@allquixotic I suppose if you could find a local store to try them out at...
@allquixotic: I've mentioned my current 'dream' setup no?
plug in BT cans, they're too loud, turn down volume; get in car, it's too soft, crank volume to max; come home, listen to ballgame out of speaker, crank volume to max...
@JourneymanGeek No. :P
actually, aside from leaking a ton of sound because of their sheer size, and facing the prospect of being named "Headphones" by people in the office, one of the best possible setups for audio quality (no BT dropouts, yay!) would be to buy another $300 Steelseries H Wireless for work. :P
Its a bit of a hipster piece of kit tho
15:02
I've never felt that I need an amp....
music is loud enough as it is
@allquixotic: and amp isn't just for loudness
@JourneymanGeek if you're going to attenuate it or not use the full loudness, then what's the point of an amp?
amping and then attenuating actually reduces quality anyway
@allquixotic: basically the driver stage of most sound cards suck
and that's not just an amp
its a sound card + amp
Bob
Bob
I take more issue with the Beats stage of mine, forget the driver -_-
@Bob the "Beats stage" of your sound card would be like having a "stutter" element in gstreamer and purposefully inserting it into a video pipeline: gst-launch-1.0 filesrc location=... ! decodebin2 ! stutter ! autovideosink
Ruining things is good!
too bad you can't passthrough your raw sound hardware to Linux; I'm sure that if the Beats stage is in software, you could get around it by running Linux.
or you could run your host OS as a thin Linux desktop with pulseaudio and run VMware on top for Windows... though that would kill graphics driver perf... unless you could find a way to make the Linux headless and PCIe passthrough your GPU to Windows
15:07
lol
heya Spock hinkle
morning, @allquixotic
@Bob I think I'll just add the Sennheiser MM 450-X to my "3-month wishlist" (I'm going to start adopting that policy like @JourneymanGeek) -- I have to want them for 3 months before I buy them
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Well, I'm going to be 'replacing' the entire sound stack from hardware to drivers soon-ish.
@Bob How?
SP4? :P
@allquixotic: it works pretty well

@JourneymanGeek probably going with the fort then, thanks
:D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D ... o wait it isn't out yet D:
@allquixotic: SUPER tiny sound card ;p
15:11
@JourneymanGeek mini-pciE?
or cardbus?
Bob

O_O the fort completely dropped off the face of ebay
ahh (nostarsplz)

> 0 results found for SMSL fort,so we searched for s sl for t.
PoS didn't search international sites properly
> 0 results found for eby stpd, so we searched for ebay stupid.
Yo dawg, we herd u like SMSL forts, so we put an s sl for t in yo search box so yo can search while yo search
^ fail yo dawg, sorry
rofl
sorry, that's the yo dawg meme, not talking to you, puppy :P
Bob

> Cons: Incompatible with USB 3.0
O_O
it has nothing to do with dogs :P
15:15
0_0
I've not ever seen any USB 3.0 audio gear
@Bob it must take some real effort to build a device that's not backwards-compatible with a bus that's backwards-compatible
Bob
Bob
> The DAC does not function with USB 3.0 ports.
(cause you don't need the bandwidth. Some folk swear by firewire)
Bob
Bob
how... wha?
That dosen't sound right.
that's ridiculous
Bob
Bob
I'm putting this down to user error.
maybe there are certain early-gen USB 3.0 controllers which are buggy that happen not to work
I'd take a lot of the stuff you read on head fi with a large helping of salt
15:17
but the protocols are supposed to be compatible -_-
Bob
Bob
I've actually had USB 3.0 devices not work on some USB 2.0 ports because the port would short some contacts in the plug.
But the contacts on the port are recessed, so this shouldn't happen the other way around...
rats, I think I took my 3.5mm cable home! -_-
I did! D:
got so fucking tired of the constant dropouts
lol
@allquixotic: Have spares!
I was like... *rip headphones off* OK WHERE THE HELL IS MY CABLE.
Bob
Bob
> The noise plus distortion came in at 0.25% at 1khz.(at 500mv output) That seemed to be a reasonable figure for what it is. Should be below what
can be heard. A frequency sweep showed a very flat response down to the bottom octave. At 20hz it had drop of about 0.75 db.
A little weak in the lowest octave but hardly enough to notice.
15:20
lol
I'll probably buy some little dongle that connects to the 3.5mm port on my phone and does bluetooth to my headphones, that way I can have my cake and give Samsung the finger too
....
actually, I should have tacked on a 3.5mm cable to my most recent dx order
either that or another pair of H Wirelesses
they have one I like, and I'd like a spare.
but I prefer smaller, more discreet sized headphones in the office
Bob

