@Bob: no. the ideal mouse for me is a rounded block with buttons.
Anybody with I7 kinda stuff know what "Cpu Audio" refers to in the UEFI? Cpu SA audio , or what the SA refers to? Its in the bios with Enable/disable , and calling it cpu doesnt help IF it is the GPUs/cpu HD HDMI audio output thing. I cant very well test if it is that.
While we're on the topic of hardware, have a look at this piece of art:
Bob
Bob
@vedantchandra "two extra buttons" is on any mouse above the most basic, and I was already looking for one
in any case, that's why I mentioned XMBC - I don't need another set of drivers conflicting, so I'll stick with what works - and it works with any standard 5-button mouse
@vedantchandra: yanno, I have a bit of money coming in... ;p
but I can't think of any practical use for that for me :(
Well all Razer products essentially bypass traditional drivers an go straight to their Synapse software
00:12
and there's an even nicer version
Bob
Bob
@vedantchandra no thanks... -_-
@vedantchandra: its a non issue for me since I use a BW anyway
Bob
Bob
(also, there's no bypassing going on - it has to function as a standard HID, else you'd not have support in the BIOS)
the "Synapse software" is jsut a bunch of extra drivers loaded on top
@JourneymanGeek I suppose it's main use would be gaming, but you could map the keys to anything, video, photo editing, or whatever.
@vedantchandra: is that the orbweaver or the tartarus?
00:13
That's the Razer Nostromo
@vedantchandra: unless I could use the thumbstick as a mouse..
@vedantchandra: ahh
I want one of these
and the nostomo got replaced by the tartarus
The predecessor to the Orbweaver, but half the price. The main difference is that the orbweaver uses mechanical keys, so tactile feedback and a eargasmic clicking sound. Apart from that, the Nostromo fits the bill nicely.
lol
<3 mechanical keys
actually, I ended up swapping out both the desktop keyboards with blackwidows
@JourneymanGeek Yes, but the Nostromo is cheaper, still in some markets, and also about the same as the Tartarus. I just say Nostromo because it's what I have.
@vedantchandra: ooh
00:16
Oh yes, the blackwidows are probably the best keyboards out there now!
can you map the thumbstick to act as a mouse?
Oh, I'm not entirely convinced of that, but they're VERY easy to find
@JourneymanGeek I'll have to check on that, it's a great idea though!
This is Razer Synapse, the software used to map Razer hardware
oh, I am familiar with it
my desktop setup consists of a blackwidow, a kone xtd and a roccat apuri mouse bungee/powered USB hub
(and why do good powered usb hubs need to be so expensive :/)
@JourneymanGeek Sounds droolable! I'm curious a to what all functions do you use them for? Gaming?
@vedantchandra: not much gaming.
some, but I just tend to be a slight hardware snob
00:23
What do you use the macro keys for then?
same reason I have a nice pair of headphones, an external sound card (I'd be getting the new creative internal card for my desktop if I wasn't unsure if I would need to move overseas for work)
su accepts kinddle usage questions?
@vedantchandra: Reptitive tasks, especially during classwork. I also use it to launch software
and I disable my caps lock :)
for example, I have control f mapped to M5
Same with my Nostromo. Interesting fact, Razer Synapse can auto-switch between profiles depending on which application you're using. So you can have different profiles for Finder, Chrome, whatever games you play, and the profiles will be switched automatically!
totally useless when gaming, but useful everywhere else
00:26
@JourneymanGeek On my mouse, I have one of the side buttons mapped to CMD-Click in the Chrome profile, which simplifies opening multiple bookmarks and links in new tabs.
(also I need my mice programmable because I must have page up and page down mapped to keys under my scrollwheel)
What is the point of buying a new PC (desktop) when you can simply keep replacing the parts of your current computer?
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute Some parts require upgrades
Different processor sockets, for example
Buying ready made desktops isn't very useful though
If you're going to get a new one, custom build it
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: at some point, you've replaced everything ;p
Well, custom building a PC is quite expensive, a good PC that is.
00:38
Yeah, but then it lasts pretty long too
@RaghavSood: I find readymade full sized desktops a decent compromise if you want maintainability, but can't be arsed to spend the time building it
My desktop was once a dell 530 ;p
when your mobo doesn't support the bleeding edge: cpu sockets, I/O ports (usb, sata), memory modules, etc... is more easier (and cheap) just replacing the whole pc
I've always preferred building my own
lemme draw you a picture...
I have an old core 2 duo. Supports sata, so I can upgrade the HDD, and its got PCIe so I can fit in the graphics card.
I'm in awe that you can draw @JourneymanGeek... I should sell your paints for some bucks... everyone wants to see the creations of "a dog"
00:39
If it does though, I can't reuse the ram
or the motherboard
If I had something older, maybe not even that
and while cases last a long time, some design aspects change
so, you can go all grandfather's axe on your PC
Well if anyone wants to build a computer, here's an indicator of pretty much how far you can go: youtu.be/JtHDqdo5pR0
actually?
this is building a computer
I remember a magazine where they built a cheap system each 6 months for the office, the cheapest they went was 600
as is Bunny Huang's Novena.
@Braiam: Ars does that
I am not that knowledgeable on computer parts so it would be a risk for me to buy parts that I am not very familiar with and spend over $700 on it (and not being sure if they are even compatible) than just buying ready-made pc.
00:45
welp, dad is always the opposite of what everyone else is -- he's warm and the rest of us are freezing cold. so of course we all freeze so he isn't hot. time to crank up the bitcoin mining to heat my room
I assure you that when you build your first pc, you will feel good and your have no excuses like "my pc doesn't do this, darn"
already told them, if they want me to waste a kilowatt of energy instead of burning that nice efficient natural gas to heat my room, so be it
O_O
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: building PCs and picking parts isn't rocket science
@Braiam I am thinking about ordering them online from newegg.com or something.
00:47
and maybe half the channel are system builders. ;p
