Q: friend who recently passed away

Christine YamasakiI will make this short and to the point. I had a very good friend who recently passed away, and I found this out by accessing his fb! Wow..i was logging on to communicate with him, not to say goodbye! With this said, I would like to know if fb has any ideas or possible affiliations with assista...

@slhck ah yeah @tombull89 said the same ;p
12:05
i can't see that :(

@Sathya what?! too bad it's deleted -_-
unrelatedly, this class is very managagery :(
@slhck @tombull89 @JourneymanGeek webcache.googleusercontent.com/…
(not sure if it works.. for some reason that link's blocked)
eh, she must have in confused with yahoo answers ;)
The funny thing is, Facebook actually manages these sort of things
12:07
@slhck Yeah, I think you can set up some sort of "memorial" page.
Also, when I googled the question link there was no cached result in google's servers :/
@tombull89 Chrome FTW!
put in cache:<url> in the omnibox & it'll fetch the cached version, even if the search doesn't return it
leaving office, back later!
chocolate donut, y u so small?
Meh, I've recently moved from IE to FF...maybe I should think about a Chrome VM
@slhck: that's taking a while to load....
@slhck Y U NO GIVE ME?
//out
12:10
@tombull89: why not just install it? its not that heavy
/me runs canary as a secondary browser since i have to balance two seperate sets of everything @ all ;p
@JourneymanGeek The canary is actually quite good since a few months. Before that it used to crash on me every day, but now it's awesome.
@slhck: the crashyness is half the fun ;)
lol
i think usually its the sync part that messes up
Sync is a bit weird. Sometimes it syncs back stuff I've already deleted (e.g. bookmarks, add-ons)
12:19
hello anyone free got a problem with paypal !
@HackToHell Not currently, why?
Grumpy grawity is baaack. "Blank media (CDs, DVDs, MP3 players) will be delivered to UK only", says Amazon. I assume that applies to flash drives as well? :/
@slhck WTF does paypal automatically withdraw money to my Bank Account that has not yet been verified !
yet !
@HackToHell How much? From stuff you ordered?
@grawity Taxes, same crap as usual
I can't even order blank CDs from Germany to Austria (!)
20 $ ... now after reversing the transaction I have got 5$ !
12:21
@HackToHell Can you be more precise? Did you order something?
No !
Here's the whole story .
I do not use PayPal at all when buying stuff , I always use my Card .
My friend compelled me into opening one and I had 20 $ transferred from him to me ... and I decided to add an Bank Account to get it as that is mandatory in India
yup
My Bank had some problem with NetBanking and told me it would not be possible so I decided to add another one
I deleted the one i had haded
but yet it was there
okay, still following, go on
I have not yet added another bank account ..... but then I get a mail saying PayPal automatically set my money to the bank so I log in and find the transaction and reverse it . and I get 5$ back ? !!
The money has been sent to the bank account I deleted and the transaction was marked as not done
12:26
I don't know why they would automatically send it to the bank account
Foul Play ?
I'd say contact their customer support. This is totally out of my experience with PayPal.
ok gonna call them thanks :)
Sure! They're normally very helpful when it comes to fraud – but I don't know about your case, so, sorry!
Great that they invented Full HD, because this resolution is small...
Does anyone know how I pin Firefox to the Windows 8 start menu?
Or however that Metro Tile screen is called...
And is it me or do none of the apps work?
12:34
Hmm...In Jeff Atwood's Coding Horror post about re-building his computer he's gone for a Asus P8Z68-V PRO Motherboard. What I want to know is, what's the difference between the Pro and the Asus P8Z68-V, apart from £10 and 2x extra 6GB/s?
@JourneymanGeek dammit. too much markdown.
@tombull89: its there, 2-3 screens down
>_>
where?
er...
@TomWijsman: scroll down, find the tile 2-3 screens down, drag it into position
Hm. Is there any sort of website or article describing how/when certain types of credit cards can/cannot be used online?
also, the only non worky app for me so far is copper
@grawity: depends on your bank, most likely
12:37
@JourneymanGeek That isn't the only thing... It puts it in a "fluc" state! I think either they have heavily restricted the preview for the demo, or, the start menu is only in their for compatibility reasons and it won't be in the final version... if you do winver, it also has a warning there which makes me think it is more about the preview... I blogged about it yesterday morning... blog.williamhilsum.com/2011/09/…
