@Psycogeek Only Duke Nukem will survive.
Ohh baby I want your ads, oooh baby just give me ads, that ain't a media player its just a commercial layer , give me ads. Ooooh to the store, gonna buy me lots of junk just like a whore, give me shopping, give me infomercials give me ads. You can break all of my programs, and fill up all my disks with your ads.
It really not an update, sorry but your to late, its all ads.
Needs a title, Ode to advance OS.
didn't know you were a poet @Psycogeek
;)
I got lots of DRM now, its really kinda neet, I can't play my own video but I grovel at your feet, Macrovision and Microsoft have set it up quite nice, I can see whatever I want, as long as I pay the price. Put my music on the puter, that I sung myself one day, but now they want to charge me for everytime I play, just give me ads, I really need them ads.
00:31
I sped up my computer, its faster than before, the system makes it faster by beating on the core. it's used up all my memory just like it did before. so why is it so slow now, after all that I have done? They are only trying to use me to make the ads all run. I got fast ads, fast ads, I cant not see the text, but I'm not that perplexed , I got the ads.
HTLM5 what a nifty sounding thing, but what will this improvement to me really bring? I got pictures sound and video and text right off the web, so what else is there to make the tide ebb . More adds, more more ways to bring them. Without a new delivery system the web would stagnate, they have to do something or the haters will hate, so bring me ads, more more more ads.
It works better with the music, but that part is all in my head :-0
00:58
It ended up putting IE10 anyway. it is pretty cool how I do not need Flash to play video at youtube. Only problem is they do not play right when I slam into the video, I have to refresh the page first.
@Psycogeek Dang I guess SU users didn't know you that well... You have got talent. Consider yourself participating at American Idol?
@Boris_yo I would first have to make a fool of myself on Youtube, Then you go viral, then you go to American idio idol.
@Psycogeek No worries. YouTube is free. Get your first PR there for free!
@Boris_yo would you believe ? because the scientists are to busy making money on it already.
The politicians have to wait for the bribes
If they roll over to early, there goes the pot o' gold.
You realize that they will "fix" global climate change, just like they fixed everything else. We just need to give them money, for some really smart sounding solution, that will go horribly wrong and then we really got something to worry about.
As odd as it sounds, there was going to be global cooling, the billions of tons a year of particles in the air (much like a volcano or massive forest fire) were going to block the sun. we would all freeze to death and die. (in our cars with the motor running)
They "fixed" the particulate problem, by arranging to have ONE aspect of the horrific world damaging pollution slowed down drastically , this (of course) takes it further off of nature, as an imbalance. The gasses are going into the air still , pretty much making every person breathing them rather "different" and the particulates no longer provide any balance.
Sooo, dumasses that they are, they are researching (none other than) purposefully putting way more horrific particulates into the air, to "solve" the problem. It makes perfect sense
Then, knowing human nature, they will want to distribute this mylar garbage (guessing) into low earth orbit, so it will stay in place longer. This of course will be very easy to control, because it will be spread out 165 million miles.
And getting up there to "fix" it again is not so easy.
Next they will have to release "Smart Particles" they will be designed to attract and disemnate the first set of particles. By doing so they will add another 58trillion tons of rocket fuel based gasses into the air, making the other problem worse.
The "smart particles" will be designed to attract, with unintended consequences, they will attach themselves to sattalites booster rockets, the moon, and space junk will be raining down out of the sky.
But that isn't a problem yet, because they will "FIX" that . . . .
Almost the first lesson in science , the last lesson in business "cause and effect" for every action there is an equal and often way worse :-) reaction.
01:52
@Psycogeek I hope you really needed this info :) I'm going for a smoke because my brain hertz now

A: Is RAID 0 stripe size the amount placed on each disk? Or the total block size?

50-3Data striping: In computer data storage, data striping is the technique of segmenting logically sequential data, such as a file, so that consecutive segments are stored on different physical storage devices. -Wikipedia Terminology used when discussing Data Striping Stripe/Block: A stripe...

