If nothing else, we have that going for us
> Achievement: Not Dead Yet
Our story picks up as the party purchases a boat, briefly encountering a representative of the city's criminal element, and Brune makes an emotional decision.
Feb 1 at 21:13, by Sciborg
Brune kisses the photograph. Then, in one swift motion, he rips it in half and tosses the pieces out into the sea, watching them twist and flutter down to the water. Then, calmly, he rolls back towards his friends.
It's early afternoon on Wednesday.
19:03
"Did you get a mooring as well, Brune?" Jack says apprehensively
"A what?" Brune slows to a stop near the group, unruffled, and looks around the marina, hoping for a lower access point.
@Sciborg You'll have to go a ways down to find a ramp. Someone may have to bring the boat over there as well.
Darri has graduated to the pepper packets
Brune makes a nonspecific hrrmph of annoyance in his throat at that realization. He's hoping Jack knows what to do from here.
Those are a little harder to just pour and swallow.
19:09
they also make him cough
@Sciborg "Unlike a car," Jack explains slowly, "You typically need to tie your boat up somewhere. So you did get a mooring, right?"
"Ah... no. I did not." Brune clears his throat awkwardly. "I suppose we could ask around?"
The Grasping Arm bobs below, still tied up.
hacking sounds as pepper goes down the wrong tube
"Are you alright, Darri?"
19:14
"Easy there, lad." Brune thumps Darrion gamely on the back.
Then, mostly for something to do while Jack examines their newest purchase, he rolls off to go see if he can find a better place to tie off.
Jack turns back to Brune, and shouts after him "Well it is tied up right now at least!"
"Aye aye, Captain!" Brune shouts back, cheerily.
Darri waves a hand. "I'm fine. As fine as I can be, anyways."
A little ways down the dock, you find a section that extends out a bit in the water, with the boats bobbing just under the surface of the dock. You could probably tie the boat up here and then either carry Brune + chair (together or separately) onto the boat, or try to set up some sort of ramp.
Brune slows to a stop, and, mostly out of curiosity, looks at the other boats - he never had an occasion to come down here before.
19:21
"Do we even need to take it anywhere right now... Do we know what the plan is?"
"I think the university runs a sailing class. For fun and whatever. Wonder if I can spot their boat."
@Sciborg In this area, on the opposite side as the industrial sections, it's mostly smaller boats; you see a smattering of motorboats of varying sizes, a few obviously unkept and dirty. There's one larger boat docked there as well, a clean, white, double-decker boat that looks like it could be a ferry of some sort. The name emblazoned on it says "The Elephant's Trunk".
Brune raises an amused eyebrow - now that's the kind of boat his father would have been proud of. Two grasping arms, one of land and one of sea, he muses, and starts wheeling back towards his friends.
"There's a lower dock down that way where we could board," he calls, approaching. "I don't suppose we're all keen on braving the Great Sea today."
@bobble There appears to be one sailboat - it stands out, since the wind around here tends to be upredictable, and so sailboats aren't very common. The university logo would presumably be on the sail, but it's currently furled.
"What's option B?"
19:32
@Sciborg "Not if we don't need to..." In his younger days, Jack would have risked jumping onto the boat, but he resists the urge
"We could return to Antonelli, tell him about Zakkai, and give him the cipher, if we decide he is trustworthy." Brune shrugs. "We could go to the university and speak with Bardot about whether her action was successful. We could have Alex rig something up to try and speak with Benni. We could do many things."
He gestures to the boat. "Or we could get in that boat and go see the island for ourselves."
"What do you want to do?"
Darri looks genuinely interested in Brune's response
"What would I like to do?" Brune sounds bitter. "I would like to go back to that damned church and plunge a knife into that mad priest's heart. But doing so would be... not ideal, given our current circumstances."
His tone implies there's another thing he would like to do, but he just tore that thing up and flung it into the sea.
@Sciborg "May I suggest, if we want to scout the island we go after it's fully dark?"
Brune eyes him, clearly interested in that idea. "Not a bad plan."
19:40
"How long until the end of the world? Remind me again."
(170 hours, give or take - Wednesday night, one week from now)
"Let's see, it's... Wednesday, is it not?" Brune does some mental math. "Seven days."
(hopefully I will be able to make an appearance in 15-20m, I'm so sorry yall)
"If we waited until nightfall, and took the boat out..." Brune looks warily at Jack. "You've seen the island in your dreams, just as I have. It's surrounded by rocks. Do you think you could navigate?"
Darrion also looks at Jack
19:50
Kiko looks a bit skeptical at the prospect. "In the dark? When you've never been there in person before, just relying on dreams? Sounds like quite the risk."
