@Boris_yo unless it is copper colored steel
Bob
Bob
@jou is that your pi?
@Bob: no, mine's ziptied to a USB hub ;p
@JourneymanGeek thats hilarious. needs a power supply stull and a usb host (internal) hard drive
@Psycogeek: you can power a pi off a properly jerryrigged PSU
Bob
Bob
@jou i wonder if your could hack it to stimulate acpi
And safely power off on power button press
02:18
@Bob: probably use the gpio pins and a custom shutdown script and a relay

break the spookey silence news : Boeing airliner crashes in Russian city of Kazan, 50 killed uk.reuters.com/article/2013/11/18/…
A Boeing 737 airliner crashed on Sunday in the Russian city of Kazan, killing all 50 people on board and spotlighting the poor safety record of regional airlines that ply internal routes across the world's largest nation.

The son of the president of the oil-rich province of Tatarstan and the regional head of the FSB intelligence service were named among those killed when the plane exploded in a ball of fire upon hitting the runway.
(no conspiracy here, planes always burst into a ball of fire in the movies)

2 hours later…
07:09
@Psycogeek No conspiracy eh?
@Boris_yo well it might be in america :-) where a 747 wouldnt leave the ground unless it had 200+ people on it.
(not sure about a 737 though)
@Psycogeek Shims are everywhere shims? American, Russian all made in China? stores.ebay.com/Computer-Repair-GoldPart-Store/…
@Boris_yo I dont know, copper is still used for pipes here rarely, so its not like electronics. But the copper you want doesnt get picked up by a magnet :-)
I have no idea how they make fake copper, but its out there, because it has showed up in some clone products.
Although getting fake "gold" via those fake gold small ingots would be much more embarassing. especially for the fools putting ferrous materials in them, when they could have used lead, and might get away with more.
07:28
@Psycogeek Wat They also fake copper? Dang, everything they can fake. Do they fake wate, air, fire too?
So real copper gets picked by magnet while fake doesn't?
Yes they have fake air now, they can put nitrogen in your tires , instead of air now :-)
I told them to put helium in :-)
@Boris_yo real copper does not get picked up by a magnet
With nitrogen in the tires it would put a serious crimp into 007s lifestyle :-)
99.6% feedback seller has... I am sure if he would sell fake, he wouldn't have such scores.
oops, scratch that, thats IS a good score at ebay
a 737 holds as few as 85 passengers as many as 215, depending on the model conversions, etc.
@Psycogeek So you suggest me to get copper from fallen aircraft?
"Why did aircraft crash?"
"I wanted some copper..."
Fake Fire ebay.com/itm/… And many others. they use a nice yellow silk, and hit it with a light and a blower, looks pretty good till you get close to it.
07:40
@Psycogeek It's not fake because item location is US
Fake water Uhh made in the US
@Psycogeek This is vaporized water. You use vapor to get water again.
@Boris_yo I wanted to go hiking one time, with Hydrogen baloons so i would be 1/2 weight. plus i needed power, so a fuel cell would turn the hydrogen into power, and give off water (which is nessisary to carry hiking) .
mabey they should think about that, when going into space and burning hydrogen with liquid oxygen, collect the leftovers for drinking water :-)
@Psycogeek I disagree. Its EXACTLY what it says on the tin
Bob
Bob
what the water
07:49
@JourneymanGeek ok ok, google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://daly-tribe.com/Humor/… there is some fake water
@Psycogeek I read that copper pieces 2cmx2cmx0.1cm need to be filed before applied for cooling? But if there is AC5 that fills even micro gaps, why file copper?
@Boris_yo depends how well it is machined. all these heatsinks we get are machined "enough" but different ones have different levels of perfection. copper could be clipped out with a machine, and have bad or thicker edges. you would just have to judge for yourself how good you want it.
Pre-testing anything would tell you how well it seats/lands/settles on what your doing. Any odd places where more goop is hanging out after a squish might indicate that it isnt as flat as desired. Because (as we already know) the goop is just supposed to fill the microscopic gaps, not the huge ones.
@Psycogeek Should I sandpaper/scratch copper piece for more uneven surface for thermal paste to fill gaps better?
@Boris_yo: you're buying a few right?
lap it! ;p
08:08
yup, sand it anyways to remove oxidations and coatings (put on to prevent oxidations) , polish it for fun :-) because polishing is unnessisary, and using wax is not nessisarily a good thermal conductor.
