Bob
@PatoSáinz I just found the update

1 hour later…
01:05
!!info
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic did he die?
gah. anyone know anything about SAML?
@Bob yes, but i had a runaway opensimulator chewing through "896%" CPU which i killed
could've been the cause
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic :S
You have, what, 8 logical cores?
Or was it 12?
hm
I'm now wondering if we can build some redundancy into Cavil :D
01:17
@Bob 8
Bob
Bob
a mirror on another server that can somehow check the status of the primary version... and aut-activates if the primary goes down? :D
!!tell 13432342 no
overcomplicating
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic but fun!
@JourneymanGeek finally picked up the FPs! :D

is this seriously and geninuosly a super user's desktop?

why is 4chan's /g/ full of sociofuckingpaths
Bob
Bob
@PatoSáinz Please don't hotlink to 4chan
Doesn't work, and I really don't need that in my request log at work.

@Bob ohh fuck right corporate proxies

i cannot delete the pic
01:36
@Bob: awesome ;p
Bob
Bob
Rehosting images doesn't get any easier than what SE chat lets you do
and no mods around, aww ;p
Anonymous
@Bob sorry for any inconveniences
@PatoSáinz: almost certainly, nice weapon, and the guns are pretty gangsta too.
also proper mousepad
Bob
Bob
@PatoSáinz SHould be fine; it wasn't actually blocked - the hotlink just failed normally
(I just wanna avoid it just in case)

01:37
@JourneymanGeek since when gangsta mean neat laser-reflex silencers
@PatoSáinz: fine.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Looks sleek :P
Pretty tacticool.
Bob
Bob
Can't wait to get home and try it
the converter is weird
squeezy thing
don't want to use the cartridges yet
thats oldskool
the cheapie heros (which are a knockoff of old parkers) use em too.
and damn, I need to ask mom if those are still available ;p
Anonymous
01:39
are you both guys gun enthusiasts?
naw, we're talking about pens ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Heh, problem is, I can't store any spares
Bob
Bob
an accidental squeeze and an ink mess
Bob
Bob
01:41
the piston converters are easy to store
That was my very first experience with FPs ;p
did not go well.
Bob
Bob
xD
I have no idea how to use this
I used to consider them leaky pieces of crap until the vpen.
Bob
Bob
I should probably wear gloves and lay out a sheet of plastic before trying
(and lets admit it, the vpens are about as basic as you get)
Bob
Bob
01:43
@JourneymanGeek Now I suddenly doubt if it'll be any better than the smiggle
Perhaps I should leave it at home safely on the desk and put the Safari in my pocket instead :P
Oh, did you ever get around to testing it?
Also, as far as basic... vpens are surprisingly expensive
huh, they were by pilot weren't they?
so are the 78Gs o.O
@Bob: not yet. Been busy with school admin stuff, and network setup and testing
@Bob: they are, and I paid 2.50 for them. Not too bad IMO
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek For the vpens?
$6-$7 here :\
Bob
Bob
a cheap fpen from china is a tad under $3
no idea how it performs (hasn't arrived yet)
02:12
@Bob wow, DediDirect gave me another 8 GB of RAM for free, no catch
Dual QuadCore L5420
24GB DDR2 Memory
500GB SATAII HDD
10TB Premium BW
1000Mbps Port
$35/mo
Bob
Bob
02:35
@allquixotic o.O
did you ask them, or did they just chuck it in on the order page?
I remember mine was a free upgrade from 8 GB to 48 GB (where a lesser amount cost more :S)
wait, was it 24 or 48? I forgot blah
@allquixotic could you log into phoebe and check how much RAM it has? :P
also, $35/month is ridiculously cheap for that
what happens after 10 TB? 100mbit?
@Bob they said they had some spare
@Bob dunno, but I know the guy using it will never exceed 10 TB
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic that's... rather amusing
"here, have some more RAM"
@Bob well, they colocate, and it must be really hard to sell servers with only 8 GB of RAM with so much competition for higher amounts, so an 8 GB stick laying around is kind of a waste
besides, DDR2 is super cheap
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic I had the impression of the opposite
this has eight physical cores, Core2-era, no hyperthreading, lots of RAM, and a completely unexciting hard drive -- it's basically a better-CPU and better-mobo (and larger L3 cache!) variant of a high-end desktop gaming build from ~2009, minus GPU
Bob
Bob
02:46
@allquixotic Core2?
@Bob yeah, L5420 is Core2
no virtualization, so whatever
ugh... my work email inbox is being destroyed by reply-all orgy.
4
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic huh, I thought it was neh
@Bob it doesn't have EPT, so no
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank someone star this (I'm on mobile sitE)
02:47
45nm lithography and 12 MB of cache though which is nice
Bob
Bob
Ah, L5520 is the Nehalem-EP one (Gainestown)
also noteworthy
the first gen Core2 was 65 nm
this is Core2 die shrunk
Bob
Bob
DDR3 too, which is great
yeah but you're paying more than $35/mo
this is more of a budget op
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic you can get L5520s at $50/month, a little cheaper if you pay some setup
so it's not that far off
but, yea, this is already pretty good
Mine's L5639, which is the "doesn't exist" Nehalem die shrink
02:51
lol
the Nehalem die shrink was somewhat of a ugly redheaded stepchild -- there was basically ZERO marketing around it -- thing is, Intel was huge about selling the public on Sandy Bridge (and boy did they; look at all the commodity hw that went out as Sandy!) and they knew that the die shrink wasn't going to bail out Nehalem
I remember around that time noticing that Intel was eerily silent about new product announcements for an uncomfortably long time
and then bam, they started hitting their cadence, and it's been Sandy, Ivy, Haswell since
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic ark.intel.com doesn't even list it
which is just plain ridiculous
you know what I think happened is Sandy got delayed longer than they had wished
Ivy mobile got delayed a good bit too
yup
actually, quite a few things get delayed
but I suspect thats intel 1) wanting to get it right 2) not being in particular rush.
Bob
Bob
02:56
@JourneymanGeek Well, they have basically zero competition
@Bob: other than their own, older systems really
Bob
Bob
I remember some people discussing how Bulldozer was going to blow SDB out of the water, and to hold off on SDB purchases.
That failed miserably.
I'm pretty sure the Cougar Point (Sandy motherboard SATA controller) fail got them into a much more risk-averse mood than they were prior
the number 3 x86 vendor is pretty much gone (might be totally gone), and the number 2 is kinda eh.
a mass product recall sobers one to risks
02:57
yeah
Bob
Bob
Is an AMD CPU even good for anything now?
@Bob the only thing from AMD that's blowing anyone out of the water is their value proposition on the discrete GPUs
@Bob gaming on low detail on x86_64 Windows on an absolutely tight budget, I'd take an APU with a GCN part inside
GCN >>>> Haswell graphics
if you can afford a dGPU though, you'd get an Intel CPU
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic Unless you never do anything but gaming, I'd rather the more powerful CPU
(and possibly a Radeon)
Bob
Bob
Iris, and Iris Pro, are more than good enough for low detail gaming
02:59
well, Iris Pro is mobile only
Bob
Bob
Pity.
the HD4xxx Haswell graphics are basically minuscule iterations on top of Ivy graphics -_-

