I'm having an Indian dinner tonight :D
Black Gram Lentils Curry -- "Dal Bukhara" -- and spicy poppadoms
one made in Chennai, one made in Chankyapuri :P

1 hour later…
I had it. it was good
water, whole black gram lentils, tomato paste, cream, butter, garlic, salt, ginger, red chili powder.... sounds like British influence ;p
lol
Indians use a lot of tomatos.
and some parts of india ALWAYS put ginger garlic and onions in everything
and butter.... more often clarified, but common ingredient ;p
According to Sleep as Android I don't sleep properly :/

Q: I am looking for a software, program like terminal in fedora

PriyeshI am looking for a software, program like terminal in fedora to compile and run programs for win 68bit. i want to compile and run programs just like i m working in fedora... please anyone suggest me. Thank you

windows 8 68 bit?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek He means 86-bit, of course!
and I'm totally unclear if he means 'I need a way to do ./configure , make, make install' or he needs a compiler, or a terminal
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Or "I need a different OS"
"I need to know what I'm doing"
Can anyone suggest good sound speakers that would have cable length between sub-woofer and satellite about 1.5m? The reason I need this is I have height adjustable table which can be lifted up for like up to 1.2m and I would put satellites on table and sub-woofer on the ground. These look good - amazon.co.uk/Edifier-M3300SF-Compact-Speaker-System/dp/… but I don't know what kind of length that cable is...
08:38
if you like the speakers, replace your cables
Bob
Bob
^
Cables are easy.
Cut and crimp/wrap/solder, or just get an extension cable.
If you're an audiophile, you might prefer the former.
actually
smart audiophiles rarely make cables
0_0
WHY IS THE LINE IN A MINI D CONNECTOR?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Eh, bit of a tradeoff. Some might complain about extra noise from the connector. But if you don't do the crimp/wrap/solder right, that could easily be worse.
@Bob: If they are, they are idiots
Bob
Bob
Heh.
"if you're an audiophile"
08:41
quality premade cable is probably as good as anything you can buy
Bob
Bob
Personally, I couldn't care less.
just that quality varies hugely.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It's not the cable quality, it's the connector.
There's lots of cables with dodgy connectors. But lots are perfectly fine, too.
Well I would not consider myself audiophile. I just want some proper sound speakers for my new desktop PC. I don't really want to mess with cutting cables :). But replacing with longer cable might be a better solution. Doesnt it sometimes have cables that can't be replaced (like it can't be unplugged)?
@Bob: oh, I tend to like em fat and moulded in place
Bob
Bob
08:42
D-subminiature connectors are used to carry balanced analog or digital audio on many multichannel professional audio equipment, where the use of XLR connectors is impractical, for example due to space constraints. The most common usage is the DB25, using TASCAM's pinout (now standardised in AES59). To avoid the possibility of bent pins on fixed equipment, the male connector is generally fitted to the cabling and the female connector to the equipment. The DD50 connector usage is described in AES-2id. == Notes and references... ==
@Andrius I guess it depends on the speakers, then.
@Bob: assuming its a standard connector
Bob
Bob
Any halfway-decent speakers should have a removable cable from the subs to the satellites.
I've not seen that on consumer hear before
@Bob: eh, most of them have it wired in
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek That would make positioning them... fun.
I like these amazon.co.uk/Edifier-M3300SF-Compact-Speaker-System/dp/… but I can't tell what kind of cables are those
08:43
@Andrius: the picture I linked was the back of your woofer
oh..:) thanks=]
So I guess I could easly buy longer cable if that one would be too short?
Thats what I'm concerned about
Bob
Bob
Standard RCA, so... sure.
looks like you must use that remote
its PC -> remote -> subwoofer -> speakers
RCA extension cables exist, so you could pop those on your satellites if needed

is it possible to skip that remote control, cause I could care less about it. I would just control sound from my keyboard anyway
@Andrius: that's what I'm trying to work out
ugh, none of these reviews show how its wired up
Its annoying that there so few details about sound speakers. You are like buying cat in a bag..:)