@JourneymanGeek Which processor, the hundreds of coolers, the companies that offer ram
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: for a first build? Go with a stock cooler ;p
upgrade later once you have everything done. In addition, third party coolers tend to be marked with what sockets they work with
yeah, Intel coolers don't sucked that bad as far I remember
i am literally a beginner. have no clue where to go in the first place to buy. what price is considered cheap.
etc.
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/07/… is a good start
as is the falcon/logical increments guide
00:53
$833.89?! holly crap
and that is 8gb ram and just 120gb hard disk?!
SSD
big difference
if you want cheaper, take a look at the logical increments guide
(IE, the most important part of building a system, and the second most fun bit is research)
wait, does this include, speakers, display, keyboard and mice and other stuff too?
Maybe I should wait for black friday to buy.
yeah for black friday or yeah for speakers and other stuff?
these days? I'd probably spread out my purchases.
it includes speakers and a keyboard/mouse combo which is usable
00:59
I already have speakers, monitor, mice and keyboard.
(I think I spent a little over a grand on the core of my system)
well, you can reuse those
there is no way im spending over a grand on the entire system, with everything, so definitely not just on the core parts.
but I got a very nice case, a HDD and a SSD (the latter was free), a core i7 and a gforce 660
hmm
ok, lets start with the obvious
what're you planning to use your PC for?
and what's your budget?
01:04
Max I could go for $750 but would like it lower.
Trying to build a heavy-duty PC in a sense that it doesn't run like a turtle.
inclusive of case?
I don't want people saying, "well this computer is designed for such heavy-duty use" no matter what I do.
I'll need a case too.
Little bit of gaming, programming, general applications (big ones) and just general surfing.
meh
ram is a LOT more expensive than I remember
and this is why I don't want to build a computer.
its too freakin expensive
Bob
Bob
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute too open-ended
01:12
@Bob what do you mean?
Bob
Bob
well, no matter what you buy, there will always be something that's too much for it
even more so if you want a reasonable budget
gaming - what kind of games?
programming - do you expect to need to compile large projects (e.g. Chromium, Firefox, Linux kernel, those massive ones) often?
well i play gta (old ones) and nfs every once in a while
@Bob No.
Bob
Bob
there are some games that won't run smoothly except on the very highest end graphics cards
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute then an i5 is likely enough
though an i7 is obviously better
Bob
Bob
most games don't require a particularly fast CPU; they're more graphics-intensive
01:15
I'm at 545 other than the video card and the PSU
Bob
Bob
some with more advanced physics, or simulations (Civ 5 with a complex world, apparently), will require a better CPU
an i5 and i7 are mostly the same, i7s just tend to have more cores
most applications aren't that well parallelised
compiling is one of those that are
video transcoding too
games aren't that big of a deal.
Bob
Bob
also, if yuo want to massively multitask (lots of CPU-intensive programs at the same time)
programming is limited to generally small stuff.
Bob
Bob
games in general want better GPUs, though older ones should be happy with a mid-range
01:17
applications like photoshop and a few other similar apps
Bob
Bob
I'd recommend, as a basic set, an i5 and 8 GB of RAM, with some room for expansion (e.g. slightly higher specced PSU)
was looking for 8gigs ram, but not required to have.
Bob
Bob
if you plan to have a lot of (or large) PS instances open, you might even want to go to 16 GB
the price of 4 => 8 GB RAM isn't that high, and would be a massive difference
for a desktop, I'd almost never recommend under 8 GB
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: 8 gig is a happy medium
I went with 16
Bob
Bob
the GPU tends to be the easiest to waste money on
though it's also the easiest to upgrade later as you require
01:20
what's the price diff. between 8gigs and 16? huge or minimum?
Bob
Bob
depends where you are, really
hrm. prices have gone up.
thats a quick and dirty setup I did
@Bob: yeah, thats what I said
Bob
Bob
it's about $80 for me now, it was about half that a few years ago
maybe they're gearing up for DDR4
(last generation, mid range card. Its bloody awesome tho)
@Bob: and phone ram
Bob
Bob
01:22
oh yea, @AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute, if you plan to run VMs go for an i7 with VT-x support
no way you can build an I7 on that budget tho
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek what was the budget?
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: the link above is a good starting point
~ 750
i have a i3 laptop that runs vm's fine...
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek on a closer look, I could still grab 8 GB of 1600MHz RAM for $50
@JourneymanGeek eh, definitely possible
01:24
I cut it SERIOUSLY close on my build design
Bob
Bob
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute until you try to do something demanding on the guest or the hsot (or both)
(less ram than I would have liked, went for best price per gig + reliability on storage over a SSD, last gen GPU)
You can go cheaper, but IMO hitachi makes the best drives on the market
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek An i7 would be ~50-100 more than an i5
not too bad, depending on your needs
i was looking for ssd's. Heard a lot of good about it and would like to try it. of course, if it kills the budget, then i'll take hdd
01:25
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: toshiba's the cheapest on pc price picker
Bob
Bob
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute depends how much space you need
Bob
Bob
SSDs are very expensive per GB
I actually normally recommend getting a larger HDD with a small (~32-64GB) SSD as a cache
you get almost the full performance boost of a SSD, with the space of a HDD
id prefer 200-300 gigs and then later get an additional 2nd hdd.
Bob
Bob
but its a bit more complicated to set up, and obviously more expensive than just getting a HDD by itself
Bob
Bob
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute that'll run you ~$200 for a SSD
I went with a 250gb ssd and a 3tb HDD
Bob
Bob
for the same price, you could get a 2-3 TB HDD + 64 GB cache

