poltergeists i tell ya, the poltergeists have invaded!
@Omen: can you turn it back on?
I know I suggested it, but I've been running around a good chunk of the day (granted, some of it was in Rapture ;p)
yes, via right clicking and doing the troubleshooting
ahh
so... software issue, more likely

Q: Wi-fi turns off when USB device is plugged in

OmenI am having the problem that most times that I plug in a USB device, my wi-fi in the Asus Zenbook UX31E will turn off (not disconnect, but turn off with the red x over the wireless icon in the task bar), as per the diagram after step 7 in the diagram below: Another thing to note, the light on ...

that looks familar..lol
Bob
Bob
hm. have you tried a different OS?
Linux live cd?
11:02
@Bob: @allquixotic and I were walking him through it earlier, remember?
@Omen And it doesn't matter what USB port either? I'm trying to think about hardware issues...
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I didn't read the whole thing :P
No clippy, I'm fine
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek So, did it happen on other OSes?
11:03
does not matter which usb at all
the wifi is built in
@Bob: didn't think of asking that ;p
@Omen What if you plug in a USB hub, restart the wifi and then plug something into that hub?
Bob
Bob
-_-
@JourneymanGeek yea, that'd be a good idea to check
(I've been busy!)
Bob
Bob
@Omen Could you boot into a Linux LiveCD/USB and see if you can reproduce there?
Best way to tell if it's software (drivers...) or hardware (short? power issue? bad connection?)
11:05
I'll have to acquire those items before I can test that
Bob
Bob
@Omen Do you have a writable CD/DVD handy? Or a flash drive you don't mind wiping?
nah, fraid not
Bob
Bob
ah
got some shopping to do!
Bob
Bob
Yea, it'd help if you could pick up a flash drive.
8 GB goes for something like $6 at OW now.
@Omen In the meantime... who's your ISP?
11:08
probably at big W or IGA - will have to do it tomorrow
telstra.... spit...
Bob
Bob
I believe iiNet allows unlimited/uncapped access to some Linux ISOs.
@Bob: meh, everyone needs to have half a dozen spare flash drives ;p
Bob
Bob
Oh, Telstra. Bleh.
Yea, you're probably looking at a... 600-700MB download?
I wonder if one of the mini-distros would work.
Same thing I was wondering
i am on a 8GB/month plan.... wireless broadband... blah
Bob
Bob
11:09
Ouch.
@Omen Any chance you can leech off the Uni network or something? (your profile says you're a lecturer)
The smallest live distros go down to something like 50 MB, but I have no idea if they'd even work with wifi
adjunct unfortunatley - no access, as the uni is 00km away
600km that is
Bob
Bob
Puppy Linux is 150 MB...
Maybe TCL?
it's a bit more work to use, but it's less than a tenth the size of a full distro
claims to have wifi support
If you then grab YUMI, you should be able to put TCL on a flash drive
then boot from the flash drive, connect to wifi, and see if connecting a USB device stuffs things up again
if yes, then (probably) hardware. if no, then software.
@Omen ^
I will have to do that indeed - thank you for this!
Bob
Bob
there's other, lighter distros you can look at (Slitaz), but unfortunately the smaller you get the less likely wifi will work without a lot of stuffing around
might be better to just eat the extra download
a 500-600 MB download will be fine
anyway, I got to go - got a field day to prepare for tomorrow
definitely will chat again soon, thank you all again!

Bob
Bob

@JourneymanGeek what do you install?
@Bob: Minimal or server
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek hm, where's minimal?

1 hour later…
14:03
Hi everyone
what should be the exact partiton space to be done on a approx 1Tb Hard disk with 8 Gb Ram
i want 3 drivepartitions excluding the c:
It really depends on your needs and the OS, and what you use it for.
14:06
mine is 8.1 windows and its for some office,personal,gaming
needs
@JourneymanGeek in this scenario what should be the exact/approx MB to be shrink
@user285oo6: depends on how and what you install ;p
at least 100gb is a good idea for a primary/main partition, but I'm a big proponent of one partition per disk where possible
and windows does 2-3 partitions by default these days anyway
ok because windows 8.1 which i when purchased gave a single partition .With so much space at hand i can't organize the disk partition for a min of 2 atleast
I am in favour of one partition for the OS and one for data.
That makes recovery sooooooo much easier when things go bad.
@Hennes: meh, backups go on other machines
ok so i willdivide it in two partions
14:20
Backups: Yes.

