@MichaelFrank hehe
I love those question chains.
03:45
@MichaelFrank When putting in my own SSD, I reduced the writes to it some, so it wasnt rediculous unnessisary writing, but i never understood the idea of (basically) stopping all the writing that would go to it as best as one can. Either you put the thing in for speed, which means it is going to be USED, or it is a glorified storage device for the mostly unused part of the OS. Heck with that, Put it in Back-up what is on it and USE it for the speed it offers.
Sure it would not be so good to apply it for something like Paging, but then what would be the point of having slower HDD paging, if the point of the SSD was to speed things up. I could even see where i would rather have it for hibernating, if i ever hibernated. Sure it is going to write lots and lots like that, so what if it speeds stuff up.
04:05
There are perfect things that are write once read many, like programs and games, speeding up level loading and all, but in most installs that isnt going to use the whole thing. So there is net caches, temps, although it is the worst of write once read once things, still going to help speed stuff up, some stuff by quantities. When it came time to shift all that stuff back to the HD, I had to keep wondering Why , when a program using temps can be much slower for its whole operations time.

2 hours later…
05:43
imgur.com/a/R5c3i you get an "excellent" performance boost from using those flash chips in readyboost ? superuser.com/questions/755611/… criminey that has to be the worst speeds i have seen in flash chunks. Wonder what happens if he should get some real speed.
""I thought this may be the case but i don't know why the problem would only suddenly be apparent"" Well remember when you pissed off your GF :-)
06:13
@Psycogeek USB 3.0 ?
06:23
@HackToHell I dont have 3.0 yet for any of my cards. But i 89% use cards and readers, vrses sticks, because sticks usually do not have much speed information shown before buying.
Then of course the speed info on cards is 1/2 fraud too. Like i have some slower sandisk (real sandisk) that is faster than some winteck or other brands .
06:43
@JourneymanGeek There is no third party app on App Store?

Q: How to log into Windows if I have deleted the EFI partition?

Rifaz NahiyanI've run into a problem while experimenting. I deleted my EFI partition while installing Ubuntu. I had Windows 8.1 pre-installed. I installed Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. Ubuntu runs fine. But there are no files of Windows on the EFI partition. I need now to have Windows boot files in the EFI partition. S...

