This morning I was greeted with 6 BSODs caused by ATI's shitty QA on their drivers
Bob
Bob
Drivers are usually insatlled in system folders. It's far better to go through uninstall+reboot cycles rather than trying a manual purge.
And there are good driver purge programs.
Manual purges are inaccurate, messy, and can introduce far more problems.
Anonymous
I found out that it was just resolved by updating from their "october" release to their "december" release
Anonymous
I want ot murder everyone who was involved in QA testing ATI drivers.
Any recommendations on purging programs?

00:01
@CCInc I used one at some point, but I can't remember the name right now :\
Ah, okay
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic might know? (driver cleanup tool, for AMD's graphics)
The newest drivers are not the best for mining.. should I just not try the old ones?
Odd thing is
I don't know if it's actually a driver issue
it seems to work when I uninstall the sdk
Bob
Bob
I don't really do mining. Or AMD. So... I dunno :P
lol alright
Bob
Bob
00:04
As for 'better for mining', perhaps they'll know more over at Bitcoin (though check their help to make sure it's not off-topic...)
AMD's drivers are notoriously bad
Bob
Bob
Reddit's /r/bitcoin is also a decent place to ask, probably.
and heh, they did fire a lot of Q&A guys, one of the SU regulars used to work for them
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Huh, who was that?
@JourneymanGeek Kind of hit or miss, I guess? :/
00:06
@Bob: Ben Richards
Bob

He did? O.O

(though that was mostly aimed at their Linux drivers)
@PatoSáinz You're the second person to have said that.. why?

@CCInc I thought that was optimised for CPU-mining?

@CCInc because yes
Really? I'll check the spec page

A: Is it possible to upgrade a Mac Powerbook G4 laptop's hard drive to SSD?

LeTI have just installed a SATA SSD in my 2005 PowerBook G4 17" 1.67GHz running 10.5 Leopard. It is not straightforward swap because you need an adapter which will not fit in the drive bay with a conventional 2.5" laptop drive. mSATA SSdrives are now available and they are tiny. BUT they have a diff...

I really want pictures of that craziness.

Seriously... You press F12, then when it says "Press F12 to boot..." You press it again.

@MichaelHampton oh hai
Hi Michael =p
Anonymous
@MichaelHampton i don't know but judging by his website "http://synetech.dyndns.org/" which redirects to synetech.freehostia.com i can see he is very technical
This is not the first time he's been completely 100% wrong and an utter jerk about it in comments to one of my posts.
he's been around a while, he probably just misread the question (or it was edited)

04:02
@ekaj that guy is angry at you too apparently
Apparently I need to post more pictures.
04:19
I'm going to fall asleep waiting for his downvote...
@MichaelHampton - heh... That exchange was amusing.
I would be very suprised if Windows didn't fall back onto some generic network driver as well.
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank Tried that... so very very lost :P
@Bob - I know the feeling. It's especially hard if you can't get any stone quickly, as it prevents you from building any of the workshops
@MichaelFrank For wireless, not as likely. But for wired, it generally includes a workable driver for virtually anything that might be in a desktop computer. Thus "Option 1".
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank Ya. I had (and have) no idea where the stone was. Gave up after half an hour of muddling around trying to dig down.
04:27
@Bob - Dig > Ramps Down
If you start digging holes your Gnomes get stuck. :P
Bob
Bob
@MichaelFrank Got stuck anyway.
Went down like 8 levels before giving up.
And no stone? o.O
Bob
Bob
Nawp :S
@MichaelHampton - Actually... I believe Windows didn't have a driver for my Lenovo desktop when I reinstalled Win7 a couple months ago, I had to manually install it using a USB partway through the install. It's quite possible he's in the same situation.
@MichaelFrank Oh yes, it's possible. That's why I didn't stop there :)
04:30
Just imagine, all of this could have been avoided if he had supplied the model of the computer in his question! ^_^
Bleh the latest version of spotify isn't working :/
@MichaelFrank Eh..maybe I should have just closed it as "Google it"?
Anonymous
@Gowtham bleh spotify
HAHA, and he accepted my answer.
Perhaps... I think it's possible Synetech took exception to your picture only Option 1. A short ifelse explanation that Windows should have installed a generic driver and if it hadn't then else option 2. etc. might have worked.
04:34
@PatoSáinz :P
@MichaelFrank Possibly. Though I think it's more likely that he's just a first-class jerk.
@Bob yeah, it cost me a few bucks less to use comgateway ;p
Everytime I start Windows media Player a rogue svchost eats up my CPU :/
@Gowtham - that must be getting expensive...
whut?
Thanks for all your help. I didn't realise the official drivers site wasn't actually Acer. However, I found the network drivers for the computer on Acers site and did the USB swap and it's now (almost) all working. — John Judd 8 mins ago