A: Cloning windows 7 fails

MDT GuyYou need to build reference images in VMs. I promise you, once you stop building reference images on physical hardware, 99% of all your problems go away. Did you even bother to sysprep this system?

ONE KILOREP!
01:31
@Bob I really don't think I need more than 1TB.
How much would the price drop with 1TB HDD and maybe 32GB SSD?
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: storage gets cheaper as it gets bigger.
Well yeah, but I must be paying extra money for 3 times the storage, right?
1TB + 32GB has to be cheaper than 3TB + 64GB
not 3x the money!
naturally
but I'd rather a 3tb drive than 1tb + some ssd
if it falls in budget, then ok.
3TB+32GB SSD. How much does that all come out as?
over $750?
why not pop in your build into pc parts picker and find out? ;p
01:34
Because I don't know which CPU's and motherboards to choose since it gives about hundreds of each
01:48
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: if you start with a processor, it'll cut it down to compatible motherboards
I'd go with asrock if I'm on a tight budget and gigabyte or asus otherwise
@JourneymanGeek Well what is the best one?
how did I miss The Bucket List (movie)??
Bob
Bob
02:06
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute a 32GB and 64GB SSD are about the same price
probably because there's really only one 32GB SSD, and that's an Intel one
@AGirlSaidMySmileIsCute: gigabyte builds their boards like a brick shithouse
I went with asus this time cause that generation of gigabyte boards had some VRM issues on overclocking, and I wanted to play it safe
all three are VERY solid brands I'd recommend wholeheartedly
(though, my system is suspiciously heavy on asus parts, so I may have a SLIGHT pro asus bias at this point of time)

@JourneymanGeek How about their quality control? And what about MSI motherboards?

so no idea

@JourneymanGeek Any thoughts on MSI made laptops?
@Boris_yo: for me, thinkpad or bust
@JourneymanGeek PEBKAC failure? That's user's failure. When did you fail @JourneymanGeek ?
@JourneymanGeek What's bust?
@Boris_yo: installed the processor wrongly and broke the motherboard
@JourneymanGeek Are you intoxicated?

I have to fill out a form for my car insurance and the PDF I got is secured, so I can't fill it out directly, I have to print it out and scan it again? wtf
don't they allow you to fill out??? Weird...
@Braiam I can insert images, but not text
O_O even weirder...
Yeah
Well, at least I can already put my signature in :P
This whole "I need your signature on this" thing is getting more ridiculous every day. All I'm doing is inserting a PNG into a PDF
you sure the thing isn't to be filled other way, no instructions or anything?
11:17
@Braiam Well, I'm supposed to print it out
But I refuse to do that :P
just write the values, do a screenshot, cut everything and paste it in the form :P
I would only need to insert a date next to my signature
The rest is already pre-filled based on information gathered via phone
Which is probably why they think they need to protect it

How can it be OEM partition if C:\ is my OEM partition? D:\ is system restore.