Also, they do not get made as often as they should. This is a fact a fact of life for most peeple.

So /data (or D:\, or [my documents], or ... goes on its own drive or its own partition.

And the OS volume should be small enough that if gets full if someone puts data on it (rather then in its proper place). So 50-60GiB max atm
@Hennes @JourneymanGeek thanks, How much size of a dvd and a USB is required to do a System Backup
@Hennes: weekly backups to my raspi, data backups are with bvckup and samba ;p
@user285oo6: depends on how big your system is ;p
so could you say a 4 GB DVD/U.S.B drive would be sufficient for Windows 8.1
My last backups are from April this year
:(
Sadly, I suypect that this is better than average for most users (NOT most users in thsi chatroom. But users in general)
Bob
Bob
My backups currently occupy over 3 TB of space.
14:24
Aye, so do mine
So I got a 4TB disk, a R300 and the idea of building a backup server
@user285oo6: If you mean a recovery disk, maybe. You'd still need to store a copy of all your data somewhere.
Sadly the SAS/RAID card in the R300 does not support >2TiB drives and the other RAID card I got (a 2308 based card) is not compatible with the power supply in the R300
I tend to put my data on another drive
Bob
Bob
@Hennes I still find bigger drives iffy.
I'd rather have a bunch of 2TB ones than half the number of 4TB ones.
I got 2 2TB drives, and one 4TB one.
14:26
@JourneymanGeek ya recovery disk it is(i.e. the back-up of the windows os)
The idea was an R300 with SAS2.0, 240GB SSD and a single 4TB drive as local backuip
@Bob: I need more drives ;p
later i would go in for the data backup
I currently have a half full 3tb one on my desktop
@user285oo6: eh, I consider my systems frangible.
I just keep installers and keys handy, and if bad things happen, rebuild
same with my old system for backup of data
14:28
(then again, I'm paranoid about my music collection and have multiple copies of it, including offsite)
but now i am more concentrated with os backup
2x 2TB would also be nice, but as a stripe or without redundancy
@Hennes ok plz give a link to it
uhm, link to what ?
i can't follow the hardware specs given so could you please a link to what kind of hardware are you mentioning above
14:32
Basically an older 1U server.
I already had one, and I bought two more on ebay.
Not fast byu modern standards, but way more fun and cheaper than a new NAS.
lol
My current backup box is a raspi
Your rPi is a lot smaller and half the price of this.
lol
and a lot slower.
and I think I have double or triple the worth of the raspi in addons.
Aye.The pi is self is cheap.
I recently added an USB power 'charger' to power the pi when I had no net power.
And a 7 cm touchscreen
Bob
Bob
Heh. I wonder how long the Xiaomi pack can run a Pi for
14:46

@Bob In a few weeks I will be able to answer that.

@Hennes Ugh.
If you aren't averse to taking it apart, it's quite easy.
It should also come in a cardboard box with a little sticker on it.
There's a code on the sticker (scratch off the silver stuff with a coin, be careful because the paper under it is fragile) - you can check that code on their website.
15:01
@Hennes: their shipping's gotten better if its tracked.
We placed one order for 3 people.
Much to Mathieuue's regret. All his stuff was ready to go. Mine needed to be shipped in first. :)
That should be pretty fast ;p

Q: If a typical passenger plane had total failure of all engines mid-flight, is it possible for passengers to survive?

Miyazawa KenjiI have pretty bad flying phobia and often wonder what would happen if all the engines on the craft went out at the same time. I initially had the anxiety-ridden thought that the hundreds of thousands of pounds of metal would nose-dive and explode into the Earth. Then I read somewhere that the pla...

