quick question, if i've got 2 ca's and i want ldapsearch to trust certs off either, i should be able to append them together into a pem file and setup ldap.conf to look at that file, right ? cant get it working for the life of me
if thats meant to work, i guess ill ask on the site. frustrating as hell
@Sirex that kind of thing is probably better suited to serverfault
yeah prolly.
im sure i've had this working before it it just worked first time... starting to question my entire understanding of ssl at this point.
ill ask it over there. know this is going to be a kick-yourself type answer.

Hi folks. I’ve been trying to get an understanding of permissions as they relate to /usr/local/ in regards to homebrew. I’ve noticed dozens of questions and answers on superuser but none of them seem complete. How can this issue be reduced to a single, complete answer? Thanks.

@allquixotic Could you give me a quick sanity check: it is not possible for VM software to take a singlethreaded application and parallelise it. Correct?
(I was sitting in on a proposal for a new server... someone raised that SQL Server Expresses could only run a single thread ["core"] and their response was that running in a VM would somehow bypass this by "runn[ing] it on multiple cores". I mean... I suppose it could switch cores/processors, and kill caching in the process, but it's not gonna be able ot turn a single-threaded process into a multi-threaded one... is it?)
06:33
@Bob would it have anything to do with running a second instance of a single threaded program?
some programs are not only single threaded, but dont easily run a second instance of themselves. In a second shell kinda thing, a sandbox, a seperate virtual system, these few programs like that, wouldnt know the other one was running.
I'm slightly annoyed at this superuser.com/questions/679202/…
@Bob: whoever suggested this is a complete idiot
Bob
Bob
06:49
@JourneymanGeek Ya - but he sounded convinced enough about it that I wanted a sanity check before I went and told my boss "no, he's wrong" :P
(though, you can, in theory, run a threaded application on a single core system with some VM software. This is a horrible idea outside testing)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek yea, you can do this with USB passthrough
@Bob: tried it. froze my mouse
Bob
Bob
of course, then you need to have a second mouse
Also, the OP didn't mention this FIVE DAYS after I answered
Bob
Bob

@JourneymanGeek well, passthrough means the host will no longer see it
@Bob: in the guest ;p

@Bob: the guest didn't see it either.

Bob
@Psycogeek SQL Server Express is the free version, and therefore has artificial performance restrictions.
And I'm pretty sure he was just talking about running on a single VM.
@Bob: I'd have answered it anyway. It just seems like bad form to move the goalposts on a bounty
Bob
Bob
06:52
It's... yea, I wonder if anyone noticed my "WTF" face when he was talking about that.
@Bob figures. So how do they waste a companies time trying to squeese out a bit more free, when a licence may very well cost less than the employing of cheapskates? Something i might try and do.
I got all the time in the world here to find all the ways to be cheap. but even getting 4 people in a meeting taking 1 hour, blows $100 savings right out the door. Add in a few problems cause by being to cheap there goes $100 in reliability. Add also they change who is managing it, there goes $200 for the guy who cant figure it out for a day. Is the licence beginning to look any cheaper?
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek small company, internal use, full version costs 6k for a 10CAL license
@Bob jeez, i hope it is BUG free and comes with in-house on call experts.

