00:00 - 22:0022:00 - 00:00

22:00
"Turned you down for what?" *looks over at the bird* "And the gull seems to be having fun to me. He seemed quite interested in the food when he landed on my fist."
*as the chaos ensues, leans over to Johnny and whispers in Halfling* He's not from around here. He only arrived here about two weeks ago. The locals don't know much about him.
Matlock reaches out and clicks his fingers, and the seagull suddenly turns as if by magic and flies to perch gently on his hand. He feeds it little bits of seaweed roll and pets its head tenderly. "There, there, little one. No need to be frightened."
(in Halfling) Cool. I don't know you either.
Can I roll for arcana to try to understand what Matlock just did?
or is that insight?
Arcana works, sure
bleagh 3+0
[I prefer the straight-up approach here:] *finally sits down at the chair* "How did you do that?"
22:05
The seagull settles down on Matlock's shoulder, and he scratches its head gently. "Birds are lovely creatures. I didn't want it panicking and hurting itself."
"Of course. But not why, how. You said you were a soldier. How does a soldier have such influence over the birds?"
"Did the birds go through basic training and listen to the ranking officer?"
ping-pong-watches the conversation
"Oh, you pick up a thing or two." He dodges the question. "I suppose I should be apologizing, though, for bringing you here for selfish pretenses. If you're in the area and need anything, kindly let me know."
is hungry, looks around for the waitress, the way people do in restaurants and on train platforms, as if that'll make her come faster
*grudgingly leans back* "Selfish pretenses? Did I miss a conversation here?"
22:08
The waiter finally returns with your food, and sets it down on the table.
"Matlock here wants to know if we can help him recover stolen goods for a third party. I said I wasn't interested, since the third party is, quote, dangerous, unquote."
"Thanks." to the waitress
rolling perception on the food. want to avoid any seagull poop ;P
10+3=13
The food is, thankfully, un-pooped on :P
2
[actually more to check if it's poisoned but yeah]
Not poisoned either, to your knowledge.
22:11
oh shoot. My last roll was d8, I forgot, these rolls are supposed to be d20, right?
So can I reroll arcana to understand what Matlock did with the bird?
you can reroll - i should have reminded, sorry
No, you mentioned it this evening, I should've remembered. 8+0 arcana -- still not good
If it was a spell, it's not one you are familiar with or have seen before, and it didn't seem to require verbal components.
22:14
*takes a bite* "Sounds interesting, actually. What is this dangerous third party? What's been stolen?" *to Matlock* "If we - or I - help you with this, what, to be frank, do we get in return?"
[I'm sorry Mick, I get the feeling we're delaying your Epic Storyline with wrestling and seagull shenanigans :P]
[nah :P this is the intended D&D experience]
[oh good, I was worried too]
"I will reward you very handsomely, I promise." Matlock hesitates. "I will leave the details for when I trust you more closely, but to put it bluntly, this thief has stolen a dragon egg, and the owner of that egg is very keen to have it back. Understandably, of course."
"And where do you come in to the picture?"
(isn't he broke?)
22:20
"I was... unfortunate enough to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Hence the need to flee my home and hide here."
He winces. "Can I leave it there?"
starts eating
"...sure. I can understand not wanting to get into backgrounds too much, even if it's only about two weeks ago *casual drop*."
grimaces, the food is awful
He sighs. "Very astute of you. You noticed I don't belong."
*takes a bite, disagrees with Johnny, it's not bad*
22:22
[sure... you got the casserole]
The waiter comes over and shows Matlock the bill. He nods, fumbles in his pocket and emerges with two gold, placing it in the waiter's hand. The waiter lights up and hurries off.
"Anyway, the way you were with that seagull, you can't be all bad. It certainly sounds like an interesting offer, and I'm willing to consider it."
(in Halfling) "And apparently a generous tipper too, if the waitress's reaction is any indication."
He nods. "But you have reservations, I'm sure. I promise you that once I get the egg back, I will return it to its rightful owner. What amount of treasure will it take for us to make a deal?"
(also in Halfling) "Aye, the reward doesn't hurt either, I have to admit."
22:24
(isn't he broke????)
