@JourneymanGeek why the heck there is a tamil tag?!
@Braiam: most of the questions seem to involve specific OS or software localisation
still... what that change in the answers given? They wouldn't need an answer in Tamil... I would burminate it if I could...
@Braiam it could be a case of needing lang pack revolving around a language or dialect
00:27

Q: Tamil tag... why?

BraiamContinuing my rant on chat, let me rephrase why I don't think is needed, addressing each question problem: Is about a word processor, not something that critically depends of the language (I'm expecting the installation and functionality goes the same in english, spanish, french, indu and tamil...

00:42
@Braiam: actually, there's uniquely tamil wordprocessors ;p
well, a tag for 1! ONE question... *Windows jumps off*
mainly cause there's a few different ways to handle typing in tamil, from transliteration (like the old adami, and the google transliteration IME) to 2-3 different keyboard layouts
@Braiam: its a software req ;p
man, still 1 little tag... also the word "tamil" was included in the question itself :/
@JourneymanGeek It was closed put on hold ;D
00:45
I mean, its the one case where the question critically depends on the language
@OliverSalzburg: 'on hold' just seems like a copout ;p
I guess I should just delete it
But it seemed like it could be reworded into a proper question
I can't believe this shit
I have to squat in front of my desk because my cat is holding my chair hostage
I think @Journey could fix that problem... *wink*
I could fix this problem, but the cat looks so cute sleeping ^^
get another chair?
00:52
that's overkill, no...?
I probably should
just use the desktop as laptop... your back will kill you, and your wife too, but hey you just made a desktop mobile O.o
I should be asleep already anyway. That's the only reason the cat got hold of my chair in the first place
But I've taken it back now!
(╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ ?
@OliverSalzburg well done, never bow down to feline oppression!
00:57
@terdon Well, the feline oppression is now lying on my lap getting belly rubs
Sell out!
:)
oh man, i cant believe my brain did that. For a while i was thinking that Tamil was one of them goofy named linux programs :-)
lol
@Psycogeek: I think at least 3 RA regulars speak it ;)
hmm
If I upgraded from windows 7 to 8, I'd need to reinstall everything, right?
Deppends...
if windows will troll you or not... :(
01:09
lol
@JourneymanGeek "its a language" duuuh so is it like C assembler or cobal :-)
trying to decide on whether to do it with my laptop ;p
I have a copy of 8.1 off school, but I just installed stuff I can't be arsed to reinstall
@JourneymanGeek is it uefi based laptop?
yeah
older tho, so I probably won't get secureboot
well then is not to old.
01:18
yeah 2-3 years
a person could attempt to apply the "easy transfer' type methods (move your settings and programs), just to see what kind of disaster that makes.
Make an image (clone) of where you are now, store that far away from the system, soes you can get back to it. Run that settings and programs wizzards stuff, and jam that onto a flash chunk or something.
Install the 8 all clean and pretty to play with. Image That too, so you can get back there. then test the destroy your settings and program transfer.
gives you 2 paths of return.
you think the dog can bury all those image in the yard, do you?

You don't say
yes, I would say just a bit larger. This is the "hover" info from the exact same folder
03:15
I've got what's probably going to sound like a noob question – does anyone know how to run a BIOS test off of Webmin control panel? I was told I needed to do that to get a confirmed read on the amount of real memory on my server.
03:32
I have no idea how to - who told you to do it?
03:53
If your a 100% Breaking Bad fan check this fallon video youtube.com/… If your not, then don't bother.
04:08
I'm at work but I do like breaking bad
it's a risky click
it is not short
Is it just me, or is SU getting flooded with more and more questions that make zero sense due to broken English and poorly constructed thoughts?
@kobaltz well any other question is closed or duplicate now :-) There are some amazing interpreters who edit questions into readable language at times.
04:38
@kobaltz sometimes English is just plain confusing
"Need to Column C to equal the text in Column G based on the match the value in Column B"
@A.Rex Hey there! You're pretty special, aren't you? :)
Ahoy.
I'm looking for some VPS service with a fairly basic requirement. I would like to be able to easily configure arbitrarily-many email addresses. In other words, I don't want to pay by the address and I don't want to deal with configuring a mailserver myself. Any suggestions?
@jflory7: yoy basically can't
@A.Rex: to recieve mail?
(since thats pretty trivial - my domain registar has it as an option)
04:53
Yes, receive only.
Or ... mostly.
@A.Rex: see if your registar does mail redirection for recieving
you don't need a vps for that
I wanted VPS for everything else: a website, space, etc.
Hmm, let's pick a random registrar.