"...True." Brune looks askance at the Grasping Arm. "And our boat may be... less than seaworthy."
"Yeah, so before taking it on any night trips it might be a good idea to take it for a test drive, or whatever you say about boats."
"I... No... Not unless I had... Night-vision goggles. A full beam lamp is too risky"
"Do you think the boat is more seaworthy, or me?"
"Like, for everyone to get on and stay above the water? Probably the boat."
19:55
"Yes, but consider: I have never sunk."
"I'm not so sure we can say that confidently about the boat."
"We could take it for a, ah... test drive, with the unsinkable Darrion aboard. Around the marina a few times, just to check the engine." Brune sounds like he's badly trying to conceal his desire to joyride around in a boat for a while.
@bobble "I can pilot a boat... But I can't pilot you...?"
"You sure about that? You've captained parts of this quest, at least."
"Jack has certainly piloted me quite a few times," Brune says, a bit jokingly, clearly recalling the times where Jack has helped push his chair.
"If we are going out, it makes sense to take only two to start with... Oh I have, I guess..?" Jack is nautically minded right now and not really listening
20:01
Brune falls silent to let Jack think, looking around while he waits to make sure nobody is eavesdropping on them. He didn't really like the look of the man who sold them the boat.
@AncientSwordRage "Not it."
@Sciborg Make a Spot Hidden check. Different levels of success will grant different results.
40 vs. 45 for Spot Hidden.
Regular success. You've caught the attention of one person who seems to be working on their boat, moored a little ways over; they glance over in your direction every couple minutes while apparently swapping out a wooden bench. Nobody else immediately catches your attention as paying you any notice.
Brune eyes them to see if they look familiar, trying to assuage the faint spark of paranoia - they are a fairly eclectic bunch, and he's not a stranger to being stared at, but still.
Nothing from this distance strikes you as familiar.
20:10
Brune waits a while to see if Jack is done thinking yet, and then, unable to resist his curiosity - as usual - he begins casually wheeling over towards them, figuring that he'll just pretend to be a new boat owner wanting advice.
"Can I help?" Darri asks, watching Brune's gaze track the stranger
"Stay there," Brune says over his shoulder.
"I'm very good at that." Darri grabs a cheese packet (playing it safe) and dumps it into his mouth
@Mithical "I think I'd need a stylish gunner to accompany perhaps" and Jack turns from Kiko to Darrion
@Sciborg As you approach, the figure resolves itself into a burly woman, hammering nails into the boat to keep the new bench in place. She doesn't look particularly familiar. She sets the hammer down and raises an eyebrow as you wheel over, but doesn't say anything.
20:16
"That's a magnificent boat you have there," Brune says, valiantly attempting to break the ice. He gestures towards the Grasping Arm in the distance. "I don't suppose you're familiar with the sailing around here?"
"Could be. Depends who's askin'."
"A rather foolish tosspot who made an ill-advised boat purchase, in this case," Brune says, lightly. "Is yours for fishing, or just for leisure?"
"'s for transportin' stuff. Not many folks takin' joyrides 'round here. Whassa problem with yer boat?"
(I'm back)
"Nothing out of the realm of repair, I suspect." Brune looks at her boat. "I suppose I was just hoping for advice on navigating the Great Sea, if you're the sort who has made the trek before. Particularly any advice on going out to the island."
20:24
While Brune is conversing, Jack asks Alex, "Do think you could check the onboard radio and electronics, if we find you a way down?"
(backreading, one moment)
"Those schoolin' idiots are the only ones going out for fun. You must've spent too much time with 'em. Stay 'way from the island. Too many rocks. Only those people -" she jerks a thumb at the ferry - "get through. Must've made a deal with old Jones. Everyone else 'ventually ends up on the bottom. Also don't get caught by the fog."
Alex peers over the edge at the group's new toy. "You sure it has any? It looks a bit... meager."
"Noted." Brune looks at the ferry curiously. "Thank you."
She picks up the hammer again and resumes her work. Bang, bang, bang, bang....
20:29
@Ginger "Normally you need some kind of way to communicate with other boats, especially the big ones. "
I suspect that a deal with "old Jones" is more real than she knows, Brune muses, rolling off and heading back towards the Elephant's Trunk - now he wants to look for any signs of its owner.
"Fair enough"
"So, did we perchance get a registration card with our purchase?"
"But who knows how they do things here. Maybe you just put a drop of blood in the ocean, say a prayer and mermaids carry you about!" Jack is showing his frustration a little now
@Sciborg Most of the boat is covered by black tarps. The hull of the ferry is painted white, and looks like it's regularly maintained. The name is painted in a dark color that on closer inspection seems to be a dark green. There's very little else to go on at the moment.