(in Halfling) "I meant it more as an indication of character. But yeah that too."
(in Halfling) "So have you been convinced? I got the impression you weren't so enthusiastic."
[would love to know Matlock's reaction to the Halfling conversation going on around him]
(in Halfling) "Still not so enthusiastic. We can take on his quest and quit as desired, I suppose."
Roll Insight?
16+3=19
22:26
you roll, Mithical. My rolls are terrible tonight
mine seem to be too high
Matlock is watching you converse quietly in Halfling with a tiny smile. You get the feeling he understands every word you're saying.
(in Halfling, to Johnny) "That's true."
Do I need to roll for insight to get the same feeling?
(in Halfling, to Matlock) "I presume that's not a problem?"
22:28
Matlock smiles and replies in Halfling, "Shouldn't be a problem, no."
[:o]
(in Common) Okay, then. Tell us what you know about this thief, the owner, the egg... in short, everything you know that we need to.
(in Halfling) And how you know the language wouldn't go remiss either.
He nods. "Let's go somewhere a bit quieter, then. I don't feel comfortable discussing more when prying ears could be listening."
...after I finish this casserole, though.
(in Common) You done eating, Johnny?
22:32
has been eating; now eats the last bites of his food. It's terrible but, y'know, you've gotta eat
"Just about."
is finished eating
*stands up, scratches elbow, and nods at Matlock* "Alright, Matburn. Let's go."
(sheesh I can't type tonight)
He sighs and rises from his chair, folding his napkins nicely and stacking the silverware. "You can just call me Mat, if it's easier."
rises
*shrugs* "I suppose I could."
22:36
He leads you out as he speaks. "The red-haired halfling thief is Joan Quickfoot. She swiped the egg about a month ago and made a bit of a fuss, as you can imagine. But she didn't fully understand who she was stealing from. Greed can make you do ignorant things, I suppose."
"Quickfoot... Quickfoot... the name seems vaguely familiar, but I don't think I know any Joan."
"Who did she steal the egg from?"
"Good that you don't know her. She's a wily sort, but I didn't think she was the type to bring down the wrath of... well." Matlock sighs. "You're a clever bunch. I imagine you can piece it together."
"...a dragon?" *is totally lost*
"No, I obviously don't hang out in the criminal circles you do" looking askance "please be explicit..."
He gives Johnny a tired look. "Criminal circles?"
22:42
"I'll just say I never knowingly met a thief before today."
"And either I'm not clever or I'm ignorant, but I can't piece it together."
"I wasn't involved with the theft, I assure you. I just happened to get... tangled up." He looks away. "Calizzarria the Crimson, the Terror of the Mountain. That's the dragon in question, I'm afraid."
Can I roll persuasion to get the whole detailed story out of him?
Sure, what do you say to try and convince?
"I think any detail you can provide will help us help you."
[This time I'm using the rolladie.net die....]
19+2=21
@msh210 Ack, don't use that
22:49
@PrinceNorthLæraðr Oh? Why not? And then why is it pinned?
@msh210 It was problematic when I used it
For example
I got 1, 20, 1, 20, 1 back to back
Let me post a better site
It's fine, I don't mind - this one will count as a valid roll.
@PrinceNorthLæraðr no less likely than any other particular four rolls :-)
22:51
@Mithical only seems to have d6 and d2
I manually put in number between 1 and 20
@Sciborg Ah yeah. Not saying anything was bad with that roll, just saying it was a weird die when I used it
(sorry for interrupting)
(no worries <3)
Matlock blows out a slow breath. "All right," he says. "It's only fair to be honest. Joan was.... something of a pupil of mine. I did not know her plans. When she stole the egg, against my wishes and without my knowledge, it... quite obviously implicated me in the act. Cali's minions have been well informed of this, I'm sure, and they will be out for me as well. But I promise you, I did not wish to be involved, and my only wish is to return the egg safely to its mother and avert her wrath."
22:55
"Cali? So you're on familiar terms with the dragon? (Or at least were?)"
Matlock looks at you a bit warily. "I wasn't implying that, no."
rolling Insight
16+3=19
(good rolls mostly tonight for some reason)
"Since you know Joan, why do you think we'll be better able to get the egg from her than you will? Seems more likely that you would be able to convince or trick her."
