morning
00:50
@JourneymanGeek hey! Know anything about circuits?
you don't happen to know if I can reduce the resistors into one do you?
I'm just having a dickens of a time approaching it
the problem is the split power sources
00:59
ya.. and that 2OHM resistor in the middle is giving me the probs
eh, i could have done this easily 8 years ago ><
lol...
there's something about that circuit that bothers me, but i can't tell what.
(last time i did physics in school)
ya this is what I get for deciding to do an EE minor at the last minute
01:13
@KronoS are you looking for something like the Thevenin or Norton equivalent?
that would reduce it to a single source + resistance though
@KronoS ... It has been years since I last used it, but... I used to use Crocodile Clips to muck around with basic circuit design as it has a good simulator... just had a look and they merged it to a new product called yenka which is now free... yenka.com/en/Yenka_Science - you may want to have a muck around with that!
@WilliamHilsum thanks!
@sblair not sure TBH.... I'm trying to find the power supplied by the voltage sources...
I think that if I use KVL i might be able to accomplish this... we'll see though
01:39
@KronoS Really been ages since I did circuits (would love to get back in to it!)... I tried your thing, and, it blew the resistors! I love crocodile clips! (or yenka now!)
01:49
erf. I wish i understood web design >_>

2 hours later…
04:11
@KronoS oh jeez.. it's been over 5 years since I had a look at it >_>
04:57
gah
*fighting the temptation to add another answer to an olllld question for completeness/cool app sharage-es sake
if you want to close 'owt, I've posted two in the VTC chat room
what questions?
ha, UK slang for anything
superuser.com/questions/67207/how-to-join-mp3-files <- thinking of adding cuetools there once i have tested that it does what i need it to
05:04
looks like you've killed them already @Sathya ?
@Gareth yep
05:31
hmm, keep getting logged out of SU today
three times so far
eep
is that 3 or six times?
argh
I guess I know what my issue is then :S damn VPNs
loooool
apparently
05:33
bloody GFW!
hmm, lots of 'buying recommendation'/stale questions getting bumped today
yeah, sorry, it's me reuploading some images... I'm trying to VTC/flag to delete any shopping ones I spot
just bung any you spot in the VTC room and I'll join you with voting!
just added 1 there myself
@Gareth please, please don't edit if you're going to close them :|
it's not my intention to... I've said this a few times in the past
10k+ & mods have access to closed questions queue. I don't see why you're editing them if it's going to be closed :|
05:46
it's because I might just see an image, so I go and edit it, then suddenly see the question at the top
if I do edit, it's an accident, and I don't go through editing the rest of the answers
there would be no point in me spending the time editing if it got closed/deleted anyway
anyway, sorry if it's causing any grief. I'm done with my queue for today...
no worries. I'm voting to close those ;p
it was less a complaint than a statement ._.

1 hour later…
07:17
morning all
@slhck, @Gareth, @danielbeck, @bloodphilia you might want to take a look at the blog ;)

@Sathya you should @@ those ;)
that, and i sort of didn't expect the tag wiki thing ;p
@nhinkle oh but I have ;)
@Sathya wha? When I look (via edit) it doesn't show them as such. Huh. Well, good job then! :P
@nhinkle not all are @@'d - those people who visit the room - I haven't, rest I have.
shrug
as long as they see their winnage
lol. i think this is not going to work @Sathya :P
07:32

@nhinkle @JourneymanGeek if you notice the message - the names which are in lowercase, they are @@'d
well, barring few anyway :p

Q: iPhone virtual machine

flowI would like to run some iPhone applications on my MacBook and be able to use them with the mouse. Is there some way to run an iPhone emulator via Parallels Desktop or any other virtual machine?

