How many tabs do you guys have open in your web browser? At the moment? And what's your average?
@Boris_yo the other one is a "geek squad" ups (dont laugh cause it is well done) and has 2 normal batteries. The third sits on a duplication tower and has 2 medium sized bats. Last time I let it Slide, and did not maintain them, one of my Best APC regulated supplys Fried, from trying to charge batteries that were Dead dead dead. see here, i can get them from a good company batteryspace.com/12vsealedleadacidbatteries.aspx
@Sammy I have so many open in Chrome that 8GB of memory is not enough.
something like these are in the beast. batteryspace.com/… total after ship and tax $50
@Boris_yo I have one of those stats add-ons in Firefox. Right now it shows 293 tabs open. Average is 82, and I've been recording since April 29. Max ever is 304.
@Psycogeek Don't you send your UPS to them where they replace battery?
@Sammy You accumulate more tabs and forget about older ones. You end up in a big mess.
10:07
@Boris_yo That's a lot of tabs. But luckily the latest editions of Firefox can handle it pretty good actually. Some previous versions were having memory issues. I have 4 GB.
@Boris_yo no the warrenty is over before the need for the first battery maintance exists. assuming it is not needed much, because crappy gell cells do not do that many cycles. The drain rate is also very high, sucking a battery dry in 15-25minutes is rather hard on them. The poweer doesnt even go out enough around here to test them.
Yeah, it's like that. I'm a "taboholic"! =)
I need help... =P
@Boris_yo Imagine starting Google Chrome with 293 tabs from previous session......... that would be a nightmare!!
Because Chrome likes to load every single tab at once...
Firefox used to be like that, in like version 1.8 or so. But then Firefox got better. Chrome didn't. Chrome didn't even exist back then.
As a Taboholic, this is the single most important feature I miss in Chrome. =)
@Psycogeek If warranty is always over before there's any need of replacement, what good is such warranty?
@Sammy So should I move to Firefox?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo As a guy who once had >2100 tabs, don't go above 2000.
Weird things start happening.
Currently a little over 1500 on my desktop, which works reasonably well.
@Boris_yo i do not think that any of the standard warenties cover a battery replacement anyway, unless i paid yearly for that with an extra warrenty. they are "consumables" :-)
10:16
@Boris_yo It's your choice. Choice is good. I never left Firefox really. I just started cheating on it when Chrome came around. Please don't tell Firefox! ;) I live a double life.
@Bob Firefox?
@Bob Over 2000 tabs??? And I thought I was the crazy one.......
Bob
Bob
@Sammy Ya.
@Bob Haha! LOL! =) That's crazy man.....
So how is that working out for you? No problems yet?....
Bob
Bob

