being from california, here people dont seem to see it as a "life sentance" for getting caught. but selective people have still done 7 years for it. while some other person is fried daily on legally prescribed Pharms 5 times worse ???
Sometimes i think that california has some sort of legal kinda thing going, where it is illegal in the sence that they dont want to encourage ANY of the negatives, and legal in the sence that if your not a problem, nobody cares. How do you get there ? make it less of a crime?
How did any of the laws so far get adjusted without people freaking out about the ramifications? they reduced the crime. "de-criminalisation"? not a prison worthy offence, but maintained as a misdemenor, then "violation" like traffic ticket. such is the "progress" of de-criminalisation? crap time to turn on the spell checker.
00:24
@Bob cheap printer ink is suprisingly good. The only issue I have is its super wet ;p
Looks like I need to move RSS feed readers again
i hope feedly doesn't go under crosses fingers
not too likely
TOR was a great little hobby project that wasn't quite able to scale
Awesome folks, but they weren't ready for the flood of users that they encountered
i wonder how many of their users are people like me, who signed up for it and were like "meh"
they might not be the problem ;p
I actually use/love their site
@tapped-out: some notes on Darksiders: Level design is strikingly similar to, and clearly inspired by, the Zelda games...
In each dungeon, there is a
- a map
00:32
there's a good chance I'll end up running my own instance of something
- a Hoardseeker, equivalent to the compass in Zelda games
actually
feedly isn't half bad either.
- a Beholder Key, equivalent to the Giant Key
might maintain an account just for syncing
feedly took me a lot of configuring and getting used to, and there's still some weird issues with syncing, but it's alright
@DragonLord well, i'm kind of under 18 ATM... ;)
00:37
... and even little puzzles that, when solved, trigger a special sound effect
Yet at the same time, combat is hack-and-slash, God of War style.
I think Vigil Games actually did a good job here.
@tapped-out: it didn't have a webui or a full article interface back in the day
all stuff that was added after the death sentence on GReader was declared, i imagine
i was pleasantly surprised when it grabbed all my starred items from GReader
lol
feedly won't remember I want full article views :/
it doesn't preserve the setting cross-device
no
it dosen't remember it when I switch feeds either
00:44
huh
does for me
i've got feeds in folders tho
@DragonLord as long as it doesnt have HeadCrabs :-) auggg
@JourneymanGeek rage.
@nhinkle: I can entirely understand their point of view.
Its a pity, really
You guys looking for an RSS reader should try GoRead.io - it was developed by someone from Stack Exchange.
00:48
@JourneymanGeek oh, I know. I understand their position, and I respect their decision. You can't sacrifice your family for the internet.
@nhinkle: I'm seriously considering that one
@JourneymanGeek it borked the import the first time I tried it, but I tried it again today and it seems to be working. I don't like the interface as much, but it works good enough for now.
Its really fast
@nhinkle: its still in development I guess ;p
I need a new desktop client tho
Can't help you there. I've been using web apps for RSS reading since ever.
I'm currently running feed-demon, but yanno, running EOL software isn't what the cool kids do
lol
@nhinkle: this is PRECISELY the problem I am having ;p
00:53
They should open-source the old reader, and let everyone run it on their own VPS as much as they want.
lol
@nhinkle: maybe Jeff Atwood might pick it up as his next project ;p
@nhinkle: eh, if only ;p
damn, goread is fast
At this point tho, I'd rather run my own
@JourneymanGeek easier said than done?
I mean, run my own instance of it ;p
Of what though? Is GoRead open-sourced?
00:56
The entire source is on github under the ISC license. Some other readers are open source, but appeared quite difficult to actually install. Using app engine allows go read to be easily run by anyone else by basically changing a single line; instructions are in the repo. A few hundred feeds can be run under the app engine free quota (number of users is basically unimportant to datastore use).
Oh, that's cool.
I could make the UI suck less.
instructions don't look too hard
I should check that out I guess.
01:01
too bad there's no mobile version, and i don't know enough about mobile webdev to code one :/
You make most things smaller, and some things bigger, basically.
