not good
Well we get great snow in winter, and summer can be nice.. Just not today ;)
Also, does anyone know who Ravi Mohan is? I know he's from here.
@SimonSheehan doesn't ring a bell, but I'm not good with names
Ah. He's definitely from here and he's added me on Google+, but I'm not sure who he is on here.
oh, "here" as in SE...
14:04
@SimonSheehan no clue...
still doesn't ring a bell
Are we able to lookup users by email? @Sathya @DMA
@DMA57361 Thanks for that - SQL is on the catagory of things I'll have to know one day, but am currently too bored or disinterested to learn now. Also, Java happens to be on that list...
@new123456 use the API, then
@SimonSheehan users can't, diamonds can, but I'm not going to do so on the grounds that it's bordering on (or is) privacy breach
14:08
@DMA okay. I wasn't going to ask you too because of that. People need SOME privacy ;)
indeed, but thought I'd be explicit up front - but from a user perspective there's no way to use an email to find another user
unless you get funky with gravatars, but that's another issue entirely
This Google+ is a tad inconvenient in relation to facebook since you cannot seem to post on people's profiles.
It needs that feature big time
shrug haven't used it
That's the best part!
Nobody just spewing random crap all over my profile.
comments are at least focused around the topic at hand.
14:10
@new123456 Go with Python instead.
@DarthAndroid sounds like a solid improvement to me
@DarthAndroid good point. Do I have you on G+? :p
@DarthAndroid I agree. No more Hey Sally, this is Sue. I have no clue about the internet and privacy. I hope your diarrhea gets better soon. Type of things.
Let me check. You'd know if you did, I think.
I'm slowly losing track of things on there. Somehow when I "follow" people they add me into their "circle". I'm finding it a bit tricky so far but I do like the speed of the service
14:15
@SimonSheehan Yeah, you've added me :P
And it integrates nicely into all of googles features. I keep google as my homepage so I do get notifications there. @Darth great
Yup, it actually gets use from me because it's integrated into gmail. I have no reason to go to FB other than for FB, so I don't go to FB.
I still have to use Facebook. Only 2 of 140 friends made the switch :/. But I only access it from my iPod touch, sort of boycotting it on PC ;)
I was rather shocked how quickly and how many of my friends made the switch.
50+ by the time I got my invite.
I don't really use FB to keep up with my friends though, I chat with them in class or at work or over voice chat while playing games.
I'm too embedded to SWITCH, but I'm on both lol
14:20
Holy :o So far 99% of the people I have on google+ are from SE it seems.
FB doesn't really bother me since I blocked every annoying application years ago and I don't have anybody posting incredibly stupid things to my wall.
I used to have almost 400 people on Facebook and then went on this big deleting spree. At this point I only talk to 3 people on it because it's my only contact with them
I wouldn't know if FB was bothering me. I haven't logged in in 18+months
@DarthAndroid I was about to say I was up to ~3 months without logging on to FB, but well 18 wins :P
My rule for FB was only add people I know IRL, since I couldn't really sort and organize them properly.
14:24
Stack Exchange is my 3rd biggest circle, currently at 46 people
Be back in a bit, breakfast is needed.
btw my G+ URL is in my user profile :p
I need SE friends, lol, I should do the same ^^;
btw, @DMA57361 my consecutive visited days streak in SU was not broken :P
@Sathya ah good, you're still in "ridiculous" territory then :)
14:30
@DMA57361 yes I am :P hehe :D
4 days away from fanatic on gaming - will be my fourth now I think :/
hehe
@Sathya How many days?
14:45
ooh
Would love to hear what borders "ridiculous" :p
new backblaze storage pod specs. version 1 was 67 TB, version 2 is 135 tb
@JourneymanGeek what have they done this time, high-spec disks?
@JourneymanGeek Hitatchi disks? really?
14:48
apparently so
seriously though... who has 8K to spare and wants a ludicrious amount of storage? ;p
/me thinks if i built such a system, i'd go for zfs tho
"As of this week, Backblaze has more than 9,000 hard drives spinning in the datacenter"...woah
and swap the boot drive for a SSD ;p
@Sathya holy 0.o
14:50
@tombull89: backblaze is awesome simply cause everything but the case is quite literally stuff you can get off the shelf ;p
visited: 73 days, 73 consecutive
625/8 :(
prolly cause i wasn't here last week when i was exploring the old railway ;p
@JourneymanGeek Yeah just reading the spec list...I mean, woah. I could go out and make that, and sell storage space to my friends/family.
Hmm, I like that idea.
BullockStor.
14:52
precisely ;p
eh, you could even have a bullock cart full of drives as a logo ;p
@SimonSheehan :p
I've already built my own file server already, but software raid and a mere 6TB storage.
@JourneymanGeek Haha. No.
the only problem i see for DIYing it is the power supplies
You guys have been here a long time, I'm still the new guy ;)
@JourneymanGeek I've got a 500W PSU in mine (720W in the backblaze) with 3 storage disks and a 320GB boot.
14:54
@JourneymanGeek erm, is it my eyes or are the cabinets floating in this image -> files.backblaze.com/blog_pics/…
@tombull89: they have a pair, with a custom wiring harness
@DMA57361 haha. My god that must be noisy in there.
optical illusion methinks ;p
its a datacenter ;p
naturally
@JourneymanGeek Really? Didn't realise there was two.
there are ;p
14:55
no, seriously, look at the shadow from the legs... it looks wrong
i'm quite sure its an opical illusion
@tombull89: read the bill of components ;p
ah
no
they're not legs
that's the doors

