A: Who is that Canadian Luke guy?

Canadian LukeHe's a guy who likes to help out apologize drink beer, named Luke, from Canada. His comments are supposed to be constructive, or thankful, as seen above. His comments do not infect protected computers that have adequate antivirus and antimalware programs. He recommends Common Sense 2.0 (Windows)...

Someone downvoted my answer :( I'll never get that Gold badge now
Aaaaand, it's done
@Zoredache Thanks for VTCing that question, and fulfilling your duties!
> put on hold as off-topic by your mother 1 min ago
@allquixotic Closed by a Meta user? Weird ;)
I still think the funniest part of that question was this
i searched "canada" in the VTC dupe search box and picked the third item randomly
:( @Mokubai deleted it
Oh well, fun over
I had my fingers in my ears singing "tralalalala" as long as I could...
19:09
LOL I know @Mokubai
And @allquixotic I VTC the question you linked to, product recommendation/opinion question
same thing happened with SU's April 1 question
Sathya was all tralalalalalalala until April 2
then bam
It was funny as heck tho, loved that dupe recommendation
But this wasn't April Fools! It's "Canadian Fool[s]"
Awww now no one will see my Boozy Maple Syrup edit. Truly Canadian. :)
yes, Microsoft's CEO deleted our april 1 question
19:11
@CanadianLuke Isn't that like saying Canadian Canadian? ;P
you can tell it's Friday and we want to go home
3
from this entire chat
@allquixotic You should program a regex for John C as a permanent function that runs after each message: s/Sathya/**Microsoft's CEO
@CanadianLuke :P
You know, it's days like this that I wonder why I'm not kicked from here...
I think I'm going to change my name to "CanadianGordie", just because it's way more Canadian than "CanadianLuke". ;)
19:14
@techie007 Canadian McKenzie!
Cause who's more Canadian than them? (And don't say the Native Canadians)
I might change my display name now that I don't need the "name recognition" from the election
@allquixotic Wanna switch usernames? Confuse the heck out of everyone?
"Just started feedin' him the right-left"
19:17
Ok I gotta go hit a branch and fix their TV.. C'YAll L8a -- ya hosers.
See ya @techie007
Depends... Are we changing our DPs as well?
@CanadianLuke DPs?
Display Pictures
oh. i dunno. if you want to ;p that would be hilarious
Great way to start a weekend...
Need your Display Picture's URL though
19:24
one sec :)
Hmmm... Someone from China keeps getting new IPs in the same range, trying to SSH into my server
@CanadianLuke very common, all my boxes get that too
just use very strong passwords or pubkeys
and fail2ban
I got 12 of their dynamic IPs trying to access a root account that only allows a public key
Fail 2 Ban wasn't working for me. This new script actually adds the IP addresses to my /etc/hosts.deny file
OK, I'm gonna log off, and see if it finally changes
Ahhh, much better than clearing my cookies... Oh well
@allquixotic hey allquixotic, you always help me, so how about this one: I'm trying to install Windows 7 on a blank HDD and it doesn't work. HALP
superuser.com/tags/canadian-luke/info <-- According to that, you didn't tag your question properly. Try again
@CanadianLuke Did you check your flux capacitor?
@allquixotic what's a flux capacitor?
man 8 flux-capacitor
19:38
I don't do top secret spy stuff for a living; I just do IT at a school
oh, sorry, I didn't know about man, thanks!
You get better results than using the woman command
I'll have to write a blog post on Talk About IT! about the man command
I think that would be a good idea. Want me to proof read it before you post?
Yeah, that would be great; you can clean up all my terrible n00bish inaccuracies and such, and de-Canadianify the mannerisms and sayings so the audience isn't taken aback
I'll remove all the u's after the o's
19:42
So mouse would be mose? Makes sense
Exactly!
BRB, grabbing a <s>beer</s> tea
ok... now there's too much blue here... huh? @CanadianLuke is not blue but @allquixotic is?!
!! s/<\/?s>/---/g
@CanadianLuke That didn't make much sense. Use the !!/help command to learn more.
@CanadianLuke No matching message (are you sure we're in the right room?)
@allquixotic ---msg--- tsk
19:43
@CanadianLuke BRB, grabbing a beer tea (source)
@Braiam I decided to give him my mod powers because I conceded that he is a better Super User than I am
(and a better Freelancer at that)
Just watching Pacific Rim and I fecking swear that they got the woman who did the voice of GlaDOS to do the computer voice in this....
@Mokubai Well, she would need future employment after the apparent ending of the Portal plot line, right?
@CanadianLuke She has two robots perfectly capable of performing tests
20:11
@allquixotic I know, but I live pretty close to a military airstrip. Not a good idea to mess around with signaling mirrors here :-) Last year a farmer, about half a mile from here, got into trouble because he used strips of aluminum foil to enhance a scare-crow. The fine was bigger than the bird-damage to his crops. — Tonny 1 min ago
@allquixotic He's replying to a good, insightful comment by you. As usual.
of course lolz
@CanadianLuke Weren't you some sort of Windows SBS expert?
I need to figure out how to incorporate Talk About IT into more of my comments and answers. Having eyes on my site is very important.
@OliverSalzburg ...Uh... Sure! >_>
*hastily googles Windows SBS*
@CanadianLuke :D
wtf
Who am I talking to?
20:17
@OliverSalzburg Me!
After a quick F5, I now see the right avatar :P
@allquixotic Tell him it's me!