15:21
you might as well flash cyanogen at this rate
Knox + VZW lockdown + latest patched OTA + no bootloader unlock exploit exists = no Cyanogen
besides, I like having access to ISIS Wallet Softcore Softcard
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I basically said fuck knox
I like Knox SE for Android NSA Backdoor for Android. It keeps me safe and secure. In a nice security blanket. Wrapped up tight. In chains. Chains of the tyrant. Tyrant chains that bind and restrict and prevent and monitor. "Ohhhh, so he likes pizza from that restaurant..."

oh. CM. I was about to say, we don't get nightly OTAs here!
@allquixotic: Any government handler who is trying to watch me is going to die of boredom.
@JourneymanGeek Any government handler who is trying to watch me is going to realize I'm really JC Denton and activate my killswitch, but only after I'm on a plane to Hong Kong to meet Tracer Tong to have it deactivated after having a revelation and blowing up one of their agents in a confrontation aboard a private 747
15:26
no, I have no fantasies about living my life like the game Deus Ex
or maybe I'm JC Denton in the alternate timeline that was never coded into the game but was entirely possible, where Denton shoots Lebedev, then tells Anna Navarre that he just saw Paul and Paul is sided with the NSF and tells her to lock down the facility, then they catch and kill Paul and JC becomes the bad guy
the guys who did The Nameless Mod really should've done that timeline instead, would've been awesome
but as it stands, you weren't given a choice; you had to rebel against UNATCO
@allquixotic: would have made the rest of the story more complicated tho
what would you do in paris, for example
15:29
@JourneymanGeek find and kill Nicolette DuClare?
or maybe instead of killing Paul right there at LaGuardia, you'd confront him, but he'd escape by the skin of his teeth
possibly killing Anna Navarre in the process (since nobody likes her anyway)
then you'd be chasing Paul the whole game
and while chasing Paul you'd have to kill people like Nicolette DuClare and Jaime Reyes and Tracer Tong
ahh, and he kills Gunter Herrman with nanobots in his orange soda.
lol. yeah. I mean even in the JC is Evil timeline I'd still want Gunther to die -- Paul would simply take over for JC, and instead of Tong curing JC of the Grey Death, Tong would cure Paul, and Paul would be your rival
you'd get to a point late in the game where you finally think you've got Paul cornered, but Gunther would get there before JC does, and right as he goes to shoot, Paul says "Laputin Machine"... BOOM... which makes you black out from the explosion nearly killing you
then you wake up to Paul and the remaining resistance and are forced to turn against UNATCO (finally) and face an uphill battle without half your friends there to help
yeah, they could totally remake Deus Ex much more grisly and dark (even though it was very dark to begin with) in a new engine, and man, it would be awesome
Human Revolution wasn't sufficient imho. it was a good game but not a proper remake or reboot.
not loyal enough to the source though
it was more of an "evil guy in the background, mwa ha ha ha ha!!!" story than a "the entire world is complicit in a conspiracy and there's nothing you can do about it because it's so extensive" story
the latter is more chilling / darker / more faithful to the original
hm. or instead of you eventually turning, you could simply succeed and completely eliminate all resistance to the MJ12 takeover of the world, but then turn on your masters, and kill Bob Page and take his immortality device thing and become what he was trying to become :P
isn't that sorta what happens? ;p
no. either you shut down his fusion reactors, or you merge with Helios (which isn't what he was trying to do), or you blow up the whole damn place and plunge the world into the dark ages again
Goona switch from ssh to that ;p
mosh is neat
and since there's a chrome addon, you're fairly OS independant
There's no windows native client :/
yah
:/
@HackToHell: apparently mobaxterm does mosh
15:53
It looks dodgy o0 ;p
lol
its a cool app. and not too cripped free-version wise

@HackToHell I've long hypothesized that cars will eventually converge on a perfectly round sphere design.
@nhinkle The Dig's tram!
(it's small in the background but it's coming through that tube)
18:12
@JourneymanGeek Your opinion about these?
@Bob my new favorite "cat-typing-esque" string that isn't actually cat typing is "QLssLLa32"
Windows::API.new('SetCurrentConsoleFontEx', 'LBP', 'B').call(Windows::Console::GetStdHandle(-11), false, [84, 5, 9, 14, 54, 700, 'Lucida Console'].pack('QLssLLa32'))
no, those aren't random numbers
they're magic numbers

@ThatBrazilianGuy you work at Apple?!
Você trabalha na Apple ?!

