wut
yup
took me a moment to work out why everything was monochrome.
@JourneymanGeek good morning
@evamvid o/
You are on GitHub?
@Bob: ^^ notice the favicons are monochrome too
01:23
@JourneymanGeek who you pidgining with? :P (you don't have to tell me, I'm just joking)
foobar2000 and xchat user!

notepad, paint.net, task manager, command prompt... typical geek :D
fair's fair :P
01:38
@allquixotic: pidgin is connected to my own jabber server which I'm currently troubleshooting
for some reason I can't get it to connect with ssl
also, its hexchat
01:55
hm, super nervious
friend of my dad's told me to call a guy about a job. I have zero information about what they do ;p
They probably do 'computers' at some level, and I'll have a good word in but meh, this is essentially a faux phone interview with no information at all
@JourneymanGeek Selling knives.
lol
ooh
google!
heh, found out what the company is
02:43
@JourneymanGeek ...and?
electronics repair stuff
sending a resume, lets see how it goes, looks almost like real engineering
@JourneymanGeek well luckey you as they dont repair stuff anymore, they just replace whole boards, and the pay is the same :-)
@Psycogeek That depends.
If he gets a job in industrial robotics, then even better.
Electronics repair doesn't sound like Industrial Robotics at all.
02:57
guy told me to get the email addie off his site, only one they seem to have is their sales one
It'll probably be break/fix stuff, which is still fun if you're into that.
The mystery, there must be a clue in what they do?
Take this pallet of phones we got in, fix em and sell them on e-bay
allprimeproducts.com/electronicspallets.php Ever wonder where that suff goes. Amazons Lemon trucks superbodegadepacas.com/Shop/… If it didnt work the first time, try try again.
these seem to be things like diagnostic gear and stuff
anyway, emauled him and we'll see
03:12
emauled? D:
Is that what a Cyber Bear does?
@Psycogeek LOL
that's from the first link. @Bob would love that. returned Beats headphones. in the junk pile, where they belong.
a goldmine. Just go to vegas, and tell people "well they fell out of a truck, so were making you a special deal today"
(the unsuspecting buyer thinks that your a criminal and have very valuable stolen merchandise)
oops, i guess that is the suspecting buyer, oh well.
I need help fixing this computer :-)
03:35
Does anything look wrong with this picture? (They're looking for the missing flight MH370)
... not that one.
this one ^
the hearing protection/headphones?
I was thinking more like... They're above the clouds.
Well it was a Jet liner :-)
Are you suggesting MH370 is still airborne?
he's looking down ;p
don't forget, those planes are meant to spot subs
03:44
@MichaelFrank I was thinking it was more waterborne.
If all the camera can see out the windows is clouds, what do you expect the guy sitting next to the camera can see? Bigger clouds because he's using binocs?
He probably only sees the AP photo guy , doing pictures for a news photo, which often are very good representations of the actual news. (back when journalists existed)
04:06
The Iwood basic computer, it's a Pear.
Complete with built in touch stylus
Erasable graphics memory

06:58
I need a text editor not a os :p
@JourneymanGeek Notepad.exe! :D
Notepad spazzes on Unix line endings
Meh they misspelled my name on my id and I am stuck waiting for m y queue number
And its not moving
07:42
And two more to go
Tinfoil hat suggestion?
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Oh that thing.
@JourneymanGeek from the sound of all the conspiracy stuff, we can assume that he does not mean, that his little brother turns on the microwave to destroy his WiFi :-)

@JourneymanGeek ..."my computer isn't working, it must be someone else's fault!"
I'm tempted to say "lost cause, close it and move on"