Q: SBS VPN no longer working after migration to new server

Oliver SalzburgOur SBS 2011 recently had some hardware trouble, so we decided to migrate everything to a new server which we also installed with SBS 2011. Since the migration, I've been having trouble to get our VPN to work. The connection fails with the following error dialog: So I checked out the Security...

There is the problem!
Hmm. I haven't experienced that particular problem before, sorry. Although, @allquixotic could probably answer it off the top of his head. He's so smart.
@CanadianLuke Yeah, but he'll probably make me feel all stupid :P
20:21
its fine oliver. ill try my bst

Talk about IT!
Canadian Luke – A quick FAQ
LukeB
1399667146
@allquixotic I thought your question was funny, so I posted it on Talk About IT.
@CanadianLuke I'd be happy to write for you! can you accept my non-canadian grammar rules though?
@allquixotic You'll have to knock off the "z", but other than that, it should be fine :)
ok!
@OliverSalzburg get it working?
20:42
@allquixotic Removing the English group didn't do it :\
I asked, minimized the window, then the phone buzzed about your message!
Still the same error in event log as well
@allquixotic The other two policies above it seem to match with what was defined in the policies on the previous server (which is still running btw)
There are a lot of settings in each policy, so it's hard to grab a screenshot
But I assumed that these policies are actually created when you enable VPN access through the SBS console
They are, but just wanted to check if they were mucked with at all
I didn't mess with them
But, did Windows?
20:47
But I looked through them to see if there was anything that looks weird
@allquixotic No idea, this morning, the SBS console would still indicate that I didn't configure VPN
So I clicked the "Gimme VPN" button in the SBS console
The beauty of SBS...
It did "stuff" but I still couldn't connect
@allquixotic Tell me about it :P
Let me check on of my client's servers... But I have to run in 5 minutes regardless
I never really messed with these policies. Couldn't I just create a new policy above all, granting access to anyone in the basic Users group? Just to see if that works
Should be able to. That's what I did when I ran Server 2003 at home
20:50
Just to rule out any possible issues in the other policies
I'll try that then
Well, at least @allquixotic knows about all this Windows Servery stuff.
I got SBS2012, but got 4 policies by default
I'll BBL, message me in about 6 or 7 hours when I'm home, and I'll help you further @OliverSalzburg
@allquixotic I have 5 policies overall
Cool. I'll probably not be around for the weekend, but I'll bug you ASAP when I'm back at any of my desks ;D
Go get drunk a nice cool lemonade, @OliverSalzburg!
@CanadianLuke Working on it!
I just ordered a @slhck shirt
I hope it'll turn out well
20:58
@OliverSalzburg A... a soulhack shirt? How does that work?
One of a kind!
@OliverSalzburg Hmmmm
@CanadianLuke I'm gonna take that as "I'm loving it and I would love to own one as well"
@OliverSalzburg OK :)
Me too!
@CanadianLuke me too! (source)
@allquixotic ^^
@OliverSalzburg Woah, I remember that one :P Cool!
Pacific Rim was not as bad as a film as I was led to believe it would be.
21:24
My cell capitalizes words auto magically
@allquixotic Did you recently get a diamond, or did I just never notice?
@allquixotic Oh, ok. :)
I forgot; @allquixotic uses SwiftKey on his Droid Maxx
That keyboard auto capitalizes by default
@Seth I gave him my diamond because he's clearly a better moderator than me
I spend/spent 50% of my mod time superpinging people whose posts I delete, apologizing profusely to them
I can't help it
Oh....
How'd they manage to change this without it showing in the revision history then?
Can someone help me with superuser.com/questions/751710/…
If you can help me with a bounty also that will be so great
@Seth I got an SE dev to help me with it
21:31
Seriously? Wow..
@AlPacino The question hasn't been around long enough for us to put a bounty on it.
You only asked it 4 hours ago.
@AlPacino Are you behind a proxy?
@AlPacino How long has the problem been happening? Is this the first time you've seen it?
If so, the proxy is probably refusing your HTTP requests because it doesn't like Windows Update's user agent (it could be doing user agent whitelisting, which is stupid, but a lot of proxies do it)
Oh, also, are you using a WSUS server? Looks like you're running Server 2008
You could of course run Wireshark and see what the actual requests/responses are (and where they're being directed to) to debug it further
@Seth flair updates automatically
Guys I am using Windows Server 2008 R2
21:36
Do DD-WRT and Tomato support NAS?
Its been a week I have problems like that now
@allquixotic Yeah I know, but changing the flair from one account to another requires a URL change.
@Seth Nothing a SQL UPDATE can't fix. :)
turns out Yes they do
@AlPacino You didn't answer any of my questions, so I can't help you further. Sorry!
21:43
@CanadianLuke Ain't nothing an SQL DROP TABLE can't fix.
@CanadianLuke so that site is you and @allquixotic ?