Weird things start happening.
@Bob Because of lack of RAM or just Firefox bugs?
Bob
Bob
browser UI text (incl. tab names and address bar) would stop rendering afer a bit of use, until restarting the browser
killed off ~600, and it's fine now
that was only with FF23, though
that update might have introduced some graphics thing that doesn't like 2k tabs
not that they'd test that
10:21
@Psycogeek I had warranty of 2 years on battery of my UPS. We have "our" UPS here.
Bob
Bob
and I didn't file a bug report - fully expecting a 'not intended usage' reply :P
@Boris_yo RAM was fine (though I'd love a 64-bit version of FF)
I imagine the sheer number of text objects overflowed something somewhere
webpages would render fine most of the time, though rendering would freeze now and then
@Bob Yeah, I have had similar problems. I think Firefox 4 - 12 or so were most problematic with many tabs. (I'm not sure of the version numbers as they keep changing the version number at a rapid pace now.)
Bob
Bob
again, it's fine now that I'm back to 1500 :P
@Bob Remember old times back then when we didn't know what tabs are? How we surfed 1 window and 1 website at moment?
@Boris_yo But the battery should last 2-3 years? so again like you said what good is the warrenty? just coveres defects, like most warrenties.
Bob
Bob
10:22
@Sammy some massive memory leak issues around that time, too
at the moment, though, FF uses less memory than Chrome (last I checked)
@Boris_yo I remember that IE7 introduced me to tabs
"wow!"
then I switched to FF2
@Bob You are right about the memory leakage issues.
Bob
Bob
or was it FF2 first?
@Bob How much RAM do you have?
Bob
Bob
kinda muddied in my head
@Sammy they fixed it a while ago, though
@Psycogeek Yeah, but what if battery turns to be "bad"? That's where warranty is good?
Bob
Bob
10:24
it's going quite smoothly now
@Sammy 8 GB
thinking of going to 16
@Bob I have 4 GB right now, thinking of going to 8 GB! :p
But Firefox can't use more than like 3000~ish GB if they don't make it 64-bit, right?
Bob
Bob
@Sammy ya
there's some 64-bit builds but they're a bit outdated
I think they lag like 2-3 versions
@Bob Of course, I meant MB, not GB... 3000 MB. But 3000 GB RAM would have been nice! :)
aight
@Sammy Look forward to year 2155...
10:28
@Psycogeek What kind of horror is this?!
@Boris_yo its all those really usefull toolbar items? dont you use some of them?
@Psycogeek Hate them at least in IE.
@Boris_yo Yeah... the computer race has been amazing so far. But I think 3000 GB of RAM commonly available to average home user will happen sooner than year 2155.
Just look at how fast we got to 8 GB or even 16 GB.
3000 GB of RAM and 5 PB (petabyte) of SSD.
@Boris_yo well (according to the makers) you just dont know what your missing. You could have a browser like the one shown.
drooling...... :)
@Psycogeek Is that IE screenshot for real? Or did you just photoshop that?
10:34

hi
i need to test something
so i want to change tha mac address
but i cannot do it
i mean
i use technitium software
to change tha MAC address
but once I do
the internet is not working
@EinsteinsGrandson for our Service provider you would have to change it to a valid Mac address that they connect to, like yours or another customers. because here that is how they know you, to connect to you.
( or so you can connect to them)
@EinsteinsGrandson If it is wireless comments blog.technitium.com/2013/07/… said this "Your access point is probably preventing access to network adapters who have 0x02 set as first octet. There had been many such feedback. No solution for it yet."