Hi guys..can anyone help me with clearing a doubt about merge functionality of wireshark?
08:57
@JishnuUNair Merging what?
09:19
Guys! Can you please recommend an alternative to Mapedit by Boutell?
I already tried searching on alternativeto.net but it is not listed.
This is a "WYSIWYG editor for WWW imagemaps".
more specific details, and that might be a possible sr.se question.
Developer website: boutell.com/mapedit
I'd also look at open street map editors
I don't think software recommendations are legitimate questions for Superuser.
@JourneymanGeek Is that www.openstreetmap.org?
I will look at that.
yup - its a set of maps
Bob
Bob
09:23
@JourneymanGeek Completely different thing.
He's talking about HTML imagemaps.
In HTML and XHTML, an image map is a list of coordinates relating to a specific image, created in order to hyperlink areas of the image to different destinations (as opposed to a normal image link, in which the entire area of the image links to a single destination). For example, a map of the world may have each country hyperlinked to further information about that country. The intention of an image map is to provide an easy way of linking various parts of an image without dividing the image into separate image files. Server-side image map Server-side image maps were first supported in M...
@sammyg You can just search "html imagemap" for some others
Heck, the wiki article has some.
Bob
Bob
:P
@JourneymanGeek Here's an example:
(you're going to have to click through)
OK
Looks like GIMP has a plugin for this?
Is Dreamweaver an overkill for this?

Q: What is the best tool to create an image map?

leoraI have a large image and I want to make certain sections of the image clickable. I also want to specify the shape of the clickable area (square, circle, custom). Is there some a recommended designer tool where you can point to an image and highlight areas and it will spit out the correct image...

I have access to Dreamweaver CC on one of the computers. But I would prefer to use a small, simple tool, preferably free (or open source). It should work with Windows.
Anything that comes to mind?...
There are tons of different programs and tools for this out there. However it needs to be installable and run locally and work with local files. So no online editors please.

Q: in minecraft how do i place blocks without breaking existing ones?

FTFTFTI'm on single player creative mode. When i try and place down a block all it does is break existing blocks. So how do i place down a block without doing this?

10:21
@MichaelFrank Nice :D
10:33
I am in serious need of switching out of virtual Dub for another converter made in this century . But what converter would do everything I have been doing?
To make my videos work well outdoors in the portable device, i have had an Array of adjustements being done to them. Levels - Raise the brightness without destroying the picture, so it uses Less backlight indoors, and so it can be seen outdoors in the sun. Saturation - which increases the Color contrast, making it much easier to see when out doors . Temporal filter - To filter all the Grain noises and other artifacts, because that stuff wastes data prior to compressing.
Sharpen - it lots without destrying it or adding noise or grain. Resize - to exactally 1/4 the resolution of the device. Encode- To Xvid (or divx) so it will play on every piece of junk made from 2000 and on.
@Paul merging pcap files.
. . . and Raise the volume back up to use the full range of the digital audio, or the portable speakers are not loud enough. Encode that to Mp3 128 CBR , so (again) it will play on every portable device made .
11:16
@JishnuUNair Ok?
11:57
@OliverSalzburg nice visualizations, too bad I actually have to type something :P
12:23
@IvoFlipse It needs an undo. I still don't understand rebasing :P
Well, I guess I do understand it, I just don't know when to rebase instead of merging
12:43
@OliverSalzburg Guess the order matters
""I can't believe they ask for money for this appalling software. I found it to be riddled with bugs crashing numerous times for assorted reasons a total waste of time. If they had released this as freeware beta I would make some effort to help them solve the problems. ""
"If you noobs cant mess around instead of wining and complaining then go program yourself your own "
""I find it interesting that despite 172 views (at time of this post) NOBODY has add a comment in support of this program "wonder why that is?"""
Ok looks like i found a winner, all i need to do is become a programmer , and DIY.
13:05
wtf new firefox beta update sucks
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell I take it you don't like Australis? :P
@allquixotic seems to like it
I'd rather not.
@Bob Ah it's Australis, forgot the name. Nope I don't like it :P
And finally the play favicon(youtubr) in firefox doesn't look like a dick
Bob
Bob
O.O
@HackToHell I have no idea what you're talking about.
Wait, I think I have a screeny
Can't find it :P