in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Overflow Chat, 38 secs ago, by mootinator
Oh. The thing the news did yesterday that I found annoying: "Widespread Heat Wave Across Canada!"
in Tavern on the Meta on Meta Stack Overflow Chat, 26 secs ago, by mootinator
Southern Ontario has always = all of Canada to national news people, but it's still kinda annoying.
(cc @SimonSheehan )
@Sathya that's a heatwave?
@Sathya that statement by mootinator is very true :p
15:02
if i'm not wrong my country gets that temperature all year round
@bckbck I'd say 38deg C in a place where -30 deg C is standard classifies as heatwave :p
@Sathya wow, ok
This is Canada, how will the polar bears manage! And my igloo might melt today!
@SimonSheehan :O
wut.

A: Setting up DNS server on a laptop.

JdeBPThe DNS is not the answer to an HTTP problem. So put down the chocolate-covered banana and step away from the European currency systems. You never really wanted "all computers in the network to use my hosts file" at all. If you want to restrict HTTP access for certain WWW sites, the correct ...

15:11
@tombull89 That's.. a bad idea
So put down the chocolate-covered banana and step away from the European currency systems.
Had a good laugh there

Q: What should we do about users adding nonsense to question just to meet quality standards?

KyleI just came across this question on Super User. The user wanted a SSL VPN client and proceeded to ask: "Is there any (free) SSL VPN Client for Windows?" obviously this question is too short and quality standards algorithm picked it up and told him to add some more details (as it should). Instead...

c'mon folks, rep cap me on Meta!
@Sathya hang on, a 2k+ rep user did that? Poor show, old chap, very poor show.
15:15
@tombull89 yep!
Very disappointing to see a 2k+ Rep user resorting to something like that Sigh
49 question/89 answers? meh.
Why do you say that @tombull89? What's the relation between his questions and answers?
"Personally I think those people should be suspended" - Michael Mrozek. Harsh, but I agree for a blatant ignoring of the rules.
@SimonSheehan actually, I thought he'd been a member for a lot shorter than he actually has been, ignore that.
Ah okay
I think just closing his question is punishment enough. Or a 1 day suspension
15:21
@SimonSheehan It was [closed as dupe] though, not [closed as crap]
@tombull89 Good point.
yay! hit rep cap on Meta!
Haha, nice @Sathya. My closest to the cap was 160 I think
15:37
Heading onto meta... underneath the question it said "was this question useful to you?" with a yes/no button... i logged in and it was gone. What does that result get used for?
can someone @ me? I need to do a test
@bckbck
@Sathya thanks
what's the test for, btw?