now it works

11:22
Hello guys :)\
@OliverSalzburg @JourneymanGeek @TomWijsman hello to all of my friend, ooo @CanadianLuke you changed your name O_O
@avirk Welcome back :)
hey pal great to see you here :)
by the way I'm here to get the help ;)
and I know you can do that for me :P
Which Firefox version installed? @OliverSalzburg @Psycogeek
@Boris_yo hey man watz up?
@avirk watz up
11:30
nothing a busy year with life
struggling with that
as my cousin got that laptop from government and i want to remove the logo
:P
lol
MDL is dodgy as hell, but they usually have good information
@JourneymanGeek you know that better
I'm curious what the logo is?
there is no good competitor seems to me of SE. :)
@JourneymanGeek Dodgy? What do you mean by that? That they have priority of money over providing quality information?
11:37
@JourneymanGeek its the pic of CM and his father.
which seems like hell
@Boris_yo: they have information that involves things we don't usually talk about on superuser
a very red and ugly
@avirk: ahh, so they've been learning from tamil nadu ;)
@avirk Why not? In forums you can get laser targeted help. You are not aware of much forums, are you?
@JourneymanGeek yeah its like that, TN provides the lenovo laptops.
@Boris_yo Mate i'm
11:39
@avirk: with great big decals of a fat lady ;)
@JourneymanGeek lol, but a user has posted a blog to overcome that, but for HP it seems differten
that is the latest bios firmware of my model
i flashed it but got nothing
there could be a reason IMO they have put it on dualboot
with ubuntu
I vaguely remember there's a intel utility for that
may be that is causing to not let the cahnge logo in bios, or it isn't?
@JourneymanGeek really?
11:41
@avirk no...
@JourneymanGeek Updating firmware should reset logo to default.
yeah
@Boris_yo: should ;p
@Boris_yo but it didn't
don't know why
at the moment, I'm not sure ;p
@avirk Are you sure it's BIOS logo and not OS booting logo?
11:43
@Boris_yo OUCH!
@Boris_yo yep man, OS logo down't come o show "Press F2 to enter in setup" line :P
;p
@Braiam: actually, its a logical thing to wonder
@Braiam What?
> Are you sure it's BIOS logo and not OS booting logo?
11:44
that is waht we talking about :P
^ obviously PEBKAC ... @Boris_yo
@JourneymanGeek Where usually BIOS keeps its boot logo? In its firmware, right? Or can be there another memory place where it loads logo from?
@Boris_yo: I'm not actually sure
@avirk: the bios flash should fix it
hmm
so this is wierd
that looks doable tho
Avirk check your current version of BIOS and notice it has changed indeed.
11:47
@avirk What's on your mind?
@JourneymanGeek I flashed that update but it didn't helped me
@Boris_yo i checked its updates on 13/5/2013 and update release is after the date but it doesn't updating the bios in msinfo32
maybe its the wrong model?
@Boris_yo I don't know really, its hard to play with those hex values
there might be some sub-model with a different page (just guessing here)
@JourneymanGeek in that it will refuse to run the setup and I have confirmed the model no. through the BOX it the same one'
@Bob mate you are very calm and silent here :P
BTW how are you/
11:49
the fact that its not runningis odd
@avirk Find the guys who did that to your BIOS and make them undo it!
@Boris_yo lol then I have to catch the CM and then HP employees :P
@avirk CM? Who are they?
I think I should have to post the Question regarding this obver SU
@Boris_yo Chief Minister of the state :P
@avirk And offer 100 bounty.
11:51
chief minister
@JourneymanGeek That's what he wrote...
@Boris_yo that is after 2 days mate, but if you know the solution I can put that after 2 days and reward you immediately. :)
@avirk If I knew I would tell for free.
@Boris_yo I know mate

A: How can I change my BIOS splashscreen?

NewbiecomputerexpertThis will not work as the splash screen is saved onto your BIOS. The only way is to flash it across. I have never tried this, but I am pretty sure that this will work; no guarantees though. Install WinRAR, a extracting software that has a free trial download, which is all you need. Hunt around...

doesn't seems to solve my problem :(
@avirk Darn it! This is illogical!
11:55
@Boris_yo seems but you can see by downloading that exe file of bios update and there is no image showing up.
@avirk Showing where? In downloaded BIOS file?
@Boris_yo 24.0
@Boris_yo after extracting the setup of bios exe
Wheee!
heh
dogs seem to like chairs. Or under desks.

Anyone knows auditd a little ?
Hmm, youtube. Does not work here....
@Hennes: Afraid of heights :/

A: What is the rationale behind safely removing USB media from windows PCs?

user255990This is a fundamental physical problem, due random factors some writes may leave a logical 1 bit in a electrical 0.72 state. The fix is easy: just rewrite the bit, perhaps even a few times. Eventually it will stick.