He's lying, but more out of a desire to hide information that he doesn't want to share than to be actively malicious.
"The situation is too delicate for me to be involved personally. I was hoping for help so that I would not have to be directly associated."
"I'm not a big fan of delicate situations. How is it delicate, precisely, please?"
@Sciborg [Hiding info even after my 19+2? Does he get a defensive throw against that or something?]
22:59
"Sorry if it seems like we're grilling you. Just want to know what we're getting into." *raises eyebrow at Mat*
He winces again in discomfort. "It's... difficult to explain. But if I were to be actively involved in getting the egg back personally... it would be very bad."
"Yeah, exactly. I don't mean to be rude. Sorry if I'm coming across that way."
[^ that was before he spoke :-) ]
"I understand, of course. You have a right to question me. I am asking much of you."
"I am no friend of Cali. But having one's egg, one's own child and hatchling stolen... it is not right. No matter if we are enemies. So I must help her get it back, but I do not wish to be the one who helped. Does that explain?"
"Alright. Say we were to accept this quest. Where would one start searching for this Joan or the egg?"
[oh jinx, I was just typing: "If we're doing this, we'll need logistics info form you. Like, where would you expect Joan to be, how would we return the egg, etc."]
[DM, "enemies"? Is this something we're expected to know, or should I ask him about it? Are dragons enemies to all human-like creatures?]
23:03
You can roll Insight on that if you like.
or a spell, etc.
I don't think I have a spell... I'll roll insight.
or arcana, to know about dragons?
Either works here, sure.
insight is +4, I'll go with that :-)
ugh 1+4 (or I guess you count that as just 1, right?)
Thanks @PrinceNorthLæraðr :-P
You have no idea what he meant by that :P
Well, I can ask him....
"Enemies? Is Calizzarria a particularly unfriendly dragon?"
23:06
@msh210 (sorry.)
@PrinceNorthLæraðr :-)
He was about to answer Kith but pauses when you ask, and hesitates. "We... have history. I suppose. We are not friends. But her child was stolen, and I cannot stand by."
"Fair enough. Sorry, you were about to explain logistics to Kithri."
*mutters in Halfling* I see you rather enjoy being evasive.
('borg, we get to level up after this, right?)
23:09
He nods and takes out a map, offering it to Kith. "I know where Joan may have gone to hide, although she is a tricky sort and will be hard to track down. There is a place called Giant's Reach, to the north, where she will have gone. Go there and find her. And again, I beg you - please give no hint that I am involved, or that I am the one who set you to this task."
*takes map, puts it in pack* "Got it. The question now is whether or not I travel alone."
rolling investigation on the map to see if it seems to be anything in addition to a map
*turns to Johnny*
sorry, can I take that roll before you put it in your bag? :-)
yeah
23:12
18+0
The map seems to be just a map, with a place marked as Giant's Reach that is about a week's travel on foot to the north. However, you note faint magical runes inscribed along the edges.
Can I roll arcana also to try to understand the runes?
Go for it
2+0 :-)
You have absolutely no clue :P
23:14
(okay maybe this roller isn't all that much better)
[switching to Perl]
The seagull returns, flapping and squawking, and perches on top of Matlock's head. He grudgingly permits it.
"That gives me an idea..."
"Uh-oh."
"You seem to have a way with birds. Maybe if we bring the egg back here, you can convince a bird to carry it to the dragon, so we don't have to get in her way."
^ to Matlock
23:16
"Johnny, what kind of bird do you think can carry a dragon egg?"
"A strong one?"
He raises an amused eyebrow. "You will not need to worry. When you have the egg, I will have a way of getting it to her. And besides, I think you would need an African swallow."
"Oh, I was thinking a European one."
Matlock shakes his head. "No, no, where would he grip it?"
"African swallows are non-migratory, though."
23:18
"In a bag."
"And the weight ratios. Wouldn't work."
(this is the chaos we were looking for :PPP)
"Very well. If you have a way of returning the egg, we need merely get it here." wry smile
He shakes his head and sighs deeply. "I suppose you have all you need. Kindly don't get yourselves into trouble, and I will keep an eye on you along the way."
