Q: Within a wi-fi network, are all computers directly connected?

James SydowI tracerouted some computers on my home network and all were only 1 hop away. I sort of expected 2 hops because I thought maybe packets need to go through the router or gateway. Surely this can't always be the case, right? There's nothing to guarantee that two arbitrary computers using the same ...

Network Layers are confusing ;p
^ wish somone would answer that in english :-) I am using more wireless than before but all the techobabble didnt help splain it.
the question really did answer one question i had, 2 devices on the same IP group and router addressing thing , Can communicate to eachother direct. Just like wire.
Then if i add in , the part I let mentally slip "all wi-fi devices are 2-WAY" , they are not just recievers. it is logical again that it it is just like wire.
Then the last part, when networking between 2 WiFi connected devices and it is like:
Phone------------------------------Router-----------------------------Tablet
and the phone and tablet are too far away from eachother, but easily connect to same router, then what happens?

Anyone can recommend earphones with playback control on Amazon?
@Bob A Dead Island constructor weapon. (zombie killing video game) one big wrench 2 rags, wire , and lighter fluid.
@Boris_yo I can see ratings for single apps. I was hoping you had a search method that added ratings to the sort or something? Or any tricks for searching in the google apps store (on phone too) that can trim down some of the waste.
@Psycogeek What sort?
05:28
@Boris_yo Well sort by "programs that charge you for ingame purchases making them $60 to play" for 2 days? Sort by "really popular for 5 year olds parents" , to sort by "the least number of Bug reports"?
@Psycogeek You want to search for minimum ratings, reviews you can do that. I am logged out and I think you can't see ratings, reviews until you log in.
@Psycogeek That's some advanced sorting... Only on search results and not that kind of sorting.
There are just too many Things in there , and (like you said before) to many people praising stuff that is either buggy junk , or a money ripoff.
Some way to find the Diamonds, which truely exist, in the coal.
I already have most of my needed programs selected. Weird one, i just paid for "speakerphoneEx" because the free (itself) works good for speakerphone change. But the Paid version wants to licence verify once every day. Arrrrgggg. So before i realise it, it has disabled itself, and i screw up answering the phone again.
Had to go back to the free version. grumbling all the way. glad to support the developer, dang ticked that the developer made the paid version useless for ME.
3-4 times now , the paid versions have had like zero value over the free version. Like the added features in the paid are just beta stuff that is really untested. or features that not many people would really want. or the paid version simply crashes :-) So i am donating, and happy to donate to good developers, but really getting nothing out of it.
05:58
@Psycogeek Fake reviews?
@Psycogeek What it does?
The AutoAnswer app that i am now using for the Car, it sets to just blindly answer the phone (no reject) anytime the phone is A) landscape B) not in pocket (proximity) C) plugged to power. The one called AppRite play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=se.presector.apprite totally free, and so far simple and better than many car docks. Rating on it is terrible.
@Boris_yo Change speaker on phone as you pull away from ear. Auto answer as you pull out of pocket and put to ear. Proximity, also could be used for "wave answer" when laying up on the desk.
@Psycogeek Why rating is terrible for a good app?
@Psycogeek What call recording app you use?
@Boris_yo I assume it does not work right for 2.3 and down? But i am getting "better" results from "new" programs because they are more often made for 4.0+ So this is a "Low Maturity" program.
@Boris_yo I do not record calls. I am Using "RecForge" for stereo recordings , from the 2 mics.
@Psycogeek Does that help you when driving?
@Psycogeek Your smartphone has 2 mics?
@Boris_yo Well i do not drive a lot, i walk more. But I Set up the (non tech) landlord with the same thing. I tried many apps, and watched him run off the road (just joking) when trying to answer. Finnaly ended up with blind answer.
@Boris_yo Yes, many do for the "noise cancelation" where one mic listens to you and the other one cancels the environment (noises around you). Then this also applies the 2 for "zoom mic" (another cancelling process using comparitor) and for stereo videos.
06:10
@Psycogeek 1st mic is focused for close proximity and second is far proximity?
So they spot the difference and cancel it out?
@Boris_yo They are just on both ends of the phone.
One closer to where a person would be talking.
@Psycogeek What's the difference between refurbishing and fitting something? Bathroom fitting and refurbishment for example.
@Boris_yo Yea, it is more simple than it sounds. A simple cheap "shotgun" mic has a built in comparitor to make a mic cancel out anything that hits both mics at the same time. So the tech itself is old and can be done in very small and very little extra power.
Reverse the phase on an analog or even digital audio chunk , and it cancels out . The way they do audio it goes like +1 to -1 for a Sound pressure change. (speaker moving Foreward , speaker moving back). Positive & negative. So adding +1 to -1 = 0
@Boris_yo Refurbishing is to rebuilt it entirely. Fix up all the worn or broken, make it somewhat like new. . The use of the word "Refurbished" in selling stuff varies a lot "re-tested" to "still-broken" "lemon that works somewhat" "just re-boxed for sale" Could mean anything when you see stuff selling as a refurb.
@Boris_yo: refurbish = take crappy old thing, fix. Fitting means putting things in place.

