@allquixotic naw, just that SGI box ;p
@Mr.IDon'tCare Features
It's totally worth the extra 10k
@Boris_yo undo what? The failure to spell the name?
Its not free?
@OliverSalzburg ^
Me to my cat: "Nikki! Who's a kitty-girl?!"
Nikki: "umm... I have no idea what you just said? are you going to feed me now?"
Nice price
Probably that cheap because 2013 is out
@OliverSalzburg BUZZWORD BINGO CARD CAUGHT FIRE
Ultimate is free, according to that.
But it might be a trial or something.
00:23
@Mr.IDon'tCare Oh, right. The previous version was 13k, the new one is free!
Plot twist: It is a trial
@OliverSalzburg How long? 30 days?
@Mr.IDon'tCare Yeah, but I think you can extend it a couple times
Either way, don't get hooked on the features if you don't want to buy it :P
I am running Windows 8, and downloading the express edition only gives ability to create Windows Store apps, not anything else.
There are free versions, but they are neither the Pro nor the Ultimate one
@Mr.IDon'tCare There are different Express versions for different purposes
At least there used to be
sigh I am developing both Win Store and Desktop stuff, can't download two versions of the software though, as that would just get awkward.
00:28
@Mr.IDon'tCare I meant to convince teacher you made mistake.
@Mr.IDon'tCare I'm not really sure if they're mutually exclusive or if one installation would extend the other
@Boris_yo The only way you would be able to convince would be to show handwriting difference and hope the other guy's handwriting is not the same as yours.
@OliverSalzburg Dreamspark to the rescue!

If I want to use Readyboost, but have an SSD with Superfetch turned off, is it better to just leave it off and not worry about using?
04:05
gahhh I hate what I'm about to do. I need to go through every hard drive around my house that has had games on it and dig out all the save game folders so I can converge them all onto this machine now that it's upgraded enough to be my gaming rig. I wish every game did steam sync...
or better yet: why does windows not let you declare a nas drive for your user folder!!
I've seen tutorials that show you how to hack it together to work but gra I just wish at install time windows would be all "And where do you want your user folder to go?"
Bob
Bob
@JimmyHoffa actually, roaming profiles are a staple on large networks where one user may use multiple machines
there are heavy dependencies on some files in the profile, which is why remote locations aren't officially supported - it's a support nightmare when they start breaking
in particular, the user-local registry hives are stored in NTUSER.dat files
@Bob Yeah there's a roaming profile, but programs hardly ever use them, I wish the profile was roaming by default
Bob
Bob
roaming profiles help solve this by using a local copy that is then synchronised
save games and documents and such aren't placed in your roaming profile
Bob
Bob
@JimmyHoffa actually, documents are
04:17
@Bob is there a way I can get my shit set to roaming you're saying? Is this a part of the AD config or some such?
Bob
Bob
yea, it's normally a domain thing
I figure. I could dig up an old Windows Server 2008 MSDN subscriber download I have somewhere and make my machine a home DC O_O

great job MS, can't even redirect your support docs properly: support.microsoft.com/kb/2748329
@Bob haha, true though one thing no one can argue with: MSDN is one of the best damn developer support websites out there
Bob
Bob
@JimmyHoffa yup. MSDN and MDN, along with SO, are my favourite resources
say what you will of technet or support or any of MS' other portions, but MSDN is awesome.
Bob
Bob
sites like php.net make me want to tear my hair out
Python's docs are decent too, though they aren't categorised too well (too many long pages that have everything)
04:24
aye, MDN too... though for my part I probably read the jquery websites api references more than the straight JavaScript references anymore
JQuery just gives an abstraction for 95% of the things I ever do in javascript that's cleaner and clearer than the javascript defaults anymore. Though I still want to tear my ears off when people call JQuery a language which I've more than once heard.
Bob
Bob
@JimmyHoffa I'm working with (an old version of) Ext.js more, though I think we recently added JQuery.
And JQuery could be considered a language, I suppose. There are a lot of derivative languages with very minor changes.
JQuery does have its own somewhat-unique syntax that you'd not expect to see in JS. Then again, JS supports Unicode identifiers... eww.
what is this I don't even.