"Well, if you're keeping an eye on us anyway, then some help if and when we need it would be appreciated."
23:20
*wry smile* I'm not so good at staying out of trouble, but I usually manage to get out of it when I need to...
*reaches up to shake Mat's hand*
(side question: how exactly is a smile "wry"? what does that look like?)
Can I roll arcana again, to see if I can understand what he meant by keeping an eye on us en route?
"I should not interfere too much, as I said. But if you need help, I will give it." He shakes Kith's hand firmly. "Good doing business with you."
Sure, roll Arcana
9+0
You're not really sure what magic this person is capable of, but he does seem capable of some kind of magic.
23:23
@bobble [kinda pursed lips, sorta smiling but not really. basically the same as how I imagine a rueful smile]
@bobble [I meant "a smile, meant wryly". But usually it's a small smile.]
confused bobble noises
Facial expressions are hard
to Matlock "Donate for Pelor for us, will you? We can use all the help we can get."
"Tossing a coin down a well for the demons wouldn't go remiss either."
23:27
"Gladly." He gently shoos the seagull away. "Safe travels to you both."
@Mithical (*wouldn't? *wouldn't've?)
"...Demons?" He looks at Kith curiously. "So I did sense a bit of Abyssal about you. Interesting."
@bobble (you may be able to spot that it's late)
@Sciborg "Mhhm."
*scratches scar*
"I hope you find what you're looking for, whatever form that takes." He nods in farewell, and takes his leave.
"Well." *looks over at Johnny* Looks like we have at least a week's journey ahead of us... unless, of course, you know some spell of teleportation or something."
[Aaaand it is now 1:30AM, and we seem to have reached a natural pausing point.]
23:32
[What's Kith's speed?]
25feet
Yup, this is a good place to end :)
well. that was fun, and interesting
"I could cast a spell on you to allow to you to go 35 feet for an hour, but that'd wind me enough that I'd not be able to cast any more spells today. Not sure it's worthwhile at this point."
You have a Quest :D
23:34
That was fun and interesting. . . . And I still have the impression that Mithical and msh210 are not playing right, so to speak.
You guys are doing great, no worries
well the only way to play "wrong" is to make a situation where some or all of the group isn't having fun
two people who have never played before, bouncing off of each other
bound to get a bit weird
As long as you have fun, that's what matters :D
it has been fun just reading along!
23:36
I should've been doing econ homework >_>
@Sciborg Do we get to level up?
Please?
Yup, you may now all level up to Level 2 :)
ooh
Oooh I get new abilities
And spells!
23:37
tailSWISH!
this seems like something that will require some handbook checking... in the morning
@Sciborg I really admire your DMing style, I started feeling sorry for Matlock
> Starting at 2nd level, you can use your Channel Divinity to charm animals and plants.

As an action, you present your holy symbol and invoke the name of your deity. Each beast or plant creature that can see you within 30 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw. If the creature fails its saving throw, it is charmed by you for 1 minute or until it takes damage. While it is charmed by you, it is friendly to you and other creatures you designate.
@Dmihawk thanks :D
so all the lil' birdies like me!
23:38
Wait, so more health!
but... how can you charm a plant?
Some creatures may be plants :)
We're just taking the average health, right? No need for rolling?
@bobble Idk maybe you run into a living fungi
Yup, you can just take average hitpoint increase if you want :)
Hm, do I risk rolling?
23:39
Also I can censure undead
So vs plants OR zombies, I can do stuff!
The level 2 cleric powers are awesome
I get one more spell and one more level-1 spell slot. I also get "Jack of All Trades" ("you can add half your Proficiency Bonus, rounded down, to any ability check you make that doesn't already include your Proficiency Bonus") and "Song of Rest" ("you can use soothing music or oration to help Revitalize your wounded allies during a Short Rest. If you or any friendly creatures who can hear your Performance regain Hit Points by spending Hit Dice at the end of the Short Rest, each of those creatures regains an extra 1d6 Hit Points").