@JourneymanGeek And how refurbishing differs from renovating?
You refurbish a specific component, you renovate an apartment.
Latin renovâre, renovât- : re-, re- + novâre, to make new (from novus, new).]
@JourneymanGeek You can't refurbish propery, building, house?
sure you can
you USUALLY renovate an apartment though

the common usage of the terms. so used to be hearing it that way, that it would sounds wrong to use it a different way.

@Boris_yo refurbishing in that context usually means more redecorating, replacing furniture, etc
but you'll find a lot of words in the english language can be interchangeable, and context-dependent

@TomWijsman Hello
10:08
@Boris_yo Where in the wiki does it say it was a name? translates as "wind-water" in English , dang and here i thought it was more like symmetry. like why there are 2 gargoyles at equidistant locations in front of a building. Why both french doors are the same size, and why a pontoon boat has 2 equal sized floats.
Because anyone OCD would feak out and say "one of these things just ain't like the other, can you guess just which one" (sesame street training).
Gotta love it when they say "it was aliens who aligned the Pyramids", or any other historically old monument items to some star, or the moon. When all it ever indicated to me is, they didnt have GPS , and (revelation) they went outside, even at night. " before the invention of the magnetic compass" it took that long eh.
@Psycogeek But aliens already had GPS. That's how they triangulated alignment of pyramids.
To lure humans into pyramids where they would use them as incubators.

Q: How to setup K9 Mail properly for free email services offering multiple aliases for same email box?

Boris_yoTried Googling for a lot of results but did not find any that can show how to setup email accounts that offer using multiple email aliases to users on same email. I am talking mainly about Outlook.com and ability to send from my email account there using different aliases like [email protected] ...

@Boris_yo Trying to trap the 3 wise men as they followed the "brightest star" :-)
@Boris_yo that does not sound like "aliases" but more like seperate "accounts" . Seperate accounts to same inbox, is just "combined inbox" which many things support, although (for me) that only confuses where they were headed.
10:42
@Boris_yo did you ever consider that perhaps K9 doesn't support the feature you want?
RoboDremmel engadget.com/gallery/inventables-easel/2476214/#!slide=2476216 The anti 3d printer, to remove instead of place.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek "anti 3d printer", also known as cnc milling
Milling is the machining process of using rotary cutters to remove material from a workpiece advancing (or feeding) in a direction at an angle with the axis of the tool. It covers a wide variety of different operations and machines, on scales from small individual parts to large, heavy-duty gang milling operations. It is one of the most commonly used processes in industry and machine shops today for machining parts to precise sizes and shapes. Process Milling is a cutting process that uses a milling cutter to remove material from the surface of a workpiece. The milling cutter is a rot...
11:04
I can afford a dremmel and 2 servo motors :-)
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek but not as accurate :P
though, having worked with CNC milling in the past... it's not the accuracy of the machine that matters most (past about 1mm, ours went down to 0.05mm)... it's the accuracy of the program (grumble grumble)
Because many of the 3d printers have slop all about because the resolution (and general properties of hot plastic) is low. A combo might just do all the work. 3D print mess, with a Dremmel cleanup
@Bob So did you do a lot of manual operation of the machine? to finish, or just regularly?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek mhmm, precision parts are almost always machined
your typical plastic moulding and metal casting tends to be somewhat imprecise, especially after temperature changes (e.g. cooling)
@Psycogeek well, we were machining one-off jobs, so we had to sit and stare and make sure it didn't cut itself
some of the people who drew their projects were... careless
one guy hadn't heard of "snap to grid"
@Bob ohh
Bob
Bob
we couldn't even get the CAD drawing converted to a CAM program...
others got tolerances wrong
there was a lot of hitting the red button when it started cutting into the metal jig (the cutting bit was for balsa wood... it doesn't like cutting metal)
11:14
I see the computer interface at the machine shop i rarely go to, and the expert is doing manuel. I wasn't Even going to say "would that there computer do it" :-) I dont think i had the kind of money to spend.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek mostly, it was just put the wood in and let it go, if you have a good program
e.g. if we were redoing a known good one
afterwoods, there's a bit of trimming (the areas near the clamps can't be machined) and a little sanding (we did fairly rough cuts because we had little time)
but it was pretty accurate
of course, you also have problems reaching some more recessed areas that need some manual work
depends a lot on the job
@Psycogeek yea, those things allow manual control
of course mass production is gonna be automatic
but sometimes you don't want to spend time drawing it up
for simpler jobs, you can type in individual instructions
or you can control the cutter with the arrow keys :D
CNC Simulator 2014
weirdly, our machine control program actually came with a virtual mode (simulation)... was pretty broken
also, the first time you set it up you need ot set the zero coordinates to match the jig you use... that's a moderately painful process
What was the general types of items that you were making (having it make)?