and that meeting was to get a new server. sql well be decided later

one thing I always hated about some of the games is for 99% of it it is a cake walk, then they toss this boss at me that is 50times as much work (and work it becomes) .
About 40deaths later, I am looking for my first clue to finishing this "boss" be it having to coordinate 10 actions at once in time, or beat some huge monster. Finnaly I find out the boss goes down if you blow 3 times in his ear, tug on his tail twice, and do a tap dance. 5 hours trying to beat the thing, and the programmer had set up some insane action that does it in 3 moves. Only to find out 5 minutes later that 3 steps t
@allquixotic This one is subjective because I never played Minecraft - only familiar with name.
@Bob Are you annoyed by recent integration of Google+ in YouTube's comments?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo ya think?
@Bob Yes, I think.
No more will i be a slave to the Big end boss and some psycotic episode from "Groundhog Day" or "The never ending story" , thats right i am a quitter :-) in good company cnn.com/2011/TECH/gaming.gadgets/08/17/… What I've been told as a blanket expectation is that 90% of players who start your game will never see the end of it unless they watch a clip on YouTube," says Keith Fuller
08:55
@Psycogeek What is your take on this article? Why growd of 80s and 90s suffered from OCD until they completed video game and spent days redoing same thing over and over again and expecting different results compared to crowd of recent days?
@Boris_yo Because today we can see the end on youtube ?
After playing 2 or 70 hours of any game i really would kill myself to see the end. then it might stretch into one of those 36 hour days :-) and eventually you gotta sleep. Waking up in the morning with a more clear head , thinking again, i might be game shy .
-- It really isnt about the ending though is it? it is about expecting something ahead, its just over this hill. I follow the rainbow i get to the pot of gold ,rainbows are circles, so there is no end, but I dont want to know that, because it is all about the journey. When i reach the wonderfull end of a game, i am depressed at how uneventfull and unsatisfying the ending really is, especially if there is a planned sequil (they dont want you to end).
while the ends themselves may not be the glorious win i expect, there is still the "finish" like a "job well done" it is "play well done" (boris calls OCD :-)
09:26
@Psycogeek ^-^ You know, you have a point here actually and not only does it make player lose interest in completing video game after watching ending on YouTube, it may also prevent gamers from buying video games since they already saw everything. Can one predict the decline of video games industry in the future caused by YouTube?
Although a fan, I did not want to play Fallout 3 on my laptop which was not strong enough to let me enjoy game in its all beauty. That's why I wanted to see gameplay on YouTube to at least somewhat feel that Fallout atmosphere I am familiar with from old Fallout games. It was several days until I found myself witnessing game's ending and forgetting about the game. This saved me time and money, in addition to not that good of impression of 3rd installment.
@Boris_yo Guilty again. I have gone to youtube to see if the game play was the kind I liked. I will watch more if the game play video (the youtube itself) is good. I will avoid watching too much if i intend to play. If i dont intend to play it Ever, I feel more free to continue watching (no repetition) . I have watched a whole game, then wondered what the hell i did that for, when i could have been playing anything. a game i did not even intend to ever play :-)
@Boris_yo LOL, well so much for that, Fallout 4 ?
09:44
@Psycogeek When?
@Boris_yo the year 2299
Oh wait, that might be the year for the real thing, not the game.
@Psycogeek I always look for HD video for gameplay. I watched Shadow Warrior reboot or remake month ago until game was completed. There is another reason I prefer watching gameplay videos - person playing game is a pro.
@Psycogeek No worries, after I die I reincarnate in another body who will experience sequel at that year. But hopefully this is my last reincarnation on earth.
@Boris_yo Yes all to often the people making videos seem like they either play for life, or already went though the game once. then they also can edit out the misteaks and errors. I much prefer people tripping over the game, and trying to figure it out the first time. Because that person is more like me.

@JourneymanGeek I would take one that is not made from shit.
even if it was shit coffee?

@JourneymanGeek In this case it is subjective.
There are people with shit taste and there are with true taste.
Coffee is serious business.
@JourneymanGeek As well as chocolate. Shortages of which will be expected and prices fly up.
so, shit coffee is shit coffee, even when it isn't shit coffee.
but sometimes, its better than no coffee
@JourneymanGeek If person is that addicted and desperate then yes.
Low quality coffee and chocolate - headache bringers.
Sometimes you need coffee to deal with the world.

@JourneymanGeek If you are superhero.
sometimes even if you're a super villain, and today is NOT a good day for everyone else to die
@JourneymanGeek sometimes the world needs coffee to deal with you
I mean, we all wake up in the morning, and want to kill everything in sight. Steal socks, maul pillows...
coffee is what seperates man from the ravening beast
@JourneymanGeek i think that is called addiction
I cant do much caffine, because after a small ammount, i gotta have Something, anything all day long. Usually that means ravenous eating till belotion sets in. When in reality i just want more Drugs.
(oh, I just have one cup a day)
11:31
@JourneymanGeek I am not of such nature.
They sell these cola sodas as "thirst quenchers" but everytime I suck one down I get even more thirsty. For some reason the caffiene sucks the water out of my system , peeing all day. I guess it is the water based toxic removal.
@Psycogeek Hmmm just pulled NiMHs after 2-day charge and voltage meter shows 1.40v While normal voltage should be 1.25v

