@Hennes: remarkably common way of troubleshooting, one reason the proposal to make http 2.0 a binary format is silly ;p
I wonder what he's doing where a regular keyboard is 'too slow'

I can't remember where the link got posted... But about 6 hours ago, I clicked a link for a web page on Arquade, clicked the video, and I've been watching YouTube on that site for the past 6 hours
I can't remember what I originally found though
lol
sounds like me and wikipedia
Just kept looking at related videos
Something like that
06:09
@CanadianLuke That looks cool. Bookmarks
Just something cool... I like that group
Oh what?! I bought $30 worth of games from Steam, and it said I'd get 2 steam trading cards... They were both the Tomb Raider cards. :(

@JourneymanGeek you getting a Visionnaire?

ahh
is it that hard to get one?
oooh, kickstarter is pay with amazon o.O
@JourneymanGeek Credit*
@CanadianLuke: I mean debit card ;p
I have local ATM cards, but nothing I can use online
You can use a debit card for that?
Bob
Bob
06:18
there, pledged
@CanadianLuke sure, I'm using one
there's debit cards you can use like credit cards
Bob
Bob
well, depends on your definition of "debit card"
mine's a "Debit Mastercard", which can act like any other Mastercard
We have Visa, Mastercard, prepaid Visa (like a debit), then debit cards
yup
there's mastercards you can use online, and ones you can't ;p
/me probably will get a proper online usable card when he gets a job
Bob
Bob
@JourneymanGeek would it cost anything?
06:20
@Bob: I think there's an annual fee
Bob
Bob
I used to use prepaid Visas. about 10% extra for the card :(
@JourneymanGeek ah. not while I'm a student, thankfully (though it's account fees; the card itself is technically free)
was considering prepaids
but no real advantage for me
Bob
Bob
@CanadianLuke what exactly is a "debit card" over there anyway?
just for ATMs?
Just for bank machines or purchases. Linked directly to the bank account
Bob
Bob
This was quite helpful.
06:22
@CanadianLuke: our local ATM cards are like that
confusingly, my atm card works like a credit card at physical shops (since my bank isn't linked to NETS - the payment system most of the local banks have used for ages)
Never heard of NETS
its a singapore only thing
The Network for Electronic Transfers (Singapore) Pte Ltd (Abbreviation: NETS; ) NETS was founded in 1985 to establish Singapore’s national PIN Debit scheme, NETS EFTPOS (Electronic Funds Transfer at Point-of-Sale), propelling Singapore into the age of electronic payments. NETS is the scheme operator, processor and acquirer of the service. NETS is owned by Singapore’s largest banks, DBS Bank, OCBC Bank and United Overseas Bank (UOB). @JourneymanGeek I got my fiance one for her birthday. She wasn't impressed. :(

@MichaelFrank: they look good, but the paper is massively finicky
apparently the snobby sorts go for clarefontaine or rhodia ;p
Personally, I'd be happy to find a reliable, cheap source of french grid paper
I have a Rhodia notebook. ;)
(sort of photocopying the one notebook of the stuff I've been hoarding for no apparent reason ;p)
French Grid?
I was amused thats what its called
Also, I don't think I would have ever thought about buying budgeting software from a Steam Summer Sale deal, but 75% off $60 is a pretty decent deal.