did you see the question I linked earlier?
Yup. It was to be solved using Windows.
I cant boot into my Widnows.
don't have a recovery disk also.
I have the recovery partition intact though. Just cannot access it.
09:21
Interesting, ping from my phone is ~70 ms'
From my PC is 300ms
Same network
OMFG Tunnel Bear is running without a GUI
fucking shit
;p
is that bad or good/
ahh
09:45
is facebook allowed to sell my e-mail and phone number to third party company?
10:05
"We may allow service providers to access information so they can help us provide services."
what does that mean? exactly?...
@sammyg I read it, generally it seems to say the same thing a lot of other say. We serve the ads, we only serve up enough info to the advertisers to sell and place the ads. In these sitatuons them not being a 3rd party in between, looses them money.
If they provided the advertisers direct contact to the users, then facebook is no longer nessisary in the process.
So how is that going to make them money.
@sammyg This statement seems to be the usual beutifully placed all encompasing privacy breech found in many of the TOUs, that could easily cover anything leaked for money.
I think the intent of it though would be to cover all the "web services" service providers , that they end up working with. As it would not be advantageous to facebook to be handing out private data to general advertisers.
Like all contracts, it is never the Users or the consumers making them, so how a consumer thinks that adhering to or signing any contracts of any sort has anything to do with them :-) is beyond me. After all the leagaleses BS we are constantally endowed with, it is about time the User start writing the contracts :-)
10:31
@Psycogeek They allow the third party to pay for "information".
"This means, for example, that you permit a business or other entity to pay us to display your name and/or profile picture with your content or information, without any compensation to you."
That's so disturbed..
and they often toss around the word "information" which doesn't say shit about what it is
Our goal is to become more stinkey rich than we already are, we are not going to accomplish that by giving everything away for free, and not selling it :-)
@Psycogeek yes, but there has to be a limit... no?
and laws to obey?
All i had to ever know was A) is it free to use? B) do they have more money than i will ever have? Then it must =C) You got something they want, and eventually they are going to get it.
so it's best to hold back on as much "information" as possible, i.e. not give them "information" that is optional
the thing is, i got sms spam from canada
"We need to talk. Please contact me on this email: [email protected] now if you can. Thank you."
@sammyg Well that is just the thing, I do not know of any laws that requires anyone to protect an adults privacy, most of the stuff has been keeping info private as a feature.
10:40
others did too
i usually don't give away my phone number easily
facebook is my main suspect
the number is +1-519-694-4794
did a white page reverse lookup and found it to be registered in London, Ontario, Canada
"A very useful add-in, but if it could be installed without restarting Firefox, it would be perfect."
Should Office Space guy say it? :D
I found it even more odd that the Bank (supposed to be trusted institution) hands out all relevent loan information to various agencies that pay the bank to aquire it. It couldnt get any odder when the bank Sold the information directally to thier own competititor. With the compititor having all information including loan ammount, paid up or not monthy payment, taxes , phone number and address.
@Boris_yo Milton?
It even more amazed me when nobody said Shit about thier bank handing out thier info in whole.
10:45
"Yea, if you could just go ahead and install without trying to restart anything. That'd be great."
@MichaelFrank +1
Yeah, if you could just go and kill yourself. That'd be great.
So i read the contract , and sure enough the bank (most trusted finantial institution) has right in the contract that they will (not can) sell your information.
That movie was... interesting. It also reaaaaaaaaallllllly annoyed me for some reason.
@MichaelFrank I need to watch it. That'd be great
@Psycogeek A bank won't do it's own market research. It will sell the info off to someone who will do it for them.
10:47
@Psycogeek just for the record, what bank was this?
Right but what was odd is they had sold the loan info to many other sellers of loans, who end up calling trying to get the home loan transfered to thier instituion. In my mind it wasnt as bad a privacy breech as the stupident thing business wise.
@Psycogeek Ahh yea. That's not cool at all.
I'd love to stay and bash on uncool banks. But I gotta get some sleep.
Night all!
i bet it was a us bank
@MichaelFrank night! sleep well!
@sammyg Yes it was some US bank. right now the same loan is with Wells Fargo, one of the richest and most powerfull. but i would have to read the contract again, to know thier policy. Just like websites these loans get passed around on paper, and the original "contracts" or agreements get policy changed via the new holding institution.
So If i provide information to any website, I woul do so understanding that it may get sold. When sold they will often have a new arrangements the user will see. But then again who reads all the TOUs ?
Speaking of updated TOUs , e-bays tou has changed more times than i have sold things on e-bay ?? So really how the heck can anybody keep up totally with this stuff?
@Psycogeek most people don't read terms of service, not even for banking services
everyone just expects the company, bank or institution to use best practice, and follow the law, and to work in your own best interest, as a paying customer
10:59
@sammyg All in all it is just more $$$ circle jerks. much and much money to be made without the actual manufacture or a product or existance of a service. I do not see that the US economy is going to change for the better at any time soon, until there is more "work" done not shuffling paper, and creating money from an alogrythm (datacoins), and stuff like that.
i'm not sure what it is about US companies, banks, etc. and why they have these privacy issues, and people complaining about it all the time... perhaps it is the cash that's driving it all
not even the government respects privacy there
some 10 years ago, this was never a major concern with european companies or banks
but i get the feeling that the US has influenced other companies, banks, whatever... to follow in their footsteps
Bleh, mom accidentally hibernated and now the Windows Boot Loader is corrupted
Stupid Windows corrupts the boot loader every time I hibernate
europe should stop trying to be more like the us... if anything, us should be more like europe
@HackToHell now i'm confused... i thought it was your mom =/
@sammyg It was my mom this time, but I have done it before
@HackToHell tried to repair it?
11:12
@sammyg nope, don't have a flash drive
Ill get one tomorrow
With Ubuntu for now
@HackToHell is this windows 7?
if it's windows 7, you should be able to do a startup repair without any extra stuff like usb flash drive or bootable windows media
you need to access the advanced boot options menu
@sammyg It never gets to that part, just reboots
annoying, this shit has happened befire
ok, can you boot into windows at all?
@HackToHell have you tried the F8 key?
@HackToHell press F8 to see if you can get to the advanced boot options menu, and select "Repair Your Computer"
11:27
I found one more facebook privacy giveaway in the PDF (that lists changes) Meticulously placed below "memorialised accounts" Dead people is this. "Affiliates
We  may  share  information  we  receive  with  businesses  that  are  legally  part  of  the  same  group  of
companies  that  Facebook  is  part  of,  or  that  become  part  of  that  group  (often  these  companies
are  called  affiliates).  Likewise,  our  affiliates  may  share  information  with  us  as  well.  This  sharing
is  done  in  compliance  with  applicable  laws  including  where  such  applicable  laws  require
@HackToHell if you are dualbooting Ubuntu and Windows 7, select Windows 7 from the os menu (grub2), and rapidly press F8 to get the advanced boot options menu
@HackToHell also, make sure that when you dualboot windows 7 and ubuntu, you first install windows 7, and then ubuntu... this might be part of your problem
Beings someday all these business will be owned by one big US conglomerate called GooTwitBookTube , this means eventually everyone will have everything from everywhere.
@Psycogeek pdf link?
@sammyg facebook.com/legal/dupredline on this page was a link. to the PDF that shows the original vrses the updated in one of them changes files. (like a Edited SU post).
@Psycogeek eventually, we will all be controlled by dr. evil corporation
11:39
@sammyg Which would fail but then it will be "To Big To Fail" youtube.com/results?search_query=to+big+to+fail and the endless assessments of how that worked for anyone who doesnt already know.
The only US monopoly laws that really exist are the trade laws, which just suggest that without competition there isnt fair trade going on, and we can be price gouged and all. I do not think anyone had anticipated that whole cities would become dependant on the existance of some company. and that company collapsing sending that city back into the (detroit) dark ages :-)
That Insurance was a "gamble" a risk proposal. it was rather odd when they bailed out the gamblers because they spent more time in colleting everyones money, than assuming the odds. But then they Bail out the gamblers.
Really there were not a lot of honest services that were bailed out, if you include the car companies, who had replaced all the employees long ago with robots made in japan and china :-0
thats the one.
11:55
@Psycogeek "I do not think anyone had anticipated that whole cities would become dependant on the existance of some company." Those who did, nobody listened to anyway.