Q: Clickable desktop notifications for chat

bckbckI like the desktop notification functionality, but it is rather inconvenient to have the notification popping up on my screen and not being able to click it (to go to the chat). Can we have GMail-like notifications for chat, in which the chat window will focus upon clicking it?

this^
15:44
Wait a second... @bckbck how did you get that to show up?
@SimonSheehan get what?
@bckbck that notification
@SimonSheehan You need chrome i.imgur.com/FHQSg.png
@SimonSheehan I'm using Chrome and the desktop notification setting enabled (on the right)
@Sathya boo, I like my firefox :(
@Journeyman you there?
15:50
@Sathya ok
@Sathya I Think our mystery Ravi Mohan is actually @JourneymanGeek. They both have pictures of a similar dog!
right, nginx install done on my VPS
ah yes
indeed
I had known his first name, but that's a fairly common name in India
Oh, okay. I saw all his pictures of India and figured you might know, but now that's solved :)
@Sathya also, star wars old republic - WANT
@SimonSheehan not going to be available in India :(
:(
regional limitations = sadness.
15:58
@Sathya you serious? :( Can't buy it and proxy in? :p
@SimonSheehan I doubt.. plus the exchange rates et al will make it unpractical
@Sathya aw :( That's not fun. Do you game at all normally?
@SimonSheehan used to be a pretty heavy gamer, nowadays can't find much time
@SimonSheehan - My Steam id, my Raptr id & my Xfire id
@Sathya quite the games library. Here's mine. Please ignore the profile picture, been meaning to change it for 2 years now steamcommunity.com/id/iSimon
@SimonSheehan LOL
you should also try out Raptr :)
16:07
@Sathya I heard it uses a lot of resources :o
quite the contrary
been using it for a long time
Oh? Do tell, what would be the reason to use it? I just stopped using xfire because I wasn't talking to anyone on it
Screenshots, ingame overlay, tracking achievements
I mainly use it for tracking
But doesn't steam do that all?
ingame overlay for chat is pretty nice, I play MP with few friends often
@SimonSheehan it didn't a year ago
it was introduced few months ago
16:11
@Sathya ah. I can't seem to use the steam screenshots well, I use ingame stuff. Doesn't it let you use MSN on the overlay?
yes
but ew who uses MSN ;p
Me, still sadly :P Mostly IRC now though.
XMPP, baby.
I've heard of that, but what is XMPP?
I want to know what's XMPP
type this ^
16:14
@Sathya type it where :s
type it in chat
I want to know what's XMPP
Was that paper clip supposed to come up or something? :p
@Sathya I use bitlbee though, relays all those IM clients through an IRC server ;)
XMPP is the jabber protocol, right? Same one that gtalk uses?
yep, @DarthAndroid
@SimonSheehan yeah :p
Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) is an open-standard communications protocol for message-oriented middleware based on XML (Extensible Markup Language). The protocol was originally named Jabber, and was developed by the Jabber open-source community in 1999 for, originally, near-real-time, extensible instant messaging (IM), presence information, and contact list maintenance. Designed to be extensible, the protocol today also finds application in VoIP and file transfer signaling. Unlike most instant messaging protocols, XMPP uses an open systems approach of development and a...

Q: Is it OK to tell your password to an admin?

VJoI am working in a small company (20 employees) as a senior SW engineer. After having some email problems, our newly employed IT administrator asked me for a password to see with hosting company why exactly. Without any thought I gave him my password. After maybe 30 minutes, I realized that in m...

17:07
@Linker3000 no real definite answer :/ I think it will eventually get closed but the opinions will be good to read
17:19
@Sathya quite looking forward to DX:HR
Best parking job ever
@SimonSheehan naa, he's over the line
lucky sod
uhhh... so someone's a bit of an apple-basher then?
"Apple also intends to make it available for sale to its fanbois on USB sticks, which is a feature Microsoft pioneered decades ago"...or just a moron...I dont' think that was in place.
17:33
yeah, it's possibly a really bad attempt at humour... hard to tell really
That guy used the word "fanboii's" in his article. I now disregard anything he said.
I honestly think Lion is more Gnome 3 derived than anything, which is good.
@SimonSheehan having only ever used the Mac OS for the time would take to reboot it into Windows, I'll have to take your word for it
@DMA I'm still using OS X 10.4 or something on PowerPC eMacs. Im no expert :p
@SimonSheehan well those numbers and words mean very little to me, so you beat my expertise by quite a margin, I'm sure
@DMA let's put it down to a year; 2003. I suppose you only use windows or Linux?
17:50
'03, ouch O_o and yeah I'm quite a heavy gamer so quite Windows-centric. Most Linux experience has been terminal-only stuff for Uni
Ah okay. I'm quite the gamer, and couldn't never really PC game until 2 years ago. I'm a self Proclaimed team fortress 2 addict ;)
Going down to my neighbors to drop off a controller and play some pokemon, be back later
And now I'm at my friends.
18:11
@SimonSheehan it's like some kind of crazy witchcraft science!
right, all fed, time for more Dredmor :P
@Sathya were at 46c now :P