for example, if a website says "Visa", does it usually include Electron?
@JourneymanGeek Blergh.
@grawity You should check with your bank, definitely
Aha, I'll try :/
@WilliamHilsum: they have explicitly said there will be a 'legacy' desktop mode.
@JourneymanGeek Did they actually mention start menu though :/ ?
12:39
no, they said explorer
however the context switching in this build is ... quite jarring
@JourneymanGeek Nope, I did both the pins in the right click menu of Firefox.exe.
Scrolled all the way to the right, I see it nowhere...
@TomWijsman: pinning via rightclick will click it on the legacy taskbar
you need to DRAG it into place
How do I properly pin it then?
Clippy is effective these days...
click, hold, pull.
@JourneymanGeek I'm missing something there.
I have Firefox.exe sitting in a map on my disk...
12:41
@TomWijsman: map? >_>
Now how do I get that into the Metro Tiles Start Menu thing?
E:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
it should automatically go there
but further down
Automatically?
scroll 'down' or to the right, and there should be a series of tiles for legacy apps
yup
i might have a screenshot
So if you start a legacy app it gets automatically added?
Store does nothing, the 6 big tiles (BUILD, ...) do nothing, is that normal?
The last two pages do nothing, remote desktop does nothing.
in the gigantic one those work
... all those work for me
I have the gigantic one, should I reboot?
no, they should work >_>
How exactly do I have to click on these things, just left mouse button?
12:44
yes
@JourneymanGeek: Well, guess I'll install NVIDIA drivers and do a reboot...
Because I do have the gigantic one.
And VHD worked because Windows 8 overwrote my boot loader...
Which means, that I can't boot into my Gentoo anymore. :(
I hope I can find a way to chainload it.
@JourneymanGeek: Okay, drivers fixed it. Got to install my Dvorak lay-out customizations next because I'm creating a lot of typos...
@WilliamHilsum: Has a way been found to close the Plane application, or is Task Manager the answer?
12:49
@TomWijsman: installed drivers for an unrelated reason in my case.
how are you guys installing Windows 8 ? VirtualBox or a side by side install ?
how well does it go with grub ?
@HackToHell: dedicated, physical system ;p
@HackToHell I did it in VirtualBox 4.1.0, worked fine for me.
Then I got home and put it on a spare laptop.
@HackToHell Easiest way for me is just doing a VHD install.
@JourneymanGeek :)
VHD , VirtualBox I will go with VirtualBox
12:52
There is also a tutorial so that you can install it straight from the ISO without DVD/USB, but I didn't bother with that...
@HackToHell Why so, VHD isn't virtualised...
well it involves a complex process right .. and i tend to mess up
And cool, I can run StarCraft II without problems. :D
Now I just make a junction point to my folder on Windows so replays come in the same place for both OSes.
@HackToHell Not at all.
@TomWijsman any tutorial for that ?
@TomWijsman: i can't even get HL2 working. I ended up using an older driver since the latest nvidia drivers don't seem to work properly with the utterly crappy card this system has
12:54
That's if you need to put it on an USB if you can't get it on a DVD.
In the Disk Manager in Windows 7, you can create a dynamically sized VHD of 60 GB or something.
@TomWijsman hanselman.com/blog/… this makes it look complex !!! I have never VHD'd before
Then you boot from the installer.
and it will show the vhd ?
@HackToHell Holy long page name, batman!
And the only hardest part which is pretty easy is to hit SHIFT+F10
Figure out where the VHD is by typing in the drive letters, like C: to H:
12:56
@tombull89 lol
@TomWijsman okay i am gonna do that .. instead of creating a partition
and then type DISKPART, then SELECT VDISK FILE="H:\Path\To\My\vhd.vhd" then ATTACH VDISK
and then you refresh and you can install to the VHD, remove your installation medium upon reboot, done.
What versions of Win 7 do you get the ability to make VHDs?
@HackToHell Same thoughts here, it even works on Windows 7 Professional which doesn't support VHD booting.
Because it updates the boot loader, that's pretty awesome...
@TomWijsman how do i create it the gui way ?
@HackToHell The really awesome thing is that the VHD is dynamically sized.
12:59
Disk Management?
like in VirtualBox :)
@HackToHell Yes, then in File you can create the VHD, select GB then type 60 or so and make it dynamical.
ok
it installed vhd hba that seemingly makes it work ...
How do I mount it ?
No need to mount it in Windows 7
It is asking something abt my MBR what should I give ?
hehe... Alt F4 worked in the end...! :) ...
I am not sure why it didn't work at first - I think gremlins in the beta, but, alt f4 works in all apps for me now.
13:04