1. Don't eat until afternoot
2. At most eat once an hour small fruit
then why arent starving ethiopians more productive?
@Psycogeek We are superior ;)
or some of us could afford to eat less, while others cannot afford to eat more.
@Psycogeek You told me once that Black Friday is not the best day for deals. Can you tell me which day is? I juts have wishlist items that I want to buy in one snap so I am looking for that day which will offer me most reduced price.
13:00
@Boris_yo i was trying to explain that , it is not predictable, when the exact same product will be cheaper. Black friday does not define cheaper, even though it is "on sale" It could very well be that 2 months later it is on sale for way less.
In fact many items purchaced in Way to large of quanity for specific sales or holidays, will sell for less, once the Hype is over, to get rid of them.
There are price trending charts on the web somewhere, for singular products.
It seems to be happening more often now, that a really popular item , or highly reviewed item, will go up in price, as a item with similar specs (or better) that did not make it to EX: Toms Hardware Top list, will drop in price.
Sometimes it is a very crappy item, that nobody wants at all, that sells for $3 on black friday. The hype can get it moved off the shelf.
Any really new items , may very well be price reduced in the FIrst sale of them. But a few months later the Bugg free version comes out V2 (like motherboards) , and the initial hype is over, and the same board goes for $40 less.
So getting caught up in the Hype and new, and price , could be not only more money, but V1 too
When the dust settles , and the truth is known, and the reviews are out, but before it is sent off to china to clone.

@Bob Do you know how long those portable batteries chargers last? I won't use that product often and I am thinking if i should take 6000mAh or 9000mAh capacity.
As long as it improves the posted material that is a good thing.
I did assume he meant windows 1.0, 2.01 (I had that for years), 3.0, 3.1. 3.1 WTF (oh, for wo4rkgroups) and ending with the top of the line product scheduled for release in 1998 (aka win95)

@Boris_yo no idea, again, I use my laptop
fully charging my phone takes about 10% of a laptop battery
my laptop batteries are rated 62 Wh
9000 mAh @ 3.7 V would be about 33 Wh
of course, there's a lot of (in)efficiency to factor in
16:09
@Bob may as well rewrite -- there was an enormous non-backwards-compatible change in the kernel ABI between pre-NT and NT versions of Windows
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic 3.1 didn't even use Win32
that came with 95
3.1 used WinAPI, 16-bit, and he could probably run it in DOSBox with a copy of 3.1 o.O
> - DO NOT ASK FOR A COPY OF WINDOWS 3.x Even though Windows 3.x is really old now, it is not freeware. **But cheap copies can sometimes be found on ebay or thrift shops. **
...who the hell still has a copy to sell?
hm, I broke Ghetto Chat Markdown (TM) again
@allquixotic but is the move from 95/98/ME to NT really "enormous non-backwards-compatible"?
there's plenty of software designed for 9x that'll still run on XP or even 7
> Charles Petzold, writer of several books about programming against the Windows API, has said: "The original hello world program in the Windows 1.0 SDK was a bit of a scandal. HELLO.C was about 150 lines long, and the HELLO.RC resource script had another 20 or so more lines. (...) Veteran C programmers often curled up in horror or laughter when encountering the Windows hello-world program."

@Hennes You know of good earphones for $20-25 range preferrably with playback control?
No. I just used plain ones (though tasty ones according to my cat)
I had these, my cat ate them and I replaced them with the same model:
19:29
You can run Google Chrome OS from USB drive? howtogeek.com/128575/…
@Hennes No playback control...
I know. And none needed (for me)
I just connect them to the PC when I want to listen without disturbing others, or to the Samsung YP-1 when I am mobile
I am not sure how expensive an ipod is, but this is smaller and was quite cheap (15 euro). And it has lasted many years.

all I've got to say is that those Senn in-ear are a bang for the buck

Certainly a lot better than all the cheap one I previously used.
Anonymous
I'm going to build my own eGPU for some VJ needs... I hope I don't break anything
eGPU as in external GPU on a laptop via PCI-e? Or some thunderbolt version
Anonymous
@Hennes I'm going to do it via Expresscard
19:49
OK. So via a PCI-e lane on the expresscard bus
Anonymous
yea
Anonymous
I'm going to run some mild stressing live music visualisators in the thing
Anonymous
And I don't want to build a PC from scratch if I can just use a spare notebook and an eGPU
Calculation power should be uneffected. But transfer speed to and from the card might be relative slow. (only one lane, often at older PCI-e versions. So 2.5GHz or 5.0GHz)
Still, sounds like a real fun project. :)
Anonymous
@Hennes indeed, also, well, it's not like i'm raytracing and rendering shaders of shaders of grass within grass, just some abstract geometry and latency is the most important issue in my use case, not bandwidth
Anonymous
20:01
@Hennes it's gonna be a quite interesting setup
Anonymous
the notebook will get the music from just the aux-in and run the visualisators but i've got ahold with a script that fetchs metadata from Traktor
Anonymous
And if i manage to somehow communicate the VJ notebook with the DJ notebook (without adding too much CPU stress) I will add current song title and artist (or previous, depending on the latency and how good the Traktor metadata script is) to the visualisator
Anonymous
The visualisator will go through the eGPU to a projector
Anonymous
The projector doesn't need to be a fancy 1080p thingy nor to be very bright tho, the use case doesn't require it
Anonymous
So it'll be sorta a cheap installation :)