Okay, NameCheap for example has email forwarding, with say a catch-all that I forward elsewhere and then manage.
What I would really like, essentially, is to be able to be able to receive email at and to be able to send email from lots of different addresses, like [email protected], [email protected], etc.
So I would like to send email, too ... :/
lol
I use namecheap
its the "not wanting to configure stuff" part that gets me
No, it's only not wanting to configure a mailserver.
Only that part. I'm happy writing lots of scripts, etc., to automate things, manage things, etc.
But I don't really want to dig around with postfix or sendmail or so forth.
(If I can avoid it.)
So, as a final summary of what I would like is ... I would like to be able to receive email at [email protected], [email protected], etc. I'm okay with -- and in fact would want -- all of them to go to the same address. So forwarding solves this just fine.
lol
I can link you a good, step by step guide ;p
05:04
I would also like to be able to send email from these same addresses. I'm more than willing to write a program that helps me out with making sure it goes out with the right address.
oh, you can probably just set up sendmail to send emails from arbitrary addresses I think
and then set up stuff like spf so they don't get marked as spam
I know I can do this if I run my own mailserver ....
I don't want all the pain involved with that one part.
Having searched a little more online it seems that there are plenty of solutions to my problem.
For the sake of the chat archive, dedicated email hosting -- like from SiteGround -- seems like it could do. Or some VPS providers -- like HostGator -- don't charge by address.
Bob
Bob
you can and as any address if you're running your own smtp server
and the mall forwarding can be completely independent
thats the thing here, he dosen't want to run his own mail exchange server
Bob
Bob
you will need to configure a few things to prevent being tossed into spam though
@jou doesn't have to run a receiving server
05:15
@Bob: yeah, hence me mentioning letting the registar handle it
Bob
Bob
outgoing is enough, the registrar can handle incoming forwarding
I'm just echoing you then :P
05:34
But outgoing is the hard half.
I have to deal with all the troubles of having servers accept my mail.
SPF, etc. If I'm doing this from a VPS, then
the entire IP block might have already been banned. Like if I'm on AWS or something.
I'm headed to bed.
Thanks to you both for your comments.
If you would like to leave any more, I'll happily read them in the morning.
Thanks again and g'night (or, well, whatever time of day it is).
05:59
Does anybody have experience with relatively inexpensive monitor stands and have any recommendations?
@DustyCampbell Welcome to Root Access chat for Super Users! Please don't ask if you can ask or if anyone's around; just ask your question, and if anyone's free and interested they'll help.

apple is so full of themselves. They patent specific ideas that the base idea had been around for 10-20 Years. While they may have made a chip and code to function that idea for a battery, they did not invent at all, the techniques. So if some other company that makes thier own chip to do the same basic tasks , the same way even. Apple has no patent claim. any other manufacture of a product could make up thier own chip, and use the same technique.
-Plus apple was not first on the battery tech they claim they are first on. Again this stuff has been done in many areas, and on many workbenches for ages. But apple aparentally oblivious to the rest of the world reads about it in the forum, and suddenly they are the first ones to have ever done it.
--If a patent lawsuit of the battery tech apple uses restricts or forces a paymet to apple for this tech, it is more Outright Fraud, and IP theft by apple themselves, than it is apple having been the one with patent right to it.
--The cool thing is when it gets into court , and technological facts , and 5000+ pages of data supplied on the web for both free and for pay , will not mater. What will matter is some legal mumbo jumbo, what the lawyers get paid, and the fact that the courtroom will be filled with idiots about the subjects.
-- apple or samsung , and the rest of them should have the original more "open sourced" information people all gang up on them in the courtroom, and run thier stupid lawsuits out of town. Because much of the information being patented trails back to open discussions and ideas . Basically these coporations are trying to charge people money, for open sourced data. I wouldnt be surprised if they werent cross lawsuiting eachother to lock in IP that is open.
-- who later can argue that Fred Lignquest (fictious) working at a small battery plant, hold the origin of 3million doller IP (intelectual propety) When the courts have Locked in a corporation as the owner.
lets see how many lawyers Fred can afford :-)
10:14
@Psycogeek you hit the nail on the head. A lot of their stuff is lifted. And iOS 7?
one word: android
Its got so many design elements from android!
@vedantchandra and windows looks more and more like apple every day. Given these coporate thefts , someday a Button on a web page is going to cost the owner of the web page .12cents each button for each year
2
Intel makes a chip, tells everyone how to use it, point being to sell a chip. Some other fool comes along and applies the information intel provides to "apply the chip" and suddenly they can lock that out?
