@Bob Isn't gzip+exec cheating?
Bob
Bob
@OliverSalzburg Is it?
@Bob No idea. I don't know the rules
Bob
Bob
It's self-contained in the language, heck, it's not even using non-ASCII characters.
There's languages designed for golfing that use extended Unicode for keywords :P
I saw some posts in hot questions that used CodeGolfScript or something like that
It made no sense
Bob
Bob
Heh.
@OliverSalzburg The languages are designed to do a lot in few characters, but they're allowed because they're still general languages (not specialised for a specific problem)
@OliverSalzburg On the use of eval (exec in Python): meta.codegolf.stackexchange.com/q/447/4163
@OliverSalzburg In the tag:
> Study the language and the built-in libraries thoroughly. There are often “hidden” features that can solve the problem in much less bytes.

@Ramhound Well, I guess the user was a student...he accepted my answer.

A: Creating an intermediate computer server

gparyaniYou say that you are a student. I know that Microsoft offers free copies of Windows Server to its students through the dreamspark service. What you can do is set up a server that is running a server OS (I'd say 2012 R2, the latest version as of posting) and connect it to the lab network. Assuming...

@Ramhound And while we were disputing about whether he was a student, I quietly flagged the answer for moderator attention and asked that the comments be cleaned as they pertain to a minor point in the post.
@Ramhound As long as the user has access to the local Intranet and has a copy of Windows Server (or Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows 7/Vista Enterprise/Ultimate, or even Windows XP Professional), he can publish RemoteApps.

JamieCan I use ping to increase internet speed? ping [IPv4 of wifi] -n 100000 Is this increasing my internet speed?

whut?
03:14
@JourneymanGeek the sheer ignorance espoused by that question makes me want to throw things.
it's 2014, and people are still at that level?
he should have all electronics in his house confiscated and he should be sent into an undeveloped jungle to live in a hut.
@JourneymanGeek I was thinking one possibe thing it would "do" is to resolve once, putting a resolve into the dns cache. other than that who knows what he is thinking?
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Hey, he's trying to learn.
I won't fault him for that.
@Bob probably his older (and slightly less naive) sibling told him "if you do ping a lot it'll make your internet faster" while laughing under their breath
not too dissimilar from the old alt-f4 trick
Bob
Bob
I'm more annoyed at the people who claim that kind of thing as a truth, honestly.
@allquixotic Yea, those people piss me off.
OK, youtube videos are unbelievable. But still, pinging increase my loading page speed a bit - anybody explain? — Jamie 1 hour ago
Yup.
YouTube. Explains a lot.
@allquixotic thanks to that ALT-F4 trick i learned that many programs can be terminated with alt-f4 :-) i would rarely ever use any shortcut.

one of those things that I'd really wish we could do on chat.
@JourneymanGeek Ever worked as contractor?
fuck, to compile cool reader I need the Android ndk and it's 439 mb >.<
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell You think that's big?
@JourneymanGeek Ya. Well, as long as the reputation requirement is there, I've thrown some other sites at him.
04:44
why do you need to compile it?
@Bob It's big for me :P
It will take me several hours to download it
@JourneymanGeek I'm trying to fix a minor bug
Bob
Bob
@HackToHell I meant compared to just about every other significant devtool, it's... tiny.
Well, devtools used in enterprise environments.
I've downloaded many gigabytes worth of Eclipse in the last few months (none of which works, either :\)
you have the fox luck @Bob
Android studio is far better than eclipse
Understanding what gradle was took some time though :P
@Bob Any examples ?
Bob
Bob
04:54
@HackToHell Meh. As I said, consider ~400 MB small
Windows SDK. 500-600 MB. Windows DDK. 600 MB. Visual Studio. Many GB.
Eclipse for Java EE is 250 MB. That hurts when you download it a couple of times.
NetBeans is quite light at 185 GB.
I know this isn't a math room, but if anyone here is good with math, could they please come to the math chat room and help me out a little?
Bob

that rules me out :P

In mathematics, a unit circle is a circle with a radius of one. Frequently, especially in trigonometry, the unit circle is the circle of radius one centered at the origin (0, 0) in the Cartesian coordinate system in the Euclidean plane. The unit circle is often denoted S1; the generalization to higher dimensions is the unit sphere. If (x, y) is a point on the unit circle, then |x| and |y| are the lengths of the legs of a right triangle whose hypotenuse has length 1. Thus, by the Pythagorean theorem, x and y satisfy the equation :x^2 + y^2 = 1. Since x² = (−x)² for all x, and sinc...

@gparyani I have no clue what you're talking about.
I'm Australian.
> The Advanced Placement (AP) is a program in the United States and Canada
Well then.
@Bob You have IB courses then.
to be fair, AP is not normally taught at a high school level with the same amount of rigor as most (serious) 4-year unis
sometimes it is, but in most public schools, they dumb it down
Bob
Bob
@gparyani I believe that's only if you want to go into IB?