@allquixotic: some of the NUCs have IRIS pro I believe
which makes em pretty interesting
(Also, I am tempted to post that everytime we have a spamvert post)
potentially.

until its blown up
hmm
forget to maintain a important system. Wait for people to fight over it. Go in and beat the crap out of both weakened sides. ;p

new box is here
he said he'd give me a discount on any new servers I want built, but didn't tell me how much. hmm.
I might mail him just FYI'ing him on how much I'm tossing at Hetzner and see if I can't get a matching offer in the US
he seems to be willing to go into true budget prices, after all (from what I can tell)
hm
blah, pondering picking up the moto G still ;p
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic heh. is dedidirect good/established?
@JourneymanGeek costs too much to be worth it for me :\
I'd rather a Nexus
@Bob: I'm pretty happy with my tab 2
03:21
@Bob apparently they are around 5 years old
a lot of activity on WHT
@Bob: about 300 dollars retail. I may need to get my sim card chopped down/changed.
@JourneymanGeek I'm very puzzled that Motorola didn't decide to go with the proprietary X8 Computing System they invested so much money into for the Verizon Droid Ultra line, which is superior to the Qualcomm 400 SoC in the Moto G
they could have just as easily slapped an X8 into the Moto G and probably fit within the size/power constraints just fine, since it also runs in the Droid Mini
actually it looks fine even with that Qualcomm 400
fine, not fantastic, but it's hard to find fantastic outside of CDMA land
lol
@allquixotic: I've only had my HTC One V for little over a year tho
lol
@allquixotic: I believe the local varient might be dual sim card too
and meh, CDMA...
GSM is just a more sensible cellular tech in every way ;p
03:28
@Bob Vee Tran, owner of dedidirect, also seems to have secured Venture Capital funding O.o
from "newedge"
definitely a cut above Joe's Servers -- serving tens of customers devotedly since December 2013!
lol
eh. maybe not.
I apparently don't have enough money in my 'floating' account for next month's allowance.
easily fixed, but dad's not around
unrelatedly

Q: BitTorrent Inc role in P2P sharing

user2301394I have a question in my mind. If possible please clear my doubt. As per my understanding BitTorrent is a protocol used for P2P sharing. It require client application to transfer the data. My question is What does BitTorrent Inc do? Are they monitoring all these transmission. If i have a torren...