This makes me doubt the proper working condition of charger.
@Psycogeek Fluoride water
@Boris_yo fresh off the charger. so that sort of tells you the charger is still working. with the light still on always, i would want to know if it also stops. With nickle based batteries it is a lot harder to tell what is going on. (with li-ion the voltage mostly tells the charge level) with ni-?? it helps to graph or monitor the voltage , or do "capacity" checks and all.
@Boris_yo what is normal? A ni-mhy could be mostly discharged and read 1.25, or it could be "in use", and read 1.25. if it reads 1.25 on charger, then ot or the charger is not doing well. Check out some Charge and discharge graphs for them, that can provide some clues.
@Boris_yo the video, that sucks. either there is a connection problem to the batts, or Just a connection issues with the leds.
there google.com/… helps if i speel it wright

A: At what voltage is a NiMH battery empty?

s3cNiMH cells have a value of 1.2V for most of their discharge cycle. Fully charged they are about 1.4V. Since you are getting slightly more I'd recommend checking that they are all at the same potential and slightly discharging the ones above 1.4V before your next charge. I'd recommend not discharg...

the second answer i would concider a "better" answer, cept for this ". This sort of thing is a lot more complex than it appears at first glance."
A person can write a whole book about this stuff, and the people reading still will not understand it all. 80% of the chargers made, are using a well known, and overused alogrythm that is actually the Worst thing you can do to a battery. But it works, and works in many different situations.
@Psycogeek Where do I get charger with algorithm safe for batteries?
OOps, didnt finish that. Better than reading the book, is to see it in action. with a $20 meter (or even some $5 ones) and watching how everything acts. Then also with a capacity charger, like a simple $30 hobby charger, or a maha digital readout charger.
@Boris_yo They do not actually manufacture chargers with perfect alogrythms, because (again) it would not work in every possible scenario. Like temperature alogrythm would fail if the temps in the room are wackey, a open window, a vent blowing on it, if put outside and all.
-And one big key to them never making a great charger. It would be rejected by experts (yes pros) as having the wrong style. Things have been done wrongly and poorly and stupidly for so long, that correcting it, and doing it right, is concidered wrong.
If you make a great voltage alogrythm, which takes into account the state of charge (really quite simple) different batteries will react different. so a person would have to calibrate it fow how their particular batteries act. and the batteries change over much and much time and cycles.
-just to twist it all back around . because of the classic battery torturing alogrythm that has been used since 1960 is the most common and everything is made that way. The batteries ThemSelves are being manufactures with that restriction in mind. So for years they make a battery that adopts to a bad charging method :-)
With batteries made to work stupid, and chargers that are stupid, you would have to change the whole world, to change it. This is why new chemistries with new charge methods come along , and can be much better. But a li-ion (type) charge alogrythm would treat the nickle based batteries much better too.

hi tom. fun job you got there. sounds like you just need to create a stock image for the single model of all same computers, and deploy that image to them all (without net methods), then mabey change some ID things. I have no idea how to do that.
Thing is, I don't think I can 'cause of the Licenses.
I wonder if I can contact the supplier and get a 8.1 install USB.
@tombull89 I dont know, easier to change the licence than to download 2 gig?
Hmm.
I'll have a look and see if you can change the key afterwards.
I would put your chances of getting a good answer out there on the question as pretty high. seems there is more than one "IT" professional here.
plus you have the advantage of "there Has To be a better way" :-)
12:38
Sometimes simple things like port forwarding can still confuse the hell out of me.
I'm trying to get PPTP VPN to work on a Windows server which sits behind a Netgear router
I've set the router up to forward TCP 1723 to the server, but I can't connect :(
When I scan the public IP address of the router, nmap tells me that port 1723 is "closed"
And that supposedly means "Closed ports have no application listening on them, though they could open up at any time." Okay, then, why did it even come up in the results?
The server says it's listening on 0.0.0.0:1723, so where is the problem?
I bet I just need to reboot the router or something :P
@OliverSalzburg how can a server listen on 0.0.0.0 isnt that an invalid address?
@Psycogeek No. It basically means "all available addresses"
@OliverSalzburg superuser.com/questions/592555/… ohh, damn. then i really messed up when i use that in my hosts to invalidate everything. Somebody should have mentioned that.
Bob
Bob
12:58
@tombull89 eh... if you can figure out where it dumps the downloaded files (shouldn't be too hard), yo ucan just copy it to all devices
@Psycogeek nah
when you 'connect to' 0.0.0.0, that's just plain invalid
it's fine in the hosts file, and I prefer it over 127.0.0.1
when you bind a listening service on 0.0.0.0, that means listen on all IPs
@OliverSalzburg can you connect from another device on the LAN?
most NAT routers will actually drop packets
so if every other port reports as timed out, and that one reports as closed, likely it's being forwarded to the server which is then returning closed
13:15
Rebooting the router did it :-P
@Bob ok, i was trying to find the most "nul" way to do it. I did not understand why i would want to send it to local to break, or send it to anything, that is why i thought 0 sounded better.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek 0 generally is better
Windows, at least, will just instantly reply with an error
127.0.0.1 could be a potential problem if you're actually hosting anything on the local machine
@OliverSalzburg you have a weird router
@Bob also just in case a virus thought it was being smart an looked for the 127 thing, it woundt be there. That method is used less often.