Huh, looks more like something out of my high school Japanese class...
09:19
lol
we used big gridded paper in chinese class (I took it in kindergarden)
the stuff I have is not quite like this
It doesn't have the lighter vertical lines
its a clarefontaine
amusing
OOOOH
seems I buy the good stuff without realising it when I get a chance ;p
Getting hang of it. Used Windows AIK to build Vista OS boot image from 3 .WIM files I downloaded from Digital River. Installed Vista with SP1 on first laptop but since it wasn't OEM, some drivers are missing so I had to do searches. Nothing is more tiresome than searching drivers for discontinued Toshiba laptops. They make just too many laptops and then mess up or stop listing downloadable drivers.
OEM license key worked for Vista OS. Seems like as long as I don't change motheboard on laptop, OEM license key that came with it will always work.
I have another Acer laptop with hard drive from lenovo laptop, yet with Vista OEM recovery partition that would never work so I think I just install Vista I downloaded from Digital River. I know finding drivers would be pain.
Windows should find most of the drivers itself.
@MichaelFrank It failed to find driver for GeForce Go 7300, Intel Wi-Fi network card and LAN card. I still have controller question marked listed under ACPI or something which I don't know what it is supposed to be. The only way is to install ALL drivers available from Toshiba website, one by one until it will detect and install drivers for this controller.
Well, not really. If you find out what 'ACPI' is, you can download drivers that would match that device. No point installing drivers for a USB hub if it's clearly not what you're looking for.
@MichaelFrank I know of no way of finding out what ACPI is. Unless maybe I refer to laptop configuration manual which I don't have.
09:32
@MichaelFrank: thats the stuff
You could Google what ACPI is. :)
@JourneymanGeek Ahh yea, do you draw a bit?
not really
I do tend to use diagrams and stuff when working stuff out ;p
I can see how that would be useful. It seems like a strange pad to use just for writing.
I just checked and saw that ACPI device is no longer listed under question mark so it seems Vista update I am currently running fixed this problem.

But there is last thing listed under question mark which is "Mass Storage Controller" and next to it says: "Location: PCI bus 6, device 4, function 2"
Do you have a USB drive plugged in?
09:36
@MichaelFrank Currently Patriot flash drive is plugged in.
I think the more I deal with computers, the more I develop craziness for fixing computers. I become more addicted.
@Hennes Meow
Meowning.
@Hennes Which browser is less memory hungry?
lynx and w3m are quite small
I also just deinstalled Dillo from my server.
And what about these: IE, Chrome, Firefox?
@Bob Yay, I was wondering that myself. I almost fired up Google and it just gets answered by canadian maple luke
09:53
Which of these is less memory hungry?
2 mins ago, by Boris_yo
And what about these: IE, Chrome, Firefox?
@Boris_yo Shudders. Once you know which driver is the right one you do a clean re-installation with only the right drivers? Right?
For me IE is very memory hungry because I only use it inside an extra VM.
I simply do not trust IE.
@Hennes Trust? Why is that? You think IE is the most vulnerable browser?
I also find it hard to use. I look for the bookmarks and they are renamed to some weird thing called favorites. But most things I bookmarks is not a favourite
1) IE old version where very vulnerable (granted, since 8 it has improved a lot)
2) IE was use a lot, so it got a lot of attention from worm/virus makers
Item 2 is not IE's fault, but it is a good reason to use a more exotic browser by default
I can add 3) Not many plugins who fully integrate. Which is a ms decision to keep things closed, clean and safe. It also means no things like greasemonkey.
@Hennes But what happens if you don't know what device is listed under question mark? It could say controller but you have no idea what controller is that. You don't know which driver to download because download page has drivers for many controllers. You could go 1 by 1 and install all drivers for all controllers, but what if you only want to install driver for specific controller and don't want to install drivers for all controllers?