-_-
meanwhile, stubborn RasPi absolutely refuses to play nice with this monitor. urg
ah, got it. missed overscan option three screens into raspi-config :P
user43095
01:33
Anyone here?
yes? haha
user43095
I'm confused on how to use this:
user43095
You'd think that this would be better documented...
yeeah...
user43095
01:39
Yeeah... you know how to do it or yeeah... you don't know?
note to self: is a bad tag
@jeffreylin_ yeeah... i don't know how to do it right now
i'll poke around it a bit
user43095
Thanks.
I wonder if greasemonkey might work here...
user43095
@JourneymanGeek I'm using TamperMonkey
user43095
Would it be easier to just use Firefox?
01:45
same idea
just something that loads js into a page
user43095
// ==UserScript==

    setTimeout("document.getElementById('sb_form_go').click();",1500);
user43095
That's the code.
user43095
TamperMonkey reports that no script is running.
user43095
Oh, you have to navigate to the page.
user43095
Silly me.
01:49
lol
user43095
Excellent. Free Amazon Gift Cards FOREVER
user43095
You guys can use this if you want, it's from The Bridge.
yeah Bing Rewards is awesome :D
meanwhile, i still have little idea what that script does
user43095
That's to compensate for the fact that Google rocks.
i think i know what it's supposed to do, but it's not doing even that
user43095
01:54
@tapped-out It searches the numbers 1-90
user43095
you have to search anything in bing and then run it.
no the injector.js script
user43095
Oh, you don't need that.
user43095
I think it was before TamperMonkey worked properly.
ah okay
i've got bing set as my main search engine, it does alright for 90% of my queries
user43095
01:58
And the other 10?
the only time i have to consciously switch to google is for linux-y and programming stuff
and actually, i don't believe i had to switch for linux-y stuff today :o
user43095
Alrighty then, thanks guys.
i've accumulated 1118 Bing Rewards points, i've been using it since last november

02:06
1994 lifetime credits, but i burned up a lot in a sweepstakes i didn't win :/ i wonder how many credits you have to pour into one of those to win it
user43095
It's not worth it
user43095
2516 lifetime credits. I win. :P
:( Not available in my country
duckduckgo :-) when searching takes presidence over being tracked redirected and dmced
yeah, but you don't get free amazon cards :P
02:20
@tapped-out dang, i hate when that happens. How do i get free stuff from them without signing up (for one more pos on the web)?
don't think you can
it's connected to a Hotmail/Live/Microsoft/whatever-the-hell-they're-calling-it-now account
Thats the only (stupid) reason i dont have my avatar here, because it was one more sign-up.
@tapped-out the almighty net access card via large corporate structure. Nice way to get into places, but i still dont know the ramifications of that even. (being used here now via g-mail)
27 pages of leagalese mumbojumbo corporate speak , that changes every few months , only says things like "you use it, its Ours, and we respect some aspects of your privacy, while we sell your info out the back door"
@Psycogeek: I think SE has a 'local' ava option now
@JourneymanGeek good
@JourneymanGeek is working :-)
02:36
might take a moment to update I guess
it takes longer to populate in chat
02:51
@JourneymanGeek i got a pic in there, it is rather odd, then i got a pic of me leetel doggie :-)
that is what i use on e-bay
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It seems to work well enough here.
Might depend on the specific ink, and the pen.
yup
lol
@Psycogeek: cocker spaniel?
no he is not "dressed up" :-) after skinning all his hair off, that keeps sunburn and cold out for a while
@JourneymanGeek mut, cocker poodle.
lol
those are cocker ears ;p
and cocker colors to , but he has the poodley hair , that grows endlessly and has to be cut off manualy
so no shedding, which is one reason they are better for computers
03:00
lol
curly?
yes specially after being wet
carrys his own food and water (well some of it) and foldup water bowl when hiking
bores easily when stopped
doggie trail mix
the camera is straight, its the ground that isnt.

@jour do you think it would be a good idea to mix some good coloring blue and printer black?
food coloring*

anybody have a country that a leaker like snowden could actually go to? All the big countries have "trade agreements" all the small countries get assistant funds. what is left already has really shaky relations that lead to wars and actions. Leaving him stuck on a greenpeace boat in international waters ?