true, though I count that rather low on my list of priorities :P
@DarthAndroid those two are not mutually exclusive.

13:36
@Psycogeek Maha? I heard good things about it, but I also heard good things about LaCrosse: lacrossetechnology.com/power.php
@Bob Completed both and prequel was more challenging. And prequel has so many addons.
@Bob ""Tried to contact EA Games (for support) but it is like the needle in a haystack in a pitch black room"" Hmm, then mabey you would be better off with the $120 package which comes with 2 hours of a professional hand holding you through the operations of your computer and the game :-) Because with the $9 version, your on your own.
@Boris_yo Prefer the maha over the lacross. the maha has a voltage stop that is an anti torture added alogrythm. the lacross dont have it yet that i know of. Either one of them will still show you a LOT of information, and well worth it if you use like 16+ rechargables (money into the cells). I got the opertunity to have a meltdown with a lacross that was working ok, then glitched. Destroyed 4 great batteries in the process too.
@Psycogeek Out of warranty?
Really this should not even be searchable with a battery charger google.com/…
@Boris_yo It was out of warrenty when i opened it up to find out WHY :-) It had served well, and worked for a long time. Note: people have had huge meltdown like issues with a maha too, even when it has the extra protective voltage max.
@Psycogeek You should have taken it to service center. Which of these MAHAs do you recommend? mahaenergy.com/chargers
@Psycogeek What happens when meltdown kicks in? Explosion?
@Boris_yo the analyser (digital readout) is what i was referring to. that 9000 mahaenergy.com/mh-c9000 is a pain to figure out how to SET , the lacross is easier. but most experts would prefer the maha over the lacross.
13:49
@Psycogeek Why not make several presets (algorithms) in one charger and let user decide when it is appropriate to use specific preset?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo overpriced
NiMH isn't hard to charge
I wouldn't spend more than maybe $20 on a charger for them. and that's on the high end.
@Psycogeek lol What is there to set up? You sound like it is harder than BIOS.
Bob
Bob
A Li-ion charger, on the other hand... yea, don't skimp on those.
@Bob You won't find such charger for $20
@Boris_yo it just cooks the batteries, most of the cells will just gass out. then the platic trash melts into a blob.
Bob
Bob
13:50
@Boris_yo Again, it's overpriced.
You don't need that kind of charger.
NiMH is easy to charge.
@Boris_yo like 16 freaking button clicks to get a custom rate going.
Bob
Bob
And the batteries are cheap.
NiMH battery dying? Just replace it.
@Bob OKay I don't but I need a charger that is reliable and won't damage my batts.
Bob
Bob
They are nowhere near as volatile as a Li-ion.
@Boris_yo And, again, NiMH batteries are easy to charge.
@Bob Depends on quality of charger. Regular chargers are crap like @Psycogeek said.
13:52
I have good sanyo eneloops from 2006, that using proper charge and discharge methods are still working at 90%.
Bob
Bob
And you can get a perfectly good one for $20.
@Psycogeek What's your secret to proper use?
Bob
Bob
Pretty sure they're down to $10 in some places now.
@Bob Is it price that determines quality or honest reviews of a product?
@Boris_yo The problem was, were supposed to be "saving the invrinment" and we end up tossing the rechargables. The inviroment is my wallet :-)
Bob
Bob
13:53
I'm not going to bother with any additional trouble to prolong the life of NiMH batteries anyway - they're cheap and quite safe.
@Psycogeek NiMH batteries are actually safe to throw out.
NiCd, on the other hand... those are bad. Heavy metals and all.
@Bob Well, as long as I know my charger doesn't damage batteries, I am okay with that charger.
@Bob they actually claim to recycle them here. dont know how far they get with that.
Bob
Bob
Still recommended to recycle them, but they won't cause any direct harm in landfill.
NiCd will leach cadmium into the groundwater. That's really bad.
NiMH... recycling reduces how much new stuff you need to mine, but chucking them into landfill won't really cause any direct ill effects.
@Psycogeek Can scientists be stupid? What an oxymoron...
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo It's hard to damage a NiMH battery.
Again, they're easy to charge.
13:56
@Boris_yo Your kidding right? Who was it said the world was flat?
@Bob Unless you use defective/bad quality charger.
Bob
Bob
A trickle charge is perfectly fine. The optimal fast charge algorithm is fairly simple.
@Boris_yo And how would such a charger damage a NiMH cell?
You could massively overcharge one, I suppose, but that's actually difficult to do.
