Huzzah my freezing machine issue had nothing to do with the drive, turns out it was my PCI WiFi card that I happened to install at the same time as the new drive. My windows 8 copying approach was perfectly effective. Bum PCI card or windows has bum drivers for it or something
Probably drivers, Linux didn't seem to find issue
lol
thats odd
but one reason why a lot of folk swear by stripping down a system to troubleshoot it
wait, what have to do your WiFi card, with everything else?
drivers are drivers.
and they're often badly written ;p
ok, this is REALLY wierd
booted up an old compaq I have lying around. The black bot screen is red. and there's bits of pink everywhere
and... it shat itserlf
*boot
00:45
Yeah @Journey I had to do that, it's just you always imagine things should just work, so doing multiple changes at once shouldn't matter.
heh
/me wonders why he's even trying to work out if this hunk of garbage still works
oh right. I want to get it working just long enough to wipe it
though I guess I can take out the hard drive and just throw it out
Hey everyone :) I just got a RCA TV but the windows taskbar is ever so slightly clipped.
Does anyone know how I can underscan it a bit?
@VaughanHilts: RCA connections are "stupid" - so, it might be a bit tricky
(just for context cnet.com/laptops/hp-compaq-presario-2100/… is what I'm messing with)
Ah, that's unfortunate.
YES. YES. YEEEEEEESSS!
(just for context, you 'only' need ~600 votes to get that badge, I have about 1.5K votes. Just not enough proportion of question votes)
01:08
@Journey 1200 votes for me but my ratio is so far off of getting that badge.. I ponder it sometimes but I just don't see it ever happening
01:18
@JourneymanGeek you followed my advise after all, huh?
@JourneymanGeek finally! wooo
Welcome to the small club of only 107 people that have it
Amusing fact: I got the same badge exactly 2 years ago, on this day
ok, now the whole screen is yellow
now red
@JourneymanGeek that the darn cable... or adapter :P
lol
or everything.
I bet you are using VGA
01:30
no
laptop
I think the entire system is shot to hell
can't even seem to get into bios setup
arg! that's worse, something is loosy... and is not what you are thinking pervert D:
oh. I think the chipset might be failing
*brings the ceremonial hammer*
this will fix it definitively ;)
actually. TEMPTING
I need to remove the HDD tho
the x220 is dying? :(
01:33
oh no
this is an old compaq someone left behind
we had her fixed, now she's failing again
its a decade old system, and a cheap one so meh
@JourneymanGeek strip it down, then sell it to some subdeveloped country... that's what most big-shots do in my country...
ooh, screen fixed itself
well, that or its flashing green and black, rather than red and yellow.
still not getting into bios setup
it might be the hard drive. I hope it is.
man, show it the hammer, might get scared and actually work
01:36
lol
the boot sequence stops right after the hard drive is detected
ok, its the hard drive
that leaves us with the graphical corruption
and, it went red again
interestingly, I've not moved the screen at all
02:13
Wassup
02:54
@JourneymanGeek truely weird. "Did you try booting to linux" :-)
its doing it in the bios
and yes, I am waiting on xubuntu to download so I can try a liveusb
eww... just use a external monitor and stop whining..
lol
or throw it out
I mean, seriously, its an old celerion ;p
yeah, that's really old... I don't even remember "celerion" :O
lol
they still exist
They're basically intel's lowest end chips pre atom
though, it seems I mispelled it
too used to calling them celeries.
Celeron is a brand name given by Intel Corp. to a number of different IA-32 and x86-64 computer microprocessor models targeted at budget personal computers. Celeron processors can run all IA-32 computer programs, but their performance is often significantly lower when compared to similar CPUs with higher-priced Intel CPU brands. For example, the Celeron brand will often have less cache memory, or have advanced features purposely disabled. These missing features can have a variable impact on performance, but is often very substantial. While a few of the Celeron designs have achieved surpr...
03:05
I ought to swear that you are wrong... so I can't sleep D:
yeah, I remember some of them...
about the name, or these bloody things existing?
;p
err... when you wink and bring your tongue out is kinda scary.... so, please don't.
I'm a dog. I do this. Deal with it.
(not my canine alter ego.)
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Two torches now, no batteries :P
The second one did come with a AAA adaptor that works, though.
@JourneymanGeek If it's a decade old, it might be an analog connection.
