the problem is that, every time the "history" starts to become actual history and stop being relevant, by letting time heal the wounds etc, something like that Ferguson shooting happens to revive the old hatreds
racism isn't absent from any particular place in the world, of course... but it is more prevalent in the midwest and south in the US, and less likely to survive in densely-populated areas like the mid-Atlantic and Northeast, because people of all creeds and backgrounds and ethnicities are everywhere and you won't survive long if you start going nutso
it's "easy" to live in a 100% white town in a place like Missouri, though
I hard the KKK being bonkers about this, and a report about Anonymous doing some facebook hacking too
Racism is horrible and I wish it would go away, but it's a really sticky issue that seems to persist no matter how much both sides try to heal it. There are thousands of people actively trying to solve the problem on a daily basis, plus the fact that the vast majority of the people are not racist at all, yet the issue continues to stew.
You won't solve it
I mean, I'm white, I rock big time in a band, our bassist is Barbadian
there was no statistically significant bias in my choice of friends in primary school, secondary school, university, etc. nor at work
Barbadion
Baradus
black
and he has similar opinions
that the problem is, you'll have haters
and you'll have lovers
and it doens't matter what colour you
naturally he mugged me after saying this he he he (BIG JOKE).
15:09
O_o
but yes, in USA, that many people you're going to get all types
I want a Keeshond now
Blood @JourneymanGeek tlaking about dogs
The Keeshond (/ˈkeɪz.hɒnd/ KAYZ-hond; plural: Keeshonden) is a medium-sized dog with a plush two-layer coat of silver and black fur with a ruff and a curled tail. It originated in Germany, and its closest relatives are the German spitzes such as the Großspitz, Mittelspitz, and Kleinspitz or Pomeranian. Originally called the German Spitz, more specifically the Wolfspitz, the name was officially changed to Keeshond, in 1926 in England, where it had been known as the Dutch Barge Dog. == Description == === Appearance === A member of the spitz group of dogs, the Keeshond in American Kennel Club (AKC)...

@allquixotic how much snow do you have?
huh? you want to know moare about the band?
OK I can tell you....
:)
@Psycogeek right now? none
Guys, can you remove IE totally from Win7?
Bob
Bob
15:13
@allquixotic Anything "must-see" for tourists in the area?
@Dave nope, it breaks too much stuff
@Bob in my area?
Bob
Bob
@Dave ...why do you want to do that?
I don't have IE on my computer anymore, some fool from Norton took over my machine when I had another problem and deleted it but was unable to reinstall it. Isn't that just marvelous? I assume you mean I should uninstall Chrome then reinstall it in safe mode? Sorry to be so duh. — Sharron Lehman 31 mins ago
he says it's happend to him
Bob
Bob
You can remove the user-accessible parts, but other parts of the system depend on components you might consider part of IE.
@Dave "some fool from Norton" => A/V scam phone call

@Bob do you mean the Maryland area? or Missouri?
Bob
Bob
15:15
@allquixotic Maryland.
My dad's heading over to the general area.
ah
@Bob hmm, plenty of stuff to see here, especially in DC, but I have a few ideas specifically for Maryland.
@Bob depends on his interests
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic He's mostly just sightseeing, I guess.
The NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center is here; they give tours sometimes, but I think you have to call (not sure on the details). They are the communications hub between the ground and space, so all astronauts-talking-etc gets routed through them :)
Bob
Bob
Tech museums would be nice :P
15:16
then there is the Smithsonian museum in DC, which is super neat
I think there's actually a space shuttle on display there
Since we're putting the world to rights, what about smoking
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Yea, he's more just hopping from place to place. Not much planning for specific locations.
@allquixotic I'll suggest that, thanks :)
@Bob there's something for everyone at the Smithsonian; it gets a lot of funding and has everything from dinosaurs to tech
I think I can help solve the smoking issue. The costs go up, the health goes down etc etc. They "want" to get rid of it. The problem is the cost.
Why does my idea fail (negative comments only please). Each year, increase the smoking age by 1. This way, no new smokers. As time goes on, less money form tax, but, less smoking related illness
if he'll be closer to Baltimore than DC (it's a little more than an hour drive between them), he might want to see Baltimore's inner harbor. it's nicer in the summer than in the winter (it's winter now) but there are still a bunch of great places to eat, and the Aquarium, which is fun if you like various types of fish held in captivity
if he's more of a nature type, and is going either soon (don't wait too long into the winter!) or waiting until spring (April at the earliest), he could get a boat tour of the Chesapeake Bay
super scenic -- the Bay was having severe "health" issues from pollution, runoff, etc in the past few decades, but we kinda saved it; not totally, but mostly