Li-ion batteries are far more volatile and have much more complicated optimal charging algorithms, and I can still get a very good, highly rated, well tested (and analysed) charger in the region of $30.
Well, for the smaller batteries anyway.
@Bob We just discussed this with @Psycogeek and it turns out, even most reliable chargers cause meltdown. But I will at least use those than bad quality chargers.
Bob
Bob
A heavy duty hobby charger with dozens or hundreds of Watts output is normally more expensive.
@Psycogeek No.
@Bob 3.4v batteries? 14500, 18500 or CRs?
Bob
Bob
14:00
NiMH charging... the optimal algorithm is normally delta-Voltage.
The optimal Li-ion algorithm is CC/CV.
Some similarities, but largely different - and termination detection for NiMH and Li-ion is very different.
NiMH charging is stopped when the voltage actually dips a little. Li-ion CC/CV finishes with the CV stage, at the end of which the charging current drops below a threshold.
of course, you can calibrate the exact cutoffs (and in the case of CC/CV, at which point it switches to CV... heck, at which point it switches to CC from the protection-resetting trickle)
@Bob uhh yes, i am battery geek, I have 20+ years of experince with battery packs chargers and making my own alogrythms than the people who make chargers in china :-)
Bob
Bob
some chargers will have more optimal calibrations than others, but what's best can depend on the specific batteries
@Bob And compared to NiMHs, lithiums have integrated overcharge protection circuit.
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo ...I wouldn't trust those.
@Psycogeek And you claim to be more knowledgeable than the experience of hundreds of professionals with a vested interest in safe and efficient chargers?
@Bob Ha, you would trust those without overcharge protection? :)
14:04
@Bob Not for toys either, we had to have 100% reliable batteries on the job over and over again, using 24-36 cells at each job, and no way to change them out once the job starts.
Bob
Bob
By the way, these algorithms were all developed in the western world, not that it really matters.
@Bob Not only me, but many battery geeks, happen to know these things.
@Psycogeek You make your own algorithm? How? In a laboratory?
@Boris_yo If you call a workbench with crap all over it a lab :-)
@Psycogeek @Bob Try arguing with Battery University: batteryuniversity.com/learn
Bob
Bob
14:07
@Psycogeek Great! If you happen to know a more efficient and/or safer algorithm, know what? Go patent it! Go licence it! There are many companies (especially with the adoption of electric cars) who would be very interested. Know why that wouldn't work? Because, chances are, those are not more efficient and/or safer.
I have been through like 16 crappy chargers , from ni-Cd and on. Plus we got many hand made charges, for all the different portable stuff.
Bob
Bob
(Also, just about all chargers use the same basic algos - it's the specific calibration values that might differ.)
'course, not saying you should buy crappy chargers
just saying $50 for a NiMH one is rather much
it's like buying a $5k gaming machine solely for doing your taxes
Presentally i have 6 active chargers for just AA, 8-10 various for li-ion. I have a li-ion D-cell that has lasted 10 years. But there is no such thing ? but I have 3 of them :-)
There is a LOT of misinformation, a lot of BS, and a lot of bad stuff. why would that be any different than anything else?
Some people even claim that the battery manufactures and charger makers are in some sort of colusive effort to destroy thier own stuff , so we have to buy more :-)
I wouldnt believe it was anything more than the usual cheap junk not made to last, the is "good enough" makes great xmas gifts that will be perfect when put in the closet .
@Psycogeek Part of Lightbulb Conspiracy
@Boris_yo There isnt any light bulb conspiracy either :-) the light that burns brighter burns out faster. White hot molten choices made, determine the output vrses the lifetime.
14:17
@Bob Some college kids, did some testing long ago, where they got li-ion cells to last Way better than the simple charge methods used today. They did a big test where they showed that a spcific but simple method for charging left the batteries at 90% at the end of the excessive cycling. Do you see any chargers using the 50-50 pulse method ? Know anybody who owns one besides me?
And does anybody care? any body going to pay for it? did apple put it in thier laptops when they Claimed they were going to use a much better charge method?
Some of the best information in the world, especially on the web, is way down in the cracks of the load of BS that covers it. the best stuff out there, has like zero chance of survival. its like a hen in the fox house.

