Draws a bit too much attention like that so I got to search another color combination, perhaps should look into showing the suggested duplicates in another place and remove the tags at the right side because they are in the question.
00:11
What the...
Do the numbers mean ANYTHING to anyone?
Because to me, it just confuses me
we have a Christianity site? Wow o.o
maybe best I don't write that! :/
I just have a bad sense of humour!
@SimonSheehan I think it is just Christianity and Judaism... I wonder how long before we have more and they all start a war against each other :/
Yeah, religions on sites like this... I don't know, just have a bad feeling.
@SimonSheehan There is just too much crap in the world - I just don't understand why people can't just get along!
@WilliamHilsum Completely agreed!
@SimonSheehan: eh, i'm told its decent
@SimonSheehan evidently on the christianity site the Jesus tag had 0 followers for a while
3
@nhinkle Haha. Hows the new PC?
@SimonSheehan beautiful
I've disabled the question boxes on my end, don't like their look and too bored to have them there in general, perhaps could make a toggle-able mode to make it duplicate question focused..
@nhinkle Tried any games yet? :P
00:34
@SimonSheehan i played a couple levels of portal 2, it was very smooth
@nhinkle Nice, sounds great. :D
How'd you do that with the background?
Also, +1 for using Pidgin :P
26
Q: How do I get different background images on my dual monitors?

balintIs there a way to set two different background pictures for my two monitors in Windows 7? By default the same background picture is used for both displays. I am looking for a solution without installing extra software.

Would be cool if it could be triple*
00:39
@SimonSheehan well it is. The question says "dual" but I did it on a triple
@nhinkle oh okay. Neat :D
Handy to know if I ever get a 2nd or third :P
yah. keep an eye out for used monitors. i got these 2 for $100 total, off craigslist
damn, pretty good.
can you identify the other icons? :P
@nhinkle Funniest thing I have heard!
00:41
Sticky notes, chrome, firefox, you are running dropbox. Control panel, or some sub category of it
Silverlight i think.
Paint.net
@SimonSheehan Visual Studio - close ;)
Task manager of course
@WilliamHilsum there's also people earning gold badges in "satanism" and "homosexuality" over there. It's quite amusing.
@nhinkle Ah, knew it was an MS product!
@nhinkle I truly hope your joking :o
oh wait, custom badges don't exist
@nhinkle I would love for some to make some cool script/graph that compares that... and possibly cross religion sites (there is 3 now (I think) ... forgot Atheism)... All just for amusement/non insult - would be funny!
00:44
@SimonSheehan tag badges
@SimonSheehan If you get enough points (I think 1000 upvotes) in any tag, you get a gold badge!
@WilliamHilsum Oh dear.
That's a bit...ugh
The homosexuality one bothers me a LOT
frick there's a lot of simons on SU
4 pages of them :(
@SimonSheehan that people get badges in it, or Christianity's views against it?
00:45
@nhinkle Both.
>_>
not all denominations are homophobic
the badges are just part of the site :/
@JourneymanGeek indeed. I know a gay mormon even. He's not really a mormon any more though, because... well...
Assuming that the questions are about the Roman Catholic Church's view on it, it's likely a bad thing for people. I'd better stay away from that site :P
@nhinkle: i know a gay transgendered quaker...
that almost sounds like the opening line to a very bad joke
@SimonSheehan yeah I have no interest in frequenting it. Except to watch the lolz from the sidelines.
00:48
lol
I think my favorite one so far is where a guy went on about how God is not a Pussy
8
A: If the Ten Commandments say “thou shalt not kill” how can a Christian fight in a war?

Jonathon ByrdI was just studying this. If you read more about this very topic you'll find that God is talking about shedding innocent blood. Have a look at what God did here: Judges 3:1-2 (New International Version) 1 These are the nations the LORD left to test all those Israelites who had not experienc...