On somewhat related news, my dad will be in the US east coast in about 6 hours :P
ahh
how long is he staying? and I assume it's for business?
Bob
Bob
Thanks for the ideas.
@Bob well the airport is really nice :-)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Six days in the east coast. He took a month-long holiday to the US.
@Bob ohhhhh neat. so it is a holiday
Bob
Bob
15:22
Is that in or on the east coast?
yeah, if it's for fun I would definitely recommend going to the Smithsonian, and if he's really a geek, the NSA Cryptology Museum
Bob
Bob
Hm.
@Bob on, at least in American English
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Yea, I think the latter might be going a bit too far :P
if you were in the east coast, you'd be buried in the ground. just sayin'
Bob
Bob
15:23
...good point
is he with anyone here?
or just alone?
ahh
@allquixotic It has a Blackbird iirc
So wanna visit that
@HackToHell they rotate exhibits in and out
@Bob ahhhhhhh ;p
well. plenty of good restaurants for dinner in the area
Bob
Bob
Heh. I'm not quite comfortable suggesting that kind of thing. He'd probably figure it out himself anyway :P
:/
sorry to hear
15:25
@allquixotic oh so even if it's permanent ? airandspace.si.edu/collections/…
@Bob :/
@HackToHell ...no, not if it's permanent, just saying in general
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic It was coming for a while. Definitely not a surprise.
Hm. It's not even that recent anymore o.O
@allquixotic Then I totally wanna go see it ^_^
Bob
Bob
On second thoughts... delete
Hm. @JourneymanGeek would you be able to delete the message above allq's "ahh"? :P
...or did he go to sleep?
it would be nice if facebook could delete stuff
I read that @allquixotic :P
15:27
@HackToHell it can. delete your whole profile :D
Bob
Bob
hm.
That doesn't really remove the sent messages
I tried ;p
Bob
Bob
Ok. On one hand, need a mod. On the other, I really don't want to mod-flag that.
I hate PrivacyInvasionBook.
Depends on how you use it ;p
Bob
Bob
15:28
Oh whatever.
@Bob just put it on a post-it and bug the next diamond you see pop in chat ;p
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic It's probably indexed by now :P
:(
well at least you aren't ThatBrazilianGuy, who had his real name as his display name for like a year and has hundreds of @replies with his name in them, then decides one day OH CRAP I DON'T WANT ANYONE TO KNOW WHO I AM! D:
would be funny if a mod were like, 1953802 messages moved to Recycle Bin OK, Root Access is starting OVAR
The SE db would prolly hang up or something
nah, their DB is so fast that it could solve the Halting Problem ;)
15:50
@JourneymanGeek are silent installs a per-software feature, or is there any global sort of doing it?
@ThatBrazilianGuy per installer software. You might be lucky and be able to bodge something together to automate it tho
@Bob: could you post then delete what you need gone exactly?
Bob
Bob
thanks
ahh
its already gone, no?
Bob
Bob
What's gone?
the post you wanted gone ;p
I history purged it
Bob
Bob
15:57
@JourneymanGeek What post?

The one before "thanks"

Yeah, I missed that one. Buried it in the backyard now ;p

@allquixotic: To that I say...
I made that!
(more seriously, I'm applying to both 'soft' computer security jobs, and IT support)
This just happened to be 1) a company that was interested in me in the past 2) a field I've got some experience in.

@JourneymanGeek cleverly desguised sales job :-)
I heard google lets dogs in the office, could be you can apply for top intern dog.
16:23
who let the dogs in?!
@allquixotic google they got everything, free child care, huge wages, real benefits not ones you pay 80% for and get nothing, exercize rooms , the whole gammut. parking lot is full of BMWs and porches.

That will eliminate the problem… and the PC.

@allquixotic I doubt that, just like i think you will be a SU mod some day If You Want. you can run into shit headlong and get things that you might not think possible EX people kicked off american idol one year comming back and making it to the finals the next one.
or as robin williams would say 60% of sucess is being there ? wow lofty goal :-)
@Psycogeek nah; I'm built to live a mediocre and quiet life ;p
16:52
Or as george carlin would say f--- s--- m---f . . . oh never mind.
We didnt really want to hire you, but your a persistant bastard , so that's one good qualification.

