The only problem is that it's most definitely NOT the first heat sensitive case for apple devices.

I'm trying to argue someone out of hosting forms at home on Mac OS X Server
Clippy might actually be helpful here...
00:29
hosting forms?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek forums*
actually, if you don't have too many users, not a bad idea
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek There's so many problems with that setup.
Note: these are gaming forums. DDoS not out of the question.
Also, you have basically zero redundancy.
@Bob: you'd have the same issues with shared hosting.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Not really, no.
Any halfway-decent shared host has some DDoS protection.
And at least it wouldn't be killing your home connection (!!)
00:35
thats true
Bob
Bob
Most halfway-decent ones have some redundancy, too.
Power, network failures.
RAID.
(meh, I actually prefer to run stuff myself)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek There are some things that just shouldn't be run at home.
Any website you expect to have available at all times, for one.
But the main concern would be how well a home network would hold up to a DoS.
General answer: not well at all.

2 hours later…
02:18
@Bob: eh, I'm half pondering moving tt-rss back to the home server
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, if it's just something you use
but if you were hosting a service for unknowns?
@Bob: If someone asked very nicely, I might let them use my tt-rss instance ;p
@Bob: I've seen a whisk that looks exactly the same

@JourneymanGeek Except this was advertised for... a slightly different purpose...

@Bob Yeah, I don't want to build anything, I just want to buy something that is an open platform. For my Hope Automation system :)

What do I need to place phone calls from a PC over Ethernet? I have a SIP based telephony service provider and a ATA adapter sitting next to my router. Is that enough or do I need additional equipment?
12:01
@sammyg Nope, that should be it. You might want to allow 5060 and your RTP range inbound via portforwarding to accept incoming calls.
@Paul: hope automation system seems accurate ;p
wow, the Free Software Supporter (monthly FSF article) came out today and it contains zero april fools references
this year's april's fools jokes are pretty good ;p
not even a little "we have announced that all FSF systems will be migrating to Windows 8.1, and within the next month fsf.org will be hosted on Windows Server 2012"

I just remove the shitty tags from the new questions as well now. Instead of just pulling up old questions
Moto's April fools gag is classy
Also @oliver yeah, clearly processed meat product. I wouldn't feed a cat that
It's so annoying when you try to clean up tags and then you look at the New Questions tab and see "help repair important file" tagged
And then the next best idiot comes along, writes a question and sees there's a "OMG, this must be the tag to use when you need help!"

What the hell is with all these websites making popups / alerts / notifications that they use cookies?
AMD has one, and I just clicked away on one on youtube last night
Ah, thanks @Bob, that makes a bunch more sense.
The best part about the banners is that they usually say: "We use cookies, if you don't agree with that, leave the website" After they already placed cookies in your browser

@JourneymanGeek they could actually work it into 802.11n and 802.11ac by simply adding new frequencies to the firmware/microcode of wifi devices that says "btw you can use these frequencies" and use the exact same protocol and algorithms
they did something similar with LTE here -- we switched from the 1800-ish MHz band to the 700-ish MHz band on Verizon and the only difference is that everyone got an OTA which told your baseband processor that it's ok to use the new bands

I learned my lesson; no more beta drivers... they really suck
and no update on the stable since December
3.5 months and counting
> Took a road trip last week with two friends. We decided to surprise my brother who lives about a 21 hour drive away. It didn't take much to talk the rest of the gang to get a room for the night. Driving isn't so bad - it's all that sitting that gets to me! So we got lucky and found a spot that had a room for sixty bucks! Schaweet! We all toss in a twenty and retire for the evening.

A few minutes later one of the staff came to the door and said they made a mistake, the room was only $57. That was cool with us because now we only spent $19 apiece. That was a good enough price to justify go
WHAT.
Bob
Bob
19:45
@allquixotic ?
why are you adding 2 to 57?
should be subtracting 2 from 57
price of room - 55
+ 2 kept = 57
you paid 57, of which 2 went to the guy holding it
@allquixotic It's 57-2, not 57+2
Can't believe I read that :(
this is absolutely amusing superuser.com/questions/736306/…
will he still get my comment if the question ends up being deleted?
@Bob not me; it's a post from WHT
You forgot the punch line.
> Our first featured thread below shows you how to invest your money for the best return by investing in Gold.
So it's people who fail basic reading comprehension and math that invest in gold.
@DanielBeck it's not gold; it's WHT Gold Membership -- and anyway, I'm pretty sure it was an April Fools thing
19:54
@allquixotic I guess the joke's on me now? :-)
you guys are being pretty harsh and I'm not sure why -- I read it and was completely stumped about it even after I drew it all out on paper and still had no idea how it wasn't working out until you guys pointed it out
failing at math, sure... reading comprehension? no, I read it very carefully several times, and my brain wanted to agree with the way he was putting it
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I think the reason I had no trouble is I'm so tired I can't read it from start to finish - so I just skimmed over the numbers.
Actually, I'm more confused by the time scale.
Well, the repeated paragraph:
> A few minutes later one of the staff came to the door and said they made a mistake, the room was only $57. That was cool with us because now we only spent $19 apiece. That was a good enough price to justify going down to the bar and hammering out a few. After a few hours, we were surprised when the same person that refunded our $3 sat down with us and partied right along.
that was confusing
> Three times $19 equals $57. Plus the $2 the staff kept is $59. And $59 isn't $60!!!
that's the part that got me
when you take a perspective of trying to take account of where things are, you get $60, but then you can't reconcile it with that
guys come in with $60. $55 in cash register. $5 goes with staff dude. staff dude gives $3 to roomies, keeps $2 himself. 60 - $55 - $3 - $2 = 0, so all accounted for
that I got the first time. but I couldn't understand the mistake with the 19*3 + 2
Half the story talks about the 3 dollars returned to the guys because of the error so it's only 57 total, and then suddenly it's: "Three times $19 equals $57. Plus the $2 the staff kept is $59". When from the reference $57 the $2 wasn't returned, but kept. So, other direction.
this was from the WebHostingTalk newsletter, and it was sent squarely in the middle of April Fools (in US time), so I'm quite sure the guy isn't writing a letter about how he's confused about where that $1 went -- it's gotta be a little brain teaser, that's all
maybe your vocabulary or counting terms over there are different enough that you immediately caught it, but I swallowed the trick hook, line and sinker, and it stumped me good
another way to look at it is: the roomies had a $57 outlay; $55 of that went into the cashier and $2 into the staff's pocket. when I think of it in those terms, the need to subtract the $2 becomes much more obvious to my mind

wafflesI added a link in my post to an IP Address based link such as 127.0.0.1/my_awesome_image.png. It appears that an automatic process added a comment on the post asking me to correct the link. I know how the Internet works and think it is perfectly valid to have IP address based links. Why are you...

20:18
See this MSO post for some more information on this decision. You're welcome to raise the issue of allowing image links like this, but since there's an easy and better way, I doubt any action will be taken. — Bob 18 mins ago
> I doubt any action will be taken
that's true of anything involving SE devs :P

Journeyman GeekThis is a fishy question from 2013 about a vaio that suddenly had fish in it This is a link to screenshot of the original thread https://i.sstatic.net/eyqW6.jpg. Answers range from the fish removal kit To installing linux and using a turtle or a logo turtle to eat the fish.