I am trying to figure out a way to stop the date (or date and time) from changing in windows server 2003... I can't figure out a way to word it though. Most of the search results are how to prevent people from changing it...
Any ideas?
as in you don't want the clock to advance at all? you want the system clock to stop?
yes
I want it to stay at July 21st 2011 forever...
mind if I ask why? seems like an odd thing to do :/
and, I've no idea how you'd do that - it'd mean freezing the mobo's clock as well presumably
learning about vsphere and using the 60 day trial
It's a VM
I know it is a weird request...
:D
I mean, if you even have something you want me to try that could fatally destroy the OS, that is fine...
I wonder what side effects freezing the clock would have... could be quite an interesting experiment really :)
19:10
I can rebuild it
Yeah!
Set up an NTP server to always feed a specific time
nope, genuinely no idea how to do that :)
It is a virtual machine running on VMWare Workstation.
Set VM to use NTP server and update frequently.
hmm...
19:11
Won't freeze it completely
But it should prolong trials plenty :)
Can you make an NTP server only broadcast one time that never changes?
I don't know.
possibly that's just offsetting the problem to somewhere else
yeah...
Great idea though @DarthAndroid
19:13
And if you can't configure the NTP service to do that, then I'd just write a small server application that listens on the NTP port and returns one time.
I wonder if I could have the same server be the NTP server
I would have to setup two server 2003 boxes... It wouldn't be that time consuming though...
It's just I already have an ESX host running as a VM
The computer I am using right now as the host
And the server 2003 I am configuring.
With only 8GB of RAM
tsktsk
ram is cheap these days, get up with the times!
:D
8GB?
I can't fit anymore into this laptop
I have 2 4GB sticks
19:17
(My system regularly uses 6-10GB)
Test it locally before putting it on a production setup :P
Thanks @SimonSheehan
(I abuse it hardcore! :D )
lol...
@SimonSheehan do you know how to break the service so it only spits out one time?
@David Not the faintest clue, sorry.
19:19
it's ok, thanks!
come to think of it, it'd probably be even easier to write a vb app that sets the same datetime every minute or so, and run it on startup
since apparently controlling the system clock is really easy in VB
Well, would you know of a link or know how to do something like that
I am very shaky with VB
It's like Date = '1/1/1970 12:00'
or something obnoxiously stupid-- it was on thedailywtf
hmm
That sounds perfect...
thanks
19:31
ooo
I see...
I thought this would do something, but it is failing...
' format the date
Date = month & "/" & day & "/" & year
<html>
<body>

<script type="text/vbscript">
' format the date
Date = month & "08/08" & day & "08/08" & year
</script>

</body>
</html>
There it is...
any ideas @DarthAndroid
I am not very good with VB... Not a lot of experience...
The line you want would be something like Date = "1/1/2011 12:00 PM" inside of a file named Settime.vbs and then try double-clicking it and see if it changes the time.
thanks!
( I don't know VB at all either, I'm just pulling this out of my &*$& )
19:46
wow
So... let me know if it worked? :D
then the issue will only be adding that script to task scheduler to run on startup and every hour or something.
illegal assignment: 'Date'
I tried taking out the time
I thought it had to be in an html file...
I think this will help me
20:02
Does anyone know how to download songs off SoundCloud?
Maybe jDownloader can @SimonSheehan
@slhck Yeah, someone just suggested that. Ill give it a shot!
hey there @Linker3000
and hi @SimonSheehan of course :P
@slhck found this great site called offliberty that downloaded it for me :D
Boom, instant mp3
20:08
oh well then that's okay too :D
gah, I just had the weirdest internet problem evarrr
SU seems to be very Apple-y since OS X Lion came out. The question editor should detect the OS X or OSX pattern and nudge people over to the Apple site!
@slhck do tell o.o
I decided to drop a question to SU, so here's what I had until it worked again
@Linker3000 Why?
@slhck does OS X have a firewall similar to windows firewall that might be blocking them?
I had a similar issue a few days ago
20:10
@SimonSheehan No, it wasn't OS X only, and I hadn't changed any configuration or anything
@slhck Well, what's the use of having a separate Apple site then?
Apple hardware
@Linker3000 It's a separate site that can attract its own visitors – it's their own community
I think we need cross-site tags

Q: Users asking ubuntu questions should be informed about askubuntu ?