@JourneymanGeek I don't have vice or something to hold copper piece on so it won't move while I lap it.
@Psycogeek If there's already coating to prevent oxidations, why whould it need be polished?
@Boris_yo because the coating proably was not put on for thermal speed. you could rub in your TIM into it instead.
Remember one of the tricks of application of tim, is to rub it in deep into the surfaces first, then remove it. Being metal oxides that does a last polishing and fill some of the porus surfaces.
I like to do that with a microfiber polishing rag, but i have done it with paper towel too, weren't that different.
08:27
@Psycogeek I put on small pile of thermal paste and use credit card to rub it in and remove of what is left of thermal paste on surface level?
@Psycogeek I have not sandpaper but something looking similar but it is much more delicated grits on it. I think this paper was used for ceiling polishing?
@Boris_yo for the rub in, you use pressure (well i do) , you rub it in deep using your finger(s) for pressure, and a rag so you dont get finger goo on it. Human skin has oils and is acidic, so using just your body parts not so good.
@Psycogeek So credit card, rag + finger pressure?
@Boris_yo whatever works, i just think that the waterproof black paper is best, and 1000grit is about all that is nessisary to get it very flat .
@Boris_yo no credit cards , use a debit card, CC interest sucks , toss them out right now :-) I just rub it in like i was waxing a small something, put a dab of it on the surface or on the rag itself and rub it in.
The big pain in the butt is when your trying to flatten it (sanding), you cant do that just holding it up in your hands. It is better to have a very flat surface, and move the item around on that flat surface. Some people choose glass. I use an oak desk. when it comes to Power Tools, not many of the power tools are designed for fully flat sanding, they have padding underneath. Leaving the person doing all the work.
@Boris_yo naw, that might work for spreading, but it isnt going to deliver pressure for getting deep in the metals. Plus that wouldnt do any rubbing/polishing.
08:38
@Psycogeek I use debit card for spreading but how do I get deep into metals?
@Boris_yo In that scenario they are probably getting the rub in, done with the pick-up method. Like putting wax on a car poorly (instead of rubbing the wax in) and when rubbing the wax back off the car, it is getting rubbed in then.
@Psycogeek They call this tinting for break-in?
@Boris_yo whatever they want to call it , I find it can apply to any of the TIMs applications, because your getting a surface coating in, which might not happen otherwise.
without the little tiny extra pushed into the porus parts of the metals, when this is all assembled and it is very tight, then what little tim is there leeches into the metals, and then it gets dry faster. By already having any microscopic porosity filled, there is less leeaching from your final spread.
Putting it on stages:

1. Remove old thermal compound
2. Use sandpaper? Paper towel?
3. Blow air on chip and use alcohol to clean it out
4. Apply small pile of thermal paste and spread with debit card
5. Use rag to rub thermal paste using pressure
6. Wait 5 minutes until rubbed in compund settles in?
7. Apply small pile of thermal paste
8. Apply polished shim (should I use pressure here?)
9. Apply small pile of thermal paste on shim
10. Sandpaper heatsink, blow air on it and use alcohol to clean
Bob
Bob
the weather is scary
08:51
sure but dont use the word Sand :-) during the words for the final processes. sanding is done over ----> there. and then cleaned off. dont want no junk from the sanding or grit off the paper getting next to the final product.
@Psycogeek Ah so I should do sanding and cleaning before everything to streamline process?
@Bob That's why you stay at home more
@Boris_yo yes. but like anything I often have to go back to re-working it. just keep the idea of the 2 seperate, cause you have to re-clean after each sanding, but you will know that easy enough because it will be all on your hands.
@Psycogeek Is it safe for chip if I sand it? What about processor's die to sand?
@Boris_yo the chips seem to be perfect, the surface is perfectly flat. I have no idea beyond that, because i am not about to scratch it, so at most i will remove stuff off and around it, using paper towel and rags, and solvent and alcohol, and water and detergent sometimes.
The chip Lids (spreaders) that is different. things about them i dont understand why they have a texture, why they are not flat, and other stuff, that does not make much differance. But it does make me wonder what they were thinking with such textures.
Why does intel work things down to 22nanos :-) then slop a lid on it like it was made in china .