Testing out a new bot, use some commands with ! ! please?
!! there is a bot in here?
@Psycogeek Not a chance
!! is it a smart bot?
10:27
@Psycogeek Certainly
okay wow, issues
someone is gonna get some treatment.
thanks anyways! Back to the drawing board....
Damn drone attack :-)
Trying the bot again with fixes, commands?
!! urban Fixed
@Psycogeek fixed On a forum, it is changing what another poster said in their own quote brackets and then writing 'fixed' below it. It started out as simply correcting another poster's errors, but now it's all about tweaking their quote to mock them.
Bob
Bob
@vedantchandra actually, a lot of the styling is from WP as well :P
Okay thanks for the help guys, I have the data I need to start fixing the damn bot :P
10:54
heh, someone found a typo in a made up word ;p
that it is ;p
and rather specialised.
They're custom made by someone on Etsy
Humm... someone just sent me a login for an FTP they've set up for me. I've accidentally missed a character in the hostname (ftp.something instead of ftp2.something) and was still able to log in
I wonder if it would be wrong to mirror the contents for "research"
11:18
@OliverSalzburg there is no moral quandry if the person specifically left it open to any guests that pop by. some people do. Ask em, drop a note in saying "hey i just hacked into your FTP, you mind if i download it all"?
Quite the hack if you use login credentials they sent you ;P
@OliverSalzburg I thought you were relaying that you landed on a different one.
@Psycogeek Yeah, a different server on their domain
@OliverSalzburg same person though who gave you access? so you could ask em?
@OliverSalzburg You are doing it wrong.
Bob
Bob
11:24
@Psycogeek the entire thing is a moral issue
just because someone left it open does not mean you should use that to injure them
moreso if they're your client and trusted you with the login credentials
@Bob you mean like if sombody give you the key to thier house, you shouldnt rifle through thier dvd collection, and use thier computer to Up-load the dvds to your computer?
what if you put them back really nicely :-)
mabey dusted a bit around the house , clean a toilet or 2.
12:07
@Psycogeek Since Jobs is no more, people blame Apple for stopping to innovate and say they just rehash.
well if either of them stopped "innovating" there still might be people would pay them to fix the 18,000 bugs ?
might be good to take a step back, clean optimize and test the code
@Psycogeek You mean if they didn't innovate, they then would not have funding to fix bugs?
@Psycogeek I assume you owned 8-bit or 16-bit console in 90s?
@Boris_yo remember VHS , instead of improving on the quality, they chose to add massive features. beta was far superior. in the US VHS won that war
12:23
Video2000 was way better
@Boris_yo I may have had an Atari like thing, and an original pong.
@OliverSalzburg and I don't even know what video2000 was (or is). lazer disk was rather cool too, but it could not be "burned" at that time.
@Psycogeek It was just another tape format
@Psycogeek I remember that due to early implementation, VHS standard was more popular than CDs or any other media type that came after VHS. VHS weren't perfectionists and this is why they were able to aquire such big popularity.
@Boris_yo right, pump out a huge features list, even if 1/4th of it is useless, 1/4th of it the people will never use , and 1/4th of it ruins the product. all that is left to do is spend 4/1ths selling it.
@Psycogeek Are you aware of the fact that consoles were degrading old TVs picture quality and eventually broke screen tube in them? You started to experience delay between powering on TV and screen display showing picture at first and then after time you experienced jumping display and finally suddenly your TV worked but you could not see anything on display.
@Psycogeek Did you just coin "1/4 rule"?
12:32
@Boris_yo well they did not use the same Sync paramaters, so the tv did bend to the lines it was being fed. it was within the ability of the televisions.
@Boris_yo no that was the 3/4rule, 3/4s of the crap in a program only 1/4 of the peoples use. the rest of us have to suffer through it??
I lied again. I clicked the [I Agree] button
@Psycogeek What do you mean by spending 4/1 to sell it? Like spending full amount just to sell to 1/4 people?
@Psycogeek Also static images that were so common in games on consoles caused "burn-in" effect: answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100520220658AAsXwZd
12:48
If you make something really good, people will spam for you. If you make a buggy pile of junk, you have to spend a lot of money jamming it down peoples throats.
Perfect example are those "fix your pc" and "speed up your pc" and other optimizing crap that can do more harm that good. There are very few good packages of that sort. But lots of adds for the lesser sort.
@Psycogeek So VHS in this case is something that you would have to force down people's throat? I am not sure because at VHS age, there was nothing else.
Bob
Bob
oh yea. @JourneymanGeek gonna stop messing around with non-FP inks now :P
the FP ink flows much better than the printer ink, and feathers less. my ballpoint ran out mid-test today, so first FP use in test. worked well enough...