I've installed [rex](www.rexify.org) on our Linux-based lab, so we can use batch commands. Boss tells us to change the passwords for the entire building, they make the trainee do this by hand in the lab.
I suppose it took quite a few hours, considering during work hours usually there are students using the PCs.
I wrote a simple rex script and it took about 40 seconds to change the password of all 30+ machines
Before I had heard of rex, it took me multiple hours to do that by hand (5 or 6 IIRC)
I can't imagine her face when I show her the script running (she missed work today)
Our boss is also making us install VNC on all the PCs in the building (I can see all the pichtforks and people accusing of eavesdropping in the future)
And planning a migration from transparent proxy to non-transparent. So we have to go to each account on each computer and change the connection settings. sigh.
I can't expect for the day we'll finally block port 80 and allow only the non-transparent proxy. The phone will ring like never ever before.
To be honest, I'm not really sure why we'll block transparent proxy. It has worked so far. Are there any big disadvantages to it?
@Bob The entire subreddit is both fascinanting and dreadful. Thanks for introducing me to it (I... suppose)
18:42
@ThatBrazilianGuy For the proxy thing, is this for Linux or Windows workstations? Cause we put the forced proxy in, and pushed out the setting to Windows workstations, if you want the code
@CanadianLuke Windows (Mostly 7, a bit 8 and a few [ugh!] XP)
One sec
netsh.exe winhttp set proxy 192.168.0.1:3128
IP address and Port number. Works for caching Windows Updates through Squid, as well
@CanadianLuke It was supposed to have been working since the beginning, but I suppose whoiever set it up didn't do it properly,
For the forced proxy?
The transparent one
@CanadianLuke Oh, and thanks for the script. How do I perform it remotely on 100+ machines?
/me googles netsh
!!wiki netsh
18:46
In computing, netsh, or network shell, is a command-line utility included in Microsoft's Windows NT line of operating systems beginning with Windows 2000. It allows local or remote configuration of network devices such as the interface. A common use of netsh is to reset the TCP/IP stack to default, known-good parameters, a task that in Windows 98 required reinstallation of the TCP/IP adapter. In this mode, a log file must be provided, which will be filled with what values netsh affected. netsh, among many other things, also allows the user to change the IP address on their machine. Starting from...
You can use the command line or Powershell, but I use PDQ Deploy from Admin Arsenal. It has a freemode, even!
The one thing you'll need to do on each computer though is run the following lines (remove `advfirewall` ONLY for the XP machines):

`netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="windows management instrumentation (wmi)" new enable=yes`
`netsh advfirewall firewall set rule group="file and printer sharing" new enable=yes`
I put those into the login script, then I logged in physically to each workstation to make sure the settings took effect
@CanadianLuke Our policy states we have to use free-as-in-freedom tools, or at least free-as-in-beer-for-commercial-use
18:48
PDQ has a free version. Use it
adminarsenal.com/pdq-deploy - They also have a program called PDQ Inventory, which I suggest getting
@ThatBrazilianGuy really? that's awesome. our policy is almost the reverse and I HATE IT
They made me uninstall SublimeText and even SmartGit

you should install GNU Hurd and stick it to 'em :D

@CanadianLuke are these free versions free for home use only or free for commercial use as well?
Because if so, it's quite interesting stuff
you know what's funny? Cavil's had his Christmas hat on since last Christmas and is going to be appropriately wearing it here in a few weeks :D
For commercial as well
18:56
@CanadianLuke ;____; thx bro
No problem. VOTE FOR LUKE IN 20xx SUPER USER MOD ELECTION!
JK
@CanadianLuke what about elections in the year 2100 and later?
don't be so pessimistic
@allquixotic If all goes according to plan, I'll be gone by then :P
Here, vote for this instead: android.stackexchange.com/a/88059/13954
Voted!
I just found out about ltsp.org and I want to try it at home
And then if it works, get dozens of old computers as donations and starting an NGO and teaching cool stuff to poor kids
I'd use raspberrys but importing them and buying monitors make them marginally cheaper than crappy laptops =/
19:12
@ThatBrazilianGuy I think I saw that project before, and it looked quite cool!
Even if you cluster a bunch of Raspberry Pis for the server ;)
No, I mean using Pis as workstations, buying them for what in the US or UK would cost about the price of a meal, order them in bulk and start a small computing class or some cool project
Here if I buy two Pi's and two monitors it's more expensive than a laptop =/
For the computing power, I'd prefer a netbook... And I hate netbooks

Anyone know how to get Excel to accept inputing a specific paper size for a large spreadsheet?
@CanadianLuke for printing?
Well, I need to print an Excel sheet on 36"x22" paper, at the size on the screen
I do not want to spread it out over many Letter sized pages
Well, you can set the print area. Then I guess see if you can shrink to page?
Tried, doesn't work. Shrinks everything, period. When I output to the PDF then, it has the right size text, but it's too blurry

I tried them both, neither worked.