M. Night ShyamalanWhen someone asks a question with ubuntu tag they should be redirected to a page informing them about askubuntu and how asking it on that will expose the question to the more ubuntu experts. Then give them a choice of posting it on Super User itself or posting it to Ask Ubuntu instead. This wil...

Same thing, just for Ubuntu
20:11
Like... if I tag a question [osx], then it will show up on the apple site (even if the question is posted on SU)
@DarthAndroid "This is a collaboratively edited question and answer site for power users of Apple hardware and software."
Apple hardware means it can hold questions that SU can't
@DarthAndroid Heh, yeah, I've always been against having too many separate sites when they are overlapping
@slhck Hmm - I see that got quote downvoted
ergo, purpose.
kinda like how migrated questions work; someone on AskDifferent would still be taken to SU if they click on the question, but by tagging it with an apple-related tag, it'll still show up in the AskDifferent site like a normal question.
20:13
@DarthAndroid Yep, but it's a hardware and SOFTWARE site - says in the title
The thing is.. when you're in a grocery store and you ask for the most basic apples (heh), would they tell you to go to the fruit store next door?
Right.
So hardware and software questions are appropriate for it.
It's been stated before by the mods: When a question is appropriate for two sites, and it is on one of those two sites, it will not be migrated.
Ah well, twas but a thought.
It might be Apple.SE has some seriously great questions/answers as well
But I've never checked out that site, tbh :P
20:15
See, same here
which is why I like my cross-site tags idea
they'd be like symlinks.
so that questions which fit in multiple communities get the benefit of appearing in multiple communities.
Mind you - we need to Push the apple site:

Q: Now that Lion is out, help promote Ask Different!

Joel SpolskyNow that Lion is shipping, there will be zillions of mac users upgrading, and they'll have lots of questions. And since all those questions will be new, Ask Different will have as good a shot at having the best answer than any of those, you know, competitive sites. Essentially, this is a great ti...

yeah but not by telling people NOT to go to Super User :D
@slhck Not what I said - I suggested that the Q's be pushed over
@Linker3000 it'd have the same effect though I guess.. nobody would care to ask on SU anymore if everything is moved there automatically
@slhck What's the problem with that if the Q is more suited to the other site?
Anyway...nuff of that.
20:19
But it's not in the example's you've provided.
@Linker3000 Because I don't think it's "more suited" at all, only "equally suited" (?)
The point is that a question about 10.7 is equally suited for both SU an... yeah.
Blimey - everyone has goth-look logos apart from my QR fuzz.
Lots of black!
o.o we do. oh my
heh, creepy
20:22
Heh
screenshots it
I dunno if gothic is the word I'd use, though.
Anyone see the new dark knight trailer? Looks epic
@SimonSheehan No, haven't yet – The Dark Knight was the only Batman movie I've ever seen tbh :D
There you go @slhck ;)
I only saw the dark knight, but this looks like an epic continuation

Hi everyone! I’m the math intern, and I thought I’d introduce myself by sharing a little something from what I’ve been doing. A little about me: I’m a moderator and frequent contributor at math.SE: In real life, I’m a rising senior at MIT. I have a math blog, Annoying Precision, which unfortunately is not very accessible to non-mathematicians (sorry!). I think using the internet to spread knowledge more effectively is great, so I’m a big fan of the Stack Exchange network. This summer, my job is to look at the Stack Exchange network’s data and see if I can find anything interesting.  …

Its unfortunate Heath Ledger died...he played the joker brilliantly
Yes he did, didn't know he could actually play like that
Um, yeah...
Well, if you click that and they say it was stolen, they are actually right! :D
So I'll give them that

Temperature is even higher than expected
We are now at 37, 49 with humidity
celsius? nice!
I wish we had a decent summer for once
@slhck but i love winter :(
Oh well, everybody wants what they can't have :P
20:44
Hehe, naturally. But hey, means for good swimming days! Except i cant breath out there ;)
@Linker3000 Well at least that's not unusual for you! ;)
Yeah, but it's pretty pisspoor for the South Coast
Meh.
I've always enjoyed the British weather
21:04
Time to hit up a classic game - Mafia ;)
@SimonSheehan Oh that's a nice game
One of the few I actually played
@slhck its got a very good story. Wish it had some GTA like free roaming, but hey
