Brune massages his brow with the palm of his hand, trying to sound reasonable, authoritative and not absolutely terrified. "Foul play, certainly. Very nasty business. Who else have we established was in the hospital last night besides the three of us?"

"I can tell you a bunch of students who were at a pizza party"

"Foul play? D'ya think there'd be something on 'er medical records?"

Brune frowns. "Perhaps. We don't yet know her name, or if she has visited the hospital before for other medical conditions. Shall we ask?"

Brune lowers his voice. "I don't believe we should confront anyone with Dr. Antonelli around, assuming he may be involved. In any case, I did tell Dr. Klaus I was planning to pick up some items from my office. I think it would be best if we discussed private matters in there?"

Brune nods in apparent relief and hastily rolls towards his office, clearly relieved to be out of the lobby and away from the mess.

As before, the office is neatly organized, with many objects strangely marked by masking tape. Brune quickly rolls over to his desk, pulls open a drawer, and begins rummaging around, gesturing for the door to be closed. "Mr. Darrion, we must examine that crime scene, but I do not want to impose on your personal safety by having you do something potentially dangerous. And there is quite a bit of security present. Does anyone have ideas for getting a closer look at that cadaver?"

Darrion looks up from his phone, grinning, and manages a "mmm", not quite having tuned back into the conversation

"Not really Doc.."

"Given that Dr. Klaus was the examining professional, I assume it hasn't gone farther than the hospital cold storage. And for that matter, the corpse you discovered on the beach may also be worth looking at." Brune eyes the two of them. "Does the idea of sneaking down there concern you?"

Brune tilts his head meaningfully in Darrion's direction.

"Cold storage? If we need access, I could get us down in a jiffy - still have a guest-access card from the last time I did a favor for a med student mate o' mine"

In the meantime, over in a small office cramped with assorted technical equipment, an Atlassian Statuspage is showing a "major outage" for over an hour now, as the student medical records hosted by the hospital are for some reason unavailable. An attempt to SSH into the server fails. Alex, you might have to either get someone to physically handle the device or get over there yourself.

"I assume you have the stomach for this task?" Brune steeples his fingers together, his eyes repeatedly flicking towards the door to check for eavesdroppers. "And you would have a plausible explanation should you be caught?"

the server in question was overdue for a full system update, so Alex decides it's a good excuse to go babysit that as well

The tape and onlookers will be a problem, but I may come up with something. There must be something there that is worth examining." Brune drums his fingers on the desk as he thinks. "And we should meet back here in... a half hour?"

Alex dutifully hands over their driver's license

Realizing everyone has gathered back over there and is going to see them immediately, Brune hastily aims at the door as if he's just on his way out, tapping Jack's arm frantically and muttering, "Well, there goes that plan."

The skin around the eyelids has been torn open, adding to the gruesome sight, with visible redness around them that hasn't yet faded. The irises are a faded green.

Brune looks up sharply at the voice, and spots Alex. "Oh," he says, surprised; the face swims around in his mind for a moment in search for a name to connect with, and finally lands on Alex something who wears plain T-shirts. "Alex. You're from the school. We've spoken before, haven't we? You mind the servers downstairs."

Kiko would probably find this fascinating, Darrion thinks, checking all angles.

Brune seems to be getting an idea in his head now, and escorting Alex inside gives him an excuse to go back in the building again, so he falls into line casually alongside them. "There's been a death in the building. I am unsure if I'm at liberty to disclose details."

Then, with a bit of a searching look, "You wouldn't happen to know anything about unusual power surges, would you?"

Darrion lays the tape along one side of the body, clearly measuring out the blood splatter distance, and snaps that picture too.

@Sciborg The officer rolls their eyes and ushers Alex through, clearly not concerned enough to bother checking anything else.

"Hmm, I might. I did a bit of electrical engineering back in the day"

"Mr. Rivers here is... assisting me in some matters. I don't suppose you would know where the security footage from last night would be located on your servers, would you?"

"Security footage? That's not exactly within my purview, I'm just a glorified database manager." Alex mulls it over.

"Well, I'm assisting in some other bureaucratic matters for this death investigation - routine, of course - and I was asked to inquire." Brune sounds casual enough, but his eyes keep flicking to Jack. "Perhaps we could take a look, make sure nothing is unusual."

Darrion's fingers hover over a microtransaction powerup to just finish this one level, but then he sighs and closes the app instead.

You've found an elevator, gotten to the correct floor, and found your way there. Alex knows the way from the stairs, so it took a bit of wandering, but Brune, Jack, and Alex are now at the data center. It's been 25 minutes since Darrion went off to cold storage and Brune and Jack went to the waiting area.

Brune rolls out of the elevator in evident relief that he doesn't have to go through the usual, very familiar song and dance of someone suggesting the stairs in his presence and then awkwardly having to apologize. "Let's make this quick, we have a companion waiting for us in my office and I don't want to leave them alone up there long."

Alex nods vigorously in assent

It's... not small. There are the hospital's servers, and the backup servers, and the medical record storage backups, and the administration backups, and the data security equipment, and the physical security equipment... you're looking at a full floor full of stacked electronics.

You know that the student records are off in one corner, but finding the security footage and getting it off will be its own challenge.

Brune surveys the server room in awe, clearly having never had a reason to come down here before. "This is... quite magnificent."

Alex, in a rare example of forethought, remembered to put a red sticker on their server, and goes hunting for it now

The number of cables running overhead and into the ceiling and floor is a bit astounding.

I will arbitrarily say that if you're half an hour late (i.e. when he checks back in with Kiko) then the notes will be done.

"I think the drives are a loss, which sucks; I'll have to come back later and check to be sure"

Brune raises his voice to be heard again. "Mr. Rivers, I feel I should check on Darrion in the meantime. Can I trust you not to get our new friend into trouble?"

@bobble Your phone buzzes with some complains on a groupchat about a power outage in one of the dorm buildings.

"Oh, I'm very trustworthy! I usually solve more problems than I cause, at least."

Brune dutifully rolls outside to head back for the elevator, then stops cold. The sight of the winding, dark hallways suddenly pushes into his mind and reminds him of the dream. He grimaces and hastily speeds to the elevator as fast as he can, heart rattling slightly in his chest.

Assuming nothing goes awry on the journey, he'll head back to the office to see if Darrion is there.

Brune turns them over frantically, looking for any signs of redness.

There are small red patches on the ends of his fingers and his thumb, looking like a minor rash.

They look calloused but well maintained, the nails are short but not from biting (plus what Mith said)

There is a distinctive wavy pattern to the rash, however, that matches what you saw in Darrion's picture.

Brune stares in a panic at the red patches, brain racing a thousand miles an hour. "Jack, these are the same marks we found on that poor lady's body. Did you get these from touching that seaweed?"