@Bob nah, it's not a language, it's just a monadic API, which results in such nice designable APIs that they can seem like a different language but that's like saying LINQ is not C# just because it's a nice monadic API that you don't use the way you would use traditional C# OOP APIs
It's just a library with an API, not a language
Bob
Bob
@jimmy linq isn't c#
there's linq for vb.net
and the query syntax is effectively a different language
04:47
The comprehensive syntax is something else altogether, LINQ itself is a .NET library, sorry didn't mean C#
either way I can implement LINQ in .NET, it's just a library of objects most of which have very natural obvious derivations
there are available open source implementations in .NET 2.0 because it's just .NET code
I've written similarly monadic APIs in C# for some things to implement the Either Arrow for gracefully handling failure with a declarative syntax
05:28
Think windows 8 would let me get away with DD my windows 8 install partition to another drive and it would happily boot on the other drive after that?
(understand that this windows 8 was installed on a machine without UEFI so I don't suspect it has any ties to such right now)
might work
but doing a backup and restore might work better
@JourneymanGeek Oh? Windows 8 has something like this that works good? Getting a faster drive in the mail shortly, figure I been setting up this new windows 8, may as well install to that... On the other hand, perhaps I just set my swap to it and instruct steam to migrate shit to it and that will do enough to drive my IO to it...
@JourneymanGeek or maybe a custom recimg
05:44
@JimmyHoffa: use "windows 7 backup"
I know, its stupid ;p
I just tend to do a fresh install since so much of my install process is automated these days
@JourneymanGeek Some day I'll set one of these up... I just want to migrate to a faster drive without losing my user and drivers and updates and crap that I've been tying altogether recently. Just now finished getting all the latest save games and prefs/settings from user profiles across 3 other machines onto just this one...

tom maclearyAs a parent i want to block all adult pictures found on facebook google etc. all i want is that the pictures don't get loaded in if and only if a word not suitable for a kid is found. Any software for windows , javascript and extension for chrome will do.

thats a odd question

en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Computer_voice well thats all good and well for star trek, but what about ME :-) we have had all this stuff in the computer now for 10+ years. About time the computer started doing just that.
I have specific events in the evnet log that pretty much tell me everything that is going on behind the scenes on the computer. when the net disconnects, when it runs out of resources and recovers etc. so its about time to translate them out of a back in the dark resses of the computer to the human.
Heck we even have animated lifelike human faces (simone style) that can look like they are communicating this information.
The possible implications include proper homework research. — MonkeyZeus 2 mins ago

@OliverSalzburg because it isnt 3d , it also is very few resources required to run it. a mere desktop toy, that could have been implemented to make the computer look "futurisitc" like to your firends :-)
Course around here they just say tell her to shut-up already :-) been there done that , hear it, its novel, but its repetitive. So in implementing the system sounds and event sounds, i have tried to have 10 different variations of the sounds that change.

The uncanny valley is a hypothesis in the field of human aesthetics which holds that when human features look and move almost, but not exactly, like natural human beings, it causes a response of among human observers. Examples can be found in the fields of robotics, 3D computer animation, and in medical fields such as burn reconstruction, infectious diseases, neurological conditions, and plastic surgery. The "valley" refers to the dip in a graph of the comfort level of humans as subjects move toward a healthy, natural human likeness described in a function of a subject's aesthetic accep...

> Pro accounts allow you to keep ten times the number of reports than free accounts can hold, per device. This gives you a much bigger chance of not losing any important evidence, as when you reach your storage limit for reports the older ones get deleted.