@50-3 oh hjey I found the forensic link, got it right here. and I hope you used the right "terminology"
As the question stated, i wanted to See it, based on it split up, as that would be total proof. this guy shows where the actual breaks in the data are.
OOps, the video landed in the wrong spot, you dont want to be watching all that stuff :-)
Try this. youtube.com/… And the time is 50:44
02:10
Yer it's not easy without access to the hardware (That you can legaly show) as I don't have a raid controller for my home PC
But like I said it's a ambiguous term that isn't well defined
Hopefully we can get some peer review happening on it later when everyone is in chat
@50-3 i think it was ambiguously used on the web in places, now i am pretty sure everyone was saying more the same thing. and SLAGs comment is mostly correct.
@Psycogeek a lot of confusion has come from the Intel post and if he had have posted that answer on Superuser he probably would have been downvoted until he clarified what he was trying to say
@50-3 well it is done now, you want the bounty get the video in there high, like 1st 1/3rd. youtube.com/… at time 50:44 And i will close it up.
And the answer means, i now have a raid chunk size for all 4 disks of 512K or 1/2meg on my 4Xraid0 storage cluster. 128k going to each disk.
I set the "system" drive and the 2 working chunks in a seperate array of the same disks, to a 64K, it might be a bit to big for that part.
The key being "how the programs themselves write" and how the Intel system handles it. I think with the write cache on and set to allow a delayed cache, could make a difference.
02:26
@Psycogeek Done added
In my older systems having intels Own write cache enabled changed everything a LOT, in this system (with 4 disks) , the benchmark things dont seem to change as much based on thw write cache being enabled.
Also note if you had just commented on my post saying what you were looking for I would have put in the same effort :)
@50-3 it works.
You seem surprised
@50-3 now downvote the question.
02:30
Why?
because they wont let me downvote it, and the info in it is somewhat wrong, so it needs to be suspect.
What information is wrong? also I've had an upvote on it since the 14th so can't really change it till it's edited
@50-3 not surprised i just had to make sure the video landed right, i have been holding its link here for days.
@50-3 what slag said at the bottom of harrys post is probably correct.
the question does not demonstrate the 2 trains of thought, only 1 twice.
No it's actually wrong the Intel ICH range will only write when their is something to write so with a 96kb it will take up 64kb on one drive and 32kb on the other if however it was a 97kb file it would take up 128kb 64kb on each drive
does that make sense?
@50-3 well isnt that another question. Multiple clusters can be tossed into the stripe, question is when does the raid controller bail out on anything comming in and just up and write the stripe without it being "filled" with the max clusters.
Another question. Files end at at a cluster, even if a file does not "fill" the cluster, this is known. do strips of the data end also without fill when the "File" ends.
Or can strips not only have multiple clusters, but also multiple files? It might be assumed that Clusters of any file (including more than one) could be tossed together into a strip.
02:44
No once you write 1 bit to it that segment cannot be written with other data that is unrelated
So when working with small text files we always use 4k stripe size
as to not waste data
Which brings up . . . Blast it, If the strip is filled with clusters before write, would it ever be brought back up again, to finish the strip. And the answer to that is the intel raid controller is Putting clusters into an arrangement of Sectors on the disk. There is no actual "Block" like a SSD? the sector sizes that the raid controller is working with are always Less than=the stripe size.
I feel the hertz coming again
The Strip is not a cluster.
and a less than 600byte file is totally stored in the MBR anyways :-) gads.
So lets take a 2K file. stuff it in a 4K cluster, and 1/2 the space is wasted.
Yes, but I'm not sure if it would waste a 8k Stripe if using 4k clusters
I feel the hertz building
I might need to step away and do some business work that all the cool kids are on about
then take a bunch of 4k clusters, and NOT make up a stripe of them. Instead write them to a section of secters called a stripe. |-----| <--- the intel only has to put those clusters into the stripe size on the disk ----> |----| and put the next set into the sectors on that disk. It does not have to hold them and make up a big chunk first.
02:55
Yer this gone past me I've never been good a theoretical computing I know how to setup and configure but this level of theory is beyond me
HERTZ brain thing
@50-3 well i dont know, but i could always make 2 more QUESTions :-)
@Psycogeek yer ask it - I can't answer it - If you don't get an answer here it might even qualify for server fault
Just give then a week in SU then if nothing comes out of it ask a mod to shift to SF
@50-3 Ahh i know you can do it, just get past the brain frying part, and dream about all that crap you read already. why you will have a eureka moment .
Yer wake up at 2am like Oh wait I know the answer and then get slapped across the face by the GF for accidentally waking her; forget the answer and go back to sleep
03:08
So if I have a red mark on my face tomorrow then you will know I worked it out
Just get 2 tickets to the science exploritorium, and take her there, while she is pushing all the buttons, you could go over to the virtual raid demonstration :-)
Yer we don't have those in aus -_-
If the dang Strips will only hold Single files, then i am pretty much screwd with my present settings.
I know they can hold multiple clusters.
the question is can they hold multiple clusters of differeent file items. and nobody ever has mentioned Big space losses from oversized stripe size.
Not to my knowledge but what benefit would their be to having different cluster and stripe sizes?
your just streaming clusters to areas of each disk in the team, the strip size just sets up the splitting size. (and it wont change the disks sector size)
the clusters are apples, even if they are parly eaten (file does not fill) . Each person get tossed 4 apples at a time 16 apples flowing out to 4 people.
Some of the apples could be yellow, some red and some green, yet still i specifically toss 4 to each person.
each person puts the apples on the table 0@0@ |@@OO and over there ----> @0@0| OO@@ -- and 0@0@ |@@OO and over there ----> @0@0| OO@@ . on read of a specific file, we just ask them All for Red apples (specific clusters)
@50-3 They said that there is little speed differance when properly matching cluster and stripe sizes?
03:40
mentally after figuring out what a stripe size is, we be thinking that the controller has to hand us this 0@0@ back. but the controller actually reads in the smaller disk "sectors" so it would not have any problem with handing us back a few sectors @ one cluster, from that strip.
@Psycogeek 我的头很痛