I have answered that several times on the site.
Briefly, get the PCI[e] ID of the hardware.
then look up what it is
09:58
@Hennes With programs like "System Information for Windows by Gabriel Topala"?
No, use device management, hardware ID
@Mokubai Good day to you sir.
start, run, devmgmt.msc
@Hennes Understand but what can you make out of information in Hardware IDs? According to your picture, I don't understand how information displayed there can identify device for me.
TYpe the HW ID in google
Or in a PCI database
10:04
@Hennes PCI database is a website, right?
YEs
@Hennes Interesting tip, did not know that. I guess without internet, it would be impossible to know.
Without internet we would still use CDs for installing drivers...
Each vendor has its own unique ID
PCI\ven_13C1 means that the vendor of the card I selected is 3ware.
Vendor 8086 is Intel
Vendor 1002 is ATI (now AMD)
Etc etc
@Boris_yo Well, you would have the manual. And you can look at the chips
Or boot FreeBSD and do a pciconf list verbose
Or boot linux and do a lspci -v
@Hennes I think as my Vista update keeps running, it automatically settles out missing drivers problem in device manager.
Those come with build in databases
I think a similar question has been asked quite a few times on Super User
Maybe we should make a nice proper well written canonical answer to it
10:09
@Hennes Your level of PC knowledge is clearly higher than mine. Please train me master. I want to become your apprentice.
First, thy shalt get a IBM XT and learn how to use non-PNP ISA cards.
NExt thou shalt bandage thy hands.
(ISA cards usually had sharp parts)
lol Clippy...
@TomWijsman Hi, how is your day going?
Look mom, more memory:
@Boris_yo Same as every day. :D
@Hennes This card is soooo long... Circa...?
10:11
XT era
Probably 256KiB ish
@TomWijsman I actually have bi-polar disorder so I am different every day...
Bob
Bob
@Hennes Heh. vendor 8086
@Hennes 256KiB video card?
No main memory
Sometimes it came on boards. Sometimes you plugged in the chips
Then it advanced and you got zips.
@Hennes I once thought I knew a lot about PC until I stumbled upon hard drive adapter in IBM computer. Did not know why hard drive needed adapter.
10:13
Then it advanced more and you got 30 pins SIMMs
then 72 pin SIMMs
@Hennes This is actually memory? That big?! Woah...
then DIMMs (either SDRAM in most PCs or EDO in MACs)
@Hennes You have CompTIA certification man?
Nope. No cenrtification whatsoever
Just a few decades of experience
Or CompCIA :D
10:15
Hmm, I actually had this card in my 386sx-16Mhz so I could play sounds (PC came without sound)
@Hennes Can you upload your experience to my brain please? That would be huge leverage and save me time and hassles of obtaining knowledge.
@Bob Right click, inspect element, remove element.
Bob
Bob
@Tom phone
Buy a better phone!
10:16
Notice the 40 pins 'IDE' connector on the sound card.
Bob
Bob
I do that on desktop.
I think it needed its own driver, and was slow.
But it allowed you to use two harddrives on the motherboards (single) IDE bus and move the CDROM to the soundcard
Bob
Bob
@Hennes argh trying to get sound working under DOS (games, what else)
DosBox rocks
But having a littl ebackground as to why you manaully want to set IRQ's and DMA is helpful
Bob
Bob
shudder
was too young at the time :P
10:19
@Bob I don't remember loading sound drivers in DOS. I remember each game had setup.exe where you could choose your sound card from lost of known sound cards. You had to set DMA, IRQ etc...
I remember getting a piece of paper. Writing down which cards supported which IO addresses, which IRQs and which DMA's. Then solve it so each card could have its own set without overlap.
Bob
Bob
@Boris setup.exe? on DOS? snicker
@Bob Yes, configuration setup. You could configure sound, video card, modem etc.
mom.exe and magic.exe (one was the game Master of magic , one was the setup file. Also woe if you have too much memory, it would not run.
Hey do you remember old games that would run fine on 486, 586 IBMs but fly on hyperdrive to such extent you could not play if you played them on modern Pentiums?