I wanted to clone android.googlesource.com/kernel/goldfish but all the time my connection resets and I have to clone it all over again.
I found [here](http://stackoverflow.com/a/3957733) that ,
> Use shallow clone i.e. git clone --depth=1, then deepen this clone using git fetch --depth=N, with increasing N. You can use git fetch --unshallow (since 1.8.0.3) to download all remaining revisions.
So I wrote this script ,
N=1
git clone --depth=$N https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/goldfish.git
while [ $N -gt 0 ]; do
N=$((N+1))
git fetch --depth=$N https://android.googlesource.com/kernel/goldfish.git
echo $N
done
this works but I dont know if this is correct and the size of goldfish doesn't seem to increase.
Does it do what I think it will do , or am I wrong ?
wow typing :-) in winders we would just get some kind of spider or leeching program, aim and shoot, resume as needed.
(works for porn :-) at least

@RifazNahiyan Grab a Windows recovery (or install) CD, and use that to repair your installation. Don't do it again.

what is roughly, the price of a 'dead' laptop? my brother has a laptop having overheating issues, and it's there since 3 years.., I'll try to clean it again, but it seems really damaged.
If it's really not working, we'd like to sell it, maybe 50€/ $69, as a sum of its working components, seems fair?
Bob
Bob
@cc Depends entirely on the laptop's specs.
But don't expect to get much from it.
@Bob, thanks. Will a recovery disk of Windows 7 do?

You might be better off scavenging parts yourself and selling them.
c c
c c
Some people are ready to buy it on a whole, and that's easier..
Bob
Bob
@RifazNahiyan Hm. I'm not sure... last time I tried a 7 + 8 VHD dual boot, it required hte 8 bootloader.
@cc Well, it has 4 GB of DDR3 SODIMM RAM, which is worth ~$30 new. Maybe $20 used.
c c
c c
hehe, some old RAM, with low frequencies..
Bob
Bob
The CPU, motherboard, etc., depends on who's buying, but can only be used to repair similar models and is quite outdated, so probably isn't worth much.
Other things... pretty much just for repair of similar models.
The 500 GB HDD would be worth something new, but a used HDD is iffy.
Personally, I'd just scavenge what parts I can for my other machines :P
c c
c c
ok, so less than 100€/ $138 for sure, I'd say 50€ /$69 is fair :)