04:41
@JourneymanGeek It was migrated from SF
Bob

@JourneymanGeek Probably about the same or worse for me :P

@JourneymanGeek
lol
not off hand, but those look like standard USB pin outs
Bob
Bob
@Ash get a new one
not worth the trouble of fixing
actually, yeah
^^^^ that ;p
Bob
Bob
If you really wanted to fix it, pinouts are on Wiki and I'd recommend you trace (with a continuity/resistance meter) to the other connector, because the D+ and D- are finicky and the colour code isn't necessarily reliable
but a repaired connector likely won't be as strong or reliable as before
and you should be able to buy one for under $5 anyway.
@Bob: at this point, I've come to a conclusion faulty cables are simply never worth fixing
Bob
Bob
05:28
these are the possible colour codes:
> Pin Number Cable Colour Function
1 Red VBUS (5 volts)
2 White D-
3 Green D+
4 Black Ground
but it won't always be like that
@JourneymanGeek I've hacked/DIY'd USB for power only a few times
it's remarkably easy to mix up the pins
and that isn't even considering data
Ash
Ash
@bob thanks.I will just try to fix it.fortunately , I also have a DMM lying around.If this doesn't work I will surely buy a new one.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ethernet might be worth fixing, if only because the connectors are pretty much designed to be interchangeable
@Ash you risk damaging the devices on either end of the cable
@Bob: ethernet cables tend to... accumilate
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I need more than I can find :P
@Bob: at the moment I have one more than I'm using on hand ;p
I have more in my box I think
ahh found another 4 wire ethernet cable

