@JourneymanGeek Mech keyboard is here! :D
it arrived at 6am o.O
I didn't know auspost delivered that early
and apparently they rang the doorbell, dropped it, and ran...

Instead, programmers may never demand "forking", but ask for the program to voluntarily give permission. "Forking" will henceforth be called "consenting", and it is entirely up to the program to decide if the consent stands valid, regardless of the progress of the system clock.

@allquixotic I don't much like the new UI tbh
been using Nightly at work for a while (the JS debugger is improving! :D)

i'd switch to aurora right now if i weren't that lazy
00:48
I LOOKED at nightly when the new UI first hit... I'll probably start using it as my production browser when it hits beta, because I can't stand to wait any longer than that
and it's unlikely to contain any completely broken functionality by beta time

maybe
@CanadianLuke ...non-working switches?
oih yea, get one of those ethernet testers
they'll be invaluable if something does get mixed up
You know how in Windows 8, it saves the app state when you shutdown and when you start up the computer again, it brings you back to where you were?
Why doesn't it do the same with Desktop?
Bob
Bob
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute why should it?
apps have very specific restrictions and APIs that enable this functionality
if you could live with all the restricitons, then don't use desktop
simple as that
So you don't have to save your stuff a 100 times every time you shutdown when updating.
Bob
Bob
03:06
you can't simply save the state of one program while changing the state of the OS as a whole
standby/hibernate works because it saves the state of the whole system
save a snapshot of open windows in the ram when shutting down and retrieve it when the computer is started.
Bob
Bob
apps can be 'saved' (not really) because they have specific API hooks that allow this, and restrictions that stop them from doing things that can't be saved
46 secs ago, by Bob
you can't simply save the state of one program while changing the state of the OS as a whole
a program will expect that nothing else has changed
K anything else?
Bob
Bob
you're talking about pulling the rug out under the feet of a running program
which is just plain stupid
I might be wrong, but it's a little bit too much to call me stupid for my curiosity, don't you think?
Bob
Bob
03:08
Windows does send notifications to all running programs (that have message pumps) whenever it's about to log off/shut down
it's up to them to save their own state
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute I'm not calling you stupid - don't take it personally
Anyone tried installing SteamOS ?
> Custom graphics compositor designed to provide a seamless transition between Steam, its games and the SteamOS system overlay
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute lol
Bob
Bob
Linux, et al., do kind of deal with updates while the system is running
but it's not quite the same thing
they don't force programs to load the new version of whatever updated library - they simply keep the old version loaded until the program is restarted
they certainly do not restart the system and reload the memory of running programs
03:38
Hmm DirectX SDK has a lot of tutorials really helpful ;p
04:11
AMD seems to have contributed a lot of sample code ;p
@Bob and some daemons on Linux are agile enough (due to their design / the design of the system) to not even terminate any TCP sockets or disrupt any activity while it restarts, provided there's no serious ABI break
web servers and OpenSSH are good at that usually
Bob
Bob
@allquixotic in that case, though, the host process would have to stay up, wouldn't it?
I suppose if they had a dedicated process that keeps the socket open, that could be simple enough to not need any changes
@CanadianLuke if you can, colour code them
@Gowtham: I am likely to try it
04:43
It's public education, lack of funds lol. I'll use a marker
Bob
Bob
@CanadianLuke if you aren't rerouting anything, and only swapping out switches, it might help to only swap a couple at a time
or even one at a time
maybe a bit slower, but less chance of mixing htings up
@JourneymanGeek You have a paper in DirectX ?
Alright. It's gonna be a big improvement, hopefully
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek That backlight is going to be useful :D
(ugh... I chose the camera that takes 6 MB photos... this'll take a while)
04:59
@Gowtham: steamos ;p

Q: How does SSH connection survive a network restart?

Serge - appTranslatorFrom a Linux SSH shell, type /etc/init.d/network restart to restart the network service. I expect my SSH connection to die since the network service goes down. But it doesn't. Very cool. But how does Linux achieve this? How does it keep my SSH connection alive accross the service restart?