@jou ^:P
I'm trying to choose good printer all in one device for home use. Trying to choose one from goo.gl/MGw6st and goo.gl/0pOa8x
09:29
don't know what is difference
I tend to favour canons ._.
really?
what is reason?
@TuralAliyev: had one for ages, They refill well.
Something worth considering when buying a printer
I suspect the second one is merely an update of the first
yes. but I see difference only in display
and for me display doesn't matter if system is same
Bob
Bob
I'll never touch an Epson again.
Heck, I'd avoid all inkjets if you do much printing at all
09:34
@Bob: meh, I like our pixma
its for home use actually. And laserjet all in one's are too expensive
the current one is a tank, if only it read ink 'properly' like the old models
Yeah you can connect CISS to epsons every time you want and it's good for office use also
Bob
Bob
I've got a Canon B&W MFP, Brother colour laser and HP MFP inkjet.
Of all those, the inkjet gets... no use at all.
Man I wont's use this printer intensively
Bob
Bob
09:35
Thing about inkjets... leave them for too long, the ink dries up. Use them a lot, and you'd pay more for the ink than you would for laser + toner.
its for home use
Bob
Bob
Only real use left for them is photo printing. Inks blend better than colour laser dithering.
I'm buying this for home use actually and laserjets are heavy. the post service will require same money as printer price
Now I'm very confused about canon and epson. becuase on canon's website I see only bad reviews and user experiences about canon products
Bob
Bob
Colour laser MFPs run for something like $100 at the bottom end now :P
I just go pick them up.
shrug

@Bob bob so your opinion is to buy canon/
?

@TuralAliyev That was @JourneymanGeek's suggestion.
@TuralAliyev: mine is. His is to get a laser printer locally

10:04
The most confusing thing is
on every companie's pages
there are lots of bad feedbacks
about inkjets
@JourneymanGeek He's from the future. Samsung invented HeisenRAM, where two particles can coexist at the same place at the same time, so you can have hundreds of layers of normal RAM space-sharing a single stick's volume in classical Newtonian space. you can get more than 18 EB of RAM on a phone nowadays, so they had to increase the address space by a factor of 16 to allow up to 295 EB :P
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: and you can may or may not watch cat videos that were never actually made may or may not ever have been made in 3d?
@JourneymanGeek well. more precisely: cat videos which may or may not have ever been made
and you can watch them in 11-dimensional hyperspace