@nhinkle: its spelled journaymangeek there
@JourneymanGeek hahaha ooops. will fix.
@tombull89: i don't think so. its in effect a software recommendation
@JourneymanGeek A-OK.
07:37
(IMO. I don't see anything wrong with VTCing it, but in effect, he's asking if there's a emulator/SDK he can use)
it's a valid question, since it's about using it on his computer
Hm. Twitter's over capacity. I guess @KronoS's announcement of our contest results overwhelmed it!
hey :) thanks @nhinkle and @Sathya :) It was all down to @Clippy really, though.
you know that 'hot' question we have about spicy media files and how to kill them
there's a reason it keeps bugging me
I eat so much spicy (Sichuan) food over here all the time (every day pretty much). Every time I come across that question it makes me think of sweaty old Chinese men
07:49
>.<
let's hope that's not what he's trying to delete!
XD. In either case, its better not to know ;p
btw, that message by Clippy about the winners might be one of the rare messages everyone loves :P atleast the winners ;P
07:52
lol
It looks like you're trying to downvote a MVSU nomination. Would you like a slap?
lolol
eh, I was a little miffed at that happening
Good morning
all water under the bridge I guess
hi @Daniel
07:55
till next year ;p
From SF Chat:
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH.
@tombull89 OH GOD MY EYES
hopefully by which time i can get more people converted to SU MWAHAHAHAHA ;p
what no picture?
eh, could be worse.
RED ON BLACK. WITH ANIMATED GIF FLAMES.
@Gareth Hi Gareth congratulations on making 3rd place ;)
the rest of their site dosen't look too bad
@DanielBeck ha thanks, and to you too indeed!
@nhinkle 10k only?
yeah we weren't really expecting a tie...
@tombull89 yeah. sorry.
actually that's not even the one
Well, it's that one, or yvettesbridalformal.
@nhinkle: could be worse. at one point, there were 4 people tied
07:59
meanwhile in the crappy website department, there was nelsonideas.com
Ahhh here it is: worst web site design ever? (10k only, sorry)
@nhinkle There's a bug in your blog post :P
@DanielBeck what's that?
(I'm sure there are. You know how many hours we spent figuring this all out? Well anyhow... there was bound to be some problem)
@tombull89: that website is what i'd use if i needed to torture a web designer. 5 minutes of it projected on a wall.. and anyone would cry for his mommy...
@nhinkle I'm a registered blogger but never actually came around to writing something ;) My post on OS X scripting and automation is still a work in progress...
@DanielBeck eh? You submitted it to the meta post didn't you? Or did you not?
08:03
@nhinkle I did, but that was my first post ever.
... intended for the blog
Oh, I see what you mean. OK well that's an easy fix.
hmm, I see that iPhone emulator one got migrated to AskDifferent in the end
I would have said it's on topic for SU but nay' mind
08:35
superuser.com/questions/333179/… I think the correct answer to that is "Yes"
darned kids, not appreciating the classics. All this newfangled linux and stuff...

dammit I keep forgetting I don't have edit privs on MSO and SF (without preer review)
neither do i >_>
actually, i have laughable rep elsewhere

hmmm, is out current hot question a dupe?

Q: Is it possible to run an old 16-bit DOS application under Windows 7 64-bit?

Here at work my new development machine is Windows 7 64-bit (so I can use extra memory and run VMs). However I have a dilemma: it appears that 16-bit DOS programs do not run under Windows 7 64-bit. I have an old legacy program written in Clipper that I need to run periodically. I cannot access ...

@Sathya yeah, that was all I could find... and I'm not entirely convinced by it
@DMA57361 why not?
I'm not entirely sure tbh
ah, the 2nd isn't strictly about 64bit, although no one answering seems to have noticed that
09:20
@DMA57361 hmm good point
@Sathya I just read the blog post! YAY, I finally get a SE Sharpie! - After last year, I laughed when I read your "Congratulations to the winners" comment at the bottom!

@slhck the way he goes, it won't be long before the question ban gets hit on him
Doesn't it just have a unique url at the top?
10:25
@Sathya Imagine the fury and bile that would be contained in a m.so post...I'd be almost impressed.
@tombull89 -69 in no time!
also, from the profile: Uh-Huh! You think you can figure me out. Well, yeah. He's a moron.
@Sathya is that the record?
@tombull89 that was an arbit number, -65 is the lowest I've ever seen
@Sathya guessing that's deleted?

How can we get a badge like the one in the left column on codinghorror.com/blog
Posted by Jeff Atwood on September 22nd, 2010

When we introduced user flair back in May 2009, we provided two ways to embed flair, either with an iframe, or JavaScript.