You don't need to do anything except creating the VHD, HackToHell. I didn't get that dialog...
I hit the cancel ... :)
Just click Cancel would be the best option, I guess.
I think it adds it as another HDD to my boot table (MBR) ... researching ....it can be got by right clicking my Disk 1 (the VHD ) and selecting initialize disk ...
@WilliamHilsum: on the metro apps?
@WilliamHilsum Not here yet, my ALT TAB is filling with things. xD
13:07
@TomWijsman alt>tab>tab>tab>tab>tab>fml>tab>tab>tab.
@HackToHell No, that just means you can initalize the VHD with a MBR on it.
But the setup does that stuff for you.
So, you don't explicitly need to do it here...
Does anyone know if VHDs support Linux?
or linux supports VHDs...
@TomWijsman oh ..
@JourneymanGeek Hmm, that'll probably be the problem.
SHIFT+F10 and locating where you stored, then that screenshot, then a refresh of the disk window with F5, is all you have to do different from a normal installation.
@JourneymanGeek Yep and @TomWijsman all I can suggest is if it is a VM, suspend reopen, or if that doesn't work or it is a real machine, restart.... For me, alt+tab, Alt+F4 were not working at all... after a restart, everything is working fine and as expected, it is weird and I have no idea why
13:10
And use " characters around your path if it contains spaces.
@WilliamHilsum: i've restarted it quite a few times
@WilliamHilsum Yeah, it looks to me that the first boot is extremely buggy.
I think if I start Firefox again it will get seen by the start menu...
@JourneymanGeek Sorry, not sure then :(
@WilliamHilsum: tis ok. there will be updates!
Wait, I think that I know what's up with Firefox.
It gets legacy apps from the old start menu, right?
Well, I'm running a compiled version so it's obviously not in the start menu... :D
13:13
ahh
Hmm, wonder what User Tiles is for in the User Folder.
pfft
that's not something most people would guess ;p
all of you guys are in Win 8 ... darn I still have an hour left on my download :(
Okay, placing a shortcut in that folder does nothing, it probably needs to be in some kind of new tile shortcut format or however that works.
Does anyone know the Start Menu folder's location out of their head?
Nevermind, got it.
13:16
@HackToHell: i started dling the moment it was out + i used axel to speed it up
somewhat ironically
Took only 20 minutes for me, but had to wait til now to install it.
@JourneymanGeek axel ? and i was asleep when it was out and the dll ran alnight yesterday and it is not yet complete !!!!!!!!
I don't see how a download accelerator is going to improve the speed...
@HackToHell: linux cli download accelerator
@JourneymanGeek I use uTorrent to boost my speeds
@TomWijsman sometimes MS speeds suck
13:19
well, there was no torrent at the time
but i think i went from 250 kbps to 4 mbps ;p
4 Mbps ! I am downloading at 70 kbps ...
and my stupid isp limits it to 40 in the night ..
yes in theory ...
yesterday, by Tom Wijsman
5.1 MB/s here.
cable in my case
tho i could have used the office ADSL if need be
13:21
It's a direct download, there are no mirrors. How can it go any faster with an accelerator?
this is India guys ! ask Sathya ...
@TomWijsman multiple connections
@HackToHell That's more likely to slow it down to speed it up...
Unless you have a per-connection speed limit if that even exists.
Which I don't have as far as I know rather than the overall speed limit.
But okay, it might make sense that way.
@JourneymanGeek Just curious .. how come I see you all day here :)
U come here frm office ?
superuser.com/questions/275894/… wow this question is cruelly good :)
@TomWijsman Don't know if you saw my link yesterday... just you wait... hyperoptic.com (crossing my fingers it will come to me... but looks like they are only going to be in new build apartments for the time being :( )
@WilliamHilsum Nice, we got 100 Meg here.
13:30
@TomWijsman u work at a datacenter or something ?
@TomWijsman Lucky you :( ... It is sad, but, when I saw that web page, I got so excited... I am on 10-15Mb here, and I just hope that gets launched here... I will switch so quick to it!
@HackToHell Home. EuroDOCSIS 3.0 connection...
@WilliamHilsum Static IP and "unlimited" downloads? WANT EVEN MORE.
@TomWijsman proably costs hell
Meh, weather is only in Fahrenheit.
13:37
Wats Windows 8 official logo ?
WP7-ish.
13:57
With which program do you want to open this .html, nice...
dammit. I'm trying to clean my glasses but it's not making them any better.
No, clippy. Go away.
14:22
hahaha Duke kicks ASS!
14:43
GlobalInbox now has sends emails
@Sathya ah, spotted that the other day and completely forgot to click on it >.<
would be handy except I'm here every day anyway
@HackToHell: i usually have a computer on. I'm not necessarily at it
@DMA57361 yep..

