Q: GRUB doesn't show up when second hard drive is present

Martin MelkaI just finished messing with Windows 7 + Linux Mint dualboot and finally got it to work. Grub handles the booting. It works as expected as long as I have only my main hard drive connected. When I connect my second drive and start the laptop, the intro screen appears and then, instead of grub, o...

Q: view the list of ssh connection and view that specific connection using screen

anoldgangstahI have this friend who is connected in ssh, and I would like to view his screen to see his progress in our project and what are the things his doings. Its like spying on him. I would like to know how to do this. Currently I can only view screen that is created by screen command but how about tho...

02:55
@Psycogeek I've used someone elses high quality voices before. They don't break your phone
not a massive improvement though
03:40
@JourneymanGeek ok, here goes.
04:08
Well the hQ voice works ok. It is less loud than the tiny one. It has more highs, so it is a bit hissy on the tiny speaker. She sounds much better, but trips over the same words that the tiny one does. Because of the low volume and the high pitch the voice is more sexy. Thats cool, but without loud it wont work as well in the car our speaking out of the pocket.
I wish they had a medium one, a nice blend between the 2. the 50-70Meg size is what many of the other TTS things have chosen for thier HQ voice stuff.
It took an long time to initiate the first words , but thereafter it does not seem to be acting different from the tiny one. Not sure about memory use, i can see free memory, but with caches and all, i know nothing about memory.
I would far rather have it reading me a book, but I do not have anything reading books.
I tried that, sounds horrible.
I'm using google play books for that
None of these things are very good at reading tech stuff, drop in an IP address and i just want to tell it to STFU :-)
Pick up on one of them horrible URLs out of the clipboard and it needs a filter.
@JourneymanGeek and the google play books are pre-recorded book readings?
Anonymous
@JourneymanGeek i think I may not make that setup after all
ebooks through TTS

I've been reviewing the current "average" visualisators and I conclude that all of them are unsufferable pieces of unstable shit
@HackToHell Its not disturbing if you use total intelectual capacity :-) just put the "street Smarts" graph in overlay .

@Psycogeek nobody needs street smartness when you've got google campus shuttles and self driving cars
@Psycogeek True, those kids are probably good at something else, but still since your college depends on those grades, the better schools are going to be filled with the rich
@JourneymanGeek What is going on that the book is read better with that TTS? Does it have the phonic text in the file to read it all proper?

I cannot stand just listening to something that is not interactive nor live nor at least carried on by more than one person
Even Some employers recognise a bigger diversity of knowlege, and do not take "scores" as the be all and do all of a usefull employee. But that problably comes from dealing with rich arrogant assholes who wont really do work :-)

@Psycogeek I've always said IQ tests and such are for measuring how good a subject is at doing IQ tests, not measuring actual IQ
Anonymous
Tests largely reward memorisation, not comprehension
No test apart from the test of time really measures the intelligence and survivability of a person.
Anonymous
@HackToHell the market!
And luck matters too.
Anonymous
The market is the best test
04:31
@PatoSáinz link ?
Anonymous
@HackToHell link to what?
Uhm, is the market test some kind of standardized test or does it mean the survivability of a product(person) when introduced into the market(world)?
But thats Ok, because harvard and yale graduates , didnt intend to work to begin with. they will just manage those that can do things.
Anonymous
@HackToHell the latter
@PatoSáinz oh i get it. I am going to have to go back to reading Peanuts comics if i have to keep looking on the web for WTF they are talking about.

lol
Being around teachers, they are often saying that the "testing" is not very useful, about 5 minutes later one of the students isnt doing well, or disrupting class, and. . . they send them off for testing (the other kind).
Anonymous
@Psycogeek i so fucking hate almost everything in the current system and i can name an interminable list of shit is wrong with it, but we cannot do anything
The politics creates the hurdles to improve the economy and perception of the schools, the teachers jump the hurdles, the kids, well who is really in charge of what goes into their heads , them. And the testing and graphing orginisations just want to charge $300 for a book (so to speak).
In school i would have rather been a journeyman at a work, applying and learning at the same time. Much more of it all Stuck, when there was a reason for it, an application of it.
But noo child labor laws, how terrible for the kids to have to like move , breathe , think , feel. it so slows the nuron switching processes , if they are not strapped to a chair memorising 200 year old history.

@Psycogeek I think a much more feasiable solution is to increase teacher wages and to go back to the old days of one-to-one master-apprentice greek (and also german) thing
@Psycogeek you have a non audiobook book and you want to listen to it while dricing or something like that?
@JourneymanGeek I do not really read actual books very often. Manuels pdfs, pages of manuel on web . The use of TTS right now in the phone is to tell everything that is going on. What is connected, what is on and off, and to read messages , also applied for car-gps (seperate tts) . None of the fluff, just the raw data :-)
The simple stuff, like after a boot, the phone saying Hello Master , great and wise, what can i do for you today :-)
(not really) it just tells the time, and what is switched, and if the wi-fi etc.
Doing the sripting stuff to both get the phone to automate things, and as a sub , to get everything done with less programs. EX: if tasker can do everything, why have 10 more programs. In doing that , being lame at programming, I have talking Debuging.
-Instead of seeing it scroll through the commands, and having a gui interface showing what is going on, i just put Speech into the scripting, to tell what is going on behind the scenes.