@Psycogeek Yeah, colourful Sealand en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Principality_of_Sealand
The US has assured russia they wont "take him out back and use the fireing squad", but with the rescent activities of the secretive parts of the goverment (for "terrorism"), a quick death would be an improvement. Dude is an american hero, but the fairest of trials would put him in the can for 100+ years.
@Paul whats that old oil well :-) i heard a few of them were being turned into hotels.
@Bob: I'd not put it in the pen first, in case there's some odd reaction ;p
@Paul if they put snowden down there, and have another coo attempt, would it be called SeaLand world war 2 or 3?
05:33
I thought they blew up sealand?
@JourneymanGeek and i thought they won the olympics skeet shooting over water competition :-)
oh, it caught fire
if they put snowden on it, it will run into a floating glacier (the cia is more creative than smart).
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Odd reaction? o.o
@Psycogeek Somalia?
Oh, wait, they have a government again.
@Bob: precipitation maybe ;p
Bob
Bob
05:47
o.o
@JourneymanGeek that would be weird
there isn't much in food dye
@Bob "Somalia: Obama Grants Somalia Eligibility for U.S. Military Aid." after the UN lifted the 20 year guns sanction, the US needs to rush in there quickly and give them weapons to improve thier situation.
Bob
Bob
How long would you recommend waiting?
hmm, right after you feed them? ". . . shows that 258,000 Somalis died in the famine between October 2010 and April 2012"" , Then give them guns :-)
Bob
Bob
06:02
@Psycogeek I was talking to @JourneymanGeek with that last message..
@Bob: in theory should be pretty much instant.
for some reason I'm thinking that printer ink is partially alcohol based
and watering it down might do 'stuff'
plus somalia, got hundreds of millions in US aid, and allows the US navy to patrol waters. The US (if i remember right) is activly maintaing "bases" in 27 countries.
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek o.o
I might be totally wrong here ;p
how is this for a logo, scalable? from balls to lines to blob of color
or this, which might still look like something in the tiny size
06:39
Going to client who days he supposed to be uninstalled paid antivirus offered by his ISP but complaints that he is not sure and his PC is still being slow. Any tips if I should "prepare" before coming to his place? Should I burn CD with helpful utilities and which should I burn? Or it will be enough to come and look first what's going on?
@Boris_yo a real tech comes with CD with tools, takes him 20min to fix. Me I do everything the hard way. i want to know WHY, not just run some stuff that fixes everything in seconds.
places like this bleepingcomputer.com/forums/t/314852/… drive me up the wall. At least some places allow you to unload a full list on them. But it is always "Download this" "run That" "Stuff this thing in there" and "Do excatly what we tell you and dont argue"
So, I took ownership on "Program Files" and "Windows", "Program Files" deleted fine however "Windows" is telling me that I need permission from my username to make changes to this folder.
Bob
Bob
@Psycogeek That's because trying to explain things to the typical user ends in tears more often than not.
But nobody ever says , what the person HAS, why they are running that, or what the ramifications are. and there was at least one of the utilities ComboFix, that makes serious changes to the system beyond removals.
So after pages and pages of text, none of the data is useful to anyone else, and some of the things they demaded the person run, MIGHT crop up with other (minor) problems later.
@Boris_yo: specific tool for uninstalling that AV
06:53
@Bob True. but they treat the more knowlegable user with the 1/2 list of crap in their computer the same way. remember your not allowed to alter course, or they cant do thier job, the way they do it.
If somone cant tell me, where they saw the baddie OR what they think the baddie is, or link to the malware site or anything, I would not run their things.
07:12
@Boris_yo jbwebtech.net/Blog/category/Virus-Removal note the notes, sometimes you cant get the update, and because CDs are ROM, that means a nice fresh version of the program with a nice fresh database would be usefull.
@Boris_yo blog.trendmicro.com/trendlabs-security-intelligence/… I try and get copy of hijackthis from either trend , or from majorgeeks direct off the site, vrses some click-me download . They now have messed up versions out there, that do addware, or virus even.
07:50
here is one example of one thing that was done via combofix (as used at that time, which could include scripting) , cleared out all the sites i had on restricted out of the registry, over 100 of them. Which is good and well to "fix" a computer that cant Run certian things from the web. but (whine) restricted sites still work, they just are not allowed to run crap.