One thing i love about hinduism, limited moral relativity
If its your job to kill people, well, its fine.
My great granddad used a saying "a still tongue makes a wise head"... I can (and want to) say so much about religion... just safer for me to shut up!
brb restart. you know how it is with windows updates on a new machine :P
00:50
Be right back
@WilliamHilsum: religions is a bit of a hobby for me, i've lived in a VERY varied environment - grew up hindu, went to a christian school... and my personal beliefs are hindu + some other elements from things i run into
and, off.. referencing workshop...
sigh. THINGS LIKE THIS IS WHAT COMPUTERS WERE INVENTED FOR!
I keep typing stuff, then erasing it... still think it is best for me just to keep out!
@JourneymanGeek Have fun!
hey @WilliamHilsum, I'm back
so i'm going to make a new login picture for this computer. which should i do?
so I'm on XP, and I have a file that is properly associated with a specific program, but I have no apparent way of finding out where that program is located
00:58
@NReilingh Easy... Go in to registry editor, Classes_root, look up the extension and it will show you the program!
like, I can find the name of this program in the file's properties under "open with," but using the search function for that program's name yields no results
okay, that's somewhere to start; thanks
the next step will be figuring out why IE7 isn't seeing that association
@NReilingh Here is a better program that will let you do it easier - nirsoft.net/utils/file_types_manager.html
@NReilingh I'm too big to be a ninja... I will be the Windows XP Sumo! :P
that's good too
I'm an OS X ninja, but mostly clueless and frustrated on windows
on that note, this has GOT to be a typo microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/… under "note" at the bottom
As for Internet Explorer, that does things a little differently, the file type may have a hook/addin or something funky... I can't really say without knowing a bit more info, but, if you need help later, let me know, I can always remote in and take a look for you (I am here from about 11AM-5:AM GMT on and off!) Or someone else can help
thanks--I'll see what I can figure out... It was working fine before, but I screwed it up by uninstalling a bunch of old crapware, evidently
01:02
@NReilingh Agreed!
regedit.exe, right?
</noob question>
dinner time. toodles.
but, I would try that Nirsoft program, if you don't look at the registry much, it will be MUCH easier (truth be told, and better) than registry editor
@nhinkle bye!
@nhinkle Got distracted... Both are BRILLIANT! - Can you rotate them somehow? Been ages since I looked at modding/themes - don't know what you can do :/
01:21
@WilliamHilsum Well, if you can believe it, the extension in question is nowhere to be found in the registry or any file type editor!!
@WilliamHilsum yet I can double-click it, and the program that's supposed to run does what it's supposed to
@WilliamHilsum All I have to go on is the name of the program as it appears in the file's properties
@WilliamHilsum windows executable files don't necessarily have to be named the same way as how they present themselves to the system, correct? or is there a command line tool I might be able to use to just search the filesystem for this string
@NReilingh Sort of, but you have me very interested!
If you don't have anything sensitive open, get teamviewer quick support - teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewerQS_en.exe - give me the ID/code and I will connect in and take a look for you
... I am rather busy, if you do want to do it, I am more than happy to, but, I am switching back and forth...
@WilliamHilsum Hehehe--thought you might say that. Unfortunately I'm actually doing that to the computer in question from my iMac, and it's not exactly local.
so I'd have to VNC you from here, lol
a bit convoluted for right now, I think
No problem
I would recommend going to Tools > Folder Options and turn on "display filetypes for known associations" or similar (can't quickly remember), and then it should show you what it is
@WilliamHilsum There is a file types tab in the Folder Options control panel that's largely the same as that utility you referenced, but I don't think there's an option like that
@WilliamHilsum Actually, this might be enough information to continue when I get back local to these computers... There are a few more similarly configured that aren't broken, so I may be able to duplicate some registry settings if I find they're set up that way
01:36
oh yeah, I found that before and unchecked it--but this extension was already visible, hence, "not known"
... Can you take a screenshot! I really want to solve this for you!
sure... you can't cascade team viewer sessions, can you?
@WilliamHilsum If you're really interested in this little problem, hit me up on Skype--same username
01:39
When did everyone start using Skype!!! I have it installed as so many of my friends do, but, no one seems to use MSN anymore!! I don't know why I keep it on!
heh, for voice of course
@SimonSheehan classic...but, I return
hmm, nice...
with the battery stretch option, my current reported battery life is about 7 hours
Bill Gates just OWNS Steve :P
oh, yay, ONE person i know >_>
and, logging off since class is about to start.
01:52
Cya later @JourneymanGeek
02:31
hehe, that is two users I have helped remotely in two nights! Who's next? :) I like the satisfaction of helping users, but, nothing beats the hands on approach and actually solving the problem directly!
@SimonSheehan Never seen this - thanks... FYI, to anyone... If you haven't seen it for more backstory of Microsoft/Apple - watch Pirates of Silicon Valley! - If you can find it, the parts are on Youtube - youtube.com/watch?v=xflXMZL2stU
In particular, the first 5 minutes of it... If you like computers, you have to watch!

