@Psycogeek You mean Sesame?
"Open Sesame" ( iftaḥ yā simsim, ) is a magical phrase in the story of "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" in One Thousand and One Nights. It opens the mouth of a cave in which forty thieves have hidden a treasure. Documentation The phrase first appears in writing in Antoine Galland's Les Mille et une nuits (1704–1717) as Sésame, ouvre-toi (English, "Sesame, open!"). No earlier oral or written version of the story is known. Galland's phrase has been variously translated from the French into English as "Sesame, Open", "Open, Sesame" and "Open, O Simsim". @Braiam Yes, but this one was designed for degaussing
I think the refer magnet (as stated) isnt going to be a problem. But then again i got so tired of Fridge magenets falling off i use neomybdiym (no i cant spell it) magents there even.
@Psycogeek don't worry, Google can't either
assuming that the data hangs around on the drive for 10 years, and magnitism can polarise slowly over time, by (new word) Magneteomigration :-) i would avoid playing with Strong magnets around them, , , then complaining that bad sectors were cropping up.

Well he was talking about any need to be carefull, with magnets. i think it is true that most of the big easy destruction ability is gone. only minor care needed, like putting your 27" subwoofers speaker backside on the top of your hard drive.
---But, let us not forget MicroMachines. the accelerometer , and compass are not electronic devices. They are actually little teeny versions of what was once used to do that. Why just this last week i cleared up a electronic compass from being 100% wrong, by degaussing it.

CAV & CAA are ambiguous.

Bob
Bob
@Ash Only one of the terms is relevant in this context...
actually, I have no idea what CAA is :P
!!wiki Constant Angular Velocity
In optical storage, constant angular velocity (CAV) is a qualifier for the rated speed of an optical disc drive, and may also be applied to the writing speed of recordable discs. A drive or disc operating in CAV mode maintains a constant angular velocity, contrasted with a constant linear velocity (CLV). Like all spinning-disk media, the CD-ROM drive includes a spindle motor that turns the media containing the data to be read. The spindle motor of a standard CD-ROM is very different from that of a hard disk or floppy drive in one very important way: it does not spin at a constant speed. ...

Oh, Constant Angular Acceleration. Not sure how that's relevant in this case - if it's constant acceleration... O.O

07:42
lol
Bob
Bob
oh wait
In optical storage, constant linear velocity (CLV) is a qualifier for the rated speed of an optical disc drive, and may also be applied to the writing speed of recordable discs. CLV implies that the angular velocity (i.e. rpm) varies during an operation, as contrasted with CAV modes. The concept of constant linear velocity was patented in 1886 by phonograph pioneers Chichester Bell and Charles Tainter. Laserdiscs, the first consumer optical discs, used constant linear velocity to double playback time (CLV disc can hold 1 hour per side; CAV disc only 30 minutes). As the motor's speed decr...
So not really constant, strictly speaking
Ooh so the speed increases and decreases dynamically
I though the max speed in which the HDD platter spun was the speed qt which the head could write to the extreme edges of the platter
Bob
Bob
@Gowtham CLV is not used in modern HDDs
???
HDDs use CAV
the platter spins at the same speed at all times
therefore, the 'data' passes udner the head faster near the outer edges
I have no idea what you're on about.
So the outer tracks store more data than the inner tracks ?

"If a node A on the Internet is closer (fewer hops away) to the Internet backbone than a node B, then A is said to be upstream of B or conversely, B is downstream of A."
In computer networking, upstream refers to the direction in which data can be transferred from the client to the server (uploading). This differs greatly from downstream not only in theory and usage, but also in that upstream speeds are usually at a premium. Whereas downstream speed is important to the average home user for purposes of downloading content, uploads are used mainly for web server applications and similar processes where the sending of data is critical. Upstream speeds are also important to users of peer-to-peer software. ADSL and cable modems are asymmetric, with the upstr...