Bob

12:30
@cc Basically, the other parts often cost upwards of $30, sometimes $50-$100, if you wanted to buy them to do repairs. The problem is finding a buyer :P
@cc Eh, that doesn't mean it's broken!
In fact, there's likely a good reason XP won't install.
Drivers.
It's a 2002 OS you're trying to shove onto a 2010 machine.
The most common issue is XP has no built-in support for SATA/AHCI hard drives, and a 2010 HDD is almost certainly one.
c c
c c
@Bob nah, but even with windows7 or ubuntu, it was crashing
Bob
Bob
You have to slipstream some AHCI drivers.

@Bob yes power off, it shutdown after 10 to 60minutes
Bob

12:32
If it powers off, then it's likely overheating.
But could be other issues too, bleh.
@cc Can you monitor temperatures?
Apart from cleaning, if you feel up to it you can try reapplying the thermal transfer paste between the CPU and heatsink.
c c
c c
yes, good idea, once i install Xp for example, I'll put some software
Bob
Bob
(Assuming they don't use a pad...)
@cc If you can't keep it on long enough to install XP, just boot from an Ubuntu CD and keep track of temps.
See how high it goes. See where it powers off.
c c
c c
ok
Bob
Bob
It's an easy way to tell if it is overheating, or some other issue.
I mean, you could sell it, but you could also try to fix it and keep it around if you have a use for it :P

@cc It's still good enough for many things.

@cc Arctic Silver 5 is probably the most common.
There's a bunch of others, and people argue over the effectiveness :P
@Bob, is there a way to fix my problem using grub2 only? And no windows recovery disk, or the like?
Bob
Bob
@RifazNahiyan No.
Windows relies on its own bootloader.
You can chainload BOOTMGR from GRUB. You can chainload GRUB from BOOTMGR.
But BOOGMGR can't directly load vmlinux/vmlinuz, just as GRUB can't directly load winload.
@Bob will that work for Windows 8.1?
Bob
Bob
You may be able to get BOOTMGR installed without the recovery disk, but that's the easiest way.
@RifazNahiyan It should.
I'm a bit iffy on UEFI, but in a UEFI system you shouldn't need to chainload anyway.
The UEFI controller should let you select a bootloader, if you installed it properly.
BOOTMGR chainloading GRUB is easy. Use EasyBCD or Visual BCD Editor. GRUB chainloading BOOTMGR is also easy. There's dozens of tools that will set that up automatically for you.
@cc Heck, if you can open it you might find a wad of dust in the fan.
Happened to my brother's laptop :\
@Bob, Okay, I'll try that. Lets see.
c c
c c
12:49
Hehe, yes ok, thanks @Bob
Bob
Bob
@RifazNahiyan You have to have both installed properly first. And I only really know for BIOS, not UEFI :\
you can see where they take the plate off the CPU
if you want to try changing the thermal paste, you can do it there
clean the old gunk off
use isopropyl alcohol (90% or higher)
apply a tiny bit (look up some videos, @JourneymanGeek had a great link...)
c c
c c
yep, maybe the fan wasn't even running..
Bob
Bob
@cc hehe, that's what happened with my brother
he couldn't hear the fan anymore
a massive thumb-sized wad of dust jamming the fan

I am like Wtf is an EFI partition :-) Am i supposed to have one of dem.
@Ps
I think all the laptops made after 2010 were UEFI(~EFI).
UEFI is the next version of BIOS, you can say.
But a hell lot messy.
I wouldn't say its messy
Bios was limited ;p
13:45
@RifazNahiyan i got UEFi, but i cheated and went legasy. I thought that linux peoples might be choosing that route too? but i dont do linux.
Very true... It was limited.
But you cant deny the pain it gives you if you want to dual boot.
@Psycogeek, well I'm sticking with UEFI. Gotta learn it.
plus, there's benefits of using UEFI.
like @Journeyman said, its less limited :P
@RifazNahiyan like first time the bios can get a really decent virus in it :-)
@sammyg I have already tried it all
Doesn't work

