brilliant
@allquixotic: I do need to carry the system with me for college

my laptop is as simple and light as possible, but I don't even try to game on it
@SteamGames Crysis Warhead third-party DRM information is incorrect: 50 activations, not 5 http://www.crysis.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46212 http://store.steampowered.com/app/17330/
Don't know why the product page wasn't page since Crytek announced that the activation limit was increased
00:35
I think the second page is updated.
50 is kinda silly--there must be a technical reason they haven't removed SecuROM altogether, it isn't necessary
> 3rd-party DRM: SecuROMâ„¢
> 5 machine activation limit
technical? no
probably some non technical higher up seems to think DRM has a purpose other than pissing off people who actually bought your product
> Crysis 1 & Warhead activation limit increased
> I'm pleased to announce that with the recent revealing of Crysis 3, and lots of people deciding to dust off their old Crysis 1 disks, we have increased the activation limit on Crysis 1 and Warhead from 5 to 50!
> [...] Hey all, just a bump to let you know that this is now also the case for Warhead.
ugh
most of these people spell badly :/
Correction: ...why the product page wasn't updated since Crytek...
01:06
8% into the Crysis 1 download. It's going to be run on the HP laptop solely for benchmarking purposes. Even though some people hate the notion of any DRM at all, running out of activations for this game is utterly unrealistic, so I don't consider it an issue...
01:17
Whoops, tweeted to an inactive account. Corrected tweet:

Mine is decently powerful, but I have a desktop as the main worker.
o.O
I just came across a ThinkPad.
An R52.

@DragonLord But there is an issue.
What if the activation servers go down?
I think I got crysis (1) somewhere. Never liked it, it was not properly turn based. ;)

@Bob My gut feeling is that Crytek/EA will eventually remove SecuROM from the games in a final patch, given that Crysis 2 Maximum Edition on Steam has no third-party DRM.
Crysis is too big a game for EA to ignore should they take the activation servers offline.
It may be old, but it's still valuable to many players, and there would be massive outrage if the DRM isn't patched out if and when this happens.

@Hennes You like this?
@Psycogeek Apparently glue gun did not exceed my expectations, let alone reached them. ;(
@Boris_yo now you ready for the epoxy :-)
15:08
@Psycogeek See?
Maybe glue sticks okay to plastic but I have this white rubber that sits on top of bottom plastic where you supposed to put your laptop on.
@Boris_yo yup. did you let it get really hot first? than like all glue you gotta make a surface it can grab on to. The cool thing about hotglue is you can remove it easily (usualy)
@Boris_yo silocoln or vinyl style? nothing sticks to silicon :-) and vinyl is tough to get to stick any way at all too.
@Psycogeek I don't know but suspect it to be silicon. What can be done? Epoxy? I have Israeli multi-purpose glue... Maybe I need to get cheap epoxy from dollar stores nearby? I don't have JB WELD currently.

This is what happens when you leave a vicious Rottweiler alone with two kittens:
@Boris_yo if possible get down to and into what actually was intending to hold it together, and what "broke" if possible have the repair be there. because it could be intenal and therfore not look so bad on the outside. otherwise toss some gaffers tape on and replace it each year.
@Psycogeek There is tubes inside that bind both parts together but I cannot locate screws on the outside. If I take both parts apart, I am affraid it will only compound problem.

@Boris_yo it may very well compond the problem. Saw one laptop somone got fed up with the plastic and put metal hinges on it :-) a few screws and nuts and thatll hold it :-)
What would I do with you?

what does "duo" even mean in that case? dual core NAND?
two sticks in one stick?
or is it "duo" the standard of a whopping 512 MB?

is anyone online?
can anyone help me with a Windows 7 BSOD problem, even in safe mode? I tried restore via recovery disc. It says it cant restore the registry.
18:54
@JABFreeware Usually you take memorydump file and upload it to forum where someone could analyze it and point closer to culprit.

@JABFreeware try making a question formally at superuser.com, because the chat is going to be quite empty for this week
@PatoSáinz thanks
but my real question was, cant I just edit the registry
I have an installation along side the corrupt one
I was going to edit the startup part of the registry
it all happened when I ran xbootmgr, which is a boot time analyzer
the bootlog shows that it crashes right after loading the avast antivirus driver

Can anyone recommend a program for Windows to record the audio that's being played?

Isn't that for video?

Q: Native audio capture for Windows 7

RandomEngyThe traditional way to capture audio is to pick a "Stereo Mix" or "What U Hear" recording device and record in a program like Sound Recorder or Audacity. However that relies on your sound card exposing that feature. In Vista they introduced an API to capture your PC's sound output independent of...

9
Q: How can I record the sound output from programs in windows 7?

reconbotI would like to record the sound output from specific programs in windows 7. On osx I'm aware of programs called audiohijack and soundflower. I'd like to find something similar.

Ah. Audacity, of course.
Although that's sort of overkill for the person I need this for.
There's a native sound recorder in vista an 7.
But IIRC you have to select the "mixer" sound source for it to capture system audio
19:28
Does it save to compressed formats as well?
Otherwise it will try to record mic in, but I think audacity behaves the same
Saves to .wma in Win7
That should suffice!
I'll give it a shot
In general, in Windows if you want to capture system audio you have to select the "mixer" sound source or equivalent (there might be exceptions depending on the driver or the recording software).
@PatoSáinz From SSD to HDD through USB 2.0 is 27-30 MB/s
Ok. In Windows 8, how do I open the sound recorder?
Where the fuck did they put the Start button?