After removing all my "restricted" sites, it then flips this switch FEATURE_LOCALMACHINE_LOCKDOWN , which is pretty cool :-) Because it is like some security guy Stopping all the crap everywhere, disabling the web browsers features. but rather uncalled for seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2013/Jul/119 and 30 seconds later your user can't run flash off of youtube.
08:06
Guys, recomendations between Avast and MSE from microsoft? Here's XP with 512MB of RAM.
Does anyone know if EBOOKWANTS.COM is safe to use?
@Boris_yo MSE is lighter on the system. avast or AVG will be looking harder. either one of them could miss. you cant double up on active scanning. Stuff like Malwarebytes (the free) can just sit there, and be used manually.
@ManInMoon Steer clear of allcaps domain names!
08:22
@ManInMoon isnt it just the usual illegal downloads site? would be as safe as any other. You could always Contact them now, and see how they handle a communications .
i am sure thier business location, and e-mail address are right there in the contact data :-)
Bob
Bob
08:34
09:01
@CanadianLuke Those are probably used to store illegal copies of music files, the most heinous crime there is.
09:16
geez, if these security people were not on the computer seclists.org/fulldisclosure/2013/Jul/index.html , you would walk down the street and every car would have its door open and the engine running :-)
one guy figured out how to (basic) Call someone on an android device using Skype, then bypass the password log-in on the phone.
09:44
woah, the updated timeline view is nice. superuser.com/admin/posts/timeline/625812
ah /admin/ means available only to mods
10:43
@Sathya It's beautiful!
Needs moar dark theme though :P
@OliverSalzburg: I think I've gone through 3 desktop RSS feed readers, and 2-3 web based ones so far ;p
@OliverSalzburg And do you still download MP3s legally?
@JourneymanGeek Well, I've been using Thunderbird for years...
@OliverSalzburg: 3 pane layout
@Boris_yo Yeah, occasionally
10:44
its a lot less efficient when you want to skim through something like 500 rss feeds ;p
(not that thats ever happened. I have a LOT of dead ones)
@JourneymanGeek What 3 panel layout? What are the 3 panels? Is this like the shell thing?
@OliverSalzburg: 3 panels is to have the feed listing on the left, a list of feeds on top, and the article below
like an e mail client
Well, Thunderbird is an email client ;D
I'd rather just have the articles alone, like you had on google reader
Oh, so you don't want 3 panels
10:46
@OliverSalzburg: yeah, and thats also the default for most rss feed readers
YES!
feed demon on magazine mode seems ok
but EOL :/
I was getting slightly confused, because wanting 2 panels was what I took away from your G+ post
Yeah, so let's write up a quick .Net service that periodically pulls RSS feeds and an AngularJS frontend for it
It'll be a cool 8 hours and then it'll be done for sure
this is what I'm using now
its.. acceptable
actually, outside being abandoned by its dev, and freezing once every few days its fine
@Psycogeek Why you would need to figure out this? And you only login once before the rest of logins happen automatically.
@JourneymanGeek So it's not OSS?
@OliverSalzburg: negative
(just for reference so far I've managed to completely break RSS owl, and greatnews)
10:52
Ugh, now I'm confused by the double-negative :P
It is not OSS ;p
@JourneymanGeek Why not use online feed aggregating services?
@Boris_yo: Cause it keeps breaking my heart ;p
@Boris_yo: I was using the old reader - they decided it was too stressful, and dumped most of the google reader refugees
@OliverSalzburg If you download paid MP3s, where is it?
10:54
@Boris_yo I don't pay for MP3s
Wow...
Try to copy a link from the footer of this blog: adafruit.com/blog
@OliverSalzburg But occasionally?
People need to die for constructing something like that
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Thunderbird is pretty customisable
@Boris_yo I don't buy MP3s. I occasionally download MP3s that are freely available
10:58
@Bob: eh, I was bitching about it in general ;p
@OliverSalzburg: the ever expanding sissyphillian footer?
@OliverSalzburg That means you said Mashable needs to die.
@Boris_yo I don't know Mr or Mrs Mashable, but, maybe
@OliverSalzburg the neverending page.
