plug in BT cans, they're too loud, turn down volume; get in car, it's too soft, crank volume to max; come home, listen to ballgame out of speaker, crank volume to max...
actually, aside from leaking a ton of sound because of their sheer size, and facing the prospect of being named "Headphones" by people in the office, one of the best possible setups for audio quality (no BT dropouts, yay!) would be to buy another $300 Steelseries H Wireless for work. :P
@Bob the "Beats stage" of your sound card would be like having a "stutter" element in gstreamer and purposefully inserting it into a video pipeline: gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=... ! decodebin2 ! stutter ! autovideosink
Ruining things is good!
too bad you can't passthrough your raw sound hardware to Linux; I'm sure that if the Beats stage is in software, you could get around it by running Linux.
or you could run your host OS as a thin Linux desktop with pulseaudio and run VMware on top for Windows... though that would kill graphics driver perf... unless you could find a way to make the Linux headless and PCIe passthrough your GPU to Windows
@Bob I think I'll just add the Sennheiser MM 450-X to my "3-month wishlist" (I'm going to start adopting that policy like @JourneymanGeek) -- I have to want them for 3 months before I buy them
> The noise plus distortion came in at 0.25% at 1khz.(at 500mv output) That seemed to be a reasonable figure for what it is. Should be below what can be heard. A frequency sweep showed a very flat response down to the bottom octave. At 20hz it had drop of about 0.75 db. A little weak in the lowest octave but hardly enough to notice.
I'll probably buy some little dongle that connects to the 3.5mm port on my phone and does bluetooth to my headphones, that way I can have my cake and give Samsung the finger too
I like KnoxSE for Android NSA Backdoor for Android. It keeps me safe and secure. In a nice security blanket. Wrapped up tight. In chains. Chains of the tyrant. Tyrant chains that bind and restrict and prevent and monitor. "Ohhhh, so he likes pizza from that restaurant..."
@JourneymanGeek Any government handler who is trying to watch me is going to realize I'm really JC Denton and activate my killswitch, but only after I'm on a plane to Hong Kong to meet Tracer Tong to have it deactivated after having a revelation and blowing up one of their agents in a confrontation aboard a private 747
or maybe I'm JC Denton in the alternate timeline that was never coded into the game but was entirely possible, where Denton shoots Lebedev, then tells Anna Navarre that he just saw Paul and Paul is sided with the NSF and tells her to lock down the facility, then they catch and kill Paul and JC becomes the bad guy
lol. yeah. I mean even in the JC is Evil timeline I'd still want Gunther to die -- Paul would simply take over for JC, and instead of Tong curing JC of the Grey Death, Tong would cure Paul, and Paul would be your rival
you'd get to a point late in the game where you finally think you've got Paul cornered, but Gunther would get there before JC does, and right as he goes to shoot, Paul says "Laputin Machine"... BOOM... which makes you black out from the explosion nearly killing you
then you wake up to Paul and the remaining resistance and are forced to turn against UNATCO (finally) and face an uphill battle without half your friends there to help
yeah, they could totally remake Deus Ex much more grisly and dark (even though it was very dark to begin with) in a new engine, and man, it would be awesome
Human Revolution wasn't sufficient imho. it was a good game but not a proper remake or reboot.
not loyal enough to the source though
it was more of an "evil guy in the background, mwa ha ha ha ha!!!" story than a "the entire world is complicit in a conspiracy and there's nothing you can do about it because it's so extensive" story
the latter is more chilling / darker / more faithful to the original
hm. or instead of you eventually turning, you could simply succeed and completely eliminate all resistance to the MJ12 takeover of the world, but then turn on your masters, and kill Bob Page and take his immortality device thing and become what he was trying to become :P
no. either you shut down his fusion reactors, or you merge with Helios (which isn't what he was trying to do), or you blow up the whole damn place and plunge the world into the dark ages again
When setting a bounty on a question, I'm given several options. One of those options is "One or more of the answers is exemplary and worthy of an additional bounty". I chose that option, and there's a bounty button besides every answer. When I click the answer I want to award the bounty to, it te...
