@allquixotic o.O
@allquixotic huh, I've never had trouble getting the antennae onto those wifi cards
getting them off, on the other hand...
@allquixotic ouch :(

@allquixotic: how many antennae does the mini PCIe card have?

07:37
@JourneymanGeek if it's like a laptop one, typically just oen antenna - two connectors
most laptops loop the antenna around the monitor
@Bob: it is a laptop one.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek well, I guess that answers your question :P
yeah ;p
was wondering if 5ghz antennae were any different ;p
/me will look it up the next time he's at SLS
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek uhm.. don't think so
I swapped out my 2.4GHz card with a 2.4/5GHz one
used the same antennae :\
(though perhaps that reduced performance, idk)
07:53
yeah
Bob
Bob
The connectors were identical, anyway
considering I have a dual band router, its worth considering
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Well, the card only had the two connectors for one loop, anyway

Bob
07:56
@JourneymanGeek I don't think the slight performance differences are significant for wifi
unless you're really pushing the distance and/or throughput
which I'm not ;p
distance is pretty good. If I REALLY needed throughput, I go wired ethernet

Q: Routing error to WINS name without .local

floteI'm having a weird issue on the network. all windows PCs behind the main router, XP, win 7 and win 8 are routing an adress incorrectly, to what looks like an external ip. The machine all the PCs are trying to reach does not have a FQDN, so there's no TLD in the address, just a WINS name without...

no answers :-/
I ran antivirus and malwarebytes on all the clients. found something on one of them, but I don't think that was it
I guess the next step is to shut everything down and boot everything up starting with router -> server -> clients

what are the DNS suffices in the TCP/IP settings for that adapter?
all the pcs are affected
Bob
Bob
08:21
o.O
@flote Try route print as well
paste the output of ipconfig /all and route print
preferably from Win7
also, as a kinda brute-force fix, you could try adding local to the DNS suffices in the TCP/IP settings, or in the DHCP settings on the router
it might also be a good idea to trawl the router settings - see if anything stands out
what's the name of the target machine?
and what's its OS?

now where was that list of Windows translations...
@flote Last thing I can think of that might be interesting - nslookup nameoftarget
also, you'll definitely want to add that this is a NAS (and the specific model/OS) to your question
that is extremely significant information - especially if all other computers behave as normal
@Bob >< yeah. good point.

Bob
o.o
so it works from nslookup
where'd you get that external IP from?
if I ping svhnas
ms is 182
if I ping another server its < 1ms
but when I connected through my phone instead, I got different nmap results for the same ip, so I'm not sure it's external
first I thought it had something to do with the VPNs
but I shut them both down, and it was the same
Bob
Bob
@flote try restarting the computers after shutting them down
and that's also why I asked for a route print
because VPNs don't always clean up the routing tables and DNS settings after shutting down
nslookup is slightly different from the standard DNS resolver
I can't rememebr the differences right now
but when they don't match up, something weird is happening

Q: Under what conditions with NSLOOKUP and PING return different IP addresses on windows XP?

Inside our firewall at work, my machine frequently resolves to the wrong IP for some of our domains. We have a DNS server that is our primary DNS to resolve external domains to internal IP addresses (192.X.X.X instead of the public IP). Sometimes I will get resolved to the public IP, which won'...

Q: nslookup returns the right IP, ping still goes to the wrong ip

FlyinButrsOk, so here's the setup. Laptop is connected to our company VPN (Juniper Network Connect 7.2.0). There are two DNS Search suffix's (domain1.com, domain2.local). From that laptop, while connected, nslookup polls the correct DNS server, returns the right IP. Pinging the IP works fine. Pinging ...

nothing particularly interesting, unfortunately
were the VPNs set up on the router?

@Bob 192.168.0.9
right?
yes, the VPNs are through the router
Bob
Bob
08:46
@flote Uh - try nblookup - download from MS support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;830578
nslookup is DNS-only
so it's possible that your WINS server is returning the incorrect IP
(and that adding .local forces it to use DNS? maybe)
hm, could be
Bob
Bob
ping and others use the DNS client, which might look at WINS first
nslookup gets the DNS server's IP and opens a direct socket connection
it started after the WINS server mysteriously rebooted by itself now that you mention it (it's a VM, so it wasn't a power failure)
Bob
Bob
@flote ya, give nblookup a shot, but everything does point that way now
probably should have mentioned that too oO
Bob
Bob
08:49
DNS is being serviced by your router (.10) - I didn't notice you had a WINS server running on .9 before
nor do I really have any idea what a WINS server is, apart from a legacy DNS-like thing :P
yeah, it's a virtualised windows server 2003
Bob
Bob
(like, why the heck do you need WINS when you have DNS)
wins is easier :p
just point it in the same direction
:)
Bob
Bob
@flote uhhhh
@flote it's... seriously legacy stuff
like, older than XP
yeah I know
Bob
Bob
08:52
the only part of XP that still uses netbios is that network browser thing
seriously, drop it if you can :S
(also, having two competing nameservers? bad!)
but since we had issues connecting the newer machines to the smb server as a DC I just gave up on the whole domain thing. I know you can have DNS on the windows server without the domain, but my long term goal has been migrating all the file server duties to the linux box, but I havent gotten LDAP to work
my IT duties are secondary, so I mostly just fix what's broken unfortunately
Bob
Bob
DNS is likely far more robust
especially on newer OSes
now the admin account on the client I'm using seems corrupt somehow ><

troubleshooting in swedish is a little harder, and sometimes it's pretty hard to translate to MS-error-speak
it might be that it's using the old server admin profile which it can't access
but I should be able to log on anyway, right

