Yeah, I remember having no clue how to shut down before logging out and then figured it was in the power settings.
> Duration 64 days, 03:37:01
Wait it's been in the power settings this whole time?
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid Wait, where do you get that info?
I just restarted last week due to a graphics driver bug, and a few weeks before 'cause of a GPU swap :(
I think I had almost two months going before that.
Network Center -> Connection -> properties
well
Bob
Bob
o.O
nope, not happening here
16:13
network Center -> click on your connection
Bob
Bob
my router has worse uptime than my PC :P
Ahh
my PC has a switch between it and router
and switch is on the same UPS as the PC
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid yea, switch uptime is pretty good (obviously), but I recently installed a new switch, so.......
so connection uptime is generally reflective of system uptime
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid good idea.. my switch is directly in mains :(
I need to get a powerboard for my UPS
16:14
The idea is that critical infrastructure has a UPS between it and mains
Bob
Bob
there's one spare IEC port on the back, but I don't have the cable to take advantage of that
primary screen, switch, router, PC, cable modem
Bob
Bob
I only have my screen and PC on the UPS
How big is the UPS?
Bob
Bob
the modem, router, rpi router and other networking equipment is in another room
the switch in this room should be moved onto the UPS, though
@DarthAndroid y'know, I forgot
16:16
@Bob This was the last state before deletion:
@ECHO OFF
SETLOCAL ENABLEDELAYEDEXPANSION
FOR /r %%F IN (*.stp) DO (
  SET cache=%%F
  SET archiveName=!cache:~0:-3!
  ECHO !archiveName!
)
ENDLOCAL
I have it done in PS now though
function CompressStp( $path = $pwd ) {
    Write-Host "Checking "$path
    foreach( $item in Get-ChildItem $path ) {
        if( Test-Path $item.FullName -PathType Container ) {
            CompressStp $item.FullName
        } elseif( Test-Path $item.FullName -Include "*.stp" ) {
            Write-Host "Compressing"$item
            $archiveName = $item.FullName.Substring(0,$item.FullName.Length-3) + "zip"
            $command = "& 7z a -tZip -mm=Deflate -mx=9 " + $archiveName + " " + $item.FullName;
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid 1000 VA
That's the whole thing I wanted to do
Bob
Bob
but it's been two years
not sure how the battery is now
incidentally, swapping GPUs has reduced my power usage at idle from ~200 W to ~125 W
that's going from a MSI GTX 560 Ti w/ Twin Frozr III to a MSI GTX 560 w/ Twin Frozr II
main reason for swapping was the other one was just far too loud... but both efficiency and performance seem to have gone up :\
I can't remember if mine's 1000VA or 1500VA. I've removed two of my GPUs, so I'm sure I can get by with a lot less now, but the CyberPower UPSs shut down if you go over their rated wattage. Had to upgrade to one of their bigger UPSs
Bob
Bob

Q: How to create a zip archive with PowerShell?

Valentin VasilyevIs it possible to create a zip archive using PowerShell?

@DarthAndroid Incidentally, mine's CyberPower too :D
I just read the 1000 VA off the label on the bottom
16:20
@Bob That seems like a different task
Bob
Bob
they've also labelled it 530 W, which is a bit low... assumes power factor of 0.53, which is far lower than your typical modern SMPS
a gold 80+ should be over 0.9
@OliverSalzburg oh, I just meant as an alternative to 7za :P
Morning all! Hands up if you hate driving to work in -25 C weather
Bob
Bob
@CanadianLuke The day I experience that here, we're all fucked.
@Bob It may be a bit low, but if you go over 530W on the power draw, it will Beep for about 10 seconds and then kill power.
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid :(
that sucks
16:23
@Bob Where are you located?
Bob
Bob
@CanadianLuke Sydney, Australia
Which is the reason I have the 1500VA or whatever it is, because I needed the 810W power draw back when I had dual GTX580s and a GTX295 in the box
Oh, you lucky guy...
Bob
Bob
@CanadianLuke Eh... I think I might prefer cold over heat.
At least you can just wear more.
But -25 is a bit extreme.
True...
But when I went to Cuba, we could at least get acclimatized!
Bob
Bob
16:25
@DarthAndroid ouch
My GPU has a max TDP of 150 W
CPU is 95 W
bunch of HDDs, let's say no more than 25 W idle (maybe 50-60 W peak? but they won't peak at the same time as full CPU/GPU load)
mobo, I'll give it 100 W - far more than actual, but meh
That's at or under 400 W, thankfully.
Maybe +50 W for the screen (probably more than actual?)
so I should be well below any safety cutoff
Bob
Bob
@AvinashRaj Who becomes WHAT now?
@Bob Oh. Yeah, I wanted to use 7z for the ability to control all the things :P
@Bob One of our mod attains ceo dom
@HackToHell who?
16:29
;p
55 mins ago, by HackToHell
ohai, luks lyk I'm CEO of MSFT :p
/facepalm
wrong Sathya
that would be funny, a SEO of MSFT in Root Access...
16:34
look out for some of my countrymen (whom embarrass the whole lot of us) to start making claims like "oh no the Indians are taking over the world!" -_-
Yep, and it uses 7z as the core library for most of its compression cmdlets. I know, becaues I implemented it ;) +1 — x0n Jul 21 '09 at 1:10
they tried to take over AU and they couldn't... yeah, the world is easier
next stop, Indian POTUS
maybe even female
@Braiam wow
Bob
Bob
@Braiam A SEO? What, link all the MS pages?
@HackToHell yeah, to compress to zip D:
16:36
@allquixotic our evil plan is working
2
@HackToHell now that you've exposed it as blatantly evil, it'll backfire on you :P
then there'll be an Irish-native PM of India :P
She is effectively the PM
lesson learned: if you're going to be evil, KEEP IT A SECRET!
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Ugh.
Anyone has inputs on using female over women?
Bob
Bob
16:39
It's not a good thing when representatives are elected for race, gender, etc..
@allquixotic :P :P
Bob
Bob
Sure, if they would be good on other merits.
@Bob I think a lot of people get bored of the same old same old and vote for whoever's more different -- it's the trendy diversity thing now
Bob
Bob
But "hey, (s)he's X, I'm X, I'll show solidarity by voting for them" is just plain stupid.
@allquixotic That might be even worse.
And on the other, unfortunate, side is people attacking those for being different.
Lots of Americans would've votes against Obama for that reason.
a female disabled West African-born military veteran lesbian is basically a slam-dunk for the US presidency ;p all the activist groups bundled up into one body
16:41
I found a bug in ping! D:
Bob
Bob
A possibly big reason Gillard had trouble was because she's female.