Yup brain fry. I am going to go . . . defrag the raid :-)

@Bob I dont think sooo, glass is an insulator, unless it it has lots of impurities or has a grid on it, or special front. The answer qualifies as being wrong in most laptop situtations. Add in the real user name, and the malformed avitar. I might think this was a "put up your friend or enemies picture, to herass em" thing.

@Psycogeek We all know it's an insulator. That's what makes this answer so ridiculous :P
Hey, looks like @slhck took care of it.

yeah, normally she doesn't do that. but sometimes when she's in heat she does. One time when I was helping a friend running some cables along the walls I was lying on the floor and suddenly she starts humping my heel like crazy.

what're you looking for tho? low cost? light weight?
Not really, no. It'll be sitting on the desk, docked to a monitor, most of the time. But once a week I need to carry it somewhere else.
08:32
I don't care if it's butt ugly. Should be cheap. Performance-wise I definitely don't need graphics power or any of that sort.

currently on an HP laptop, actually
oh, and the keyboard is actually decent - some manufacturers (coughToshibacough) have keyboards that feel gummy out of the box...
Hmm. The T-series looks a little expensive to me?

@Bob: the ideapads are a totally different kettle of fish
@slhck: also, with that price you get pretty good service
I had my hard drive swapped out cause it failed a smart test
08:40
Okay… hmm. I'll see.
Anything specific under $1k you could recommend or is that not worth looking for?
If you want lower cost, dell's gotten somewhat better lately.
lol, most of those are under 1K
alas, I'm not currently in the market for a laptop so I'm out of touch
Bob

Honestly? I'd take an HP over a Dell.
@Bob: we have a mini 10 here thats been a reliable, unassuming thing.