2 hours later…

and... boooorrreeed
(lunch break)

Does anyone remember a question related to creating a secure password? The answer for the question talk about using part of the url, a set of static characters, and along with another tip.
close but not it
The questions is similar but I don't think it referenced any application. I believe most of the answers were tips on how to create one without any app.
it's has been a while since I was last in this room. Well any SE room, for that matter.
eh, i hang out here a lot, though prolly less now that school's started
I checked out the same question... Not it though.
There was one answer that completely original. It impressed me a lot. Should have favorite it. I knew I would want it later.
04:39
LMAO
What's SE's cache site url?
cache site?
Yes... I believe there is a SE site or page that can be used to find questions.
Such as deleted ones.
the search option?
er...
I was wrong. I was a data dump link not a cache link.

god this class is boring
04:50
Which class?
class on a Saturday? I feel for you!
(lunch break still.. but the class...)
Its a study skills workshop

1 hour later…
06:07
@Gareth: its not the fact i have class. its that its boring
ha, after an hour of silence, the notification sound I just got from your reply scared the crap out of me!
lol
i've had sunday classes, those are worse
06:51
joy, none of my lecturers seem to realise word does citations automagically
07:02
yeah, this is the link -> hothardware.com/cs/forums/t/56385.aspx
ugh
nice - but where's the wheel?
@Gareth THe focus is on the cabinet :)

A: Having problem to uninstall Folder Lock

dspeedupwindoYou need a powerful uninstall tool,I'd like to recommend you the Perfect Uninstaller ! It helps you to uninstall the Folder Lock and related files completely.

08:31
@JourneymanGeek indeed
hmmmm... aparently this isn't a probable solution to someone :P

A: Hardware Ethernet On/Off switch

KronoSYou could try something like this. While not an on/off switch it would do the same thing: I imagine what you could do, is place the cat-5 into the switch and then switch to the other port when you need to turn it off. Note: while this looks like a RJ-11 it says it's a RJ-45 (Cat-5) switch....

09:16
@TomWijsman whenever you're free, can have a look at this and let me know your analysis? I want to double check. THanks.

3 hours later…
12:13
@KronoS Haha, nice solution! :D
12:37
I've just give you +1 - I think it is a solution... very similar to my suggestion there, just, a bit better looking!
Guys.. I'll have to do some java coding in the nearby future. Which IDE should I use? Netbeans or Eclipse? I just can't decide. Netbeans feels more out-of-the-box but that's it. :/
@Shiki Eclipse is supposed to be the preferred
@Sathya Thanks!
@Shiki welcome!
13:23
welp. M.SO Rep: 1037. SU Rep: 3107 :P
@tombull89: screenshot if you get 1337 rep!
13:58
@tombull89 hehe
14:26
@Shiki: For Java, I actually prefer Netbeans. Eclipse for other things and Visual Studio for Microsoft-related languages.
@Sathya: Analysis tells me that a break point has been reached because an assertion has failed. Assertions fail because things are called in the wrong order, wrong parameters or worst case something internal fails.
I don't see any external cause listed...
@TomWijsman Guess I'll just start working with one of them and change if it won't work. >.>
@TomWijsman :(
Given the URL, can't you just disable reporting?
Task Scheduler has some tasks for reporting things to Microsoft on a regular basis.
And I think there is also aservice.
14:30
@TomWijsman I did a while back, that seems to have cut down the spikes
I guess Microsoft doesn't like your computer usage in one or another way... ^^
Anyhow, back to studying, just checking around
perhaps - seems to have cropped up recently.
the event log seems to indicate every time I killed task host, the error reporting service shut down, so I stopped it
hello @grawity
Hi @Sathya.
@Sathya: I hope that I one day can debug such things on a lower / assembly level...
@TomWijsman you aren't too far away ;)

1 hour later…
15:47
@JourneymanGeek thanks - further investigation resulted in finding out that there was a spammer network ~6 users, all registered,