both answers provide a distinct but correct piece of the puzzle
05:11
@JourneymanGeek It works only with nvidia for now :'(
@Gowtham: almost a pity
I have a spare hard drive and a nvidia gpu ;p
(and about a million other things I need done)
Bob
Bob
05:34
o.O
@Gowtham: I'm looking at the FAQ for steamos. Its debian based, and can't be that hard to hack in AMD driver support
They have some Custom graphics compositor
bugs ^ infinity is all I can think of
mechanical keyboard ?
"The drivers for SteamOS are provided as part of the system image and integrated by Valve. Valve will be integrating new and updated drivers over time. The process for installing new drivers should not
be different from any other distribution in that the Debian community or Valve will re-package new driver releases and re-distribute them. If an end-user wants to install a new driver package on top of their existing SteamOS installation we expect to remain largely compatible with the Debian packaging scheme."
also, it runs gnome
05:38
old one or the new ugly one ?
@Bob: I've heard of armagaddon, they're a second tier gaming hardware maker
@Gowtham: I THINK its the old one
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Second gear?
either would need X support
@Bob nice volume rocker
Bob
Bob
05:38
(this is some weird rebranded one... but it works well)
@JourneymanGeek second tier?
Bob
Bob
@Gowtham lol
it works for controlling the backlight too
@JourneymanGeek uhm. not sure I understand what that means
sorry, its hard typing with paws some days ;p
@Bob I have no idea what to call it :P so I called it a rocker ^_^
@Bob: basically, they're not one of the big boys like razer, but they tend to sell gaming centric stuff, like mechanical keyboards. Wouldn't be suprised if both kogan and armagaddon just used the same OEM
Bob
Bob
05:40
@JourneymanGeek heck, their manual mentioned the armaggeddon model number :P
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Also, USB n-key rollover :D
Bob
Bob
I didn't even think that was possible
though perhaps that's driver-dependent and would fail on something simpler
dogs can't hit more than 2 keys at once anyway.
Bob
Bob
05:43
lol
paws too short?
paws, not fingers
;p
(actually, I generally don't hit two keys at once outside gaming. Even then, I tend to stick to WASD space and mouse)
Bob
Bob
ya
@JourneymanGeek there was that one game that required both hands on keyboard
but I generally prefer the mouse
main advantage over consoles :P
the only time I've actually wanted multi-key was when trying multiplayer on one KB :P
yeah
iirc MS has a nice little tool for testing that
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek I used this: gigahype.com/nkey-rollover-test-page
Bob
Bob
05:58
which is apparently the MS one anyway! :P
also, that 'mechanical keyboards are noisy'? complete myth unless you have a model M
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek heh
it's a bit noisier than the low-profile ones
but, as i said before, my domed keyboard is pretty damn loud
oh, low profile ones are scissors
Bob

I imagine a blue is louder, though

@Bob: quite a few nice options there
I'd probably suggest a logitech
I like my roccat, and their customer support rocks
but if someone came up to me and asked me for a mouse suggestion... ;p
Bob
Bob
heh
too expensive? probably
the XTD, yeah
unless you came into a bit of money
the pure is fairly nice
Bob
Bob
08:07
@JourneymanGeek Problem is, I'm used to long, narrow mice. And two buttons on the thumb side. Those are surprisingly hard to find :\
yeah, that would be an issue
Bob

apparently its a VERY good idea to unplug my other drives while running the installer, and I need to do some prep work first.

Bob

10:45
why is it so quiet in here today
@JourneymanGeek the keyboard feels sufficiently different that my key order is actually getting messed up..

@Boris_yo: not really

arghghhgh clamshell packaging
@JourneymanGeek how does it affect usage of other keyboards?