@Hennes I installed it and converted that video to webm on my server just for you :P
hmm
anyone installed quickoffice yet?
@JourneymanGeek WTF ?
@JourneymanGeek Whut?
12:27
lol
yeah, I just wanted to share the horror.
Well, voltages make sense here. Not not as an answer to the question.
This is kind of stupid question
But what is the English word for the space where I put login and password on any internet website?
in the internet form
brackets?
blankets?
12:30
@EinsteinsGrandson form
form
but each and every line is what?
When you are filling up the form
You see something like:
Name:
Surname:
the whole thing is called Form.
Date of birth:
Password
form fields?
text boxes
many different terms
yeah text box I think
thank u
12:32
some people call them jelly donuts, I mean, there are just so many names for them in IT
form {fields} are special cases of text box
the box where you are typing stuff is a text box.
time to go to work!
slap those jelly donuts!
@JourneymanGeek can you make any search for a gui tool which can do it for me?
How can a server not answer "connection refused" if he isn't listening to the port ?
is that a kernel configurable behaviour ?
12:44
Blackholed?
That's weird, other servers answer connection refused almost instantly
Bob
Bob
@avirk oh hi
reasonably well, you?
@Kwaio That's because the listen to port.
Bob
Bob
been a while
@Bob fine here too mate. :)
have you seen what trouble I have regarding boot splash screen?
Bob
Bob
12:49
uhm... @jokerdino could you please delete chat.stackexchange.com/transcript/message/11312993#11312993
@allquixotic "Spot, this is down. You are down. Down is good."
Bob
Bob
@avirk no, missed it, sorry
@Boris_yo But nothing's listening to the port
At least, netstat -ln reports nothing
@Kwaio In that case, how can it respond about refused connection?
@Bob mate can you look into this for me, how can i change the splash screen of bios
12:51
@OliverSalzburg But I just upgraded to version 18.0.1 Oops sorry, it is indeed 24.0 But update notified me of version 18 to update to. Weird.
@Boris_yo Isn't that the common behaviour ? If no process is listening to the socket, the kernel responds "connection refused". you mean the kernel wouldn't be listening itself ?
@Bob yeah
Bob
Bob
@avirk depends a lot on the laptop :\
@jokerdino thanks!
@avirk this is odd, Trying to change a resource file in a bios, because a Bios updater is very critical about the crc or md5 or whatever of the file it is about to update to, so the user doesnt bork the bios , and brick a laptop.
@Bob mate any universal method or any method for hp will be helpful, I'm searching it but it seems my search term are not very good with this.
@Psycogeek probably yes
12:55
@avirk On the other hand it has been done more than once, with smart programmers people who know how to get all the checksum stuff re-done.
Bob
Bob
@avirk so is it replacing the Windows logo or the BIOS logo?
and is this UEFI or BIOS?
@Psycogeek that seems very hard for a new comer with this hard stuff or I'm just want to do it safely as its my cousins laptop not mine. :(
@Bob its bios logo, and i'm not sure about the UEFI but there is a link which says he backed up it for UEFI, google.com/…
there seems old version of bios too, but now i'm unsure will that work in any case as the latest update didn't showing up in MSINFO32 :
/
unless you download the wrong exe, BIOS updates are safe
Bob
Bob
@Braiam just make sure you don't turn it off, and that it's on a good power source
@Braiam i know that, I have done it many times with my acer
Bob
Bob
@avirk could you just set the BIOS splash time in the options to 0?
@Gowtham buddy glad to see you.
Bob
Bob
normally that prevents it from displaying at all
@Bob yeah... that would be crappy if your power gets cutoff while updating the bios...
@Bob hmmm seems logical, but I'm unsure where that option is in the bios settings.\
13:01
@avirk Hi ! LTNS
@Gowtham busy this year too much with personal stuffs and may be next year will be active here. :)
Bob
Bob
@avirk hunt around :P
the HP settings I've seen don't have all that many options
shouldn't take long to find it, if it exists
@Bob I read a blog post and they told HP has some hidden option in bios and we need to unlock them using some tweak, which is not really nice idea for me.
@avirk :)
Yay i'm getting poluted by audit logs
13:12
@Bob it seems it is BIOS not UEFI :)
@Gowtham Movie "Every microchip 'Made in China' has been infected with a virus that rapidly shuts down all modern technology." imdb.com/title/tt1772262/plotsummary?ref_=tt_ov_pl
got from the setupact.log:P
@Psycogeek o_O
nsa leak fall out is larger than I expected it to be :O wired.com/threatlevel/2013/09/rsa-advisory-nsa-algorithm