@Psycogeek What on earth is THAT?
@BenBrocka its not on earth, only on the computer :-)
Is that a virtual agent program or something? Those are always awful
@BenBrocka: apparently microsoft agent
14:18
Siri is quite possibly the most successful because she doesn't pretend to have a body. Also because she just steals from Wolfram alpha
@Bob: you're paying for the service, I'd guess
!!urban speedrun
@Boris_yo No definition found for speedrun
I'm not sure how much the "quiet" matters though, or how much performance I'm giving up (I usually opt for WD black)
@BenBrocka WD Greens are suckers?
14:20
@BenBrocka yup microsoft agents, only as auful as it has not been utalised, Siri has been around for eons, it took apple to make believe they invented it, to get it popularised.
Virtual agents as-implemented are usually very patronizing and/or creepy though
I don't even really like Siri, I prefer Google Now since it requires no interaction
Apparently some people have too much time on their hands that they wish to burn. Anyone heard of "Speed Run"? It's a new trend among hardcore gamers about setting a record for completing whole game in a fraction of real time it is supposed to take.
I usually just end up verbally abusing Siri
@Boris_yo Speedrunning's been around forever, but stuff like Twitch.tv has made it more popular as a spectator sport
I'd go crazy, myself, playing the same game that many times
I could play a good Mega Man game 5, 10 times through, but for speedrunning you're talking hundreds of times, not tens
14:23
@BenBrocka Check this out: speeddemosarchive.com/gamelist
@BenBrocka: google now decided my school is my workplace
@BenBrocka the big thing that holds AIs back is unlike a human they have limited responces. Humans hold in memory an ability to formulat 100+ responces to the same query.
simply cause it noticed my tablet moving from my home to school twice a week
@BenBrocka You also learn from speed runs by others and implement ideas to aid in improvement.
thats.. creepy.
14:23
@JourneymanGeek close enough
I wondered how it found my workplace, I assumed it's because I made "starred" palces in google maps for work and home, though
It also tells me time to home when I'm at friends houses, which is cool
When in CA for vacation it kept telling me how far away I was from "unknown place" though, that was odd
oh I didn't tell it where home was either
and it worked that out
creeeeeeepy
(lol, actually I kind of like it other than that)
Home probably is where you spend >9 hours a day or don't move for 8 hours (sleep)
@JourneymanGeek you can disable cards you don't like, but I don't find stuff like that creepy, it's useful. It tells me traffic conditions and stuff
also tells you when flights are leaving
(only if you have the flight info in Gmail though, same with shipping info)
@BenBrocka: oh, that its there is awesome
that it decides places are home/work automatically though
@BenBrocka I use greens in-mass for everything. they are slower, can respond slower, but seem (in my experience) to have a logner possible life because of the reduced rotate speeds. They are often like Cold even compared to a high speed drive doing the same thing.
Well that's the appeal of Google Now. You don't tell it things, it learns on it's own, provided enough info (gmail, GPS, search history)
14:27
Hello
@Mr.IDon'tCare Yo
Oh god. I just realized that Google Now is just a NSA-funded project at google to automatically create dossiers on the entire US citizenry.
@Mr.IDon'tCare Are you crying?
(as far as drives go, I go with hitachi, they're now WD owned, but their drives are apparently rock solid)
14:28
@Psycogeek What's the average write speed? I think my capture card maxes out at under 50Mbps so I don't think it'll be a big problem. Might slow down games a bit though...but I'm not sure I'll notice a difference over WD black since the worst part is loading quicksaves, and I Think that's random seek issues
@JourneymanGeek Hitachi Deskstars are the only drives I've ever had fail :/
Not sure I've ever used a Hitachi. I usually stick with WD. I like their easy to follow branding and 5 year warranty, good performance too
no, just a little down
Though Seagate had a verrrry cheap 4TB drive with surprising performance. But a 2 year warranty scared me away
Google services - everything that is "made for us" will be eventually used against us.
14:30
@DarthAndroid: thats odd. folks who buy a shitload of drives tend to swear by them
@BenBrocka: 2 year is standard now, almost
@DarthAndroid Seems unlikely given all the stuff they've done to try to release national security letters and stuff and their transparency report
@JourneymanGeek WD is still five last I checked
@JourneymanGeek Maybe I got multiple bad batches over 2 years, but 3/3 all of my hitatchis are dead now