19:32
@slhck Maybe you need to disable metro?
Found it. You can type it on the… app screen thingy.
Seems this laptop doesn't have a "mixer" option to record from. Just the microphone.
Found it. You can right click the list of devices and activate it.
What the hell, this is the worst UX I've ever seen.
@slhck for the loopback device, that's hardware-dependent, and the driver is what determines whether to show the loopback device or not
you're lucky it's there at all
for years it was "buy Virtual Audio Cable" -- that was the only solution unless you bought a hardware mixer
Seems I was lucky then.
Worked for me, thanks @ThatBrazilianGuy

Anyone know a solution for this: http://superuser.com/questions/691602/laptop-usb-not-working ?
It's driving me crazy... :S
Answer on the question itself if you do. Would be appreciated...
@Loko Solution: Get a new laptop :P
@Loko it could be a dozen different things, although your mention of it going bad when you move the cable suggests it's a loose connection (the port tends to loosen up over many insertions); the only way to repair that would be to get a new motherboard in the lappy, which is almost never economical when it's so expensive to do so
@allquixotic So basically I am screwed?
@Loko try a Linux live CD (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, etc etc etc) just to be sure it's not software, especially if you've only ever tried it on Windows, but yeah, if all the suggestions in the question/answer didn't help, it's just bad hardware
USB ports can be extremely finicky if they're cheaply made, or if you drop the laptop on its side, etc
@allquixotic Never dropped it. Only got it for like 6 months now and it was pretty expensive...
21:06
what make/model?
Lenovo
is it a ThinkPad or an IdeaPad?
Ideapad
that's why :P
21:08
@Loko cheap consumer lappy
when you buy an IdeaPad, you should have absolutely no expectation of any degree of build quality. they are basically throwaway devices with very poor quality control and build quality; the #1 thing they're trying to do is take your (low) amount of money and shit out a cheap laptop.
if you didn't consider build quality heavily as a factor in your purchasing decisions, here is your non-consideration of that factor paying off
@allquixotic Aha so nice little scam...
The weird thing is other devices in my usb ports are working man :S
well, you COULD try to get it repaired under warranty, since all Lenovo products come with a 1 year warranty even if you didn't buy an extra one
I've had very mixed results with Lenovo warranty repair
if you have a local computer repair shop that is an official Lenovo partner, they may be able to do the repair free of charge by submitting a repair request to Lenovo -- and you wouldn't even have to ship the unit overseas
I once had my local shop repair a ThinkPad Tablet Slate (Android) by replacing the motherboard, under warranty, for free. good value there.
they order the parts from China, they ship (slowly, if you're not near China) to the depot, and the depot techs repair your unit
@allquixotic I have absolutely no idea if my local computer repair shop is an official Lenovo partner
@Loko well just look on their website, or look for others nearby
21:11
It was still working like a week ago. Since then I haven't dropped it whatsoever
maybe water damage?
condensation from a glass?
@allquixotic Have not drink in the presence of the laptop
have not been drinking*
I feel so fucked man
I can still use the laptop for school and shit but of course not for gaming anymore...
the depot will determine whether it's your fault or the unit's problem... if you didn't buy any extra warranty / accidental damage protection, and they determine it's your fault, they can still repair it, but on your dime... motherboard for a laptop runs about $100 - $200 (depending on how new it is and how high-end), plus cost of labor, which will be a lot more than the cost of the motherboard
but again, if you haven't tried a Linux live CD, then there's no reason to believe it's not a software problem
@allquixotic Linux Live CD?
and like the folks in the question said, you can always get new USB ports with an expresscard
7 mins ago, by allquixotic
@Loko try a Linux live CD (Ubuntu, Fedora, OpenSUSE, etc etc etc) just to be sure it's not software, especially if you've only ever tried it on Windows, but yeah, if all the suggestions in the question/answer didn't help, it's just bad hardware

21:14
@allquixotic Assuming the machine takes expansion cards.
Most laptops don't nowadays.
Much less Ideapads, which are netbookey
@allquixotic What should I do with a linux live CD?
@Loko you download a CD/DVD image, burn it to a CD/DVD, stick it in the CD tray (or attach a USB CD/DVD drive to do it, or use a USB flash drive instead, but you'll have to use a special method to get it on a flash drive), and you use it for a while to see if the symptoms occur
I got Linux as a virtual machine atm
@Loko that's not going to help you
@allquixotic yeah ok :S
21:16
windows and its device drivers can be pretty fucked up from time to time, so if it's software, trying to attack it at the hardware level will be fruitless.... before I start going for warranty repair, I always rule out software as a potential problem
best way to rule it out is to use something completely different than your standard system, because the problem could even be with the latest USB drivers themselves, so even if you reinstalled windows from scratch and naturally installed the latest USB drivers, you could be re-downloading the same problem yet again
@allquixotic Don't really see this as a software problem. The thing with the cable of the mouse would suggest it's hardware.
@Loko but you can't reliably reproduce it
@allquixotic I am 100% fucked
well you're unwilling to try the things people have asked you to try
and you haven't even sent it in for warranty yet
so yeah, if you're just going to say "no" to anything suggested, then yes, you are 100% fucked :)
@allquixotic I will try of course the things you are saying but I have a feeling I am 100% fucked
21:42
in the future you can improve your chances of not hitting a problem like this by paying more up-front for things like accidental damage protection (ADP) aka "insurance", and better build quality, such as a ThinkPad
thanks for the help man. Really appreciate it.

Crysis runs on my old laptop, but barely so--the Nanosuit HUD is ugly without anti-aliasing, and the game gets about 40 fps on the low preset with 2xAA at 1366x768

@ThatBrazilianGuy: I'll do some testing once I get my raspi running again ;)