@Bob: they are

they probably would be happy if you let them put the next tower in your backyard.

@vedantchandra no surprise I tried that. Outlook open I can command+N and send emails but couldn't work out How to get the mailbox up -_-
So outlook was open I could send email open to do error logs ect... but had no idea How to re open the inbox window
Bob

@50-3 Oooh, you're in Melbourne? :D
Though, never seen a laptop overheating affecting the paint :S
Over the last 30 years, Sydney has averaged about 3 degrees hotter (both min and max)
probably doesn't make much difference
the peaks at 45 degrees were painful, though

Why isnt the LastAccessTime of a file updated when it is opened in any program, and not saved?
what does that value mean then?

> The NTFS file system delays updates to the last access time for a file by up to 1 hour after the last access.
aah
that >_<
Bob
Bob
> Not all file systems can record creation and last access times, and not all file systems record them in the same manner. For example, the resolution of create time on FAT is 10 milliseconds, while write time has a resolution of 2 seconds and access time has a resolution of 1 day, so it is really the access date.
11:05
ok thanks I didnt find that page
Bob
Bob
lol
for future ference, that was the first result for "windows accessed time"
...
I searched for "last acess time"
Bob
Bob
sometimes, you can get better results by narrowing down to msdn and/or technet (e.g. with site:msdn.microsoft.com, or just msdn as a keyword)
I am bad at things ;)
Bob
Bob
you could even search on those sites directly, but I prefer Google.
11:06
or just use the msdn page
well yeah. But thank you...
I dont know what to do about that now, 1 day is a looong time
Bob
Bob
@CBenni that's only for FAT
if you're on NTFS, it's supposedly up to an hour
an hour is too long too.. I guess I will have to do everything differently
Bob
Bob
hm? what are you doing?
perhaps there's an alternate method
Of course there is an alternative method, but checking the file time would have been the most convenient
basically, I want to check if the user has opened a file, or if he has not, open it for him
I can just open it regardless and then set a registry flag
it will open the file even if the user has already opened the file before using the program, but whatever
Bob
Bob
you'll probably have better luck checking if the program is already open
or you could even scan open handles, but that's a little overkill
11:11
I could even touch the file to have a way higher acess time or sth
nah the file could have been closed already
Bob
Bob

Q: Getting the file handles of given process

RubinshI need a way for getting all of the file handles of a given process. for example, given a the winword.exe process handle, i would like to get the list of the file handles of that process (doc files etc). i'm using the Win32 api via C#/pInvoke. Thanks!

You can check if it has an open handle to the file.
yeah
Bob
Bob
(You could even check for every process, effectively telling you if something on the machine has an open handle)
this depends on how the program works, though
but what if the program that acessed the file was closed
but like 5 minutes ago
Bob
Bob
it's fairly typical for programs to keep a handle open until they close
but some might open the file, read it, close it, and open again when it's time to save. i.e. they might not hold hte handle open
really case by case
11:13
so basically, there is neither a handle nor the acess time changed

@CBenni then the handle would be closed
there is technically no way to check if the fiel has been acessed

and you'd just open the file
so I wont bother

really, in this kind of case, I'd just keep my own program state for 'already opened'
and if the user opens the file separately in another program, that's their problem/choice
had to deal with something similar recently. basically, used a mutex to make sure my program only had one running copy, and it kept track of which files it opened (Word docs)

@JourneymanGeek swapped to quink
about same blackness as food dye
dissolves slower in water o.O
it requires mixing ot dissolve
same as food dye - no feathering, seeping
the quink is perfect
washes off to a kind of faded blue
(while the FD washes off pretty much completely)
next test: cheap exercise book
very smooth; no seepage or feathering
yup, perfect