I almost got that drive, but it uses a mix of new/exotic tech I wasn't comfortable with
@JourneymanGeek The 4 platters? Seems simple enough, even if new
It's not like, say, early SSDs where everything is "we don't know what we're doing but this costs $500"
@BenBrocka: SUPER dense data density, and slower platter speed.
14:31
4 segates and 7+ WDs are all still kicking around just fine
ended up going with a 3tb drive
How do you determine how many platters are in 1TB hard drive?
@BenBrocka The speed differecne is not that much, depends on the application. also at time i have adjusted the firmware to make them louder , and go to sleep less. (something that was not supposed to be, and not always possible) The high density helps keep them ok for speed in these big ones. I get average 100 speed. Plus i use them in raid0 (a big no no) and dont have a problem because the riad is more consumer type, so it handles consumer drives well.
@JourneymanGeek Someone ran 'em through benchmarks and they compared somewhat favorably to a WD black in many tests. Not better, but barely worse for the most part
@BenBrocka: speed is not much of an issue for my needs
14:32
@Boris_yo Most places don't list how many platters. Seagate only did on this one because it's the first to be X
@BenBrocka What is X?
@Psycogeek Oh yeah, the sleep thing concerned me a bit too. But the PC may be idle for long periods of time
I tend to spread out things over multiple drives - ssd for boot/os/most apps, big drive for longer term storage (which is backed up), and one more drive for transient storage (which contains a mirror of my torrentbox)
@Boris_yo X as in "insert thing here". They list 4 platters because they're the first to 4 platters for 4 TB, so it looks nice on a spec sheet
(trying to kill the transient storage drive ;p, it has bad sectors... still going suprisingly strong)
14:34
Yeah even my TV PC is going to have an SSD for OS and a TB for game/video storage
@BenBrocka Why not spread the risk and make it on 8 platters?
speaking of platters I've got a 10k 600gb sataIII drive arriving today to supplement my 7200 sataII 320gb drive.. I'm going to give the DD trick a shot with my windows 8 partition. I'll let y'all know if windows 8 can live with that.
My current desktop has 5 drives but one of those is supposed to be an external backup
I want to do a full backup/mirror of my storage drive, but the other desktop is flaky
@Boris_yo Speed and cost, less moving the head around
14:35
Off hand, does anybody recall if the file system information in NTFS embeds the partition size so to make it work I would need to make the partition I'm DDing to identical byte count in size as the one I'm DDing from?
(throw in an equal size drive, bitorrent sync mirror across)
I'm wagering not, but I know some file systems do
@JourneymanGeek I'll have to do that soon, was planning to just clone my current desktop when I build the new one
@BenBrocka so many other factors can effect things. like how it is set in windows power stuff, plus harping on it with SMART requests from speed fan and all. If i get it all correct I have had raid0 that sleeps as it should only. Again many complicated stuff that can effect things, not just one softwares, beteween Intel drivers, MS and all that stuff. it is hard to FACT what would happen in all machines.
...the new one will actually be my current one but in a different case and cheaper drives
14:38
@BenBrocka: the storage drive on my old box failed
but its also... well
My parts are only about a year old
I can't think of any component thats not flaky or was replaced recently
and its old school bios
Built this PC a year ago, going to upgrade the proc, GPU and motherboard (because I'm switching from AMD to intel)
Decided it made more sense to build a second desktop than to buy a "gaming" laptop for 2x the price and 1/2 the power
well, planning on replacing proc/ram/motherboard
Was also going to finally use that Antec 300 case I have in storage until I saw a HAF case on sale for $40 on newegg...sorry antec
14:40
not sure on the video card (its got a nvidia gforce 450, the passively cooled model)
but its mostly used as a web-box
passively cooled dedicated graphics?!
yup
ddr3 tho
I don't even know what ram type my graphics card is. 6950 though
@BenBrocka So basically you're going to build a new computer...
Jealous of the PS4's 8GB of GDDR5 though
14:42
most of it is gddr of some flavour
@JimmyHoffa Well, I'm upgrading my current box and building a second box out of (most of) the old guts
it replaced a gforce 8800
@BenBrocka I just did this except for building the second box... Really not certain why to bother doing that so I haven't bought the case for it yet, but I could do it...