@Psycogeek Good thing we still have microchip factories outside of there ^^
And the future of BitCoins rests on NSA :O :C
Bob
Bob
13:15
> Every microchip
> infected with a virus
I get the feeling this is one of those extremely cringey movies
The virus only activates if you browse to 1.2.3.278
@Gowtham Ouch !
Bob
Bob
@Hennes you forgot a .9001
I can not remeber the actual IP addresses used in some movies. Just that the dot part was larger than 255
@Bob its not a epic blockbuster, and has some logic flaws that is for sure. amercans have 2-5 weapons for every citizen :-) no chip . good luck invading that.
Bob
Bob
13:17
@Hennes Some used more than four octets :P
@Bob still have S2? if yes which rom?
Bob
Bob
@avirk Still stock.
Planning to upgrade to stock JB, but it's a fair bit of work.
@Bob version?
Bob
Bob
I'd have to reroot and install GApps again. And other tweaks.
So I've been putting it off.
@Bob you are rooted right?
Bob
Bob
13:18
@avirk Currently ICS.
@Bob well Just download the NeatROM lite which is flashable zip of JB stock CUM custom ROM :)
Bob
Bob
@avirk No thanks.
I've said before, this is an I9100G, not a standard I9100.
It's completely different hardware.
moreover, it's the locked Chinese bootloader - only accepts Chinese ROMs
custom ROMs based on non-Chinese I9100G won't work
@Bob there si a neatrom for I9100G
Bob
Bob
non-I9100G won't work either
@avirk All custom ROMs I've seen are based on the French or Indonesian stock ROMs
It must be based on the Chinese version to even flash properly on my phone.
see that if that seems any helpfull way for you.
13:27
@Bob Does S2 have JB stock update available?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Yes.
> XWLSW
Nope
@avirk Told you already. Custom ROMs will not work.
I'm not willing to even try them. Tried flashing both custom and stock non-Chinese before. Doesn't work.
@Bob My latest stock from HTC is Android 2.3.3 I guess HTC forsake their customers compared to Samsung who still care about oldies.
Bob
Bob
The product code I must use is ZCLSF
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Nitrogen to prevent crushing.
13:31
I really hate and wonder why they do that ^^^
@Bob So it is nitrogen and not air? But why so much of it?
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo To prevent crushing!
I think it is marketing fraud.
Bob
Bob
Otherwise you end up with a bag of mush.
@Bob You can only assume they are handled like packages through international shipping.
@Boris_yo i dont know why after charging me almost 2 bucks for 4 ounces of greacy potatoes, someone can not handle the product itself better, so the chips are not dust. Kettle chips :-)
Bob
Bob
13:33
@Boris_yo It doesn't weigh anything anyway.
Chips are sold by weight, not by volume.
@Bob But package is big which gives assumption most of it is filled with chips.
Bob
Bob
@Boris_yo Anyone who assumes that has never had chips before.
If it takes you hundreds of bags to learn, then you're just a slow learner...
@Bob I must be unique person.
Bob
Bob
Seriously, it's to prevent crushing.
@Bob Haven't had so much bags in my life...
Bob
Bob
13:35
Chips crush very easily.
@Bob seriosly it isnt working.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek Take two bags of chips. Throw one around while unopened. Open the other, drain it of air, and reseal the end (e.g. rubber band). Throw that around too.
Make your own chips, all you need is potatoes and a knife and a Vat of oil.
Bob
Bob
The latter will be far more crushed.
@Bob How was it previously when all this chips stuff was new to marker? You know, the first series of chips. Were packages full of chips and they learned to add nitrogen to prevent crushing or they started that practice in the first place?
Bob
Bob
13:36
No idea :P
Course making computer chips at home is not as easy.
@Psycogeek You forgot something. Microwave or oven.
@Psycogeek I make chips in my computer chassis at home. Here's your Computer Chips™
How about them orange puffy things, if you made them at home you would go broke trying to put all that orange stuff on them :-)
@Psycogeek Must be American dish...
food paint can.
13:44
@Boris_yo when chips first came out, they were sold at a market; they would peel potatoes all day, and as customers came up, they'd slice the potatoes right there while you wait, fry them in oil, put some salt, and put them in paper bags
no nitrogen, no preservatives, no sealing... you would have to eat them within a few days or they'd go bad

Is working 12 days enough to cover your living standards?
13:58
@Boris_yo that depends on the oil used.
@allquixotic And which oil is most healthy today?

at least it implies that it is computers communicating