Abbott is a fucktard.

@jokerdino We generally don't care too much here. Most of us.
16:42
@Bob careful what you say over HTTP
2
Kevin Rudd is a cool guy. He follows me on Twitter.
the ANSA (Australian NSA; made up acronym) is watching
Bob
Bob
Actually, the USA might be the most religious anglo country...
@allquixotic ASIS?
Wait, no.
ASIS == CIA, ASIO == FBI, DSD == NSA
@Bob depends on where in the USA
Bob
Bob
16:43
so either ASIO or DSD
@Bob I'm never buying a soundcard now, since the ASIO will be inside it D:
(bad acronym overloading joke)
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Acronym overloading. Love it.
Oh, they renamed the DSD to ASD o.O
when'd that happen?
probably renamed it to deflect public attention from it
"if it's not named the same thing, people will forget about it"
c.f. blackwater
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I don't think most people here know about it :P
.......
> Slogan: Reveal their secrets ... Protect our own
> Under the 1948 UKUSA agreement, ASD's intelligence is shared with its foreign partner agencies:
YOU'RE DOING A GREAT JOB
@allquixotic west african born would be an issue ;p
16:50
@JourneymanGeek not necessarily -- you can be a non-naturalized US citizen born outside the United States
Bob
Bob
"protect our own" pfffft
I thought US presidents must be US born?
@JourneymanGeek They must.
@JourneymanGeek It's complicated -- visalaw.com/05jan1/2jan105.html
there are two general classifications of US citizenship: citizenship by birth, and citizenship by naturalization
@Bob intelligence sharing is not new.
16:53
citizenship by birth can be attained either by being born within the US, or by meeting one of those very complicated criteria in the link I just posted
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino It was a joke.
@Bob oops
if you meet the criteria for "citizenship by birth", you can run for President
even if you are born outside the US
I am going to become the POTUS!
on the other hand if you don't meet the criteria for citizenship by birth then you can't run for President
16:54
Can I become a Governor for Cali at least?
@jokerdino certainly -- you can sneak into Cali on a boat, never pay taxes, and become Governor of California
you could probably become Governor of California even if you never set foot in the US and run your campaign entirely online
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Ooooh, new goal
And on that note, I'm actually going to sleep now.
I want to believe you. And shut up Clippy.
17:08
Cruel cruel clippy. Very insensitive
Clippy now solves hearth problems... AL BABAJI CONTROLS CLIPPY!?!
Bob
Bob
@Braiam That looks disturbingly close to Comic Sans...
And Bob is sound asleep.
Like, for real.
@jokerdino I know, it's too bad we can't reach him to talk to him about headphones while he's asleep
17:20
Imagine being awoken because someone posted an image that had a font similar to Comic Sans.
His brain must be hardwired to this chatroom, constantly processing the info even when asleep.
Bob
Bob
@jokerdino The horror!
You know, I am feeling asleep and it is only 2300.
You are probably looking at a 0600 there.
Bob
Bob
24hr time looks weird
4:20 am
I like the 24h because that allows me to exercise my arithmetic. ^_^
@jokerdino so you're about 315 years old? wow... nice healthcare in India
also, nice job time traveling into the past, thus violating general relativity
17:25
Haha
There is no gravity here, because it is yet to be discovered.