Q: How to run Windows 8 dev preview on native hardware without burning?

badpThis blog post explains how to use the diskpart utility on the Windows 7 install DVD/USB to create a virtual drive you can mount and install Windows onto. At next startup, you’ll see Windows 7 in the boot menu! Is this still possible with the Windows 8 dev preview DVD? Can I do this without...

the pieces are mostly all there, now make a nice comprehensive answer of the whole shebang!
sounds like maybe what @TomWijsman was messing about with earlier... Tom?
I'm too lazy for that - just shove it in a VM, look at the pretty colours then forget about it
I know a friend who tried, it won't work in Virtual Box
... I've got it working of Virtual Box
fine. jeez. :(
I guess the issue is he was using Linux
17:24
it's running right this very second :)
could be, or hardware? or something else? there's a lot of factors here I think
anyway, I've food to eat, bbl
@badp I'd check if APIC, VT-x, 2D & 3D acc is enabled for VirtualBox
@badp also, this is the blog post @TomWij mentioned earlier
17:57
Yup, you can even make the VHD from the DVD using diskpart.
But if you use Linux and have no FAT/NTFS store, that's probably the problem...
18:39
@TomWijsman Did you see my link the other day to the mario portal thing?! I wonder if they are linked or just a funny coincidence!

Posted by Alex Miller on September 15th, 2011

For the past couple months, we’ve had a new team starting up out of our NY office, CHAOS (or if you’re not into that whole brevity thing: Cheerful Helpful Advocates of Stack Exchange).  You’ve probably seen them around some of the sites or run into them in one of the chat rooms – but here’s your official introduction:

CHAOS works directly with Joel and me to come up with, and execute on, new ways to promote all of the new SE sites and bring in new users.  Looking at the original job posting we put up, you can get a bit of a feel for what they’ll be doing: …

Looking for a replacement for Alcohol 120%. Prefer an opensource one and/or one with a minimal interface/gui. Any ideas?
What did Alcohol 120% do that the inbuilt Windows tools won't do?
@SgtOJ I have been using Slysoft Clone Drive for the past few years... not open source, but, works well... slysoft.com/en/virtual-clonedrive.html
@WilliamHilsum Thanks. Will try it out.
@badp I have own Alcohol 120% since my XP days. I continued to use with Vista and 7. Since I bought a licenses, if figure I will use it. Now, I am looking for something that is minimal and does everything it did.
19:29
And I asked, what is it that it did that Windows doesn't do
otherwise I can't suggest you
I don't remember the file types but I ran in to some image file type that it wouldn't open. Also mounting. I want mounting.
20:14
Does that look like spam to you?

A: Need Software to Monitor Internet Uptime

Dave BeckerI looked for a program to do this myself - for months! So many choices, all too complicated or expensive. Just found http://www.netuptimemonitor.com. This program just does one thing - the exact thing that you want! It monitors your internet connection, alerts you when it's down and writes a p...