X-Plane?
Any good?
10:23
I'm probably in the top 0.0001% of users now
Bob
Bob
oh yea, I spun up a Win8.1 VM just so I can use it via RDP on my Android tablet
it actually works pretty well
X-Plane is:
KSP;
on actual Earth;
with actual Earth scenery (very close approximation of actual stuff on the ground, i.e. roads, houses, buildings, etc. in places where they ACTUALLY ARE on the planet -- though it's a ~50 GB data download);
with actual aircraft dynamics;
with human (not kerbal) pilots;
with extremely complicated (hey, aviation is complicated!) rules
Bob
Bob
could do with a lower resolution, though
And it's smoother than native apps on the tablet
shitty piece of crap that it is :P
apparently, Boeing and the FAA and many other very prestigious organizations use a customized X-Plane configuration in a professional setting... they deck out a system with all the real hardware, like a yoke and stuff, and they put X-Plane on a really high-end system, and run it
now granted the $10 million flight sims with wrap-around projection like a real cockpit aren't necessarily made with X-Plane
but X-Plane is an enormous step towards that (assuming you had the hardware), and even if you don't have the hardware, the simulation is hella realistic
also, X-Plane is able to do limited space plane / space shuttle type simulations as well, and there's a space shuttle in the built-in game, but it is primarily designed as an aircraft simulator within the troposphere and stratosphere
10:27
So KSP on uber-steroids then
Bob
Bob
isn't that what happened with nvidia G84/G86 cores?
@Mokubai KSP is a different experience -- I like KSP for different reasons than I like X-Plane
KSP is an honest to god game. X-Plane is not a game (as declared by the devs); it's an as-realistic-as-possible simulator
KSP is supposed to be entertaining and has many genuine "gamey" functions that trade realism for playability
X-Plane doesn't give a fuck what's "fun"; it wants to put you in a goddamn ACTUAL AIRPLANE.
it even has realistic ATC, although at the current release of the game it isn't fully finished yet, so there are no consequences for ignoring the ATC warnings :P
Ah no, I wasn't implying that you would want to choose between them and I can see why, at times, you'd prefer one over the other. But it sounds a lot like similar "games" with one taken to a massive extreme
10:30
@Mokubai well, yeah -- I mean, at some level KSP is a semi realistic simulation of rocketry (and to a lesser degree, aerodynamics, though its aerodynamics are VERY, VERY unrealistic) -- if you aren't used to simulations at all, KSP is super realistic from that perspective.
the extreme realism captured by X-Plane is definitely in a class of its own, though
especially since the scenery data is so comprehensive, it's just incredible
Bob
Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ a realistic one has to make mistakes
if you flew a helicopter at low altitude in X-Plane, you could probably find your house on the ground
provided it's been there for at least several years
Bob
Bob
oh god... aviation safety course, first assignment: write a report on MH370's disappearance
-_-
no, they couldn't have chosen one with concrete facts, could they?
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ won't see my house then ;)
I don't know where they get their data from, but it's probably the same people who made Google Maps
10:32
might see the farmers field it was built on
Navteq or something
TIL that a reasonable rendering of the entire surface of Earth takes about 50 GB of data
and it's not just flat images, either! they actually extrapolate the 2D stuff into 3d renders of vehicles, roads, houses, etc
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ I was just going to ask about that
So it's a bit hella detailed.
If you fly over this way then get a screenie of my unbuilt house ;)
@Mokubai I might! I plan on landing a 787 Dreamliner at Heathrow airport once I figure out how to fly an actual 787
so far I managed to get a 787 airborne, then activated the autopilot to keep me at a steady altitude, but I have no idea where I'm going... I need to program the flight computer so I can fly with the northern currents across the Atlantic!
the autopilot does surprisingly little in a real aircraft... you have to set all kinds of knobs -- air speed, altitude -- all it basically does is keep you level (or it can actually climb at a reasonable rate if that's what you want) and keep you from yawing
My method (of playing a shuttle simulator about 20 years ago) usually involved flicking switches until something happened. Usually the thing just detonated where it was.
10:39
I think the autopilot would be a lot more useful if I could figure out the navigation system.... basically a bunch of waypoints that describe an actual route that a plane would take between two points... usually it's not a perfectly straight line
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ do you get virtual passengers that scream if you turn the plane upside down?
the autopilot could turn the plane and adjust the altitude to keep it following the waypoints
DO A BARREL ROLL!
@Mokubai no virtual passengers that I've seen, but you can walk through the plane's fuselage during flight, which is perfectly safe if the plane is in a stable flight envelope with the autopilot engaged
you can fly straight as long as you have fuel (and yes, there is fuel that realistically counts down, and you can't land safely if you're too heavy, just like a real plane)
Bob
Bob
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ fuel dump!
10:40
@Bob exactly
Bob
Bob
though, without any passengers and luggage, I'm not convinced a full tank of fuel is too heavy to land...
I launched my 787 with about 14 hours of fuel -- near the top end of what the aircraft is capable of carrying, but it could actually take on more fuel because there were no passengers; yes, it is aware of the fact that the plane is lighter with only two people on board (you and a dummy copilot)
a 787 loaded with passengers and cargo probably can't take off with 14 hours of fuel
can you pause? ;p
the game has multiplayer too, and you can have the other person as your copilot
So it doesn't assume you have passengers and their baggage at all
10:42
yes, there's pausing, which pauses the entire state of the game, thankfully. and saving and loading.
Sitting for 14 hours straight at a computer can't be fun healthy
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ Sounds like it could be amusing
@Mokubai correct, but there's a configuration option for everything -- you can set the "bulk" weight with a slider... you can even adjust whether the plane is unbalanced or not (to make for more chalelnging conditions)
granted, setting the weight to be quite heavy doesn't make passengers magically appear
they leave that to your imagination
or future addon ;p
you can even have random 'drunken passenger' events!