@Bob how close are you (in miles) to the coast/ocean in your domicile?
09:22
@Psycogeek You are talking about heat spreader (IHS) that looks like copper? I don't have any of that on 3 chips so I will use paper towel like you. Not sure why rags are to be used if there is paper towel.
@Boris_yo yes, it dont look like copper :-) untill you sand it down.
@Boris_yo: paper towels have lint
@JourneymanGeek That's why you use rag to remove lint?
yup thats why you use a rag to clean a heatsink
@JourneymanGeek Can I use Vodka to clean out after I am done?
09:24
@Boris_yo: better not to
@JourneymanGeek Because it is 40%?
vodka may be high proof, but there may be other things in it
its not about alcohol content
@JourneymanGeek I have deodorants...
@Boris_yo: NO
NO NO NO
!!no
everclear :-)
09:26
@JourneymanGeek I don't have rubbing or isopropyl alcos...
get some
@Psycogeek: everclear is marginally better, but I have the same concerns
but that is one expencive solvent , when a bottle of 99% isopropyl is not to costly.
also. never ever drink booze thats been used to clean a chip.
@JourneymanGeek Unfortunately I don't think I know of place for isopropyl alcohol...
@Boris_yo: I'd try a pharmasy
09:29
Have a big gash on your flesh, then people with Medical alcohol come out of the woodwork to pour it into it :-)
@Boris_yo oh come now you know that stuff is mostly water at $40 a bottle :-)
Not sure if this would work:
and it stinks too, look it says right on it Toilet
@Psycogeek Sometimes quite more than 40$..
'morning :)
09:32
@Overflowh and a good day to you.
I think @bob got swept up in a hurricane.
@Boris_yo: no
thats antiseptic
your chip does not have a cut
@JourneymanGeek I read that everything that has 70% Isopropanol is considered rubbing alcohol...
I am not expecting pharmacy to have alcohol that is not anticeptic.
@Boris_yo heck they sell 70% at the grocery store around here. the 91% which is close enough , might be at the grocery store, but surely is at our "drugstores" which are variety stores with pharmacy and sundry items.
Ehm.. why @Boris_yo you need a so strong alchool?
@Overflowh he has gone onto binge drinking since his Dell warrenty ran out :-)
09:43
@Psycogeek :D
@JourneymanGeek All isopropyls 91% here are anticeptics: google.co.il/…
@Boris_yo talk about conspiracy, its like the floride in the water .
@Psycogeek Oh.. @Boris_yo Here where I live one can buy alchool at 95% for "alimentary" use in the supermarket :D
How about this one?
Optical glasses wipes
@Boris_yo should clean ok, but what do you use to clean IT off? it has a detergant (surfacants) in it
09:59
@Psycogeek Damp rug to clean off detergent and then microfiber cloth to dry it?
anyone got a 27 inch 1440p display here?
@Boris_yo ok, couldn't be worse than methods I have had to use before when running out of the right stuff. But your asking about the right stuff :-) so nobody is going to recommend these "Might Make Do" in a pinch stuff.
I have this towel put it is not from paper. It is synthetic... It absorbs with more resistance and I wonder if it is lint-free.
@Boris_yo test it. you tell us.
lint and dog hair and dust , dont bother me untill its that final assembly moment, they make vaccume cleaners and dust cans, and compressors for that.
Then, I want to keel the dog. When I find his hair in the cpu socket :-) oh wait that was mine. . . nevermind.
these walmart.com/ip/Microtex-Microfiber-Polishing-Cloth/16817493 have become my most favorited microfiber rags. for final polishing and final cleaning. not too adsorbant, but very fine grain, and seem to stay lint free.
10:20
Ew, do i see people spreading thermal grease on a heatsink?
stick a dot in the middle and just let gravity + pressure do the work when you stick a heatsink on, you dont get it leakign out the sides :p
@Psycogeek Final polishing? You do 2-pass polishing?
@Hiroto come now this isnt porno :-) read the text, they are just "tinting" there.
ehehe
@Boris_yo Final, like for cleaning monitors, and the last of any polishing. not specific to computers.
Bob
Bob
@hiroto some guys tested a bunch, a cross was best
@psycogeek about 20km, but hornsby might be a bit further
@boris try a hardware shop
10:35
@Hiroto You forgot the rubbing part.