That may have been fine for a programming website like Stack Overflow, but it wasn’t so hot for … normal people. That is, people who do not live and breathe markup like us programmers. Embedding an <iframe> tag or <script> tag is complicated. It implies you run your own website, or otherwise have extremely low-level access to (and understanding of) the markup.  …

@Akash your network Flair? Goto your profile and click the flair tab in the bottom right
(You have to have at least 200 rep on a site for it to "count")
Thanks.. I didnt know it was called flair
yes.. Just crossed 200 a few days back.. Thats why I was looking for it

1 hour later…

hey @Breakthrough
14:25
@Sathya Wow, thank you! I checked the editor users subpage after the contest ended, so I expected the upcoming editor prize, but not the overall editor prize. Congratulations to everyone, especially @slhck!
@LordTorgamus you deserve it! The gang will be in touch with you about your prizes!
@tombull89 Yeah, Adam puts a lot of joke posts on Meta. The difference between him and everyone else is that he's actually funny.
14:45

Q: How to provide instructions to email printscreens of errors so easy a caveman could do it?

Doug ChamberlainI need to instruct individuals how to email issues to IT and include screenshots. They do things in very ridiculous ways, that "get the job done". So, I get emails that read. Do not know why this is happening, can one of you tell me how to fix? Every time I enter data and scroll or hit en...

seems more like a trianing issue
@Clippy could help him
That's a good one @Gareth
lol...
How can I provide instructions to email printscreens of errors so easy a caveman could do it?
eventually, Clippy.
Clippy, you slow bugger! the question's already closed!
we should get the Root Access chat SP1 installed
I tend to feel a bit guilty when I see my name on "question closed by"
14:51
you should see it positively - you're helping keep the site trim
@Sathya @WilliamHilsum that's awesome, thanks!
15:37
ooh
@tombull89: actually thanks to that, i learnt something new ;p
night all
16:22
Yes @Sathya
@Breakthrough oh, just thought I'll greet you, haven't seen you in here bfore
Ah, thank you sir
Kiedis looks weird with his 'stash
16:44
@DMA57361, @Sathya: Is the mail regarding prizes still to be sent?
@TomWijsman I've no idea, @nhinkle is looking into that I believe
Yeah, typo; a bit tired of exams...
Okay, given that the blog post has been up for quite a while (at least I don't see Wil's congratulation when scrolling) I thought the mail might've not reach me, but I'll wait as there is no hurry...
@TomWijsman the entry was up late last night US time
Yeah, I missed a lot over the last three weeks. But exams are over now...
So can be more active again! :)
17:38
@TomWijsman yeah we haven't gotten that far yet. Still working out some details. You'll get an email soon.
17:55
@JourneymanGeek you mean that Problem Steps Recorder? I stumbled across that by mistake. I know it's Win 7 only but it's still pretty decent (and idiotproof -_-)
lolwut.

Q: How can i deploy Ruby On rails Application in apache in lamp on ubuntu without installing Ruby and rails

MONYPlease provide me the guidance for deploying the ruby on rails application in apache in lamp without installing Ruby or rails .

18:28
@TomWijsman huh?
@WilliamHilsum: I wasn't here when you pinged me, and it isn't in the scrollback buffer.

@TomWijsman ahh, ok!
Does anyone know how Gmail uses my webcam without permission?
The other party can activate my webcam.
Webcam... In an e-mail web application?
Yes Google Talk
18:38
Yeah, Google Talk can do that if you have Flash auto-allow to use your webcam.
I don't know if other party sees me however.
So other party saw me?
Or is that a desktop client (because you got me confused by starting of with Gmail).
It is web interface.
However, by default you always need to accept something. There is no way in which you can send me an URL and you would be able to see through my web cam. Unless there is a yet undiscovered exploit floating around...
Do you have Gtalk?
I need to test this.
18:39
So much typos today, I'm tired...
@Boris_yo No, but I would suppose that it uses Flash.
I don't gave anything Google apart from Google Reader and Google+.
Eh well, I also have YouTube...
Never used Gtalk or Gmail...