@Psycogeek People need to talk less BS and research more so authentic information will not be buries below BS.
Who would own the IP on that? some college students who probably have kids and jobs now. given a different set of circumstances they could all be stinkey rich running a "green" corporation, and selling a patents that anybody actually cares about. Some alterative universe :-)
@Boris_yo When i get done with all my testings, everything is obsolete that i tested. Things that last forever, dont re-sell over and again, and the company that made the best products , goes under for the lack of replacing crap. Speeded up testing s completly not the same. Like paints that acceletated testing shows they will last 20 years, but the paint is chipping and peeling in 5 years.
There is only so much that can be done to change any of any of it, no mater what method was used. The only way it worked before even was people took pride in the work, almost beyond the money. "that is my cell phone that your still using 8 years later, we did such a good job, yup I built that" .
14:57
@Psycogeek How many lappies do you have currently?
@Boris_yo none, just got 4-5 portable devices, all around 5" size. most of them so old they use use CE 4 5 android 1.6 . But i had 35 laptop battery packs once :-) to run a electric scooter.
@Boris_yo Did you see my non google glass thing?
@Psycogeek No
@Psycogeek Is this one of those things that you feel satisfied after buying but let them collect dust? dx.com/p/…
@Psycogeek I don't think it works.
@Boris_yo I want the "air mouse" version of those, but the mouse button locations on all of them are terrible.
@Boris_yo I have a terrible time using a touchpad, even tried a 4" sized one. too hard to drag'n'drop , scrolling up the side was nice. Hard to go from large sweep across the screen to tiny small movement control. I dont even like picking up a mouse over and over again to reset the location (trackball).
15:17
@Psycogeek You really think they award 6 iPhones 5? China afterall, so how come they have authentic iPhones if they sell knockoffs? dx.com/Event/…
@Boris_yo I dont know, i got ripped off by them so i cannot buy there anymore. But I did notice that they have raised prices to "normal" . Did you know they sold thousands of Fraud Sanyo eneloops, when called on it, they made a statement (saying the dealers fault). then turn around people ended up buying them again. But fact is some people got real ones. So you never know.
Not sure if it's already been said, but a big congrats to @Sathya and getting married. Wish you the best of luck.
@Psycogeek Not only them. There are focalprice, tinydeal etc. DX raised prices to normal? What do you mean?
@KronoS Wasap?
@Boris_yo geez ( i just saw that) I mean they have full price on stuff, instead of really cheap. it could mean more of it is real? But look at those black friday prices ? whats with that. I found those airmouse items for like $30 ebay.com/itm/… 3-4 different ones, thier SALE has them for $80 ? is this in yen or something?
Oh i see , nevermind, they come with the stick computer.
@Boris_yo see the airmouse with touchpad, I thought it was cool but then further research showed it had no accelerometer , no "gyro" ? I was hoping to get that aspect of it. I want the wave it around in the air kind of air to move the mouse, not just it being wireless. Because i thought it would be a great combo then of all things.
3 axial Gyro-sensor
@Psycogeek You mentioned they ripped you. What happened? They never ripped me.
15:50
@Boris_yo Ordered a big group of stuff, partial was sent, like only the cheapest stuff, had a backorder form signed. round and round , begging pleading, being lied to, scanned the signed backorder in to send them. nothing nothing . lost $40.
@Psycogeek What date was that? I ordered 2 orders of $35 and $32 and all went well. I hope you didn't skimp on tracking number?
@Boris_yo i had done 3 orders before i got ripped off. I doubt they did it criminally, just completely neglegent and could care less either.
@Psycogeek Tracking number used in last order?
@Boris_yo i dont think so. When i talked to payPal they said they could do nothing, because international.
@Boris_yo At No time did they ever say they sent the items. It was a backorder, they did not even have what they claimed to have to sell me. I get tons of little junk in the mail from china and other places, they were the first ones to rip me off.
16:07
@Psycogeek My orders were on backorder too. With tracking number, you have additional proof in your favor. PayPal don't care about international orders? wat
As much as i hate e-bay, at least there a person can complain in the feedback.
DX has deleted bad things put on thier site before. people saying how they got ripped off, bad reviews, everything. (not that i would want anyone trashing me on my own site) Newegg , amazon they do not delete bad press.
16:24
How do you put this SSD into laptop?
It has no cover at all and is susceptible to static damage. How do you hold it?
Hey moderator! Thanks for removing link above. Can you tell me your username? That was fast removal.
@Boris_yo it was a long time ago. i do not think they even had tracking like they do today. Could be that was added because of paypals refunding stuff when "seller" has no "proof"
@Boris_yo The moderator in question isn't in this room
16:43
@Psycogeek How many years ago?
@OliverSalzburg How he is able to manage requests and perform actions in rooms he isn't in?
17:04
@Boris_yo Magic
@OliverSalzburg A sorcery! A blasphemy!
@Boris_yo why you ask that? you already handled static sensitive devices in plenty? and you pulled off assembling the parts together right?
@Psycogeek Yes, but I wanted to know how such type of SSD can be fitted in hard drive bay. It does not have cover with places for screws. Instead I see it has 2 holes for screws on its board. This looks more like nude PCB than whole SSD and I don't think it is intended for hot-swapping, let alone flexibility of using it externally.
It looks like PCI-mini card, just like my Wi-Fi card in laptop.
@Boris_yo yes it does, not like the normal sata hole on the laptop?
@Psycogeek Sata hole? There is no way I can catch it up with 4 screws like I do with my SSD that has cover.
17:18
@Boris_yo Notice it is not 5V 12V either, hmm another clue. cause 3.3v is more like some of the power supplied on pci type slots also.
I better spend $5 more and get typical SSD than this PCB that is limited to being internal, taking PCI-mini slot on MB.
On the other hand, i am looking at a sata hard drive and that is about how many connection points exist on them.
@Psycogeek You know what is voltage on desktop and laptop SATA port?
@Psycogeek I see Foxconn
And these screws remind me those that are on my heatsink that are cross shaped.
17:26
big 3.5" SATA hard drive connection place. uses 5V and 12V, plus there is some other volt or signaling extra used for standy or something i havent got figured out yet.
@Psycogeek Are you trying to figure what each pass does? o.0
@Boris_yo i am trying to make a serial parallel interface :-) with 40 lines of sata serial data all working in parelell.
Remember how all this stuff changed over and again, I figured even if they had this new serial, they wouldnt stop there :-) nooo they would have to keep changing everything.
@Psycogeek And currently SATA does not work in parallel or something?
@Boris_yo the old stuff was parellel PATA, data down a bunch of lines at one time. the new stuff SATA is data down few lines, way bloody fast. that is as far as i get.
@Psycogeek If people want to replace DVD drive with HDD, they get caddy: http://www.newmodeus.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=2_3&products_id=395