And the green/blue pins might be damaged.
03:24
yeah, possible
lol
not even sure why I'm bothering
03:38
@JourneymanGeek Because you have no choice. It is broken it must be fixed.
2
It is a curse.
03:54
@Paul: true ;p
I just wanted to wipe the hard drive (which is faulty too btw)
@JourneymanGeek just take a darn towel and wipe it... geez!
@Braiam: oh, it keeps the system from booting sometimes
04:18
when will @JourneymanGeek offer this ^ kind of bounties?
04:31
!!yes
o0
is that even possible?
ok, trying a xubuntu boot
actually, lets try a memory test first
ok, its just borked as hell
it seems stuck on the xubuntu loader screen
hm, memtest throws an error.
blah
04:50
Wow, I nearly posted a dupe question. Then I saw the question had already been asked. By myself.
@JourneymanGeek So that is graphics, hard disk and memory all out for the count? I think it is time to give in.
Bob
Bob
@Paul Heh, at this point I'd just say the mobo is dead.
Unless the memory/HDD test bad when placed in a known good mobo, it's more likely that a single component failed (affecting test results for all others) than three separate components.
@Bob Yeah. Though it would still have to be a common thing, even with the motherboard. Like a voltage regulator maybe.
lol
I mean, memtest won't load ;p
Bob
Bob
@Paul Or a bad cap :P
@Bob Yeah. It is always a capacitor isn't it.
05:06
hm, this is wierder
xubuntu loaded
MOST of the screen looks ok
SOME of it looks off. but it looks like its by region not colour

5 hours later…
10:16
Anybody knows what is wrong with my printer? (left copy, right original)
Looks like it made two copies in one
You also purchased your product 1 minutes too late :(
10:33
@OliverSalzburg What?
@Boris_yo Should have bought it at 13:37
@OliverSalzburg Why?
I had original copy (right). Today I made copy of it (left).
10:50
@Boris_yo man, you are being made a fool of...
LEET written in LEET is 1337, l=1, E=3, T=7
@Braiam What was the JS extension error you posted the other day? I'm still concerned :P
I was not able to reproduce it anymore... the first time was while I was having problems with google openid
@Braiam Why does @OliverSalzburg do this to me?!
@Boris_yo: it is printing funny letters. Its obviously a virus
11:00
O_O
@JourneymanGeek It only does this in direct copy mode. From scanning and printing computer documents it's fine.
then check the darn lamp :/
hmm
check your darkness settings for copying
@JourneymanGeek It's 2 out of 5. Brightness.
well, I have no idea what the 'right' setting is, or even what settings you have
11:03
is probably that the copy/printing is different than the copying method
@Boris_yo If you don't know the meaning of 1337, then I can't explain it to you
It's kinda light Fight Club
@Braiam I wonder if copy and scan are different i.e when scanning it uses scanning part but when copying? I thought it scans document in feeder before it copies it.
@OliverSalzburg Must I watch movie first?
OMG... please, your innocence is... just too much....
btw, go and watch Fight Club!!
11:22
@Boris_yo thats simple, your put an already printed page through the printer again? the slight offset that occurs because nothing is perfect has printed a second layer on the first. please use new piece of paper and try again.
lol
funny you might say that
I've been meaning to
hell I read the book
So, I have to configure a router right now. The IP address is 192.168.1.1, accessible over HTTP only. But, it seems like, sometime in the past I already had another router connected to my laptop which would redirect to HTTPS and now that is cached in my browser...
That is so frustrating
You can enter http://192.168.1.1 as often as you want. You end up on https://192.168.1.1 and Chrome telling you that the page is not available
So to resolve it I have to clear my whole cache. Isn't there a better way?
@OliverSalzburg Ctrl + Enter... twice
Damn, now I have cleared my cache and can't try it :P But I'll remember it. This happens way too often for me anyway
you can also open the devtools and check "Deactivate cache while Devtools is open" (not the actual note...)
> I have a router that whenever it lost the connection it uses Permanently Moved (301) HTTP responses and literally I'm unable to access that link in Firefox. In Chrome/ium I can type the url then press Ctrl + Enter or opening the Developers Tool and disable the cache there in the options. here
11:36
local web server flaked out again
damnit
wireless dropped out again
if I had time, I'd move it to the pi
@JourneymanGeek did you buy a "starter pack" for your pi?