Bob
@allquixotic HI
how's the NUC now that you have it set up?
@Bob the mSATA SSD is out for delivery today, so I don't have it set up yet
Bob
Bob
ah
sending back a 60 GB 2.5" SSD in exchange for a 32GB mSATA :/
for a router it won't matter at all, but i was hoping to be able to do something else with it... what, I don't know
@allquixotic ??
Bob
Bob
13:53
@allquixotic I have a rpi serving perfectly well as a router at the moment
I suppose it's limited mostly by the lack of GbE and USB 3.0, though
the CPU is more than powerful enough for most purposes
heck, the lack of GbE and USB 3.0 won't matter unless I try to turn it into a NAS
the switch can handle GbE in the LAN, and my WAN connection is nowhere near megabit, let along gigabit
@allquixotic Not a smart exchange...
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo uh?
...
14:19
@Bob not at all for me, but I switch keyboards a lot.
@Bob: wireless or wired?
and how many ports?
(at the moment I'm working with 3 different systems, each with its own quieks)
Bob
Bob
excellent writeup :P
@JourneymanGeek the network?
half wires, half wireless
I have a bunch of switches and APs handling the LAN
the Pi is purely for WAN routing
Bob
Bob
it does its job
14:22
so, added a usb-ethernet adaptor?
Bob
Bob
I'm pretty sure it could handle a VPN or three with no problems, either
@JourneymanGeek just IPv4 forwarding at the moment
I'm rather tempted by this dx.com/p/…
Bob
Bob
which would have serious performance impacts, but my WAN is so slow it doesn't matter
Bob
Bob
if I ever get FTTH (maybe next century), I'll consider upgrading to a USB eth dongle
14:24
(though that said, I am bloody getting ethernet throughout the apartment when I get a place of my own)
@Bob: or a real router XD
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, we have that handled
but the WAN is mostly out of our control
or in my case, two
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek the Pi is far more powerful than most "real routers"
unless you go into enterprise territory
@Bob: most real routers have a dedicated chip for routing.
Least I believe the 2wire I took apart did
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek sure you mean routing and not the switch component?
and not the WAP?
14:26
and no, not the wap.
I probably was confusing the switch component
Bob
Bob
the switch being a discrete chip wouldn't surprise me
with such high throughput and it being pretty much a dumb device
but the routing part is usually configurable, and it would make no sense to have another part just for the webserver
also, a Pi is far more flexible
I can do things on it easily that would have taken many many hours on dd-wrt
(dd-wrt is actually running on a router downstream of the Pi - the Pi is for WAN routing only, and the dd-wrt router is used to segregate the LAN)
and there's another WAN router upstream of the Pi, but I'm treating that as a dumb device - because it really is dumb, and it's impossible to find an ADSL modem/router that's powerful
and dd-wrt won't run on modems anyway
if I ever figure out how to turn a Pi into an ADSL2+ router, that one is going.
most ADSL modem routers... suck... hard
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek ya
but, again, what choice do I have?
on the other hand, I've not seen a standalone modem in ages
Bob
Bob
I'm not going to spend $500 on the off-chance that a good one even exists
14:32
come to think of it, I've heard horrid things of the cable modem-router our ISP uses either
Bob
Bob
much rather stick a Pi in and take the slight performance hit from another layer of routing
Mines modem ---> router/AP -----> 'switch/'ap'
most of the systems are connected to the router/ap and the connection between the two aps is over power line networking
Bob
Bob
lol
mine's... ouch, this'll be hard to draw
lol
I'd draw something more detailed if I had ASCIIflow
Bob
Bob
modem---->rpi---->router/switch/AP---->router/switch/AP
  |
  |
  \---->router/switch/AP---->switch
           |
           |
           \---->switch/AP
that's a reasonable representation
I'm on that switch in the middle
that could probably be considered our 'main' network
14:41
yeah
Bob
Bob
there's a separate network going off from the rpi
thats... complex
Bob
Bob
that's for, uh, other people
ahh, guest network
Bob
Bob
I considered moving the main network onto the rpi
14:42
lol
Bob
Bob
but didn't want to touch it at the time
@JourneymanGeek putting it mildly
tbh I don't control anything after the router on the rpi
in your shoes, I'd just throw on a cheap wifi dongle, and use hostapd for a ap
Bob
Bob
so that last leaf on the top row? it's a router right now, but could be anything
@JourneymanGeek the guest portion is actually partially wireless, partially wired
and I want it to be on the WAN side of our primary router
that's a very important part of it
I trust it about as far as the public internet
in fact, probably less
lol
if I end up getting a local job, and living with my parents a little longer, getting a small, seperated network for my own gear is likely to happen
(I seriously would find life easier if all my systems were connected by gig-e)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek that's made my life a lot easier :D
file transfer? faster than the HDD! :D
14:45
@Bob: yeah ;p
I'm currently waffling over whether I need a 'proper' nas
Bob
Bob
I run a cat5e to my bed so I can plug my laptop in if I need to :P
@JourneymanGeek eh, entirely too expensive for me
come on, $200 for a HDD container?
I'm toying with adding a power line networking node to my room as well
@Bob: which runs independantly.
Bob
Bob
it'll only cost me $100 to chuck a modern Pentium onto that old computer in the other room :P
@Bob: power use, and size ;p
Bob
Bob
prob is, that's on a 100mbit segment of the network :\
14:47
as I said, waffling ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek fine, a mobile celeron if I really wanted
a 'proper' NAS is hardly space-efficient
I'm currently trying to to a cost/benefir analysis
@Bob: some are pretty small
Bob
Bob
on the primary network, only the router/AP and the lone switch are gigabit
the other switch/AP is 100mbit
the current option is to add a bigger usb hdd onto the raspi
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek eh, it's a mini-atx
not too big
14:48
or to revive my old atom box
Bob
Bob
which reminds me
@CanadianLuke weren't you the guy with the idea of RAID 1 on flash drives?
but as I said, I'm currently doing a cost/benefit analysis first ;p
Bob
Bob
if you were... your employer has proper switches and wiring and won't spring for a proper HDD??
hmm
;p
oldie but a goodie.
hm,
not cool
the power outage seems to have caused the raspi not to boot.
Bob
Bob
o.O
@JourneymanGeek check the SD card
14:52
@Bob: yeah
Bob
Bob
Pis love killing the card :\
will need to do that tommorrow. That specific SD card tends to corrupt when there's a power outage
and of couuurrrseeee I didn't image it
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek RAID 4 o.O
are there any actual implementations of that?
no idea ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek :(