This is a terrible unhelpful semi-answer full of ignorant BS. I can't believe it got any up votes. — Spiff 8 hours ago
someone's got a bug up their ass
Mr. "802.11 nerd" thinks he knows it all so anyone who doesn't provide a one-and-done answer is "terrible unhelpful"... OK genius, let's have you divine what's wrong!
Bob
Bob
13:52
@allquixotic :\
actually, most of that guy's answers are about wifi anyway; I'm amazed he didn't VTC as duplicate for that question. I can't imagine that the same thing hasn't been asked 100+ times on SU
@allquixotic: If I disagree with an answer, I'd just post a better answer, not bitch about the answers that are there
that should probably end up being the ultimate fate for that Q, honestly.. 4+ years and no questions about wifi throughput tanking intermittently? !!no
@allquixotic: a slightly more complete answer might talk about using tools to work out things like signal strength. Picking the right channel does wonders
Bob
Bob
Incidentally, I've completely given up on Win8's wifi panel. It's useless.
netsh for me, thanks.
13:55
spiff got a little too focused on the user's attempt at self-diagnosis and lost sight of the actual question. the actual question was "one of my boxes is getting a lot less throughput on the wifi than other boxes"
traceroute is hardly revealing there, especially to google.com, unless the video you're watching is also from google.com
Bob
Bob
Eh. Easy test would be to simply ping the AP/local router.
good point
@allquixotic after reading it a few times, the first thing i wondered about was, One of the boxes has a suckey antenna
i immediately suspected PHY layer problems because one of the first thing he says is "I moved this computer"
@allquixotic: it might also be the design of the building
like the wierd wifi problems I have ;p
13:58
before -> after state change causes problem. state change = physically relocating computer using wifi. big surprise; now it doesn't work so well. gee, what could it be? oh, maybe Google is taking us to a longer route through the network now?!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Well, external changes coinciding with local ones shouldn't be immediately discounted.
Just pushed down the queue of things to check.
I should just VTC those types of questions instead of even attempting to help the person
bleh, my stupid phone's display switches on randomly :/
@jokerdino You alive ?
14:16
@HackToHell which phone? is it a motorola?

Q: screen of lenovo thinkpad blows up when connecting to projector

user310110I am very computer illiterate but i am trying to find an answer for a problem. Can you please help me in the simplest of terms? I have a lenovo laptop T61 thinkpad with windows. I am a teacher and use whiteboard with a projector in class. When I connect my projector, Epson, to the laptop, the pic...

this is not as bad as it looks
@allquixotic: naw, he's not one of us (tm) yet ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek :(
Then again, I can't exactly get a good Motorola phone in-store here anyway.
Only the Moto G, which is... a little lacking.
@Bob: hm
My moto G's a perfectly good phone ;p
lol
> a little lacking
@JourneymanGeek loves his G
we have a disconnect here :P
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I need 5GHz wifi.
14:20
@allquixotic: It even has a name!
Bob
Bob
Uni wifi on 2.4 is completely saturated (read: non-functional)
@JourneymanGeek what is its name? papadom?
Yeah, there's that
@allquixotic: Blue
(They didn't have black cases, so I have the blue flippy case ;p)
ahh
its name is Blue?

Why, yes, you did!