Anyone here a blog editor?
(Not a contributor.)
I apparently have the power...
I also have that power
Keep meaning to post, but keep getting sidetracked
What can we do for you @GeorgeEdison?
I put two new images in the DropBox folder.
I need them for my article.
17:30
DropBox access is something i lack
Oh...
I'll get a link for you then.
@GeorgeEdison What do you want done with the images?
Likewise, my dropbox got accidentally nuked
@SimonSheehan Could you please upload them to the blog so I can embed them in my article?
17:32
Yep, one moment.
Ah, okay, had just logged in :)
You got it @SimonSheehan?
@SimonSheehan Thank you.
@GeorgeEdison No problem, glad to help.
Does anyone else find amazon.ca is VERY slow?
Or could confirm it for me
Oh, suddenly its going...odd
loaded in under a second for me...
Generally milling around seems fine too
Tho I'm in the UK so would be using a different approach to the site from you.
17:38
Yeah, it suddenly seems to be fixed.
Trying to find a gamecube controller and memory card for as cheap as possible
I'd have gone down to the local second hand games shop
they have all sorts of "retro" game bits
We don't really have on here
Just "next-gen" stores.
Which only sell current games, then a couple PS2 ones
hmmm, found some controllers, but "out of stock" is not helpful
Ah. I found a bunch here.
I'm not looking for new even, Used is still good, as i buy all my console stuff used
Hmmm, how much would you consider as cheap?
17:49
Under $30 really.
I don't want a wavebird really.
@Mokubai I'm trying not to order internationally - amazon has no shipping in Canada afaik
f/e :)
Amazon actually has it all
Within good prices, perfect
18:16
Why, oh why edit a closed question? superuser.com/questions/327390/…
It's pointless and just adding to the front page chaff
@SimonSheehan I deleted that question relating to programming. I forgot about SE Programmers. Last time, heard about it, it was still getting support to become a SE site. Anyways, I headed over there and saw that there are similar questions like mine. One of them was pretty helpful.
@Mokubai He was bored? Or OCD about little grammar mistakes. Such as 'off of'
@SgtOJ It's just, well, adding pointlessness to the pointless. Like a blind man teaching a colourblind man what red is...
lol
Sheesh!
I have a suspicion that they're trying to get into the competition by editing closed questions...
Which I find somewhat distasteful.
What competition?
Are you referring the latest story at the blog portal?

It’s already been two years now that Super User has been running, and we’ve come a long way. We still continue to provide as an excellent source for questions and answers to the online community for anything computer related.  We have also added the new officially blessed blog and had our very first community elections for moderators where we added 4 new moderators bringing us to a total of 8 moderators!

Our current, super awesome moderators are:

Last year, to celebrate our first year as a Stack Exchange site, we had a Super Contest.  This year, we’re doing it again, but t …

I read that.
I work too much to do that. Additionally, I work from Afghanistan using a slow satellite internet connection.
Sometimes, I'm just happy to be able to log in to SuperUser or even this chat room.
A lot of time I'm able to access SuperUser just fine. However, I can't get in to the chat room logged in. It's always says that I'm logged out. The last couple days I have been lucky.
Similarly, I'm a regular-ish around here, but not active enough to qualify
which is the most stable version of firefox after firefox 3.6?
I'm not sure. I have been using Chrome for the past couple of years. FF only comes up when I am testing JS code in different browser. Use to use it a lot for FireFly, but all browser comes with tools these days.
19:42
@lovesh whatever is the latest stable version. But as @SgtOJ I have dumped Firefox for CHrome. Quite some time ago, too
20:08
Probably not the best weekend to be asking questions or answering questions. While not if you are expecting vote-ups.

2 hours later…
21:52
Lynda.com worth the money?
Or Think Vitamin Membership?... Both are about $30/m.
22:23
@SgtOJ What are you actually trying to learn?
22:48
Web development is my main hobby. So I wanted to get in depth with JavaScript. It seems that JavaScript is going to become a big part of the future (and it already has). Also want to get in depth with PHP too.
If you are a student, I would highly recommend taking a look at dreamspark and pluralsight - very good training! After that, possibly tekpub - Whilst I haven't really heard negative reviews of Lynda, I haven't heard any positive ones either! I associate them more with end user/office/windows/design stuff... not in depth technical stuff - not saying they don't though... at the end of the day, it's up to you
I already know HTML and CSS pretty well. I probably haven't 'master' them yet. However, it doesn't take much to learn them. I also familiar with DOM scripting, PHP, JavaScript, and MySQL.
I heard about Dreamspark. Not a student at the time but I going to see if my college email is still up and running.
I mentioned it because Pluralsight give 90 days free through it!
Anyways, my big things is... I need to learn more. I follow John Resig, David Walsh, and Ben Alman. However, often they blog about JS stuff that is over my head. What I need is something that will help with learning the advance stuff easily.
I'm checking out Pluralsight and Tukpub now.
I though of Lynda.com only because I took a PHP course from them.. I was happy with results. I do know what you mean. A lot of the courses are too simple. That's why I was just going to pay for a month worth of service and quit. Long enough to take two 5hr long class. One of PHP and other on JavaScript.
23:54
@SgtOJ: if you can't get into the chatroom, there's an alternate sign in thing that always works - bookmark it the next time you have issues
alt sign in?
I'll look for it next time. I know I posted a meta question about a year ago. However, it wasn't very helpful.