You could be flying to heathrow and tell the co-pilot to take over while you nap and end up in manilla..
Are there "missions" and stuff?
10:44
@Mokubai no missions, since the game is not about fun. you make up your own "missions" in your head by setting personal goals for what you want to accomplish
oh, did I mention it supports AI-driven modern jet fighter combat in this same realistic simulator?
with realistic ordnance?
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ They give you the entire earth to fly around and don't give you people...
2
AI-driven or multiplayer, in fact
Bob
Bob
@Mokubai you're the last one
or maybe no-one trusts you to fly safely
so in theory you could pit a state of the art Russian jet fighter against a state of the art American jet fighter, while the American is in America and the Russian is in Russia :P (high latency tho)
@Bob Well that'd be a fair comment in my case ;)
10:46
you don't pit an American fighter against a British fighter though
that's just not a fair fight; the Brit has no chance
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: the brits are supposed to have really good pilots though
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ We'd hide in the valleys in our Harriers and pounce when you least expect it
(and the planes they fly are pretty good at some very specific tasks)
@Mokubai: do you still have those? I thought they were navy air arm
and you lot temporarily don't have any carriers
RAF has some but iirc they were being slowly decomissioned
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: depends on the fighter - the backbone of your airforce is still 70s era fighters
10:48
@Mokubai yeah but harriers are subsonic! good luck avoiding a supersonic missile when you can't even break the sound barrier
You guys don't have too many F22s, and the f35 ... is a bit of a messup
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: stay at the treeline, pop up and shoot ;p
If I had the money my garage would have both an SR-71 and a Harrier in it
You cannot hit what you cannot see.
it wouldn't be a garage ;p
@JourneymanGeek the F35 is a white elephant -_- way too expensive for what it is
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: precisely
they should probably not have killed off the f22 line IMO
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: and the 'best' F15s, F15Es and F16s arn't american
10:50
@JourneymanGeek 187 F22s in service.
I suspect we have the best f15E varient, and one of the middle eastern countries has the best 16s.
Not counting whatever mods the Israelis made to theirs
ahh UAE, my bad
187 F22s should be enough in the event of a Cylon nuclear attack; it was enough for Adama
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: yeah, and a shut down production line.
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: I suppose you do have more carriers ;p
the US's nuclear-powered carrier fleet always reminded me of the Empire's ISDs in Star Wars
10:55
and yet we built one just recently, still based on the oooooooooold Nimitz design, and launched it, named after George Herbert Walker Bush
...not my favorite President
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: bush senior wasn't too bad
and IIRC the two most recent ones are a subclass
besides, how can you improve on carrier design?
You can go russkie and build a carrier/battleship, or go smaller
those things are NEVER going to be stealthy
@JourneymanGeek well, to start off with, EMALS catapults, which are safer and more efficient
you can make everything electronic
you can convert 20th-century AA machine guns or whatever into AA guided missile launchers
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: I think thats a planned upgrade
meh, missiles are expensive
and guns are good for close in anti missile work
battleships are totally obsolete at this point; for sea-to-surface fire support you've got ballistic missiles, which are cheaper than guided because they have no guidance system
besides, long range AA defence is escort work
10:59
or bombers (FOAB...)
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: I disagree on that.
@JourneymanGeek which modern navy operates a traditional battleship with gun or howitzer based defenses? and in what world would they be able to sustain a confrontation when their enemies' missiles far exceed the range that they can lob shells?
the only "gun" type explosive kinetic weapon that could be useful in the future is one of those rail guns :P
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: ship to ship, its pointless
if you're trying to take a surface target...
and with modern tech, you can probably direct fire a lot more effectively
don't forget, the US military nearly always has overwhelming superiority in a war they are in
@JourneymanGeek true, but "taking a surface target" on the modern battlefield usually doesn't constitute shooting enormous explosives at things and laughing as all the civvies scramble
usually with the US they try to do precision strikes... terrorism and all
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: War is breaking things and killing people
Unfortunately.
Anyone who assumes otherwise is deluded.
Precision strikes often arn't, and in some cases, you do need excessive force.
the big issue with battleships is really that they are vulnerable
but that's true of a carrier as well
11:05
terrorism would be a lot worse if we'd just go lob shells indiscriminately at them.... it's bad enough with us at least trying to minimize civilian casualties... they hate us enough as is... there would be no benefit to reducing our precision / increasing our destructive force, even if it turned out to be cheaper to do so
unless your goal is simply genocide and wiping out the entire country so there's no one left to hate you
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: eh, my views on terrorism is... "make the leaders pay. Personally"
but I'm talking conventional war here
The carrier is a large mobile base. Its a bit of a swiss army knife, and it happens to be perfect for launching precison strikes.
I'm thinking a more traditional war with slightly more clearly laid out enemies
with terrorism... I think the solution really is deathbots.
@JourneymanGeek problem is, a "traditional war" between nation-states that doesn't go nuclear is not terribly likely to happen
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: eh, it keeps happening
at least every 20 years or so.
the cold war was barely anything in terms of actual action, and Desert Storm was really an intro to terrorism
@ÃŁŁǫǛȉЖΦΤїҪ: I disagree there
desert storm was a classic limited conventional war
I think if the US told saddam "dude, there's terrorists there" He'd gladly have joined the americans
and god, they fucked that one up
11:23
(and eh. I'm sadly old fashioned when it comes to geopolitics)
12:14