@Bob Does that cat have three values, like a boolean? Yes/no/null ? (source)
Bob
Bob
well, maybe
gah, depends which language you ask in :P
06:32
I am doing it in Sofon.
I was examining a motion sensor on the wall... they might need a new one now :/
But is mainly seems to come down to
1) Unitialised (sometimes true, sometimes false)
2) True
3) False
I guess 1) counts as 'Maybe"
Bob
Bob
06:49
@Hennes Again, depends on the language :P
C# guarantees a normal Boolean as true or false and a nullable Boolean? as true, false or null
JS, surprisingly, only allows true/false for actual booleans (though you can really assign anything to the var)
C has well-defined true/false states, though I suppose you do get a kind of "unknown" if you fail to initialise it - unknown until you read it
An actual third state "maybe" is different from an unknown state.
new phone acquired ;p
so I may bug you guys at some point about unlocking rooting and rom-replacing a HTC one V
07:17
first impressions, its fast, the camera is really good
and I'm waiting for godot updates so I can start installing stuff
oh, and its the dual sim card version here

@JourneymanGeek A moto g?
@JourneymanGeek The camera is actually rather poor
uk.reuters.com/article/2014/01/28/… Royal Quarentine Cruise , the zombie apocalypse begins now.
Over 600 passengers, crew fall ill on cruise. A highly contagious virus spread from an infected person, contaminated food or water, or by bites from infected :-)
08:38
@Bob: first impressions. It does seem to be doing some HDR trickery
I have some photos taken on the HTC and the Moto of the same subject and roughly the same time on the default settings
maybe its the screen ;p
and the problem seems to be with the camera app's ability to focus on tap
which an update will fix
Bob
Bob
09:05
@JourneymanGeek I detest camera autofocus
mostly because mine will go so close then snap back to ultra-blurry
and I can't turn off the AF
ugh
picked up the parcel today
guess what I got when I got home?

heck, I think the smiggle might flow a little better

@Bob: thats the big annoyance
10:09
hmm
motorola migrate is pretty cool
hm. I also need to dig up a non working sim card for the HTC
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek wait, why does it need a sim card?
I have a literal stack of old sim cards :P
@Bob: naturally because it crashes without one randomly
i have a bunch, just need to go pull one out another old phone ;p
there we are, my one V now has a old, expired o2 UK prepaid sim card ;p
10:51
hello guys
11:04
@JourneymanGeek and is it now crashing less?
11:20
Ah! saw this for the first time
@JourneymanGeek I'm shamelessly stealing it for unattributted use.

Sometime after tiffin time, some time before dinner time, or maybe supper time.

bleh, unlocking a HTC one has annoyingly wrong instructions
Bob

12:14
@JourneymanGeek unlocking bootloader or just rooting?
@NoobDoob you could just try the question
I highly doubt anyone here 'specialises' in those, but we tend to grab a large stick and beat problems until they disappear
12:34
@Bob: unlocking bootloader
its SUPPOSED to spit out a code, but its sitting on waiting for device
12:46
oh sweet, phone isn't detected at all
its detected on the other system, should be trivial to fix
13:23
unlocked, whoot
now what? ;p

@JourneymanGeek Test each and every anti-theft solution on the market, write an extensive report and send it to me :P
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I never bothered with custom ROMs. I just rooted it.
@ThatBrazilianGuy Many of them permanently brick the device...
@Bob: the stock rom was horrific at times.
Bob
Bob
13:27
@ThatBrazilianGuy Well, anti-theft
if someone steals your phone, would you rather give them a wiped clean phone they can use or a paperweight?
I'd rather have it report its coordinates to me so I can give armed thugs the police their location.
@ThatBrazilianGuy: thats built in these days
prey is pretty nice. It thinks my phone is stolen ;p
@JourneymanGeek Well, yes, it is, by the Google Framework or whatnot. But far from optimal. It won't try to connect to the nearest wifi, or auto-activate 3G, if it enters "stolen mode". It won't warn you if a new SIM card is inserted. Prey says it survives a factory reset, but I haven't tested it. A friend stats Cerberus can survive ROM flashing (!!!), but I haven't tested it (duh!)
@ThatBrazilianGuy: prey!
does all that
Promises to... But my experience with it was not good
I forgot it at my desk at work... Had to send it an "activation SMS".
The device had both wifi and 3g disabled... And disabled it stayed.
13:32
and blah
You can't remove devices from google play
I think you can, from the web interface, IIRC.
(a thief wouldn't do that, they'd just reset to factory defaults)
nope, you can hide it, but not remove
Let me check
damn slow network, I bet it runs on IPoAC
!!wiki IPoAC
In computer networking, IP over Avian Carriers (IPoAC) is a humorously-intended proposal to carry Internet Protocol (IP) traffic by birds such as homing pigeons. IP over Avian Carriers was initially described in RFC 1149, a Request for Comments (RFC) issued by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) written by D. Waitzman and released on April 1, 1990. It is one of several April Fools' Day RFCs. Waitzman described an improvement of his protocol in RFC 2549, IP over Avian Carriers with Quality of Service (1 April 1999). Later, in RFC 6214 released on 1 April 2011, and 13 years after th...