10:46
@Bob on the map hornsby is further "inland" than sydney. News says you have been getting wild thunderstorms for 2 days now? Miles away twitter.com/abcnews/status/401555543593988097/photo/1 Queensland hail
What is our audiophile's opinion about this one? @JourneymanGeek
11:00
Hey guys, stupid question time: my laptop has a 2.5" Toshiba HDD.. can I replace it with any other 2.5" HDD? This is the HDD of my laptop: storage.toshiba.eu/export/sites/toshiba-sdd/lib/library/…
@Overflowh: IF its sata, and the same thickjness or thinner
@Boris_yo: of what?
@JourneymanGeek Mmmh.. And how can I know if it's so? The hard disk I would buy is this: subito.it/informatica/…
@Overflowh: how old is the laptop?
if its within the last 5-7 years and isn't a subnotebook or some other very thin one, thats a good bet
@JourneymanGeek I don't know.. I bougth about 2 years and half ago.. There isn't a product date on the label..
hmm
good enough, definately sata
what's the model of your laptop?
11:06
@JourneymanGeek It's an HP Compaq Presario CQ62-220SL
yeah, that drive should fit
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek only two? sure feels like it's longer
well, jsut rain now
started with a massive thunderstorm
heh, I'm having the worst luck with networking this week
Bob
Bob
still pretty windy
@JourneymanGeek Yeah! It's an HDD from 2007, but for 20€ I think it's a good compromise..
11:08
one of our laptops dosen't see our router
@Overflowh: its very likely to work
Bob
Bob
@Overflowh open it up, and grab a ruler
@Bob A ruler? o.o
Bob
Bob
@Overflowh be very careful about second hand HDDs
@Bob: you can usually eyeball if its a 9mm drive or a 7mm drive
@JourneymanGeek I hope :)
Bob
Bob
11:09
they don't have the best life expectencies
@JourneymanGeek not if you're unfamiliar :P
@Bob Right..
Bob
Bob
@Overflowh yea, to measure
@Bob But mine it's completely gone..
new-old stock is usually fine
@Bob The measures should be on the datasheet
Bob
Bob
11:11
@Overflowh I mean to measure the old drive
@JourneymanGeek What is "new-old stock"?
@Overflowh: unused, old model
@Bob: reading the label and googling it makes more sense
@Bob Don't you trust the official datasheet? :P storage.toshiba.eu/export/sites/toshiba-sdd/lib/library/…
@JourneymanGeek Oh.. and there are places that sells those kind of things?
@Overflowh: I know this guy who knows this guy who knows this guy....
11:16
@Boris_yo: I think I have a friend who has that
he liked it
@JourneymanGeek O.o
@JourneymanGeek Review mentions echo if listened at the same time same channel while TV's speakers are on. This due to delay which might be because of Wi-Fi nature.
11:27
That seems... wierd
Bob
Bob
11:39
I'm glad I don't take the ferry...
better than what the Phillipines have been hit by, thankfully... poor guys
11:58
@Bob Someone on ferry took photo of this? Looks scary...
@Bob Me too. Ferrys , put 200+ tons of metal (cars and trucks) on a barge with an engine and half a roof, and hope to god no water comes in.
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Apparently a SMH photographer.
@Psycogeek Nah, these are smaller public transport ferries.
The large car ones... those are a bit more stable at least.
I thought they were mainly for tourists
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Hm. Maybe. Part of some people's daily commute, though.
@Bob you mean more like these things ? SanFrancisco Commuter ferry service for across the bay. Sort of a water based buss services.
oops these mojosail.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/… Helps to put the link in
Bob
Bob
12:12
@Psycogeek Yea, something like that.
They normally cross the harbour - presumably a bit shorter than getting a bus/train through the nearest bridge.
12:27
Again accepted change in services from misleading ISP call I am client of. I am thinking about complaining an quiting. WTF are they doing there.
@Boris_yo do like mothers tell their daughters... say NO
... or like lawyers and record all your calls
Bob
Bob
@Braiam Careful there.
Some countrieshave laws against recording what should be a private conversation.
Here in NSW I would have to inform the other party that it's being recorded.
The recording becomes inadmissable as evidence, at best, if you don't inform them. You could even be prosecuted for it.
@Bob of course you will have to follow the law, but at least you are protected ;)
Bob
Bob
@Braiam If the law states that you can't make the recording, then your recording is useless at best.