@Braiam Neat :)
@OliverSalzburg no is not... is darn annoying.. :(
@Braiam: I bought a case and a sd card
If I got another one I probably wouldn't get the case or the sd card
no adapter?
11:48
no
initially powered it off a phone adaptor
now I'm using a powered USB hub
.... that's far too complicated expensive... I should get the adapter along...
(which amusingly, costs about as much as a raspi)
@Psycogeek Nah. Why would I print twice on same page?
@Boris_yo because your "making copies" so it is only logical there might be copies ? Does the printer have a Duplexer?
Dat Star Citizen. @__@
12:01
instead of copying an already printed document... print the darn document twice, you agree with me, right @allquixotic?
@Braiam huh? o.o
@Psycogeek Doesn't
because your "making copies"
Oh noes. You are one of those who misspell "you are" 0.0
not misspelled, misused :-) your (y¢r, yôr, yor; yer when unstressed) adjective
The possessive form of you
Abbr. yr.

The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language,
@Psycogeek The possessive form of you
Oh noes. Now you are possessed...
stop being so wishy-washy... I am the real grammar dictator :(
12:09
shh... the Europeans gets somewhat offended
@OliverSalzburg Paradox?
@Boris_yo I don't know, I'm still processing it
and because NAZI is an abbreviation , it should be like this anyways N.A.Z.I.
@OliverSalzburg How much percentage complete?
12:13
as it stands for the National alliance of zionists iluminati
(but your not supposed to know that)
@Psycogeek Oh I didn't know...
@Psycogeek you're or you are :(
@Braiam lol again
Must be for fast typing
@Boris_yo Thats because it is always said wrong anyways, it is naziafm , national alliance of zionists illuminati and free masons.
(but only when you leave out the alien affiliations, which are hard to type with english.)
12:19
@Psycogeek Are you freemasonic?
@Boris_yo Yes, but stucco.
the stucco masons are not as predominent and powerfull as the brick masons.
@allquixotic that link made FF crash... :(
@Psycogeek Do you pray at stonehendge?
@Braiam Outta RAM
nah, flash... most likely...
I have over 2G free...
@Boris_yo no it is to far away for the pilgramige, which has to be done on hands and knees.
12:23
told you... flash:
@Psycogeek That's for dog
@Boris_yo oh now you tell me.
Does everybody in India speak english?
@Boris_yo flagged for spam.
@Boris_yo that page is not for Indians...
@Psycogeek not true :(
12:26
@Psycogeek You flag homepage of legit website for spam? What a twist!
@Boris_yo you dont know that a web site that is nothing but sales is spam, then you have lost it.
@Psycogeek Uh. Sales is not spam.
@Boris_yo it is all spam, the whole web is spam. it used to be a resource for usefull information.
@Psycogeek Until when?
@Boris_yo util it was destroyed by the nazi comertialisation leage of greedy bastards.
double the price, then give you 25% off, what a deal.
who gets to pay for all the ads? it comes out of the product. makes stuff crappy cheap, to save 50% then spend 50% of the money on ads.
Products nowdays are like a bag of weed. costs 25$ to grow it, sells to the end user for $400-$800 , to many hands in the POT :-)
does Steam make games? no steam collects money for selling games. Game costs $30 before steam, after steam game costs $69 where did the extra $30 go? (because there was inflation also so its not like it would be $30 still)
12:48
@Boris_yo see fight club asap !
It's one of the best movies ever made imo
@Gowtham Okay I saw it.
How was it ! :)
@Psycogeek Why Steam gets that much? It's like 133% commissions.
@Gowtham I liked the twist.
When the web first came out it was "now everybody will be on equal footing" & "little people can sell thier stuff direct" (and did). Instead (like anything) it is overtaken ||||>---- the information is squeezed into the billionare pipeline , and the little people are again at the mercy of those controlling . . . controlling the free web?
@Boris_yo No , as things go from hand to hand to hand, each tacking on thier precentages, you also have the problem of messy distributions, and ways to gain and maintain control. Power takes money, it is not free to takeover everything and control it. so we get to pay for that aspect too. Plus the othe aspect that the software is forced out and buggey. To get the (very tiny) Money from the powers that be, you need to put out Anything, then we pay to have it continually re-patched.
It was the inevitibility of life, and the rich get richer and the poor work for them. It was just believed (falsely) that the Web would change all that.