'borg if I roll a d10 and get lower than a 5, can I just take the average? :P
@PrinceNorthLæraðr that defeats the point of rolling :p
23:41
Risk and reward :p
Hmmm
Gonna risk it
"I'd like to buy a lottery ticket, but I want a refund if the ticket doesn't win" >_<
where does it say we get more health?
Each level you get a hitpoint increase, it's in your class page i believe
23:42
Boom
That is what we call
RNG
Welp :p
> Hit Points at Higher Levels: 1d8 (or 5) + your Constitution modifier per Cleric level after 1st
this thing?
Wait so taking the 5 vs rolling gets a higher number most of the time?
depends whether you round up or down
(kidding)
yes the 5 is usually higher than a d8
23:45
so um i'll take that then
You could potentially roll a 1, which is why i stopped rolling for hitpoints because i rolled 1-2-1 :p
@bobble Bard has the same.
hmmm... to pick a level-1 spell, or to go to sleep...
Decisions, decisions
Hm... I think I am meant to pick Eldritch Invocations >.>;
(I'm gonna assume we're back at full health borg?)
23:46
Yup, you get to pick Invocations :D
Nothing changes for me spell-wise, so that's good
So... beef up a spell I have never used... ;p
and i believe Timid Trio long rested, so at start of your next session, you'll be all healed up and spells restored.
@bobble Well you get more spell slots :P
and in-universe that's because we slept and took care of injuries
23:47
Bane looks like a good spell.
You technically get an additional spell, if you want bobble, since you leveled up
@bobble Yup
Oh, I also get an extra hit die. Cool
But I don't have to choose anything
Choices are hard
Very fair
I GET SPELLS NOW WHEEEEE
2
23:49
I will recopy Astrid with their new abilities later
Would Disguise Self let me look like an elf? ;p
sure? :P
technically that's allowed
Oh, cool, I can get spellcasting focus as ranger
Same as a druidic focus
Yup, now you get SPELLS :D
Hm
Probably want Hunter's Mark
But do I take Fog Cloud or Goodberry?
23:51
That one is super useful and i'm definitely not speaking as someone who abused it constantly in a previous campaign :p
Oh, wait -- we roll hit dice now, once, to determine our hit points until the next level-up? @Sciborg
@msh210 Yup, you can either roll or take the average number - your choice
I mean Devil's Sight is super ridiciulous, 'borg...
Ah, okay, I hadn't fully understood that. So I actually lose hit points, then?? Until now I had eight; now, if I take 5+constitution I get 7.
@Graylocke Devil's Sight is insane.
No, no, you don't lose hitpoints - you add to the ones you already have.
23:53
ah okay
would I add 5 or 5 + Con?
5 + Con mod.
wow, Command is a neat spell
and then 1 more because dwarf
ooh dwarf tankiness
21 HP!
that seems like a lot...
23:55
you are a beefy cleric
what did you start with again?
12
also, how does armor work?
So I would be insane not to take Devil's Sight and Agonising Blast :/
I don't think you would wear chain mail all the time
Okay, I must sleep. I'll pick a spell, make changes to my character sheet, etc. some other time. GameN, y'all.
I have 20 HP :P
23:56
It didn't come up for me in the combat because I wasn't hit
if you're ever not wearing the chain mail, your AC is just 11 i think, which is base with no armor
'night!
@msh210 good night! thanks for playing :D
I'm not sure if I want to go Blind Fighting or Dueling
23:57
Would you have said I was wearing chain mail during the combat?
I always assume you're wearing your armor unless you state otherwise
How do you have 11 AC without armor?
Because we had just got off shopping and eating, activities that a normal person does not wear chain mail to
@PrinceNorthLæraðr i could be wrong, would have to look up
And someone rushed us into combat
23:58
@Sciborg I'm just curious, that's all
Adventurers do tend to wear armour except when they are sleeping though :)
Or some other explicit event
It's usually just a thing i assume you are wearing
Okay, does anyone in this team have some sort of blind sense ability?
swimming, going to the duke's ball...
@PrinceNorthLæraðr what do you mean by that?
23:59
@PrinceNorthLæraðr No but I am seriously trying to work out why I wouldn't want "see 120' in any kind of darkness (including magical)
120 ft. darkvision is incredibly useful