Digitised monkey brains? I thought they didnt have "The Internet" in the 70's :-0
15:09
why do I feel like DigitalOcean is overpriced? I have a certain feeling like other hosters are alot cheaper, or am I wrong there?
like, I can find hosting plans with the same base stats as DO's 10$ plan down to 4.xx$
but what do I need to look out for?
@CBenni when you're shopping for VPSes especially, you have to make sure to read their acceptable usage policy
many VPSes will cut you off or do something else equally nasty (like kill your process) if you hog a CPU core for more than 1 minute or so
yeah, especially since I am running a IRC bot on the server
and the VPSes that say "you can use all of your cores 100% of the time, that's what this is designed for" tend to be very highly priced
but I asked Host1Plus and Vultr support
ah
yeah on my DO server I have an average of 10% CPU usage
so, I think I dont need their 100% guarantee
does anyone have experience with Vultr servers? the 100% increase on first payment would allow me to pay the server costs for the next year here and now
so changed up my browser so it opens super user and root access when i open it... I want to be active again aha, i miss this place
15:16
@CBenni nope, but DelimiterVPS seems good; I have a dedicated server with them but they also offer VPSes
I am not exactly sure what I need tho - the app mainly runs a database, so I guess SSD is great for low latency
I am considering using RamNodes SSD-Cached stuff
are you currently having performance problems with what you have now?
Not really , no
but I feel like I am paying too much
Bob
Bob
Heh.
I just remembered I bought one of these things at some point: ebay.com.au/itm/…
It sounds better than my laptop's built-in speakers :P (@JourneymanGeek)
@CBenni @allquixotic A lot of the cheaper hosts aren't as reliable.
If something goes down, it's down.
AWS, for example, has a fair bit of redundancy.
Your instance will survive some physical hosts failing.
I think...
yeah, server uptime is important to me
Bob
Bob
15:29
@CBenni how important is the question
100% is literally impossible
Yeah, its not like I need 5-9s or anything
but like, if the server is down for a whole day, thats absolutely inacceptable
Bob
Bob
@CBenni That's generally unlikely, even with the cheaper hosts.
At least, without warning.
Even just a 5 minute downtime can hurt me, if I dont realize the downtime and the server application doesnt start properly
yeah, I guess
Bob
Bob
I have seen a few server migrations, etc.
Those can take up to a day at times :\
gah
That should not happen with Cloud hosted VPSes, should it?
Bob
Bob
15:32
@CBenni I don't know how DO operates, but it's unlikely with AWS :P
@CBenni Uh... depends.
"cloud" is used as a random buzzword more often than not
take a look at what they actually do :P
also, a thing I am unsure about is how my app reacts to multiple CPU cores. you know, because SQLite
Bob
Bob
yes, that is often what "cloud VPS" means, but it is by no means a standardised term
@CBenni unless you explicitly multithread, it'll only use a single core
I should seriously migrate to MySQL for the website, but that is so much work
well, apache multithreads
Bob
Bob
SQLite can be configured to be threadsafe
but if the calling app doesn't use multiple threads, SQLite won't either
it's a library
not a service/daemon
If reliability is that important, research a good host with a good uptime guarantee and ask what happens if they have a hardware failure (PSU blows up in one server? mobo spontaneously fails? HDD/SSD dies?)
If you really want to be sure, you can get more than one VPS from different providers
set one up as primary, the other as secondary
the primary is the one that usually runs
@Bob eh, my laptop speakers an't half bad
the sound card though...
Bob
Bob
15:36
replicate the db from primary to secondary
the secondary checks primary status, say, every minute. if it's been down for 2-3 mins, it takes over
something like that
(then you have to deal with the primary going back up, etc., etc.)
basically, never rely on a single location or VPS host. if your uptime is that important anyway
what happens if an earthquake hits their DC? hurricane? meteor strike?
well yeah bob
Bob
Bob
heck, you could probably do this with two cheap hosts and come out fairly well :P
or a good primary and cheap secondary
theres a thing called "money" that I am worried about xD
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, Beats :P
@CBenni eh, 2x cheap vps...
yeah ;p
but then again, I am kinda picky with music playback, and my gear is mildly overkill ;p
15:39
I will try to stay below $10 - with something scalable
like, I would be happy with what I have right now
Bob
Bob
@CBenni eh, if DO costs $5/month, you can get two instances in different locations
if there wasnt so many other hosts that appear to be cheaper
Bob
Bob
or you can grab a couple of these: lowendbox.com/blog/…
@CBenni You could get one BlueVM and one ChicagoVPS and do the primary/secondary thing if you felt like it :P lowendbox.com/blog/…
though it does complicate things
yeah I dont think I need 2 servers
Bob
Bob
your other option is to just stick with one of the more reliable ones
15:44
how do I know which are reliable?
Bob
Bob
Performance, price, reliability. Choose two.
@CBenni Eh, again, ask what happens in the event of physical hardware failure.
ill take something in between xD
Bob
Bob
Ask the provider.
What policies do they have in place?
What happens to your instance?
mh yeah ill have to ask them
Bob
Bob
Does it get transparently migrated to a different physical server ("cloud")?
Does it go down until they manually fix it?
But multiple servers in multiple physical locations will always be more reliable in the face of natural disasters than in a single location.
Heh.
15:48
@Bob yeah, since this is a hobby project of sorts (as of now, all donations and stuff I get go into server costs), I will probably not worry too much about downtimes and stuff, however I dont know how much of a problem they actually pose
and I fear committing myself to a 1 year plan and then being disappointed
Bob
Bob
@CBenni again, if you want to save money, I gave you some options last time and there's more above this time
if you want reliability, stick with DO, ask them what they do, etc.
yeah. I am having trouble deciding. I should just stop asking and just do stuff. Sorry for bothering you with this, im just very new and unsure
Bob
Bob
@CBenni flip a coin
decide if it's worth saving however much to save
read reviews
dive in
bleh.
@JourneymanGeek "mildly" :P
Well, I guess you don't have magic pebbles (yet).

