!
Also, I'm preeeeeetty sure that's what's mangling the text.

6:49 AM
hm. If it was someone tech inclined I'd try tor or ssh tunneling to rule it out

Bob
@JourneymanGeek If s/he could come into chat, I'd walk them through that.

Not enough rep no?

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Unregistered too :P
Hm. Mind if I mention that to them and link to your chat message?

sure
and suggest she registers. It should allow invites methinks

Bob
(As suggested by @JourneymanGeek) You could also try the TOR Browser Bundle - not permanently, but it would allow us to confirm or rule out the proxy or other network filtering as being the issue. You could also register an account here and join us in chat for more extended troubleshooting/guiding - comments and answers aren't really suited for a lot of back-and-forth, unfortunately. — Bob 1 min ago

6:53 AM
Yeah
I miss operator :/

Bob
@JourneymanGeek Operator?

(opera based tor bundle. Was a single executable, so I used to just link folk to it to test)

Bob
Ah.

I think it stopped being maintained ages ago
Man, long lunch today

Bob
o.O
Speaking of - I need to go home.

6:55 AM
XD

Bob
"Can you send us a screenshot of the error?"
Someone later... receives photo of the screen
-_-

This is more common than not
Man, I love chrome remote desktop

Bob
JIRA comment formatting is weird.

I found it ok
Its vaguely markdown-like.

Ugh. Train is delayed
I just wanna go hoooooooome
I prolly should pack a heavier lunch/and or get lunch near work

Bob
@JourneymanGeek welcome to working life :P

Lol, yeah.
I love the job (tho stuff occasionally confuses)
Also, the pay doesn't hurt

Not bad, even if its older
Tho that processor and a h61 chip set is wierd

Bob
ya
the proc attracts people, I guess
most don't look at the chipset
it's a decent box
could do well as a home server, actually

I'm kinda curious how the systems at work compare

Bob
if you wanted the compute power

Yup
I guess its OK if you don't wanna go sli?

12:52 PM
Hello fellow humans
(and other assorted fauna)

Fellas, feeeeellaaaaas!
I need a software recommendation on a SIP capable client for VOIP
anyone into that? :)

Wow, 2 hours pass in the blink of an eye

How do I use it? imagemagick.org

WHO'S MESSING WITH THE FLUX CAPACITOR?!
;P

12:56 PM
@Boris_yo Invoke a command shell and invoke imagemagick

@NoneOfYourBusiness It has to be assembled from source code?

@ThatBrazilianGuy Sorry, I roasted an egg on it..
@Boris_yo Then do sudo configure && make && make install

@NoneOfYourBusiness Nah. Too long to learn programming.

or just use apt or whatever packet manager your linux has

12:58 PM
apt get install imagemagick
*apt-get install imagemagick

TIL sudo configure && make && make install is programming. OMG I've been a programmer all this time!!!

haha yeah I was like WTF too :D

Time to update create a StackSE Carreers profile :P

Although tbh iirc I've just once compiled from source. Installing pacakges is much easier and enable updates. And even then there can be annoying hidden dependencies. =/
But ANYTHING is better than "next-next-OK in malwareland".

1:01 PM
@ThatBrazilianGuy Unless you use any unsafe mirrors, using apt should be fine.
After all, it DOES have super cow powers
god dammit why are there so many dicks on SE .. seriously

1:37 PM
@NoneOfYourBusiness Because there are people that help you pay attention on the tip of your toes. :)
@killermist: Feel free to continue here or (perhaps even better) in a separate chat room, if we continue there in parking style there will be too much noise in the comments. ;)
@OliverSalzburg: Well, I'm not planning to create a solution in a separate Q&A on my own. It doesn't work trying to set this up in the blank, at least from prior experience; and putting up a good list as well of good text to convince takes up a lot of work, that's why hitchhiking a self-demonstrating Q&A is preferable in an attempt to get multiple (2-3) people together to craft a solution.
My intention is to stop after that 5th comment as I've got nothing more to make clear there and do not want to push the solution in that Q&A at all, just checking for interest.
Wishing there was some option to split off the parking discussion; it's a bit too verbose to take place there, but it should get us (killermist and me) to a consensus that's going to convince us (killermist and me) more than just those thoughts. As parkings are a real world example that's been extensively worked out, compared to a innovative Q&A site...
TL;DR: The information overload world we're in results in creating a lack of information (whether reading or writing it). Both ends of the spectrum is noise... :)
(The opposite [lack -> overload] can be true as well)

2:13 PM
@TomWijsman Understood :) I think I got your point
Personally, I enjoy questions like the one in question (…that sounds weird)
I'd enjoy it if we had more of those and they would be in a generally accept form

@OliverSalzburg Yeah, I think it depends very much on the question; some are plain wondering, other have an actual problem underneath and can be salvaged. Some example on SO I've found that illustrates how such type of question can work:
Sometimes it is not obvious; another example question Why did organization X create framework Y? might seem curious and subjective at first, but might be a vital part of the OPs ability to understand the difference between the frameworks and decide between them. @Braiam you found a pic of @Bob's wife and son?