@ThatBrazilianGuy because US CEOs need the money you are not earning (or which is not being spent on better infrastructure) to buy more yachts than they already have
16-yacht owners are statistically found to be 4% less likely to obtain a new fling with a different 23 year old blonde PYT every weekend, compared to 17-yacht owners
Last saturday I gave a talk on WordPress. The guys who usually do those talks are super busy organizing the Rio WordCamp so me and some other guys basically decided to do this month's talks on our own (with their approval and help), I stayed awake a few
nights to write my text and powerpoint slides and it was a (relative) success, about 16 people showed up on a saturday and stayed the whole day, it was cool and all, and I recognized one of the guys present there from a WordCamp in São Paulo last year
When I began my talk I said I worked at $myworkplace but in an area unrelated to what I love, WP and web. So he sends me an email saying there's a position where he works, to work exclusively with web and WP, asking for my resumé and portfolio (plugins I wrote, etc).
I had to politely turn it down because, in other words, I suck and have no technical knowledge about the things that I love.
Trainee / apprenticeship positions here mean you either will perform menial tasks such as getting coffee, or be used as a cheap overworked employee require that you're going to college except in really informal places. And, I don't like mentioning this, but I dropped out of college when I was 22 and never finished it.
(My wife signed me up for this year's upcoming exams without me knowing it)
instead of "pointing that", say "pointing this out" or "mentioning this"
I didn't "s" you in case you wanted to delete that
there are a lot of people who haven't finished college who are smart
exceptions can be made
cc @SmartymanGeek
if you gave a talk on something then you must know something about it - and if they want you to just use what you know, then there's really no reason why you should turn it down
worst case, they hire you and you're way in over your head and you're challenged and you have to step up to the plate -- this is rarely a bad thing unless you would need 8 years of training just to have a clue
I wouldn't take a job as a nuclear physicist, but I'd accept almost any job in application programming
even if I didn't know the programming language very well
you might be getting bitten by the backswing of the Dunning-Kruger effect. the front swing is people who are ignorant on a subject who think they are competent or knowledgable; the backswing is people who are experts but who think they know nothing and think that true experts know 100,000,000 times more than they do
I am trapped between a job that I don't particularly like and where I won't be learning or applying what I like, but (1) pays a sum that would require me much more knowledge to match outside the non-gvmt world, and (2) I'm almost "unfireable"; or a job where I'm probably earning much less (specially initially), might be eventually hired but even hired might be later fired, who knows; and maybe things end up fine and maybe they don't.
So I either pick dull + certain + some money or incertain + initial small ammount + maybe cool
well if it were a pay cut I wouldn't take it :P but I was under the assumption it would be a raise or at least a lateral and being something you like more
!!should @ThatBrazilianGuy pick dull and certain or fun and uncertain
There's a considerable ammount of money I'm supposed to receive but ThatBrazilianGvmnt is taking more than 8 years to process the papers and I can't see the green of my money ;_____;
When / if I get it, I'd be so tempted to quit my job to pursue my passions
I LOVE Pryso much -- when something crashes in my app, the Pry console pops up automatically, and I can literally type wtf? and it'll give me the exception backtrace
then I can poke around, run expressions, change threads, etc
@allquixotic As tempting as it is to believe that, I know I know a little HTML, a teeny tiny speck of CSS, absolutely zero JS and near-zero jQuery, and I smash my head on the keyboard until PHP does (close to) what I want. And I can configure really simple web servers.
@allquixotic He mentioned "web dev" and "WordPress" and asked for "code samples, free software, plugins and the like" so I assumed HTML/CSS/JS + PHP (specially the WP functions, hooks and filters)
@allquixotic I had a friend on high school who would do that in real life. She would reply to you hours or even a day or two later, out of the blue, as if commenting on anything you just said.
the reply arrows are really cool, in general, because it allows multithreaded conversations to take place with basically no "recontextification" -- if we didn't have reply arrows, and we wanted to follow up an earlier thread, you would have to give enough information for them to know what subject you're on