05:11
@Psycogeek lol nothing can replace my good ol' print statement debugging
@PatoSáinz Yea, like that, why REMs when echos work :-)
It is also because my main PC does all that too. it is normally quiet, but tells me everything i need to know. So i can look at all the guages everywhere. The guages i set up then never look at.
PC as a co-worker. like any co-worker they would speak "hey doomass, didn't you see that" and point. Because nobody wants to be looking over my shoulder 24-7 , the PC will need to do that itself.
-"You've got mail" yea so what, is my disk full? is my connection failed? Is that long time task still running? What power mode am i in? why is my GPU slow? E-mail, heck tell me something useful.
05:56
The GPU guage (sidebar) has a Klaxxon Alarm that goes off if the Gpu temps get to over 80*C . In the middle of a movie it goes off, and sounds like any other Klaxxon going off in an adventure or sci-Fi flick. It takes me a while to realise even what it is, or what alarm it is. If it would just Say "your gpu is hot", even if it also Beeps.
Then i can change the temp it triggers at, or raise a fan, or wonder what is going on with the dust or other fans or something. I may never hear that in another year. If it doesnt say what is wrong, it could be anything.

@HackToHell Moto G?
@allquixotic naw Generic mt6589 phone
And i have 500 mb of free ram :O
I have never seen my phone have that much free ram :P
Is this something that doesn't have a quick answer? I want to remove items that appear on msconfig's run on start-up list then make the list read-only.
18:16
@HackToHell I don't doubt that your phone is snappy, but specs aren't very impressive compared to mine :P techivian.com/…
@0xFFF1 "make the list read-only"? it's not a list; it's stored in the registry. it is completely impossible to make that registry key so that it can't be written to by someone with full Administrator access, which includes any program that's elevated by UAC.
@allquixotic It's 200$ godamnit
@allquixotic What phone btw
if you're trying to prevent programs from adding stuff to msconfig, well, tough -- you'll just have to repeatedly remove stuff from it, or write a program that goes through the relevant registry key unticking things as they come up, and run it as a scheduled task or something
@HackToHell Droid Maxx (if something you're reading about it says "RAZR" anywhere in the title or the article, that's the wrong phone)
if you're looking for the raw chipset, it's the Qualcomm MSM8960DT
I don't think Qualcomm is selling it to the open market though, it was pretty much a special order for Motorola
you'd have to go to Shenzhen to have a chance of finding it
@allquixotic bleh, US specific phone :P
is there a way to make an admin account with full perms, then make an admin access level identical except it can't write to that key in the registry? (any attempt will auto fail with no on-screen notification) Then whenever I need to edit that key (after setup of the rule: never) I can log into that account, and otherwise I use the account with slightly less permissions.
@HackToHell best-specific*
@0xFFF1 you cannot take away permissions from an Administrator; at least, not permanently -- the initial key write may fail, but a smart program can simply take ownership of the key and give itself back the permissions with its admin rights
registry key permissions are set up basically identically to how filesystem permissions work... try it on a folder.. make a folder, deny yourself all permissions, and you'll still be able to get back into it no matter what
18:28
I can really imaging this call:

Plumbing service: Me: Thank you for calling [plumbing company]. How can I help you?

Customer: Do you make house calls?

Me: Well, we used to have our customers bring their clogged drains to our office, but that got messy, so we decided to start sending our plumbers to them.
even if you login to Windows as a non-administrator user, you'll still have to elevate to an Administrator user in order to install most software
any user that's going to have enough permissions to correctly install the software without error, is going to be able to give themselves permission back to a key that has been temporarily denied to them
unless you only install software by self-extractors and/or zip/7z files, and refuse to run any MSI installers or installshield .exes etc
I'm the only user of this computer, and I'm probably not dealing with "smart" programs
@allquixotic :P
@0xFFF1 well, then try it -- my guess is that you will receive a terminal error message from the installer program when it can't write to the key, and it won't let you bypass it, and if you hit cancel, it'll rollback the entire installation and refuse to install
it's not that hard to JFDI (just fucking do it) and see if it works; I'm betting it will not, but you're free to try
there's this program NCSoft adds to startup whenever i go to play Aion, I want that program to stop it. but i guess I can just uninstall and not play aion, not that attached
18:32
@allquixotic The Moto G is as fast as your device :P
i mean ffs
go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run (and replace HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE with HKEY_CURRENT_USER also and do the same thing), in regedit; right-click on the key, Permissions, and deny Administrators permission
It has less RAM though
@HackToHell no, the Moto G has a Snapdragon 200 with an Adreno 305... the GPU is slower, and the CPU, while a newer generation, has a lower system clock and lower TDP
only the Verizon Droids (Ultra/Maxx/Mini) have the MSM8960DT
ffs ncsoft, goodbye forever
18:34
and the G in Moto G stands for Gheap, like the "C" in iSuck 5c stands for Cheap
uninstall
@0xFFF1 ...I did just give you a method for trying to prevent it, which is what you came here for... but whatever
sounds like you solved your own problem by uninstalling the offending program
pretty much
thanks anyways
Cheap things don't necessarily have to suck :P

@JourneymanGeek Good day! Here's the problem I am having with bvckup: heypasteit.com/clip/17T6
We will be performing a kernel update on your server. We estimate the outage to be approximately 15-30 minutes. During this time, your email, website and account will not be accessible. This updated kernel brings a number of significant enhancements in all aspects of the kernel, the integral part of which the rest of the Operating System relies upon
As client relying on shared hosting company, this is what I am supposed to hear from them? Why they won't give temporary backup while they perform update?
Because that requires advanced planning.
Also, it helps if they are able to count to two.