I'm currently pursuing AP Calculus AB and AP Chemistry...
we had some folks take Calculus BC and Physics BC and only one passed

@JourneymanGeek Mine's accepted, though.
they're pretty handy I must say, especially if you need a ghetto AP/repeater on windows, with the stock ralink/mediatek driver
@gparyani: I mean, I'm aware of that question what about it?
@gparyani I dont know but check by doing something different with your paging. Somewhere in the evolution of the systems the system would work on paging Out minimised programs, when this began to happen it was strange (to me) and seemed stupid. Mabey paging the program (parts and pieces) out when minimised has something to do with the problem?
@Psycogeek Sorry, but I didn't quite get you.
@JourneymanGeek That's a summary of how to deploy RemoteApps.
@JourneymanGeek It also works on Windows 8 Enterprise, Windows Vista/7 Enterprise/Ultimate (and Windows XP Professional with an update)
@gparyani Different Windows OSes paged different when a program was minimised. It also did it when it was totally unnessisary. Paged = sent stuff to virtual memory on disk to free up real virtual memory.
@gparyani Because i dont do VMs (ever), i wouldnt know what to tell you, and completly shutting off paging will have other things failing. But one possible attempt at testing would be to set the system with No paging to disk at all, and see if it reacted different.
05:52
@gparyani The idea of changing how the "memory" (general) is with the older system , is also something i learned (the hard way) when trying to keep older systems. Win 98 for example could easily run on a new system, if you could reduce the percived memory in the hardware. otherwise it would fail miserably. With barely enough knowlege to survive , and some help from a real programmer, I got win98 and win95 booting and working on a modern system.
His program "eatmem" applied in the config.sys would set memory off to the side as if it was a driver (i think) and the system only saw so much, and then it went from failing terribly to working like it did before, but on way faster hardware, making it very very fast.
@JourneymanGeek ok :)
For a while i was using the less featured win98se on new hardware, and realising (again) that they blew all the memory and the cpu out with all thier stupid new features :-) None of which were really nessisary to "work" or even play.
That is where i get the opinion that it doesnt matter how fast they make the Hardware systems, the programming will get big and sloppy, it will be loaded with features and cuteness, It will be more and more disconnected from that hardware, and relativly speaking we will have the same computer we had before.

Q: serial communications and on/off voltages

JohnMerlinoI'm writing a program in C to talk to a modem via an rs-232 serial port. Unix supports 6 pinouts in the serial line, including TXD (Transmitted Data), RXD (Received Data), DCD (Data Carrier Detect), DTR (Data Terminal Ready), CTS (Clear To Send), and RTS (Request to Send). Now according to the be...

@gparyani: feels somewhat like over kill to me. Not saying remoteapp may not be the right option, but a ssh server, even with accompanying is a lot smaller than a full blown windows install
06:16
@JohnMerlino There are many different types of transisters, some of which switch to thier "on" position when a negative voltage is applied to the gate (relative to ground) . i belive that more mosfets (sort of a transister) and transisters applied in electronics are negative to go on. Then of course there is ones built another way that a postivie flow to the gate would allow flow through the thing.
@JohnMerlino So if they were making up this sytem of switching transister things, to move data , it could have been designed one way or another. and they picked a way ??? (i am not an EE so that is all i get).
@JohnMerlino There is a differerent explaining of it than the site you listed at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/RS-232 in the voltages section, that may (or may not) also be helpfull.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek 'course, most transistors operate at about 3V (3.3V?), and 12V would fry them :P
@JohnMerlino All this stuff , all over the computer are based on Tubes :-) err transisters, sooo this link too. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transistors Which i am again not saying i understand 2% of it.
Bob
Bob
> For long distance communication (a that doesn't have to be hundreds of meters) the 5 V UART is not very reliable, that's why it's converted to a higher voltage, typically +12 V for a "0" and -12 V for a "1". The data format remains the same. Then you have RS-232 (which you actually should call EIA-232, but nobody does.)
46
A: USART, UART, RS232, USB, SPI, I2C, TTL, etc. what are all of these and how do they relate to each other?

stevenvhSerial is an umbrella word for all that is "Time Division Multiplexed", to use an expensive term. It means that the data is sent spread over time, most often one single bit after another. All the protocols you're naming are serial protocols. UART, for Universal Asynchronous Receiver Transmitte...

> RS-232 is a very simple serial protocol that was originally used for modems and teletypes. It is what is commonly called a serial port (or a COM port in MS-Windows). On the line it nominally uses ±12V levels, but they may vary widely as the detection is specified at ±3V. There is always a line driver (nowadays usually from the MAX232 family) that converts these levels to and from the internal digital signal levels of a computer or microcontroller.
> With respect to the internal levels the levels on the RS-232 line are inverted, +12V corresponds to logical low and -12V corresponds to logical high, which can be confusing.
Heh.
The answer to that is probably historical.
@Bob totally depends, they got all that. and many of them will handle a lot more "voltage" at the gates, just not at any sort of current.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek Yea, but higher voltage normally implies higher current, unless you have a current-limited source.
Most basic signal transistors and micros wouldn't be too happy with receiving 12V, anyway.
06:30
@Bob most of those things built way back when you could beat the heck out of them :-) they had all the leeway and overbuilding and all that good stuff back when people were using those old 9pin serial ports, they were protected, and mostly impervious. Now we have much better designs that break at the drop of a hat. Err i mean waste less power and are cheaper to build.
Bob
Bob
o.O
@Psycogeek At the same time, they were pretty big :P
You aren't gonna fit the power of a smartphone in half a room with a lot of the older stuff.
Also, if you go back far enough to thermionic valves, those things were hardly the most reliable..
@Bob yea about 1/2 a room, and a kilowatt to run it, but it will still be working after the zombie apocalypse , the phones ? the major phone companies areound here are now saying you can toss yours in a month (so you dont feel contract obligaged)
06:55
@allquixotic - How are you enjoying PoE?
07:40
what are all the things your mobile device is? I am wondering if i am missing a new (store app) in the possibilities. It cant unclog the toilet , but with accelerometers it can be a "level" , with magnetrometers it can do some minor metal detect and EM feild detect. With the light and screen it can be used as a backup flashlight.
Ya got the navigation (gps) and compass stuff. Everything that could connect to the web , the normal document making and reading, from text to spreadsheets. In the AV ya got camera and audio recorder, video and music playback.