What's not to like about dynamic content? It's there to keep you engaged so you never leave website. Never.
@Boris_yo try this, get about 6 pages down, then realise you need to do a refresh of the page. Then get back to where you were.
11:13
@JourneymanGeek Bestest 2-panel RSS reader for Windows!!
o0
XD
IE?
I might give that a shot. See how badly it crashes and burns ;)
@JourneymanGeek Yeah
What is going on with the Greenshot Imgur upload...
I hate it when conveniences stop working
It's awesome!
And it even has a web browser built in!
@OliverSalzburg where is the Up button? :-) or is that another plug-in
11:26
@Bob: I'll give it a shot on a VM ;p
@Bob: I'll want to test it to see whether it uses the bookmarks in firefox for feeds (which will be messy), or keep it seperate
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek It keeps it separate from the native Thunderbird feeds.
I have quite a few FF profiles. Unless you manually link them (FF Sync?), I don't think it'll share.
@JourneymanGeek There's a Firefox version too: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/bamboo-feed-reader/…
ooh
looks good
Bob
Bob
Judging by the review, I don't think it integrates with FF bookmarks:
> Excellent add-on, but maybe you should add backward compatibility with live bookmarks for firefox sync or you should add your own sync server/integration with exist server. First would be perfect. Anyway, i love it.
11:32
yes. which is promising ;p
now I just need to see if it breaks under the strain ;p
Bob
Bob
Wait, what was wrong with Feedly again? :P
@Bob: not much. The layout is slightly annoying, and I'd prefer a non web based alternative ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek They have a FF addon too, interestingly enough.
though the recent reviews are disappointing.
Bob
Bob
Hm. FF addons are a dime a dozen: addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/brief/…
11:34
yup
lol
I'll probably test most of these ._.
Bob
Bob
This one is integrated with bookmarks. Looks pretty clean, though.
I don't want integrated with bookmarks
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek Any particular reason?
11:38
@Bob: I have over 900 feeds
Bob
Bob
I always thought Live Bookmarks were their own section of the bookmarks.
Not really sure, though.
a lot of them are dead, and need to be cleaned up ;p
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek And you guys bash me for my tabs.
(1704 on my desktop, btw)
@Bob: see, I had a neat solution ;p
but it fell apart.
I'm looking for a backup ;p
Bob
Bob
11:56
@Psycogeek Could you please not post that kind of thing here?
Much less without a warning.
(For everyone else, that first photo is rather gorey)
@Bob sorry i thought everyone did woodshop class.
:10546497 That's slightly inappropriate for our little room
...posting images of crying women
Sweet, my new gravatar is live
@Psycogeek: we did. We never lost ANY fingers
12:49
@Bob: bamboo seems to be pretty good
@Hennes: source?
the art style looks oddly familiar ;p
@Hennes Why cats love so much catnip?
I never met a cat who liked catnip.
I have met ones who actively disliked it
12:52
@Hennes Me neither.
But I never met a cat who doesn't like boxes.
@Hennes Is catnip something like LSD for cat?
I haven't been able to throw away the box of my router for three days because our cat is occupying it.
@slhck: cause cats are assasins. Solid snake obviously has cat DNA
3
@slhck You bought router? Congrats but which one is it?
@Boris_yo I went for a rather cheap TP-Link WDR3600. It was the only 5 GHz router with Gigabit LAN in that price range.
Plus it has 2 USB ports
12:54
@JourneymanGeek So guy from Assassin's Creed likes boxes to?
@JourneymanGeek Ah, that explains why he has so many lives.
@Boris_yo Wait, isn't minecraft full of boxes? An entire universe of it?
The universe is a box.
@slhck What is second USB port for?
a 1U box .;)
12:56
@Hennes Yeah, but Schrödinger already put his cat in.
Heh. I am playing ikariam, I got 5 towns
Oh my god.. solid snake is a... cat
First two are named "Shrodingers" and "cat"
:O
it all makes sense now
3 and 4 are Heisenbergs and Dog
Fifth is waveform
12:57
@Boris_yo One for a hard drive, one for a printer, for example. Or I could flash the router and use an LTE stick.
Finally! 2000 hp on candybox