But some small pathetic caddy for $47?
17:48
@Boris_yo time for a 3d printer, and SSD (because it would not have as much need for cooling).
Here it is 1/3rd way down en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SATA ""A third voltage is supplied, 3.3 V, in addition to the traditional 5 V and 12 V. However, few current disk drives use the 3.3 V line."" & ""Pin 11 can function for staggered spinup, activity indication, both, or nothing. It is an open collector signal, that may be pulled down by the connector or the drive. If pulled down at the connector ,the drive spins up as soon as power is applied. ""
- - And just down a little further is the Msata. which is what you showed in the picture for the laptop.
""Mini-SATA (abbreviated as mSATA), which is distinct from the micro connector,[30] was announced by the Serial ATA International Organization on September 21, 2009.[38] Applications include netbooks, laptops and other devices that require a solid-state drive in a small footprint.

The connector is similar in appearance to a PCI Express Mini Card interface,[39] and is electrically compatible; however, the data signals (TX±/RX± SATA, PETn0 PETp0 PERn0 PERp0 PCI Express) need a connection to the SATA host controller instead of the PCI Express host controller.""

when I look at my profile, it says visited 1086 days, 99 consecutive
but when I look at anybody elses profile, it doesn't say x consecutive
Is that something it only shows for your own profile?
actually this page doesn't show me chat.stackexchange.com/users/1256/barlop
Yes, ALL of us Americans are nothing more than crazy consumer zombies. Meanwhile in other countries, crazy and stupid shit totally unrelated never gets exploited like we do. It's better to say humanity is fucked up instead of going full retard and stereotyping the shit out of everything because of the fucking media...
I'm aware you didn't say "all" Americans, so this post isn't just for you, it's more for the mouth breathing idiots that seem to think generalizing and stereotyping is somehow 100% valid.