Example? Hyper Race or something game where you had to race on your space ship. Lol I remeber starting round and in 3-5 secondws it ended. Everything on screen was running at 1000FPS. 3 laps in 3-5 seconds.
Bob
Bob
10:25
turbo mode...
I think it was in sync of your processor's speed.
My first PC had a turbo mode.
Bob
Bob
Also, the crt unit in turbopascal
@Bob Yes, it was like turbo mode. But you did not need to choose "Turbo Mode" anywhere. Turbo mode was something that would occur on its own when playing on high-end PCs.
Well, the first PC I claimed as my own.
I also discovered disk compression and was amazed that I could fit more stuff on it!
Bob
Bob
10:27
@boris the purpose of having turbo was to allow you to slow the system down for legacy programs
@Bob Was it special button on chassis?
Bob
Bob
I.e. the act of disabling turbo
@MichaelFrank Yeah me too discovered what I can do with ZIP. Then I discovered ARJ compresion which was even more powerful and started to compress the heck out of what I could.
@Bob I did not know much about it at time and thus could not play some games. But there was always 2 games that ran fine on any compter: Shadow Warrior, Doom, Duke Nukem, Hexen, Heretic.
Bob
Bob
zip? try arc.
@Bob What about ARJ?
Sim City 2000 was my first strategy game! Then came Red Alert 1 and Carmageddon.
Dang, these memories are my nostalgie. I cherish them. I also had PS1 at that time and played Tekken 2.
Bob
Bob
10:37
I believe arc was before zip and arj
@Bob But if it was that good, it probably took a lot of time to compress and decompress?
Windows 7 tells me that it cannot read many files from source disk and there are many files. I think many files are corrupted and I wonder if it is because of corrupted FAT structure or bad sectors. Running scandisk would take day for results.
I remember being impressed by sim city on the Amiga. It supported multiple desktops.
I used to open the screen with the graphs, then drag it down so it only covered the lower part of the main screen.
(An Amiga allowed you to drag the 'desktop' in the same way as a the windows.
And you could have different resolutions and different colour depths on different screens
But display those different screens at the same time
@Hennes Seems like pioneer for modern economic strategies?
Sim City 1 was it right?
Aye. The original :)
@Hennes After playing Sim City 2000 and seeing original, I dislike it probably because of higher standards that Sim City 2000 showed me.
10:50
SC1 was fun. But I would have loved more screen realestate
@Hennes Cold caller just called again so I told that I decided I am not interested and hung up. I think I learned the lesson where bottom line is to take initiative and hang up. Otherwise not hanging up, tells the cold caller that you are open and still show interest.
I tend to fake interest .
uh huh
That is interesting
And what was your name again?
Where did you go to school?
What did you study
Which one didyou like best
DO you mind a stranger asking all those questions? CLICK
@Hennes Stranger? What of it was survey company? Does that still make them stranger?
If they are cold calling me and asking me things like 'who is your electrical provider' Did you know we can do it cheaper, etc etc. Then yes.
@Hennes But then you ask who are you that offer me cheaper variant?
10:56
No, I try to get personal.
@Hennes To get personal? What do you mean? You ask the name of cold caller?
Name, place she want to study, what she studied, which hair colour she has, what eye colour (most get nicely uncomfortable at this stage), ...
Okay I get you. You kind of let cold caller be in your place and ask if cold caller would mind be asked all these questions?
My goal was to let her hang up on me. :)
@Hennes Ah you made it a boiler room for cold caller? Or grilling cold caller?
"What did you prepare today for lunch"?
"I prepared soup with onion and beef and garlic etc."
"Sir, how is that relevant to all this"?
"Just wanted to know if you like preparing soups and how if you do..."
"By the way I gone to shopping mall and bought 1KG of vinnies..."
"Sir, can we stay on topic please?"
"Yes but only if you tell me what is your diet and what do you prepare every day."
11:11
hmm tempted to get this dx.com/p/…
has anyone cloned sim cards before?
@Gowtham No but I wanted one so I can fast edit contacts on SIM card because through the phone it would take more time.
Why you want exactly this one? There are many on DX while this has small number of reviews.