$318 retail? that sucks...
if it costs that much, I might as well spring for a Nexus
O.O
it's supposed to be already here?
...
did not notice
then again, the local telechoice stores all closed :\
two of them in local shopping centres last year
zero now :(
@Bob: converted its not much more than the US price I think
" If you take into account the U.S pricing for the 8GB model (US$179), you are paying an additional S$28 (currency rates at time of publication) for the one-year warranty"
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek 179 USD is 228 SGD
that's almost 100 SGD more
hmm.
Slightly less tempted
Bob
Bob
lol
they're planning 279 AUD here
(I don't need another phone at the moment, so... meh, its probably a geek toy more than anything else)
Bob
Bob
06:36
179 USD is about 205 AUD
sooo... again about 75 AUD more
@Bob: google's stuff is a LOT cheaper in the us :/
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek They do have a bit of an excuse in this case, physical product and import duties.
yup
and taxes
Bob
Bob
But after the software pricing debacle, I honestly don't give a shit now. I won't accept import duties as an excuse for anything. Because honestly it pisses me off.
@JourneymanGeek $99 price for first 50 customers - where everyone will step on each other's heads to get their hands on this smarty.
06:37
but of course, you never pay retail if you can avoid it
@sparkubullet: yeah, and its today, and I just noticed XD
Bob
Bob
We don't have any taxes on overseas software sales. So what do Adobe and MS do? Oooh, let's charge them 2x as much because "the market can afford it"!
@Bob: ... tho, this is the dual sim version
@JourneymanGeek saw Black Friday rush? brace yourself!
@sparkubullet: naw, as I said, out of the way, I'll likely end up buying it in a store
assuming I get it
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I personally think I'll avoid it at this rate
it's about time for the next gen to be released
wait 4-5 months => save a bunch :P
06:41
@Bob: I'm almost never an early adopter ;p
superuser.com/q/701522/10165 can't tell if this is a real question or spam :/
this one too superuser.com/a/702384/10165 . It smells off.
@JourneymanGeek iphone die hard fans are always early adopters. those that survive standing 24 hours in queue at launch.
@sparkubullet: a phone's a tool to me, not much else.
(so is most of my gear, they're the nicest tools I can afford, but they're tools, not my religion ;p)
@JourneymanGeek what is it to everybody else?
@sparkubullet: a ball and chain in a lot of cases ;p
or blinkers
i use apps besides calling. useful apps are there that i cannot resist urge to install. for example public transportation time tables, public transport locator and time estimator until next bus reaches bus stop etc.
06:47
oh, I run most of those on my tablet
my phone's mostly a phone/hostspot
@JourneymanGeek you drag tablet along with you everywhere? then it must have GPS because mine does not which is where phone comes to do its job.
@sparkubullet: it has gps
only problem is google maps needs a network to do navigation
so its useless in a lot of situations without a phone ;p
I have an alternate navigation software but its as easy to use, and I'm not familiar with it.
@JourneymanGeek Navigation maybe, pulling data for information too but you can use app without internet connection if you download certain area to your storage.
@sparkubullet: that requires planning
you can also use Labs ruler and measure manually distance.
@JourneymanGeek not such big deal. don't be lazy American.
lets say I'm in a town in say, india, and holiday, and I'm lost, and I don't have cellphone coverage ;p
besides, I'm talking about a tool falling short
and having another tool thats less good but functional
@JourneymanGeek in this case find free public hotspot or visit internet cafe. if it fails ask for a bit of wi-fi from someone.
I think you're missing the point I am trying to make
@JourneymanGeek downloading area to offline is not the option for you?
07:01
not always, and as I said, it would be a situation where I got to plan ahead
@JourneymanGeek not much to plan ahead when downloading parts of city to offline storage.
Harry Potter - puberty done right
city isn't an issue, I have 3g and lots of data
its other countries ;p
07:16
@JourneymanGeek you can download city map data of other countries as well before you know you will be travelling there. Then you will have to use roaming for 3g and data for navigation.
roaming is expensive
@JourneymanGeek in this case internet cafe is less.
and as I said, I had an alternate map program to cover for it
@JourneymanGeek what is this program called?
navit
its not bad, I'm just not used to it. Uses OSM maps
07:19
@JourneymanGeek Open street maps?
@JourneymanGeek Why is it not on Google Play?
The latest version of Google Maps sucks
No offline maps
@JourneymanGeek Then why they offer off-market versions here? navit-project.org/?page=download
07:22
And Ok google saves just one layer
because not everyone wants to use google play? They can offer newer versions without waiting for approval?
Stupid fucking google
@HackToHell: I like the maps themslves
the problem is really the edge cases
like the last trip where my parents drove to a town they're unfamiliar with without checking the hotel name, or the location of the place we were visiting
@HackToHell why so much hate?
@JourneymanGeek there are ARMv4, ARMv5 and ARMv5TE versions but I have ARMv9 tablet.
@sparkubullet: why not install the store version first?
that way you can see if it works for you
and thats the version I run ;p
07:26
@sparkubullet They have been changing too much stuff lately :P
Bob
Bob
@sparkubullet Google Maps has always sucked for offline use
You can try to download an area, but then it magically wipes itself at some point and when you need it it's gone.
Which is stupid. And totally useless.
yup
google maps is awesome under perfect conditions
@Bob probably has to do with their TOS
what are good alternatives to Google maps?
Bob
Bob
@sparkubullet Nokia Maps.
I first used it on the N8
Now I keep a 520 specifically for maps
it's perfect
nice fast accurate GPS
fully offline maps
the offline search works (though isn't so great on the Lumia, it was better on Symbian^3)
online is still better for searching, but not needed if you have the street address or it's a big landmark
I've had no end of problems with Google Maps
the compass has been buggy since some update over a year ago
@Bob Nokia maps are not for Android.
Bob
Bob
07:38
for walking navigation it'll take whatever direction you start in as north, and use the magnetometer
Bob
Bob
you can make north = south -_-
@sparkubullet That's Android's problem.
@HackToHell The web one isn't as great, but it works.
Best part is, they actually listen to feedback
Google's a bloody black hole
(as @OliverSalzburg can confirm...)
the compass problem? widely reported for years now, not even an official response let alone a bugfix
the 'offline' maps? it's just plain broken
Googe's services make too many assumptions of continuous unlimited connectivity too
@Bob do you use a lot of apps from Nokia market?
just a few
Bob
Bob
@sparkubullet I don't use that phone that much, but i do have a few from there.
07:45
How is Nokia and Windows market compared to Android's in terms of frequency of updates, updates that cause more damage than good and overall quality of app marketplace?
I think WIndows phone app store is decently good. I would rate it higher than Google Play store.
@jokerdino You have a windows phone ?
My sister does. She owns a Lumia 720 I think.
@Bob: my current phone dosen't have a compass ;p
Bob
Bob
@sparkubullet Haven't had an update blow anything up yet.
Frequency? Well, everything I have works well enough to not need updates...
Quality? Hm. Depends what you need.
Suits my needs, but there are still a few things missing. Mostly browsers, in my case.