09:21
@flote would be better if you added some troubleshooting steps (e.g. nslookup), and why it worked with .local, and why it worked on some other machines (presumably, OS X doesn't listen for/try WINS first), and why nslookup worked where ping didn't
that would maximise the chance of helping others
@Bob: o0

@Bob Spotify isn't peer to peer (that I know of)
@allquixotic "Spotify uses peer to peer transfers to supplement their available bandwidth."
Spotify is a commercial music streaming service providing digital rights management-restricted content from record labels including Sony, EMI, Warner Music Group and Universal. Total users reached 20 million by December 2012, 5 million of whom pay a monthly subscription fee that varies based on locale. The system is currently available using Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, iOS, Android, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Windows Phone, S60 (Symbian), webOS, Samsung Smart TV, Squeezebox, Boxee, Sonos, WD TV, Roku, MeeGo, Telia Digital-tv, Openpandora and TiVo. Spotify was not available in t...
Pretty sure you get the music streams from Spotify's central servers and it's all legal etc - the sharing aspect of it is just for sharing playlists... If it's actually using your bandwidth for p2p distribution of encrypted song data, you could probably disable that part
It might do p2p for UPNP discoverable local subnets.... Really not sure about Internet p2p
@Bob did you see my review of the NUC?
It used to be p2p, it doesn't use it much p2p much now
according to my network monitor it does a fair amount of uploading
It doesn't do it on Android though, right? Please say it isn't the reason my battery dies so fast
Especially considering that most people with a smartphone have data caps, if they are using my phone to send other people music while I'm out and about, I'm going to cancel my subscription right this instant.
I can just use Google Play Music All Access. Same price, just slightly worse selection of music. And it nicely combines local and remote music downloads.
13:24
Dear Spotify Reps, can you please answer the following questions to try and clear a few things up (and if you can't can you find someone in development who can, someone at Spotify must know how the Android app is supposed to work!)...

Does the Android app use any P2P networking at all?
Does the Android app try to cache frequently streamed tracks like the desktop app and will it always try and use a cached version of a track instead of streaming? If not, in what situations will the app stream instead of using the cache?
The answers to your questions are how things "should" work with the Android app without inteference of any kind of bug.

1.) No, Spotify for Android does not use peer-to-peer networking.
2.) Yes, the Android app will cache frequently streamed tracks. I'm not sure if it will "always" use cached over streaming since the Android operating system might clear the cache when it needs space.
3.) Downloaded tracks will be used in preference to streaming tracks (if available).
4.) Downloaded tracks will be used in preference to streaming tracks (if available) regardless of the sound quality of it's
seems some people have issues with a lot of data being downloaded
14:01

Defense of the Ancients (DotA) is a multiplayer online battle arena mod for the video game Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos and its expansion, Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne, based on the "Aeon of Strife" map for StarCraft. The objective of the scenario is for each team to destroy the opponents' Ancient, heavily guarded structures at opposing corners of the map. Players use powerful units known as heroes, and are assisted by allied heroes and AI-controlled fighters. As in role-playing games, players level up their heroes and use gold to buy equipment during the mission. The scenario was ...

@ThatBrazilianGuy no -- and I don't even like JavaScript
@flote cool, thanks

@ThatBrazilianGuy Bah! WC. I played Starcraft ONE. I played the original Aeon of Strife. I saw the DotA genre grow out of nothing.
@flote The 500px photo viewer has "prev" and "next" buttons. I wanted something like a greasemonkey / userscript that made it advance to the next photo each 10 seconds.
500px.com/photo/54723772?from=popular => clicking the photo invokes the viewer
just wrap it in a setTimeout
I'm assuming it's easy. But I have no idea. I speak no JS
var asdf = setTimeout(function() { nextFunctionCaller();}, 10000);
10000 is in milliseconds
do you have a script that handles the clicking already?
14:28
ah ok
are the pictures large?
I think the website resizes them
ok, then you can preload all the images
I just want to leave the official website on my 2nd monitor, rotating the images
@flote Oh, I see what you mean

Q: JavaScript Preloading Images

FranciscCan you tell me if the function I wrote below is enough to preload images in most if not all browsers commonly used today? function preloadImage(url) { var img=new Image(); img.src=url; } I have an array of imageURLs that I loop and call the preloadImage function for each URL. Thank y...

so it's just for your own use?
you're not actually uploading the script so others will see the same thing
D2 network is stoned
14:31
No need for preloading. I just want to leave the tab open on my 2nd monitor while I type text on other monitor, and for the images to advance. There's already a "next" button in the UI and (I suppose) an underlying js funtion for advancing to the next photo, I just want that function to be called each x seconds
@flote yep
ah ok
yeah, then you can just hack it from the web console in the browser
let me see if I can find it

@allquixotic any good?
@flote my spectrum isn't even particularly crowded, and it's laggy as fuc -- imagine a really terrible Digital TV (over airwaves) connection -- that's about how reliable it is
I suppose it's not surprising, since it uses WiFi Direct as the core networking
WiFi is about as reliable as rand() == 0.00000000123456789
I have an openelec box atm
but it's a little annoying that you can't play netflix or hbo on it
and HBO nordic have been promising an xbox app for more than a year now, but still nothing
oh, it seems they actually finally came through
15:18
Chromecast and Miracast are both a crapshoot in my testing
but still, it's annoying to have the openelec box and the xbox
but the video quality on the ION powered openelc is awesome
I even tried it on the raspberry pi, and it worked remarkably well
and it only needs usb power from the TV
if you're looking for some kind of set-top or HTPC box, a NUC is really nice