Você trabalha na Maçã ?!
Maçã? Que maçã, senhor?

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY
@ThatBrazilianGuy because US CEOs need the money you are not earning (or which is not being spent on better infrastructure) to buy more yachts than they already have
16-yacht owners are statistically found to be 4% less likely to obtain a new fling with a different 23 year old blonde PYT every weekend, compared to 17-yacht owners
22:56
@allquixotic It's more in the lines of "you have to pick the less shitty, except we're all shitty so you are screwed".
Oh no wait, those are our politicians.
Presidential elections this year :(
23:15
I'm sad. Someone offered me a position I'd love to accept but I had to turn it down. :(
:((((( wat
Last saturday I gave a talk on WordPress. The guys who usually do those talks are super busy organizing the Rio WordCamp so me and some other guys basically decided to do this month's talks on our own (with their approval and help), I stayed awake a few
nights to write my text and powerpoint slides and it was a (relative) success, about 16 people showed up on a saturday and stayed the whole day, it was cool and all, and I recognized one of the guys present there from a WordCamp in São Paulo last year
When I began my talk I said I worked at $myworkplace but in an area unrelated to what I love, WP and web. So he sends me an email saying there's a position where he works, to work exclusively with web and WP, asking for my resumé and portfolio (plugins I wrote, etc).
I had to politely turn it down because, in other words, I suck and have no technical knowledge about the things that I love.
um.
you should have accepted and been like YES I WILL LEARN ON THE JOB YES YES :D
especially if it was more $
don't ever respond to a job offer with

Trainee / apprenticeship positions here mean you either will perform menial tasks such as getting coffee, or be used as a cheap overworked employee require that you're going to college except in really informal places. And, I don't like mentioning this, but I dropped out of college when I was 22 and never finished it.
(My wife signed me up for this year's upcoming exams without me knowing it)
instead of "pointing that", say "pointing this out" or "mentioning this"
I didn't "s" you in case you wanted to delete that
there are a lot of people who haven't finished college who are smart
exceptions can be made
cc @SmartymanGeek
if you gave a talk on something then you must know something about it - and if they want you to just use what you know, then there's really no reason why you should turn it down
worst case, they hire you and you're way in over your head and you're challenged and you have to step up to the plate -- this is rarely a bad thing unless you would need 8 years of training just to have a clue
I wouldn't take a job as a nuclear physicist, but I'd accept almost any job in application programming
even if I didn't know the programming language very well
you might be getting bitten by the backswing of the Dunning-Kruger effect. the front swing is people who are ignorant on a subject who think they are competent or knowledgable; the backswing is people who are experts but who think they know nothing and think that true experts know 100,000,000 times more than they do
I am trapped between a job that I don't particularly like and where I won't be learning or applying what I like, but (1) pays a sum that would require me much more knowledge to match outside the non-gvmt world, and (2) I'm almost "unfireable"; or a job where I'm probably earning much less (specially initially), might be eventually hired but even hired might be later fired, who knows; and maybe things end up fine and maybe they don't.
So I either pick dull + certain + some money or incertain + initial small ammount + maybe cool
well if it were a pay cut I wouldn't take it :P but I was under the assumption it would be a raise or at least a lateral and being something you like more
!!should @ThatBrazilianGuy pick dull and certain or fun and uncertain
@allquixotic @ThatBrazilianGuy should pick dull and certain
23:39
If it wasn't the money I'd be "to hell with it, I'm taking the chances". But I already owe the bank a little bit more than I'd like to.
:(
!!should I a or b
@allquixotic Both!
!!should I c or d
@allquixotic You should c
!!should I e or f