@allquixotic took them about an hour to get the sites back up in read-only
I think read-only can be considered 'operational' for the purpose of determining downtime
17:15
@Bob except for sites where writing something to the site is the core function of the site
is google.com (search) operational if you can't search? :P
"google.com is in read-only mode; look at our art!"

Bob
@allquixotic well, search doesn't involve writing! :P
except for tracking/stats purposes
@allquixotic they have a sweet rubik's cube doodle right now :D

According to the zeitgeist documentation, “zeitgeist is a service which logs the user's activities and events (files opened, websites visited, conversations held with other people, etc.) and makes the relevant information available to other applications. It serves as a comprehensive activity log and also makes it possible to determine relationships between items based on usage patterns.”

I put out seeds for vegetables in my garden today. That's some crazy shit. You buy a single seed package for salad for like 2€ and it's good for 500 plants. 500! Who is going to eat 500 salads?

@OliverSalzburg How many will actually grow?
@MichaelFrank One of my friends told me that pretty much every seed will grow a plant
You usually have to rip several of them out so that some can grow. Otherwise there is not enough space
20:55
I also planted cucumber seeds, and the pack said that it's good for only 10 plants. So I don't think they're exaggerating
Yea, but cucumber grows much like pumpkin does. You wouldn't want 500 cucumber plants in your backyard!
I also don't want 500 salads
I've never planted my own vegetables, so this is a first for me. I have no idea how some of these plants grow
21:23
@OliverSalzburg The only thing we're growing at the moment is strawberries.
And they pretty much take care of themselves.
I have a ton of dandelions in there still. Have been working on weeding those out over the past weeks
I'm really excited over growing my own food now though :D
It's fun if you can put the time in to keep the garden tidy.

Us two talking with each other is very confusing on a gravatar level
I like it! :D

Q: Can a Military-Grade wipe harm an SSD?

zyboxenterprisesI recently sold my 128GB Crucial M4 SSD (I have a much larger capacity OCZ SSD, which is faster), and need to wipe the drive. I know that the 'toughest' wipe that can be done is a 35 zero-write military-grade 'nuke', which essentially wipes the data on the drive 35 times over. I wouldn't normal...

Q: How do you deal with software anomalies?

Simon KuangThis is the sort of question that might on other sites be a soft-question, but I think it's not so subjective that it's useless. When you encounter psuedo-bugs in a piece of software (example), what is the best way to react to them? Examples: Every once in a while Chrome completely messes up ...

Pretty sure the opening sentence just killed this question.