Bit I do not.
Someone tell John that Christmas has ended. Two months ago.
But it will start again in only 10 months. Best get out all the decorations.

Listen to this one!
Ash
Ash
is memory leaks permanant ?
I mean , a program creates a reference to a memory location in ( main memory ? )
and forgets to de-allocate it.How is memory leaks relevent in tis case : memory
leak in firefox ?
from the context of firefox I think leaks aint permanent , so whats the big deal ?
@Ash My Firefox always memory leaks.
Ash
Ash
can i count that as permanent ? :p
@Ash Until you restart Firefox, yes.
19:49
@Ash it depends on where the memory leak is
memory leaked by userspace programs is automatically reclaimed and added to the free pool by the kernel's memory management subsystem
memory leaked by the kernel itself is basically memory that a device driver or the kernel itself said it was using, but then stopped using and never marked it as free again
since the kernel doesn't have a kernel watching over it, and since the kernel doesn't stop/start during the duration of the operating system, memory leaked by the kernel is "lost" until the system is powered off or restarted
also, my statement above about the kernel reclaiming memory from userspace processes only applies when those processes are terminated, not during their run
20:02
Can hardly hold my gaming memories' tears...
Ash
Ash
20:16
@allquixotic so , no memory leaks persist over reboots ?
@Ash no, never
Ash
Ash
ah..Now I gets it :)
a memory leak is just a failure to mark memory as "unused" after a piece of code is finished using it
2
when you reboot, your entire memory is cleared anyway, so all leaks from the previous boot are "destroyed" along with the old instance of the OS
Ash
Ash
also , I came across directory stream and wondered what it was ?
vague Google search dint return anything ....
@Ash Context? Where did you come across it?
Ash
Ash
20:23
its in the context of opendir()
!> The DIR data type represents a directory stream.
Oh
That's analogous to a file stream.
Directories are basically special files that contain a list of files that should be inside the directory

anyone else here in the SR private beta?
i can send email invites
@allquixotic Is it any good?
So, a site where I can ask what the best program is to surf the web?
@OliverSalzburg well, give me your email address and find out, I'll give you a private beta invite :) I think it will turn out OK once they work out the kinks
21:34
Or if I should appacked or a BASH-coded-HTTPd ?
got it
As long as I am making half-jokes:
I just accidentally ran an SSL certificate through Perl. It gave 40 warnings before finally deciding it wasn't Perl code.

21:48
wth... Why can't I delete that post?
Which post? the one with your email? (Waited too long?)
Maybe? Is 3 minutes too long?
(yeah, the one with my email)
(not that it's a big surprise or hard to figure out)
I am not sure how long the edit windows is. I thought it was up to 2 minutes.
which would mean that 3 min is indeed too long
After that you would need a mod to delete it.
@DarthAndroid I removed it for you
@OliverSalzburg Thanks!
Also, thanks for the invite @allquixotic (At least, I think it was you that sent it)
22:05
@DarthAndroid yeah it was
Night all, bedtime for little irrational numbers like i.

@allquixotic please? :)

@Bob oh, i already know your email, fox
invite sent
Bob
Bob
@DarthAndroid I was shocked.
@allquixotic Thanks!
I'll try it when I get home :P
@allquixotic This place is amazing! I can feel the reputation just flowing into my veins. Yes... Yesssss...
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic "1 Dolby Royalty" in the software list of the Dell desktops I'm looking at :P
@Bob o_O
@Bob I'm picking up a Sound Blaster Z (apparently current-gen) on my way home from work from Best Buy. It does both Dolby and DTS, with native TOSLINK S/PDIF in/out (yes, S/PDIF in!), and its DAC does native 24-bit, 192 KHz
23:21
@allquixotic: yeah, and tested loves them
and the pod!
Best Buy has a 30-day return policy, so I'm going to carefully unpackage it, and if it sucks or the drivers are crap or whatever, I'm getting my $ back
that is literally THE ONLY reason why Best Buy is still on my purchasing radar
ahh podless model :/
unsure about something? buy it there, because you can unpackage it, use it, decide you hate it, and send it back
on Amazon, if you unpackage it, it's yours
Best Buy probably realizes this is their main reason for continued corporate existence so I highly doubt they'll be anal about people returning stuff opened
gtg, back later tonight
Bob
Bob
23:35
@allquixotic Price?
@allquixotic heh, officeworks is similar
(except they also have a beat-by-5% policy, making them cheaper than online if identical item)
(and they're pretty friendly in general)
23:47
BOO YA!
wow and just when I thought internet couldn't get any faster than mine... (ok I knew it could get faster)