@Boris_yo BETA was better, VHS had a big feature list, and was crammed down peoples throats. Hmm mabey nobody wanted to be a beta tester :-)
13:24
captain. Photon torpedo's killed that death star, but the review question is still on or starboard bow!
13:50
@Bob: lol, that was my experience too
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek the shitty printer ink, or pen running out? :P
pen-testing ?
14:09
That is a map of all of the friendships formed on Facebook across the world.
14:21
@Bob: the shitty printer ink being shitty
and thats on a vpen, which is notoriously not picky about ink
lo
hm, apparently someone moved one of our wireless antennae on the router from --- to | and it totally messed up my wireless signal
@jokerdino hi donkey
14:35
yo!
@JourneymanGeek this is called polarization
why do you think insects that possess antennae always wave them around in random directions... they're trying to get a better WiFi signal so they can download insect pron
@allquixotic: I don't get why anyone moved one of the antennae just so they are both | |
If I moved it, I would have had a reason. if I didn't, the bloody thing worked and needed to be left alone.
@JourneymanGeek because potatoes
people are random
its a pain in the ass to troubleshoot too ;p
only reason I worked out it was the router cause the connection on both my systems sucked, and I tried turning the router off and on again
@jokerdino yoyo
14:42
@Gowtham how's life, girls and booze?
@jokerdino life's boring, girls are complex and I can't drink booze.
4
In fact I am soo bored by college that I looking for a hobby ;p
oh you
14:44
So what are you doing ?
@Gowtham planning a startup
Include me in it yo :P I am bored ;p
oh sure!
i would gladly let you know when i finalize the idea.
ok :)
I am soo bored that I actually stared netbeans to finish off some real old projects of mine ;p
lol
There's a python class coming up on Coursera. I believe it's the same one done last year.
14:47
don't learn python; learn C# or Java
2
it'll make you a better programmer
O_O
I have a minimal grasp of Java.
the language itself isn't that difficult, but learning the APIs will build a lot of computer science knowledge that you can apply later
Why is it that I shouldn't learn Python?
learn the collections API, the socket API, the 2D graphics API, and the threading/synchronization API of Java, and you'll be at a junior-level (3rd year) computer science student as far as programming capability
Can I not choose to learn them all?
14:50
@jokerdino because python turns your brain to mush and discourages thinking methodically about programming
only use python if you have 1 day (or less) to get something done, and you don't intend to continue maintaining/enhancing the code much or at all after it's implemented
for anything that you intend to keep around and evolve continually to provide more features, improve performance, etc. and make it "generally useful", you really need to use Java, C#, maybe Ruby, or, depending on how performance-sensitive you are, C++/C
@allquixotic I know all that
I can't get myself to like Ruby/Python after learning java
Though I have only written simple threaded programs and a pong game using the 2d stuff
@Gowtham oh? so you're familiar with stuff like using an ArrayBlockingQueue for a multi-threaded producer/consumer pattern, and things like background threads for UI processing and using SwingUtilities.invokeLater() ?
I'm sort of at a loss here, for coding Java, which is better, Netbeans or Eclipse?
writing a very simplistic HTTP/1.0 web server in Java is always very educational, too
bonus points for accepting multiple clients concurrently in a semi-efficient manner
Okay, but which IDE should I use?
14:55
Zack said don't use IDE.
@vedantchandra I wasn't replying directly to you; I was still talking to Gowtham
@allquixotic Oh :P
there's not really a "better" as far as IDE is concerned, as long as you're using something that takes care of compilation and project/file management for you, with syntax highlighting, and possibly some sort of intellisense
I've used NetBeans and Eclipse both a whole lot, and I don't think you can go wrong by using either one
Does eclipse also have a profiler?
there's also IntelliJ which some people prefer
@vedantchandra an external plugin I think, but yes
14:57
Alright, I think I'll go Eclipse. Thanks a lot!
I think Eclipse has more corporate backing and a larger continual evolution of its codebase, but NetBeans also had/has a lot of community around it, though these days it seems mainly to be driven by Oracle
recently Eclipse has received a lot of open source enhancements from IBM because they use Eclipse as a basis for several proprietary products... they keep their "crown jewels" code proprietary, but they open source the generally useful infrastructure
and they completely re-did SWT to make it faster and more compatible with new OSes
there's also the amazing project WindowBuilder, a third-party add-on to Eclipse, which used to be proprietary, but Google open-sourced it... they bought out the company that was selling it and released it as open source :D