Thanks ACI :P
Hey, @slhck, you here?
Sorry, but Stack Exchange sites aren't good for that kind of listing. — slhck ♦ 1 hour ago
I just wanted to say that question might be answerable with a general answer not requiring listing.
Specifically, "Windows 10 still works with touchscreens, but the tech preview is only available on x86. RT devices, which run on ARM, are not supported by the tech preview."
The second half, about his non-RT machine, is just a bad coincidence (probably a crashing driver) and should be in a new question.
Hm. We really need a canonical on diagnosing Windows upgrade errors.
Bob
Bob
16:42
@allquixotic didya hear why it's Win10?
Bob
Bob
17:11
17:55
@Bob If you can make it more generic, go ahead
I'm not too deep into that subject, so I can't generalize… I can just say that a list of devices isn't gonna work
Bob
Bob
@slhck Well, an answer would point out the general requirements/limitations, not provide a list of devices
I might edit the question tomorrow... really can't be bothered doing anything right now -_-
@Bob Right, but it's about the question. Doesn't prevent people from posting "I have a xyz and it works for me"
Bob
Bob
@slhck then that's a bad answer
@Bob no...?
Bob
Bob
I really don't see the the question as asking for a list of devices
18:04
@Bob Well, the question was asking for bad answers. That's why we close questions that invite opinionated answers… if we had a strict policy to delete answers without references, then we could deal with subjective questions too
> So, what touch devices ARE currently supported?
How is that not a list? Or open to an unlimited set of answers?
Bob
Bob
@slhck what [category of|type of] touch
@Bob That's not what it says
Bob
Bob
it's still a tad broad, but in this case a concise answer can be given
@slhck that's how I read the Q
@Bob Again, feel free to reword it to make it more canonical
thanks for the edit here, slhck
18:06
How can I find out if I can upgrade my touch device to Windows 10 or something
@allquixotic Sure, I saw you were probably asleep already and thought I could clarify that part :P
Bob
Bob
@slhck I still think an answer of "none of RT, and touch status is irrelevant for x86" is pretty definite. but I'll get around to that tomorrow... maybe
@allquixotic well, I'm gonna blame Java on this one
(there are other offenders, but it's one of the biggest)
The Java reference implementation does this in multiple places.
@allquixotic good point! The problems only started this year - I used the wireless initially, then used a broadband internet USB all last year. — Omen 2 hours ago
hmm @Omen sounds like a windows update, app install, or driver update might've contributed since this has a history of working in the past
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic since it's a laptop, hardware failure isn't too unlikely either
I'm hoping he can test with a livecd tomorrow
Bob
Bob
@slhck sure, thanks
gah, I want to answer, but I don't really want to put the effort into writing fleshing out an answer right now :P
is currently procrastinating something else important
18:17
@Bob … could become popular, just sayin'
If you're here for the rep, of course.
Bob
Bob
lol
Bob
Bob
18:29
@slhck Attempted answer. Heck, my answer could probably be generalised to all "will windows 10 work with X hardware" :\
Ok, gotta stop procrastinating now -_-
@slhck Also, for the record: it just annoys me to see inaccurate answers
@Bob Hm?
Bob
Bob
@slhck I'm mostly here (after breaking the 10k barrier, anyway :P) to provide good answers, not for the rep
...though I admit the rep is good too, useless as it is :P
18:56
@Bob Ah, that. Well yeah. That rep thing is quite useless after a certain level.

Ugh, I'm copying my file to a NAS with 1 MB/s. Don't want to go hunt for the bottleneck.