I heard from someone here that Vista now has additional SP1 updates that no longer make it bad OS.
I heard the same thing
@JourneymanGeek So you plan to revert back to Vista?
naw
why rely on backports when you can get the updates upstream? ;p
@JourneymanGeek What is backport?
means that they do updates for a newer version on an older version
12:25
@JourneymanGeek Do you know why they removed sidebar like it was available on Vista from Windows 7?
@Boris_yo: nope
Bob
Bob
12:44
@Boris_yo "Platform Update"
it's not SP1
it was after SP1
13:33
hmm
one of the printer ink refill squeezies went empty
which is yay
since for some reason I have three sets of ink
@Bob Platform Update is something bigger than service pack?
How can you burn bootable image of OS to USB flash drive? Is this possible?
@Boris_yo Don't burn your USB drives. You will regret it later!
I'm not sure about vista
for 7 and 8, there's something called the windows 7 usb download tool
13:59
@OliverSalzburg Burn? Why am I allowed to burn CDs DVDs but not USB drives?
Yes I actually recall there was something. But I am aware of tools that allow to write images to USB flash drives, at least trial versions.

But logically you cannot burn USB flash drives because this will reformat them, correct? I mean if image is bootable and is 3.2GB then this is the capacity that will be on USB flash drive. You can't place image of 3.2GB on 16GB USB flash drive and still retain its full 16GB capacity. Image will not work correctly or work at all.
er it will
it will reformat and make the drive bootable and copy over the relevant files
not do a dd style image
@OliverSalzburg Hear ye, hear ye, hear ye! Comet ISON is expected to pass near earth on August 2013! It will be so bright that you will be able to see it in the broad daylight!
@JourneymanGeek You mean USB flash drive will retain its 16GB capacity, yet have this image on it and it will work okay?
yeah
but anything on it will get deleted
@JourneymanGeek You aware of tool that can do that?
for vista, no
I've never installed or run vista
14:08
@JourneymanGeek For Windows 7 then? You mean tool that works in Windows 7, yeah?
@JourneymanGeek Know this method?
14:22
1st laptop - 1.5GB of RAM for Vista
2nd laptop - 2GB of RAM for Vista

Is 2GB minimum?
no idea
I've never run vista
while 1 gig is the "minimum" you really want 2
ram is like money, you want as much as you can, and you never want to run out ;p
@tapped-out: superuser.com/a/619653/10165 <- its GDDR5 and GDDR seems to be a different beast from regular ram.
and the real, politically incorrect answer is "PUT DOWN THE SCREWDRIVER, AND STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER"
@JourneymanGeek Listen how Futurama sounds in russian: adultmult.ru/html/futurama_715.html
14:37
@JourneymanGeek Heh I don't know... We spoke about Futurama previously and I just wondered if it is broadcasted in Singapore or you watch it online somewhere?
nope
I've never watched futurama ;p
@JourneymanGeek And you don't want to?
lol
so many TV shows, not enough time ;p
WH13 just wrapped up, and watching continuum
@JourneymanGeek I think most US TV shows are broadcasted in Singapore?
oh, they are
just easier to watch them at my own pace
14:40
I see now how America wants to grow their entertainment empire to dumb down the rest of earth's population... Sad. They even show some of it here but I never watch.
I want to retain my critical thinking in order to not become part of sheeple, I want to stay logical, self-sufficient person.
lol Clippy heh...
*It looks like you're trying to retain your critical thinking in order to not become part of sheeple, you want to stay logical, self-sufficient person.

Would you like help?*
At least Clippy is on my side!
shrug
Continuum isn't american ;)
@JourneymanGeek Still THEY own most of media...
14:43
They own out money, they own us!
@wek Hello. Questions sir?
@JourneymanGeek Weird but in Control Panel I have noticed settings for Tablet PC. I also detected there is related service running. Why would I need those?
@abdelsaid Hello?
Weird how people arrive and leave this place without saying a thing...
lol
You obviously scared them off
wek
wek
14:46
@Boris_yo:Thanks for asking for that. I wass just to see chat as I got previledge now to chat. But here is my link to question superuser.com/questions/619635/…
They are not acting on behalf their own interests. I think they bear government interests.
@wek: we don't normally link our own questions here
;p
But if we do...
;)
... we prefer them without links.
@wek: maybe its not in the repos
wek
wek
@JourneymanGeek Ohh sorry for that but I am really fed up asking
14:48
try messing with apt-cache search ?
wek
wek
Ok one more time
apt-cache search (thing)
Apparently I am not the go-to person when question involves Linux...
in this case I'd try mozilla I think
wek
wek
apt-cache search mozilla gave some result , but I dont know what to do with that
14:51
could you pastebin the output?
wek
wek
ok
(don't post it here, it makes the chatroom messy)
apt-cache search basically lets you search through the whole list of packages - it gives you a package name and description
hmm
nothing useful there
wek
wek
ok
14:53
how about apt-cache search iceweasel ?
I think changing hard drive mode from AHCI to IDE causes Windows to crash on boot.
(that list is packagename - description - you can use apt-get install to install those packages)
I'd also probably look at my sources.list, but I'm unfamiliar with kali linux
wek
wek
only one result
@Boris_yo: oh, that seems likelt
wek
wek
libmozjs18d - Mozilla SpiderMonkey JavaScript library
14:55
@wek: ok, for some wierd reason, you just don't have iceweasel in your repository
@JourneymanGeek Dang, I think AHCI is slower than IDE... And changing it assumes OS reinstall... Gulp.
@wek: next thing to do is to compare your sources.list to a pristine copy
wek
wek
and how to do that
it should be at /etc/apt/source.list
well, boot up the distro on a livecd, see what it has, then check it against what you have installed