Definitely... I flagged it. @slhck
@SgtOJ Neat, I <3 community spam flags
Registered to the dude who posted
lol
neat, have to remember that @Mokubai
20:23
Gotta love the fact that you can find out who owns a domain
Well I'm absolutely for that. If you didn't have to register with your address / name, the internet would be a much scarier place than it already is.
Dang was just about to post a helpful comment as it got locked
The guys other answer is slightly better.
@Mokubai It's because Gareth edited it
I'm gonna flag it anyway
Gareth edited quite a few Spam posts to make them look nice and shiny :P
Left my helpful comment as well. Yay me!
nice, thanks @Mokubai
woah wth
Keyboard shortcuts. ^^
I just pressed Enter O_o
@TomWijsman That looks potentially lethal
@TomWijsman Ahh.. Is the script broken?
I remember just updating it
20:36
The Health and Safety Guy in my head was stricken silent in horror...
Dunno, perhaps your enter made it type out the tag thing. Sounds unreasonable, well, I don't know what could have happened...
@Mokubai Yeah, kinda. Think these are professionals though...
@TomWijsman O_o christ, that was rather close with the dog @ ~0:37
@DMA57361 Oh right, I forgot that...
@TomWijsman crazy, you can't really do anything other than watch it to the end!
That second video made YouTube suggest the first one.
20:45
Those races always remind me of this one level in MW2
What is Haali Media Splitter?
or should make it a SU question?
@SgtOJ software that enables thumbnails for all video files on Windows I guess
@SgtOJ I can explain what it is, it'll just take a while...
actually it's a directshow filter, now I see
never used that really
It's more of a directshow splitter, it sits above the actual video and audio codecs
20:53
@slhck Me nether. I am looking for something to show MKV thumbnails.
Will it show MKV preview thumbnails? @Mokubai
@SgtOJ Try the DiVX Codec pack, it enabled mkv thumbnails for me
@Mokubai okay
@Mokubai Thanks.
I can't update my version of it at the moment as it breaks the audio in my mkv files, think my computer needs a reinstall, something is bugged.
Something about the filter chain is f*cked, and updating divx seems to kill the ffdshow codec that knows how to handle vobis audio
which is weird
I don't think the divx pack is the actual problem though
That is what I just did. I did a complete reformat and install of Ultimate. I am trying to prepare my computer for its initial backup image. @Mokubai
I envision a world where every video codec is patent-free and open-sourced, and every OS has native support for every codec.
21:00
@slhck Sounds like a nice place...
@slhck LOL. I do not share your vision. I wish it, though.
It's a royal PITA, really.
Software patents are a retarded idea anyway
"Hay, I can haz a patent on how ewe uze ur fingurz to 'touch' buttunz on a skreen!" Apple Patent Lawyer (official application)
I mean, how ridiculous is it to sue Samsung for making a tablet thin and a rectangle? Should they make it a triangle and extra fat?
And Nokia for coming up with a GSM radio first, and HTC for daring to use touchscreens at all
21:04
In fairness Microsoft is at it too.
And next they'll sue the bible for using the name "Job" as one of it's characters
lol
@SgtOJ Yeah, but they're more likely to buy their rivals than sue them
Seriously.. Nokia had that patent on "how to reduce battery consumption" on a mobile phone, and guess what they got the patent on? Reducing the CPU voltage!
WOW, genious!
Yep. Or agree to sort of payment plan. I heard that Microsoft is making $15 for every Android sold.
If I owned the patent office most applications would be rejected with a little note saying "stop being a retard and make something. kthxbai!"
Nice infographic for you guys!
Very nice
:D makes it nice and clear who's suing who!
@BloodPhilia Nice graphic yeah :D
Anybody knows how I get "fixed" cells in Excel?
Like one column that stays fixed while you can scroll the others?
21:13
@SgtOJ Did the DiVX pack do any good? Just curious if I reinstall my compy whether my video will be playable...
Just finished it. Right now, no.
@slhck check either just above or below the scroll bar for a really small bar, you can drag that to set the "fixed" area
Might be what you're after
@Mokubai Ah.. well I'm on a Mac here, and when I drag these, I kinda split the window
Might be that you can only "fix" the top or left hand area iirc...
So ideally, I'd only have column A fixed and the rest scrollable, but that splitting should do as well
21:17
Or I might be misunderstanding, it does kinda split the areas
Found it!
-.- Mac stuff looks weird.
Mac Office looks weird!
It's like it's almost got the Office Ribbon that I know and kinda like, and put those old gray buttons on it....
yeah, it's really ugly
I don't even want to use it, but … I don't have a choice
21:28
Wow, looking through Google Images for for the Mac version of Office makes me happy I've only used it on Windows. It's like they took the liveliness and usability of the Ribbon and then gave it a grey, boring, corporate-drone style makeover
The little "jelly" buttons in the corner are the most colourful parts of the window...
Still it's better than what they had before (i.e. 2008)
The thing is, they didn't take the usual frameworks you would use for creating apps on a Mac, but partially rolled their own stuff. Which makes it worse than any cross-compiled Java app.
You can't even use the default keyboard shortcuts.
Oh the joys of application porting...
Yeah, Office for Mac was ported straight from hell.
:D
21:35
Anyway, it is late.
Have fun y'all!
you too, see you @Mokubai
@slhck G'night :)
22:29
Office 2010 is nice!

1 hour later…
23:31
@SgtOJ: cccp does it. if you use an intel video card with vista or better, take a look at this imouto.my/watching-h264-videos-using-dxva-clearvideo-version