@allquixotic too bad you're not a direct employee of the gov :P
@slhck o.O

It shouldn't be that bad
Bob
Bob
19:20
@slhck is it a single file?
-42 dBm RSSI
@Bob Unfortunately, yeah
Will try 5 GHz next… for some reason I'm connected to the 2.4 GHz one
Bob
Bob
yea, that might do it
Bob
Bob
@slhck can you view other networks?
they won't necessarily come up as noise
Bold one is the one I'm on
19:24
@OliverSalzburg hey wow. Thanks!
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino oh yea, a belated happy birthday
@HackToHell ta
@Bob thanks. It's already next day O_O
Ok, 5 GHz gives me 4.5 MB/s instead of 1.
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino eh, I haven't slept yet! :P
it's all the same day
yeah, the clock doesn't reset until I wake up!
Bob
Bob
19:25
@slhck ya that's pretty noisy
Well happy birthday @jokerdino
Bob
Bob
why channel 2?
channel 2 is bad
@Bob No idea, was a preset I suppose.
@slhck thanks soul.
Bob
Bob
@slhck better to change it
urgh, all those networks on shitty channels
19:26
haha
Bob
Bob
1, 6, 11 and 14 are good
anything else is bad
Crappy ISP router can only do 2.4 GHz of course, and doesn't have GBit LAN
Bob
Bob
specifically, when you share a channel with another AP, they can negotiate
when you have an overlapping but different channel, it's all just noise
1, 6, 11 and 14 are the max set of non-overlapping, so all networks should be on one of those
I'm gonna try 11
Bob
Bob
ideally you don't even have to share
but sharing is better than overlapping
@slhck eww ISP routers :P
19:30
Funny though that I'm the only 5 GHz network here
Bob
Bob
yea, I think there might be one other here, and it popped up recently
there's far more channels available too
but in exchange for the lower interference you get slightly worse range and fewer supporting devices
hm. how long has n been here?
I think everything I have that's capable of wifi can do n now
heck, they're all dual-band too
...but there's other devices I don't own here that can't, so bleh
Just recently bought an AirPlay speaker and didn't check the 802.11 support… turns out it was b/g only
In 2014, c'mon
Bob
Bob
wow
I had to send it back because it wouldn't stream properly even with the AP next to it
19:59
@AJHenderson You say, “part of the SE platform is that all answers are community property. They can be modified by anyone at will, though newer users' edits have to be approved. It clearly shows that they edited your answer and if you really disagree with it, you are free to revert part of their edit. Your original is never lost.” I am very well aware of this fact since I am quite active on other Stack Exchange sites & often edit myself.
@AJHenderson In this case, the method of editing—described to me as “the culture”—of SuperUser seems to filly directly in the face of how I understand the Stack Exchange sites to work. And in my case, basic procedure, respect & decorum simply went out the window. It seems that on SuperUser ANY post is deemed to be on the same level as “CommunityWiki” even if it is a few minutes old.
@AJHenderson With radical edits being made before the answer has even gotten some basic time to live. Additional, perfectly valid answers from non-developer users seem to be treated as second fiddle to a core project developer coming in and giving their expert opinion.
@AJHenderson Granted, yes the developer of a tool will know how to deal with many issues better than basic users, but by the same token tool developers rely on end-users to be actively involved with their product to allow for real world testing/usage that can them be used by the developer to then evolve the tool.
@AJHenderson Meaning that if the “culture” here is to favor developers over users in some hierarchy of—let’s face it—power, what motivation does an end user have to contribute to the community as well as the software? This essentially then devolves into a “help ticket” board for the experts with no ability for others to grow & contribute. Thus the community becomes inbred & isolated.
@AJHenderson And when compared to other online communities, the Stack Exchange sites thrive on contributions being well managed from ALL sources. Yes, there are conflicts. Yes, Stack Overflow can be seen as messier than SuperUser, but out of they supposed “mess” comes growth.
@AJHenderson With regards to my use of foul language in the chat, I do not apologize for that. The user allquixotic was using similar language towards my simple meta-qutestion before I said one peep & derided any concern I made in my original—and now thankfully deleted—Meta question. So the way I see this, respect is a two way street. Especially in the case of a user with such a high reputation as all quixotic.
@AJHenderson My apogees though for assuming allquixotic was a moderator/admin here. I just assumed he was from his overbearing manner in my interactions with him.