And could get you prosecuted, which is worse than nothing.
Make sure you check your local laws before recording anything!
@Bob Yes, sueing someone and getting sued too.
This okay for cleaning chip? Does antiseptic mention negates it as appropriate for cleaning chip?
Bob
Bob
12:39
...
generally, the problem is that it's only 70%
that could leave some more residue or take longer to dry
I would normally recommend at least 90%
a lot of hardware stores carry that
and hobby shops
"antiseptic" doesn't really mean anything in this context - concentrated alcohol is an antiseptic
@Bob Except here where people are clueless and approve everything that has alcohol in it.
Bob
Bob
it's unlikely that concentrated alcohols would be mixed with other antiseptics
@Boris_yo if it doesn't have a % listed don't use it
@Bob Concentrated alcohol = isopropyl?
@Boris_yo yes see it says so right on the pack "for external use only" you need one for internal use :-)
@Bob can be worse... mixed with water D:
Bob
Bob
12:41
70% is acceptable for some things (I'd use it to clean keyboards, etc., in a pinch)
but I'd never use <90% on the chips themselves if I could help it
recently bought a nice 250mL bottle though, so I have plenty
my 125mL bottle lasted well over a year
@Braiam water is not too bad
@Boris_yo the important question here is "what is the other 30%" ;)
Bob
Bob
it's other things that could leave residue that are worse
@Boris_yo no
!!define concentrated
isopropanol is a specific type of alcohol
isopropyl alcohol is another name
isopropyl is an alkyne and not an alcohol
@allquixotic Cavil died again :(
@ChatBotJohnCavil yo
he is ignoring us... bastard :(
Bob
Bob
!!info
I'll be back in ~1 hour
@Bob I can use 70% isopropyl and clean it with damp microfiber cloth?
Bob
Bob
12:44
if he's still dead, I'll go restart him then
@Boris_yo ...are you even reading what I'm saying?
I've said all I will on this matter. everythign else would be rephrasing what I've already said
which is very annoying
We can be assured of one thing, Cavil is miles away from becomming Self-aware :-)
12:56
You would think that they would sue the house inspector, when they discovered that the newly purchaced house had a "hole to hell" in the basement. Grevious oversite i would say. They could probably find a lawyer right there in the house too.
O_O
Distinguishing fake copper from real:
"Do what Galileo did when trying to judge real gold from fake gold. Measure for the mass and the volume of the "supposedly real" copper and then use those two values and find the density. Then go look up the actual density of copper and if the density you found is close to exactly the same density of that of real copper, then what you have is indeed copper."
13:23
@Boris_yo he tested real gold...
@Braiam Same applies to copper.
Dang, only 1 liter of 99.9% minimum order in my country in one of labs.
Any idea on how to tell a HP cp3525n printer to stop complaining about magenta toners and USE THE DAMN BLACK TONER TO PRINT BLACK TEXT?
Google is no help I can only find supply sellers =/
@ThatBrazilianGuy I don't know about yours but this is not possible on Brother MFC machine.
13:39
Meta's telling me nothing. Any chance someone can explain why this was put on hold?: superuser.com/questions/677293/…
REALLY HP? REALLY? I WANT TO PRINT BLACK TEXT AND I CAN'T BECAUSE MY MAGENTA TONER IS EMPTY?
@ThatBrazilianGuy just remove the color cartdrige...
@Braiam I did. Then it complains the magenta slot is empty.
@DanteTheEgregore the metas should have responded immeditly to your query, they generally are right under the bridge , and pop up 3 minutes after your last edit :-)
@DanteTheEgregore meta-Q and questions on the main site are only answered if someone knows the answer.
through truth be told, I don't know why it was closed as OT instead dupe...
13:46
@Braiam It just seems to be poor moderation. That being said, I've tried everything in the related questions already, I can understand some calling it a dupe, but I'd argue it's not.
did this not solve your question? superuser.com/a/598250/235569
but the other question ask about promotions not ads... so maybe not.... but that answer work for what you like
but again SU ways are alien to me...
I've tried several different URLs in the hosts file. The ad URLs never seem to be constant across the different answers I've read on various sites.
is not "url"'s but domain names....
only "ad.badboy.com"
Well, yeah.
also, most likely you will have to clear the dns cache...