Brune eyes the dark green writing for a while, then rolls back towards the others.
20:35
".......or an owner's manual?"
"There's the man to ask," Jack says
"Uh-huh. Brune, were you given any identifying information at all when you purchased this thing?"
"Only the name, I'm afraid." Brune slows to a stop. "I suspect our transaction was a bit, ah, under the table."
@Sciborg "I wonder if this place even has a dockmaster..."
Alex makes an exasperated noise which should be very familiar to Brune by this point. "Seriously? Are you sure it's even seaworthy? And, like, not stolen?"
They shuffle to the side, looking for a registration number on the hull.
20:40
"Not a clue. We may have other problems. According to that woman repairing her boat, the only boat that ever makes it to the island is that ferry there -" Brune motions to the white boat. "The Elephant's Trunk. All other boats get caught on the rocks or pulled under. She implied the owner may have a deal with the, ah... entity that must not be named."
@AncientSwordRage You would have found this out when doing research over the past few weeks; any authorities related to the docks are only concerned with the industrial shipping and fishing boats. Nobody cares about the smaller craft - they basically come and go as they please.
Jack suspects that Alex is everybit as frustrated as he is, but Jack is trying not to be angry with Brune again.
@Ginger Nill.
Of course.
There may once have been something, but it's too scratched and faded to tell for certain.
20:42
Noticing Alex's shuffle "Registration numbers would be on the inside for a smaller vessel"
Are there, perchance, marks or adhesive from where a registration number would have been?
guess that answers that question
"I sure hope there's an owner's manual in whatever a boat's version of a glove compartment is!"
Darri is sort of useless in this situation
He got everyone to show up and now all he knows how to do is stand awkwardly making side comments and eating cheese packets
So who's actually getting in the boat and inspecting its various parts? :)
"I still have assets available to me, should the need arise. We could look for a better vessel..." Brune hedges.
"I don't even want to know how much you paid for this. Let's at least make sure it turns on, eh?"
20:44
@Ginger "Agreed. Volunteers for deckhands? Alex? Darri?"
Brune nods, thinking wearily that he'll have to liquidate his retirement fund if they need a bigger boat. Not that he's going to need it anymore, at this rate.
"...I'll let you go first."
@Ginger Jack goes first, cane clutched under his arm as he makes his way aboard
(is it lower than the pier or..?)
You'll have to climb down the ladder and then get in.
"Darrion." Brune looks over at him. "You can message with Dr. Bardot, can't you?"
20:49
Jack clambers down awkwardly favouring his good side
You step off the latter into the boat, your weight causing the boat to rock back and forth. There's a small amount of water in the boat, so your shoes get a little wet. The fuel gauge shows about half full.
"And tell her what?"
"Tell her -" Brune hesitates, debating what to say. "Tell her that we've spoken with her friend recently, and that we'd like to speak to her soon. And, ah - you still have those goggles, don't you?"
@Mithical Jack looks for the bilge bump, but doesn't use it. He just wants to make sure it's there. Then he does a cursory check over everything he thinks should be there
"Yep" (I think) Darri fishes a hand around in his bag to find them
20:55
"Can I see them for a moment?" Brune says - his voice a bit shaky, but determined.
@AncientSwordRage You don't see one. It may be a bucket sort of situation.
(assuming I have it) Darrion passes them over, carefully not looking through the lenses
@Mithical Jack winces. Even the smallest fishing bots he's been out on, the ones which are just glorified canoes with an outboard motor had some kind of crude pump.
You pass the goggles to Brune. They glint green in the sunlight.
Brune holds them carefully in his hands, twisting them idly between his fingers. He braces himself, and then swiftly puts them over his eyes and looks at Alex, and then the boat - in that order.
21:00
Alex's figure appears surrounded by the other figure - pale, fleshy, and toothy. It struggles around their form, as you've seen in the past. Not much has changed. The boat looks the same, but the water around it takes on a shimmering green quality.
Brune stares in horror at the Spawn for a moment; it's much worse than how Darrion described it. He starts to swiftly rip the goggles off - and then hesitates, one moment longer, to look down at himself, even though a part of him screams not to.
Noticing Brune's expression, Alex cocks their head. "Something eating you?"
2
(and on that amazing line, can we call it?)
You look down. Your feet sit there, as useful as ever. Your arms are the steady, practiced hands of a surgeon. Two questions that Mick will have to answer: Are Brune's hands still blood-red, and does he have a heart?
does he have a WHAT
21:09
(:
how can you end session with a question like THAT :p
ty all :)
i was just thinking i'd get to see the old name of the boat oh my god
lmao