@Bob And all that said, thank you Bob again for the levelheaded and rational answer to my now deleted meta question. allquixotic derided my appreciation of that answer by claiming that somehow he said the same thing as you so why would I favor that answer rather than his. Well, I will tell you why: allquixotic demeanor, tone, lack of respect, lack of concern & endless derision makes me not care one iota for his opinion.
@Bob In fact I stand by my opinion that allquixotic attitude exemplifies the 133t attitude that makes me not care about most other tech forums. And it’s an attitude I would hope that the Stack Exchange sites can deal with eliminating since I am not alone in hating that attitude. But if he found a home in the odd culture of SuperUser then hey, more power to him. But I think one needs to step back & realize that fostering that 133t mentality will never help Super User grow.
That’s all folks! I will go back to editing posts & answers the way I understand how to answer them. And I will respect the voice of the question posters as well as question answers. That works for me. Bye.
20:19
Well, let's just get one thing straight… @allquixotic never used any cursewords as far as I've seen the conversation. There's still a difference between a somewhat heated dispute and verbally attacking others.
@slhck Yes, he did: “in the case of that guy who asked the meta Q, he made a comment where he said he completely agrees with the edit, and finds it helpful and useful, but he STILL doesn't want it in "his" answer, like he owns the fucking thing” chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/118?m=17982492#17982492
@slhck In fact, here is a nice list of allquixotic using cursewords all over the chat: chat.stackexchange.com/…
@slhck So as the saying goes, “When in Rome…” blah, blah…
@JakeGould "the fucking thing" != "fuck you, $name"
@slhck So—and this is directly straight at you, slhck—you really need to get your act together as a moderator if somehow you will pounce any post here to edit it immediately to “Community Wiki” standards, yet you are somehow ignorant of the way users allquixotic are enabling a toxic environment on this site. The quality of posts here might be “high” by the self-qualifying standard of you are ultimately only allowing an elite few to actually have a voice.
@slhck And yes, he did not use curse words directly towards me. Instead he accused me of having a persecution complex in the comments on the meta thread that is now gone & basically posted continual “You are wrong!” comments towards me. That’s an attack. And your tolerance of that behavior is why I saw him as a mod/admin. Now I know he is neither but something less than the quality of user I expect on Stack Exchange sites.
@JakeGould I had deleted that one comment, but perhaps you didn't notice.
@JakeGould I expressed my reasoning for acting like I did—in the interest of curating content, keeping in mind that more than 90% of the people viewing our site come from search engines. They don't care who the guy or girl is that wrote the post. It's what the most upvoted post actually says, and that's what they're gonna try and run in their command line.
20:39
What's a good tech gift I can give my dad?
If you were concerned with the overall tone of discussion or felt offended by one user, I hope you consider just stepping back from it for a minute, and flagging it and let someone else handle that. I deleted the post since you asked for it but I normally would have let another mod deal with the request.
@DemCodeLines How much do you want to spend?
grah. Windows 10 --
[start] [ ---run--- search] `devmgmt.msc` works. But surely there is a different method to start that ?
@slhck Up till $300. No more.
Or some method to actually show the [run] option in the start menu
@DemCodeLines Well, I was gonna suggest to buy a Raspberry Pi with some accessories.
But with $300 you can of course buy a lot more.
20:41
@slhck Ehh, I wouldn't make anything out of it...
@DemCodeLines That really depends on your dad
And giving my dad a Raspberry Pi would be useless, since he wouldn't know what to do with it.
E.g. a hooving 4 rotor copter would have been great for my dad when he was 15 years younger
@slhck Which is where I need help...
He doesn't really have the time to make stuff for himself.
But on this channel you are probably getting a lot more computer related suggestions.
E.g. a drive for backups for his pictures.
20:43
@DemCodeLines Ah, ok, then scratch that
Or a nice beamer to watch TV on (assuming his eyesight is getting worse and that a really big screen will help)
As I said, I am looking for a tech gadget.
No idea, I can't even think of stuff I want as a present.
Well, what does your dad usually use computers for?
Browse thinkgeek ?
That works for both products and for ideas
I wanted to gift him the Moto 360, but I have yet to actually physically see it myself, so I don't know if it will be abnormally big for him.
It's also locked to android, so if my dad switches away from Android phones, the smartwatch would be useless.

Mostly because I do not have a windows key on my home keyboard (IBM model M)
@DemCodeLines But what are the odds of that happening?

A lot, since I am about to convince him to switch over to WinPhone