Q: Weekend Planning

DD2Just on curious note. How we as a programmer plan our weekends for better productivity and work on hobby projects and improve their skills. My whole weekend goes in playing computer games and watching movies Any tips to improve my weekend for improving my programming skills

> Do you expect an answer other than "stop wasting your entire weekend on games & movies"? – Tom Wijsman

@TomWijsman Okay it seems that though webcam is activated, it needs your permission for other party to see it.

Q: How can I test my heatsink?

PublusIs there any way I can heat up my CPU and see if the heatsink works?

Im having a hell of a time setting up NAT forwarding with a ESX box... Does anyone know a program (if one exists) where I can load on my machine, load on the remote machine and basically type a port on both ends and just try to send something... just in order to test that the NAT rule works?
21:45
@WilliamHilsum What OS at both ends?
Ideally Windows as it is already configured, but, I don't care - just need to test NAT... outgoing works fine here, just need to test incoming, I can install any OS and set up a rule
@WilliamHilsum Incoming from the web?
I have never used PFSense (testing it as the firewall) and just not sure I am doing it correctly... the host has a weird setup which requires manual ARP/route setup... I have internet going out, but, I think I may have done something wrong on incoming
@TomWijsman That should work! :)
@WilliamHilsum Saves me some typing!
It tries to make a connection to the port, when it gets a handshake (TCP) or something along the lines of an ACK (UDP, not entirely sure) it will tell you that it works. So, you do need something listening at the endpoint...
21:51
I am trying to get the VMWare vCenter Mobile Access working.... I think the problem is with that rather than the firewall... just retested and, it doesn't work (as per manual) even from same network... (I installed a small XP machine inside the ESX server on the same network for testing)
In other words, opening the port alone isn't sufficient.
Not an HP server is it?
@Linker3000 Nope, not yet! Need to set up those HP Mini servers soon!
@TomWijsman That will hopefully be good enough!
OK - just a side note then - I was having problems with an ML330 server and to cut a long story short, they have two NIC ports but one doubles up (IP address wise) to talk to the ILO (Integrated Lights Out) remote admin controller in the server and if you use this as the main NIC for ESXi strange things happen - sometimes!
@Linker3000 Oh joy!!!
Just annoying - been doing so much desktop support in the past couple of years, I have hardly touched big setups and I feel out of my depth touching ARP and routes etc.
21:58
Well, while we're on the subject of desktop stuff and networks, the Netgear GS105E (note the 'E') 5-port gigabit switch sometimes responds to PINGs travelling through the switch to other kit. Tracking that issue down took a few hours. Fix is latest firmware.
@Linker3000 Is that a managed switch then?
@WilliamHilsum It has a few features like QoS and VLAN support - it's sort-of-smart. We didn't know when we bought 5, but my suspicions were raised when I noticed a MAC address on the bottom and wondered WTF a plain switch was doing with one!
@Linker3000 hehe, dumb-smart-switch!
2
I just got 4x 8 port Netgear gigabit switches for a client, I think they were just unmanaged... will check that out - thanks!
Also, many thanks both of you... got the thing working perfectly now! NAT is working and I did ARP correctly!!! Damn beta documentation! It says port 5480 on the appliance and in the documentation... but... just read through a load of forum items and it is actually using standard ssl/443 - opened that up and it works!
Glad it's working.
^ 3x 8 port not 4... and checked, they are just unmanaged/basic (gs108)
22:08
@WilliamHilsum Good - you're clear!
I'm glad it is fixed for you though... Netgear is one company I (sort of) trust... after you said that, I was a little worried!

1 hour later…
23:39
There is a PDF on this page, an article I was reading linked from Slashdot... and, as per the warning, it crashed my Chrome and Internet Explorer (tried it in both) - IE with Adobe Acrobat, Chrome with Chrome PDF viewer... It is the PDF you click on from this page - thenextweb.com/shareables/2011/08/17/… ... Just wondering how that is possible :/ restarted, clicked and it worked fine.
Yikes o.o
Eh voila, the hottest question on Stack Exchange is now closed as a duplicate. ^^
@TomWijsman Which question?
23:51
The next one is also a duplicate: superuser.com/questions/333103/…
Well with so many questions, i guess its bound to happen a lot
Seems it's better to write -d instead of -p if you want upvotes, or perhaps Getting rid is SEO-hot...
It probably wouldn't hurt to get rid of the SEO-hot