@Boris_yo Never heard of em
@SmarteymanGeek, @ThatBrazilianGuy isn't following his passions! Even @ChatBotJohnCavil thinks he shouldn't.
@ThatBrazilianGuy: dude. 2 week rule
If you know the basics, you can convince someone you're an expert in anything in 2 weeks ;p
I'd say consider it, and even if you don't, never say its due to a lack of knowledge
There's a considerable ammount of money I'm supposed to receive but ThatBrazilianGvmnt is taking more than 8 years to process the papers and I can't see the green of my money ;_____;
When / if I get it, I'd be so tempted to quit my job to pursue my passions
I applied for a job on short notice, in the middle of the exams, supporting software I had never heard of.
@ThatBrazilianGuy: I made that mistake with google ;p
23:44
What mistake? Quitting your job? Didn't you work at your family business?
I LOVE Pry so much -- when something crashes in my app, the Pry console pops up automatically, and I can literally type wtf? and it'll give me the exception backtrace
then I can poke around, run expressions, change threads, etc
@allquixotic As tempting as it is to believe that, I know I know a little HTML, a teeny tiny speck of CSS, absolutely zero JS and near-zero jQuery, and I smash my head on the keyboard until PHP does (close to) what I want. And I can configure really simple web servers.
@ThatBrazilianGuy so what was the job? doing web development in HTML/CSS/JS?
@allquixotic "Literally", as in there's a wtf command?
@ThatBrazilianGuy Correct. Not only that, but wtf?
methods can contain ? and ! in Ruby
it's wonderfully poetic, because when something crashes, the first thing you think in your mind is "wtf?"
well, it tells you what. .... the fuck. (happened).
23:51
@allquixotic He mentioned "web dev" and "WordPress" and asked for "code samples, free software, plugins and the like" so I assumed HTML/CSS/JS + PHP (specially the WP functions, hooks and filters)
:/
so he was expecting you to have a github repo of plugins you wrote for WP?
So yeah, I'd be clueless. Not "get hired and get working" material, I'd need training
Yeah, looks like, at least a couple. Or W themes. Dunno. Sounds so.
I guess I better spend less time on SU and more time on SO and WP.SE
/me goes buying bulletproof vest
@allquixotic: literally literally?
@ThatBrazilianGuy @ThatBrazilianGuy: the pay's horrible ;p
and my mom bitches anytime I buy anything
@JourneymanGeek "neh neh neh neh neh why do you need that stupid soundcard neh neh neh neh neh!"?
and I'd rather be a small fish somewhere cool, than the underboss (I am beneath you, but nothing is beneath me!)
23:54
I get that even when I'm earning my own money completely independent from my mom
@allquixotic: pretty much ;p
apparently buying anything that isn't food, gas, repair for the car, or stuff that helps around the house is "irresponsible"
@JourneymanGeek stop replying to completely unrelated messages and confusing the hell out of me!!!
;p
PRECISELY
apparently using the same computer for 15 years is supposed to be fine
23:55
@allquixotic: "It still runs!"
(until it dosen't, and I'm bloody scrambling to fix all the things)
@ThatBrazilianGuy he doesn't "reply" to any messages when he's feeling lazy; he just pings your name
s/feeling lazy/on the desktop client
...my original unsubstituted sentence stands
if you're on the desktop client you should be able to reply
not doing so is lazy
23:56
:P
@allquixotic: its easier not to be lazy on chatse ;p
When I hover a non-reply ping, SE chat highliths my last message as if it was a reply to it
!! s/chatse/chatsey/
@allquixotic @allquixotic: its easier not to be lazy on chatsey ;p (source)
@ThatBrazilianGuy yep. you get used to it
it's @JourneymanGeek's specialty :P
23:57
@ThatBrazilianGuy yeah, it does.
at this point I'm used to scrolling up (perhaps by pages) to figure out what he's replying to
But... I was angry at @JourneymanGeek for nothing!
On chatsey its tap tap (click click?) type
@allquixotic I had a friend on high school who would do that in real life. She would reply to you hours or even a day or two later, out of the blue, as if commenting on anything you just said.
@ThatBrazilianGuy: I do that on IRC ;p
23:58
the reply arrows are really cool, in general, because it allows multithreaded conversations to take place with basically no "recontextification" -- if we didn't have reply arrows, and we wanted to follow up an earlier thread, you would have to give enough information for them to know what subject you're on
wait. there was an extension ...
JMG does neither :D
Bob seems never to write a message in chat ever without a reply arrow
and I do it about 50% of the time
@JourneymanGeek I swear that looks like a smile