@Psycogeek , @JourneymanGeek superuser.com/q/682200/241659
@barlop correct. It only shows consecutive days for yourself.
In fact, it doesn't show days at all for anyone but yourself.
18:40
^^ What was that?
@Ash chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/12389779#12389779 oddly coincidental if it was the crystal that failed? when JMG posted about it just today?
@Boris_yo yes what was it? a bad paste. Cool its like flushing the toilet when your in the shower
@Psycogeek Ouch! My volume was 80% and wearing headphones hearing message notification bang was brain damaging... Sounds off*
@Psycogeek I didn't get this one.
@Boris_yo Thats ok, i hired a team of experts to explain it youtube.com/…
@Psycogeek This video should be on TV! Finally I have learned something from YouTube!
18:58
@Boris_yo . . . when the water pressure on the cold side of the water pipe set drops, the balance of hot and cold using a simple valve system is disrupted. the ammount of cold water is slightly reduced, while the hot water pressure is mostly retained. This results in a burst of high temperature water. And none of them stupid (and mostly worthless) anti-scalding , and temperature control valving systems fix it.
Ash

@Psycogeek I hope you are refering to superuser.com/q/678860/241659 and you know it wasn't a problem with crystal.
@Psycogeek I get it now.
@Ash that we know. this one though the one easy to replace part looks like a crystal. and seeing that tobias infar.be/index.php?/archives/… thinks that is the cause of many flash failures. It would be very easy to fix, if that was the item. I wonder if a frequency counter or something could check for that easily?
Ash
Ash
but I cant see the controller
USB controlller on it
@Psycogeek I have 3 faucet configuration. This lets me keep configured hot and cold water pressure and control it with middle faucet.
@Boris_yo now you just need an extra volume control on your headphones

19:10
@Psycogeek I read the article at infar.be/index.php?/archives/… just now.(before you mentioned about it) and i think that may be the reason (only after you mentioned it) .And I will be giving it a try.
@Ash do you know what frequency it is?
@Psycogeek EarForce vs GeForce... I thought former accelerates my hearing (whatever that means...)
@Boris_yo more like earfarce, but for what i could afford it is ok. I had to somehow have at least front to back surrouding sound, if i was to use it for games. But the way they do it is odd.
Ash
Ash
@Psycogeek its not written over the crystal.
but on PCB its written something like MRB2056 20111224
@Ash The electronics geeks might know what it probably is. They can doubling anf halving of a starting frequency (and other fractionals) and some crystals "set" the frequency of transmissions. so it could be the same as another cheap dongle you could buy, or it could be completly different.
19:19
@Psycogeek can you please explain what the conclusion is to that youtube video you linked to? 'cos I feel a bit odd watching a teenage boy in a shower giggling away talking gibberish.. I don't want anybody coming in.. if i'm watching that, and it's not enjoyable for me to watch either - thankfully - but it is a bit awkward to watch. 3 minutes 30 seconds without skipping is a long time to watch a boy taking a shower.. please summarize!
@Ash It would be good luck if that was the number of the part that belonged in that slot.
@Psycogeek ah I see you wrote " when the water pressure on the cold side of the water pipe set drops, the balance of hot and cold using a simple valve system is disrupted. the ammount of cold water is slightly reduced, while the hot water pressure is mostly retained. This results in a burst of high temperature water. And none of them stupid (and mostly worthless) anti-scalding , and temperature control valving systems fix it."
Makes a good prank I suppose
@barlop as for how stupid the video was , I guess the experts are just not appretiated for thier efforts anymore :-)
oh i'm sure teenage girls appreciate it, or maybe not 'cos they don't have money!

@JourneymanGeek that link was very informative and I wanted to thank you.
it lead me to tobias website :infar.be/index.php?/archives/…
!!urban even cool
19:28
@Ash No definition found for even cool
19:40
@Ash hmm the packaging might come in really handy too, because they actually listed the frequencies used on the packaging. the Rf corrier (carrier :-)
uk.reuters.com/article/2013/11/29/… ahh see i knew they would soon outlaw Black friday :-)
19:59
Black friday perks
getting that flash drive cheaper $2
Getting yourself that new TV $50
Getting shot and having a bullet wound that you can show all your friends $ Priceless