@barlop Just me so far, but @allquixotic seems to be willing to become an editor at some point
(Sorry for any confusion!)
No you aren't, @CanadianLuke
I'm not what?
Oh. Sorry? Yes I am! :(
21:54
perhaps an interesting topic, is to what extent as an IT enthusiast and Admin, you seek to generalise, and to specialise.. The pace of change is very great. And there are many OSs and areas.
@barlop I mainly specialise in Windows Servers and Desktops, since that's what we use at my school. @allquixotic specialises in just about everything.
yes i've noticed!
@CanadianLuke the term "school" is very american.. or canadian. In Britain "school" is where children go.
I'm my country, school is where the kids go to. I went to college
**The question hasn't been around long enough for us to put a bounty on it.**
Ok I will try until monday
@allquixotic I thought the college went to you ;-)
22:02
How long has the problem been happening?
this is a fresh install
I am running server 2008 R2
@CanadianLuke
@CanadianLuke as an admin, do you ever get tired of change and having to keep up with developments, or does it continue to inspire you? (is that a terrible question re your site?)
@barlop I think I'm somewhere in the middle. Change makes me learn new stuff, which is good, but the changes aren't always good changes.
This is Microsoft we're talking about, anyway. The Surface Pro? pssh.
@allquixotic has one and loves it, but he adapts to change better than the Borg
@CanadianLuke should I run Wireshark
What should I look for
@AlPacino Yes
Sorry to bother my server is down, so im frustrated
22:10
@AlPacino Just run it and look at the requests and responses when you check for updates, and see which server it's hitting and look for anything unusual... see if you can isolate the "403 Forbidden" responses from the windows update server and make sure it's either a real Windows Update server, or your local WSUS server.
You never said whether you're running under a proxy, either..
@CanadianLuke I have a firewall
is that what you are asking
my Boss said he didnt lock the ports for that ip
I am running wireshark now
How would your boss even know what IP is causing the issue?
I'm outta here guys
bye allquix
and the software firewall(windows) is disabled
22:13
@AlPacino if you disabled the firewall, then why are you saying you have a firewall.. it's as if you don't.
@barlop the ip of the server bro
@barlop sorry for confusion
there is the hardware firewall
@AlPacino Well obviously the IP of the server but do you know that all requests are to the same server?
anyhow wireshark will show more
By the way, you can't make a request to something that isn't a server. So obviously it's a request to a server.
I notice somebody commented about installing wireshark about half an hour ago
I guess you're in no rush!
@barlop yes I will run wireshark first then show the result
@AlPacino heh, not so simple
the result is absolutely massive
Did you add what you think is the server for updates to the trusted list in "IE"? (that was one of the solutions mentioned on googling you error message).
I notice you didn't bother to say in your question which solutions you tried. Just that you tried them all, which is unlikely to say the least.
@barlop I have tried so many, my question would look like community wiki
but you right I should be more detailed
I will edit
22:21
@AlPacino yeah if your question looked like a community wiki I wonder who it might benefit? (rhetorical q)
what is the site I need to add to the trusted list
I don't do windows updates much.. so can't say off hand.
https://*.microsoft.com
https://download.windowsupdate.com
https://update.microsoft.com/windowsupdate
http://*.update.microsoft.com
https://*.update.microsoft.com
http://download.windowsupdate.com
.
Those were mentioned on this page when I googled about adding windows update to trusted sites support.microsoft.com/KB/836961
adding windows updates to trusted sites was one of many solutions mentioned for your problem. You said you tried all of them. But you haven't. So yeah you should say what you tried.
@barlop You caught me XD
I actually read it tho
will try now
i'm not saying it's even remotely likely to work.. it's just one of the things mentioned.
it's not something that'll take ages though
so worth a try
ok iam adding them now
22:29
if you do wireshark youll get a ton - a ton- of packets.. there may be a display filter that shows just 403 or whatever the error is. Otherwise you should just look at packets that come up at the time of the error
so I should filter on this response code?
the goal is to find the packets where the comms is bad so obviously that's going to be a good idea to try isn't it.. and you can look manually too
I actually checked, all my trusted site were there
running wire now
you might have to look into display filter syntax
Yeah i know about the syntax to filter ip
22:42
I mean to filter for a code like 403
gtg but do keep us up to date with what you try, and issues.
23:28
I was indeed my boss fault
We swapped ip just to see and it worked
So firewall setup is to blame here
Wireshark helpes me solve this
How can i reward you @barlop
Thanks alot