13:07
@Psycogeek Don't tell me it was prophecied in Geek's Bible.
Look at the kickstarter (Type) of website. It was going to be (originally) little hard working people spewing out new unique inovative products, by being infused with regular peoples monies. And what is it becomming? Big loaded with funds people, going on with big money supporting , trying to leech the people for funds they already have. Abusing the "starup" idea by using the advertising and the money to output products they have had Done now for 2 years.
@Psycogeek Greedy exploit what was supposed to be for average joes?
@Boris_yo Well no , the website just wants thier percentage :-) the idea that it could have been for starting up something , was what brings in the people. The Regular people, who want to support regular people. Eventually you have pre-made china products that are claiming "startup" because they are going to sell them painted 7 different ways. :-)
All good things are going to go to hell, for money. If i had done the startup website, to assist these little people, and some big people come along and want to put up thier apple Iphone 16 and i can leech 4% off the side of all first sale Iphone16s. What would i do? say "this was for real startups and your not a real startup" or take the money?
@Psycogeek You want good karma? Tell them it is not their place. You want bad karma? Accept and take a cut ;(
13:24
@Boris_yo Didnt the greeks have even bigger disparages of rich and poor already? people starving to death while people telling entertaining stories of the orgins of life living on the high hog, and having the people (basically) pray to them?
@Psycogeek I wrote Geek Bible. Not Greek Bible.
But people ruin the idea of kickstarters if they want to make bucks. But what do you say about people who offered radio controllable bug?
@Boris_yo Accept or?? isnt it possible for the people that control the information now, to "take out" a website because it does not do what they want? how many minor "tech news" stories and rumors are required to nuke a website out of existance?
> …I’m quite worried about your social intercourse, but what did that friend ask you of? I don’t want any favours like your dad’s, who brought a suspicious foreigner over with the words ‘Hide him for a while’. It’s too much of a pain…
O_O
@Psycogeek Bad PR? Why would there be somebody to do that?
13:37
@Boris_yo Competition. how hard would it be to knock out a site that competes with the big ones ? look how many bad things you can say about any of the large sites? The goliaths of the web, do all kinds of rotten things, and nobody flinches. But if a little guy that didnt have as many "employees" :-) and as many "advocates" and as many people with "investment money" (people who will say anything). Where is your power, if you have 3 people , vrses 3000 people telling lies?
The goliaths of the web, are thier own pyramid schemes , everyone who put a doller in (be it money or an effort made to put content on the site) , will want the pyramid to continue.
there is no way to buy just one key of the keyboard of Acer notebook_
?
the only option that i have is to buy the whole keyboard?
also, i have 2 options
@Boris_yo Can anyone explain to me how Facebook takes off and takes OVER completly, when there was ~10 other sites that did the exact same thing, just not exactally the same way. Do people even know the name of the other 10 sites that did the same thing before facebook dominated that particular social marketplace?

Which one should I buy?
@EinsteinsGrandson find a broken one? on e-bay there is often broken whole items that sell cheap. The problem for me has been that the item that breaks is always the same :-) For a single key for a keyboard a broken or dissasembled one might work?
13:51
Of course the Acer is better... i3 processor... 4GB memory... but Acer is the most shitty brand ... it always breaks down... Lenovo is much better... it is not IBM anymore... but still I believe it can last 7 to 10 years...
@Psycogeek MySpace?
I believe the Lenovo notebook is like 5-6 years old
that Acer is only 3 years old
I'd go with the core i3
the lenovo isn't too bad (I have the R series version of it still, set it up for my mom)
Bob
Bob
second-hand it's a toss-up how long it'll last, no matter what brand
but I'd definitely say the Acer one is better. easily.
The i3-370M was released 3rd quarter 2010
the T5600 was released August 2006
also now I am reading that Acer Aspire 5742g has overheating problems on GOOGLE..
maybe that is why the owner is selling it...
Bob

Four years is a massive difference, and that's not even considering the large jump from Core2 to Nehalem
Also, the Lenovo one likely was released with XP. Very big red flag, unless you are planning to install Win7/8 on it.
2013? Do not buy a machine with XP (unless you plan to replace the OS).
Extended support ends in a few months => newly discovered vulnerabilities will never be patched => very insecure OS
@Psycogeek Hi5, Myspace, Orkut...