you're an odd fellow
:)
I mean, I suppose I could call it grey ;p
hmm. Celeron 1007U, or AMD A4-1250? don't ask why :D
(for performance, not battery life)
I'd go with the AMD
more flexible, you do have the better GPU
good point
celery has significantly better single thread perf though
14:28
Yeah, but you're rarely going to peg out a modern processor
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek First question: what are you going to do with it?
@Bob the usage of the machine in question is going to involve web browsing and running web apps, pretty much
no gaming, but definitely, like, MS Office, uh, 2D accel web browsers (you know, Firefox, Chrome, or whatever), etc
gonna be hitting Direct2D a lot, for sure
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Sure the GPU is better? It's a Radeon HD 8210, apparently.
@Bob: Intel GPUs have generally tended to suck IMO
@HackToHell yeah
Bob
Bob
14:38
@JourneymanGeek The Celeron uses an Intel HD 2500 (AFAICT). Which isn't too bad.
I'm not sure how it compares, though.
> Depending on the benchmark, the performance of the Radeon HD 8210 is similar to the Intel HD Graphics (Ivy Bridge). This is on par with a dedicated Radeon HD 6430M, but is still too slow for modern games as of 2013. However, a few older and less demanding games will run fluently, if the limited CPU performance is sufficient.
If the AMD DIDN'T have a better GPU... the choice would be clear ;p
Bob
Bob
So, very similar.
@JourneymanGeek What's saying it has a better GPU? See above.
Then the Intel ;p
Bob
Bob
Though, keep in mind that the AMD has a TDP of 8 W and the Intel is 17 W.
That's max TDP, though.
Probably won't hit that in normal use.
the funny thing is, the 11.6" laptop containing the A4 is $20 more expensive... lol
Bob
Bob
14:40
I know @allquixotic wants to ignore battery, but either should be performant enough for basic use...
$20 more for 2.5x slower PassMark scores and about the same GPU perf... nice
Bob
Bob
I'd go the Intel, personally. I have an Ivy with HD 2500, and it's more than sufficient - so the extra CPU power would be more beneficial. But that's me.
The only thing is - not sure if that site means the HD 2500 or 4000. Both are IVB Intel HD.
@Bob you think HD 2500 is more than sufficient for web browsing, even heavy Web 2.0 sites? (no WebGL, just a lot of stuff going on)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Ya.
Might suffer a bit more strain when watching high-res videos, though.
video watching isn't high on the user's priority list
14:42
is this a mombox?
Bob
Bob
Actually, no. I don't have a 2500. I have a 2000 and 4000 -_-
Still, the 2000 (on SDB) has no trouble.
the HD2500 is the cut-down IVB, right?
Bob
Bob
Your basic web browsing isn't all that intensive.
@allquixotic Yea.
IVB graphics are probably good enough, and surely would beat down that lolslow Radeon
still, that Radeon is GCN. hmm
Bob
Bob
14:44
@allquixotic Keep in mind that the Celeron GPU is clocked pretty low.
meh, you can browse the web on a decent core2 ;p
Bob
Bob
Wait, no, that's standard clock for their iGPUs. Never mind.
the Pentium 2127U is a significant step up from that Celeron O_O
pricier though (of course)
Bob
Bob
The Radeon is 128:8:4 Unified shaders : Texture mapping units : Render output units
yeah, that's not a bad number of shaders at all. that HD2500 is going to have many fewer EUs
Bob
Bob
14:48
Wait. Waiiiit.
> Celeron and Pentium have Intel HD, while Core i3 and above have either HD 2500 or HD 4000.
Ok. Where the hell did it say the Celeron was 2500, then?
"Intel HD" isn't even HD2500? XD
I guess they're hiding the model number because they don't want people googling it and figuring out how weak it is XD
Bob
Bob
So, yea, AMD has better GPU. Probably.
at least we can find details on the radeon XD
Bob
Bob
Misread the graph. Nevermind :P
...
@allquixotic Somehow, "Mobile Intel HD" still scores higher than the 8210 in some benchmarks
though, uncertain what exactly "Mobile Intel HD" is
Meh. So, yea, the AMD probably has a better GPU.
At a guess, the Intel GPU is more than sufficient too.
AMD has lower max TDP, and Intel will likely struggle less with heavy JS.
14:57
I hate when they don't give you a part number!
@Bob it would be super depressing if that A4 has lower benchmark performance than my Snapdragon S4 Pro in my phone LOL
laptop ULV x86-64 loses to smartphone.... that'd be the day
Bob
Bob
Consider that the A4-5000 is likely considerably better than the A4-1250.
that's an awesome article :D
Bob
Bob
I think your phone CPU is better, @allquixotic!
14:59
@Bob that's depressing :D