'Morning' (as in: I just switched on my computer, thus it is morning).
14:44
@BenBrocka: if I do do the rebuild. I'm debating throwing out the old box
but its 'good enough'
I'm not entirely sure what I'll do with the second box, but it'll be nice to have a backup, and in theory I could use it as a "console" for my TV and/or use it to passively record from my capture card
My current box is a HAF X so I'm defiinitely keeping it
Whole reason I bought it was because I figured it would outlive the components in it
HAFs are nice
Wow. Mass Effect on sale. €3.24 for the first one.
/me is a bit of a cosair fanboy as far as cases go
I love me some Cooler Master
14:46
@Hennes I thought it was still last night until I got my coffee
that system is currently running rather warm ;p
Centurion 5. Hmm, named after 5 large bays ?
no idea ;p
I also got one of the midtower HAF models for the new box
BTW thanks whoever corrected me about the bios temps, RealTemp my machine idles at 40c
14:47
Cooler Master combined classic and modern design in the Centurion 5 with aluminum built, it can accommodates ATX and Micro-ATX motherboards and five 5.25” drives bays and one 3.5” external bay which provides more room than most people would ever use.
that makes more sense
I agree with the 'than most people would ever use'.
Not sure about the users on this channel though.
lol
I don't use 5.25 bays much
5.25 bays aren't that useful anymore
Going into the BIOS and monitoring temperatures was my old way of testing before prime95
14:48
I currently use 4 of the 6 bays on my cosair case for drives
Slip a 3.5 adapter in 'em or a memory card reader or fan controller or something
amusingly 3 of them are 2.5 inch drives
(and one more to store screws)
I have a DVD reader that's no longer plugged in, a fan controller and a 3.5" hotswap bay that came in the case
But without 5.25" bays, where are you going to put your 9 GB high voltage differential SCSI drives ?
RIP Scuzzy, best interface name
14:49
How about SASI ?
I kinda like TWAIN
Mark! My scanner does not work!
For those who no longer remember SASI: link
@JimmyHoffa what is DD? Direct Drive, Disk direct, Dynamic Disk, Drobo Disk, Deleting Disks, Dos Disk . . .
@Hennes help I'm stuck in 1995
Double density and the unix reblocker are my first thoughts
Heh, back when I still had an @tue address
14:51
Drive Destroyer!
oh must be a linux thing :-0
its a tool for making a image of a drive
thats a CD :-) clone disk .
Am I correct in assuming i7-4770K is the only processor worth getting for a brand-new intel system right now?
One computer. one 200 (!) Watt PSU, four SCSI hostadaptors, one narrow only (used for swap on a quamtum LPS52S, and two Quantum LPS 240S drives), one wide SCSI only (several 4.5 GB drives from a mainframe. After lowleveling to 512 bytes/sector). One HVD (going to a second hand Quantum Atlas 9GB 3.5 inch double height drive). One LVD (going to a Quantum viking 4.5 GB drive)
14:53
I'm slightly tempted by 6 core but if I get ivy/sandy bridge then my motherboard won't be ready for a new proc
Now that takes me back in time
depends on whether you want to overclock.
@BenBrocka You are completely wrong.
@BenBrocka there are lots of people saving $100 getting lower rated hasewell chips. none of them seem to be turning them magically into the high end one. Like by trying to overclock them to the same level as.
@Psycogeek sorry, dd :P
14:54
4 core is usually enough for most things. I got the 3770 (non K)
@JourneymanGeek +1 on the "it depends on"
@JourneymanGeek Overclocking is probably a yes, and it's a high end machine so I don't think I'll be getting less than i7
@Psycogeek Only the Ks are even overclockable right?
@BenBrocka: well, properly
the other chips allow limited overclocking
that said, the current chips don't overclock too well, least after SB
@BenBrocka I believe that information is false. the K is the only one you can play around with the multiplyer thing. with a OC motherboard i think you can take a non-K and slap the thing up to 125% with the CPU strap. There isnt enough people trying that trick, so i opted for the safety of the fully adjustable one, and $30 more moeny at the time.
Oh, the future just nabbed me.
On a 8 bit SCSI-bus this increases the *theoretical* maximum speed from 5MB/s to 10MB/s. I know of no single drive that reaches these speeds.
14:57
@Psycogeek I currently just use Asrock's % based overclocking. I just did 10% in my current rig because I haven't felt like fussing with it much
Yeah $30 is nothing for ease of use/safety
@JimmyHoffa Oh like that helps, it was dd not DD :-p
Just seems like for what I want anything without a K is'nt ideal and I might as well get an i7 since I'm going high end gaming/multimedia processing
